Chinese Protoss player (Wiki)Firefly, widely held to be a player with some promise and one of the strongest Chinese players in the Gold Series Team Championship, has been released from (Wiki)Dragon Phoenix Gaming (DPG) due to unprofessional behavior.

His contract was terminated early due to Firefly using an official team account on the SCBoy forum to promote a 4v4 competition he played for another team called Blade and in which his team mates have been found to cheat in. Firefly afterwards defended them from the allegations with some hot headed comments.

Translated statement from DPG's manager:

Recently DPG team member Xue Tao (ID: Firefly) released inappropriate remarks in the forum, and his remarks were bad in attitude and contrary to the spirit of e-sports. It caused a serious public opinion impact on dpg club. He also used the DPG club player's certified account to promote other teams' matches. This behavior has seriously violated his contract with the team, for the above behavior, the club adheres to the attitude of zero tolerance, with immediate effect, officially terminate the "DPG eSports Club Player Contract" with Xue Tao.

DPG eSports Club has always advocated fair play and believes that everyone should enjoy the possibility to engage in eSports without any form of discrimination and embody the spirit of mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair competition.

Translation was done via DeepL, please let me know if there's something wrong with it.

Did Firefly defend his 4v4 teammates after they have been found guilty of cheating or when they were accused of cheating?

The owners of Blade was actually the organizer and sponsor of that 4v4 competition. There were 9 teams participating and two of them (named msk and Shawk) were teams of those Blade owners.
One of the member (not Firefly) in Blade played for Shawk by smurfing on their account, he also observed the matches between those owners' teams and other participating teams and be accused of illegal communication (with rep posted in SCBoy forum as evidence of observing, but no one admit illegal communication).
After one of the participating team posted the accusing forum, Firefly firstly attacked them without admitting any cheating. Two days later, with more evidences came out, Firefly admitted smurfing but defended team Blade by blaming one of the owners' team and the only fault of Blade was "poor supervision".

So basically Firefly has done nothing wrong but defend team Blade? Still don't know why DPG fired him. Also can't believe the contract of DPG can be allowed to fire team members at its wishes anytime.

It's pretty obvious what Firefly did was:
* used his DPG status to promote other team's matches
* defended cheating (of his friends) while blaming organizers for not doing their job...?

It's pretty stupid.
DPG are right to cut ties.

IRL people are fired for less than what Firefly did there.
I'm just a cynical video game enjoyer who is probably unfazed by many business dealings many would find utterly distasteful, while not strictly illegal by the law as seen in a general sense in the world.

This 4v4 team matches is not an official tournament, but small one among sc2 fans in China. Very strange DPG won't even allow its member to promote this. Also defending his friends is just his opinion. He has freedom to express his personal opinion. It maybe wrong. But firing him is, i think, too much and inadequate for a team which has world top players like Dark, cure and zest.

With team GP also on the lookout for players, if he decides to join another team soon he won't lack of choices there

Well in the same forum Team Blade acknowledged that they did cheat. Firefly said he 'knew nothing about that', but it seemed that he was not believed.

In my opinion Firefly is accused cheating with Team Blade in the competition. Team Blade acknowledged that Dargon (Bohua Xu) was engaged. Firefly denfended he knew nothing, but DPG may not believe him.

You can pretty much get fired for anything at anytime if you do something that the management disagrees with, this is nothing new in any industry.

Add on top of that what he did could amount as burglarizing his office (if it happened IRL) by using DPG official accounts instead of his own, and he already fights from a weak position if he tries to argue this is unfair.

Replying to that :

What the size of the tournament is doesn't matter. DPG is a premier team, why should they care about smaller ones. Defending his friends is one thing, speaking in bad faith (given the Blade team confirmed the accusations on a sufficient level, at least at first glance) is another. A video game team is a business, not a charity organization.

If anything in other countries, he could be taken into court, depends of how it works in China. If he gets away with only getting fired from DPG, he already dodges a big bullet.

My understanding of the issue is, Firefly was fired for not practising as hard as he's expected to. Management at DPG felt disheartened after giving him tons of support and resources (they had Dark, Cure and Parting taking turn coaching him). I guess all the drama just sped up that decision.

Don't promote one organization's events with the official account of another organization, especially without making sure it's ok first. I think this is pretty abundantly obvious with anyone with brains. If I had access to social media of Amazon and used it to promote events sponsored by Ebay, you'd quickly understand why I would be without a job.

The other strike is to defend cheaters. No, you don't have "freedom to express personal opinions" when working under contract with someone. This is a myth that needs to be trampled immediately. Again, if you work for Amazon, and go around shouting loudly that Ebay is much better, you will get fired for it. It doesn't matter that it's your "personal opinion". You represent a company, and you don't get to express opinions that go against that company's own.

Here's some update from one of the two sponsors of DPG, Jiu Cai. He claimed 3 major reasons for ending the contract with Firefly.
Here's my short translation:
1. Firefly said "My boss is asking me to hold an amateur event." Obviously "My boss" is neither of the sponsors of DPG.
2. Firefly's attitude to the cheating in the amateur event is quite unprofessional.
3. Firefly continued to organize the same event after all these things happen.

Following are details, I tried my best to make every sentence as close as the original Chinese. Sentences in the bracket is my supplment. I'm trying to make it easier to understand:

1. Both DPG sponsors don't really care about Firefly promoting other events with Firefly's certified account or helping others organize an event. The real thing is that Firefly told Jiucai that "My boss is asking me to hold an amateur event." Obviously "My boss" is neither of the sponsors of DPG.

2. When some evidence was posted showing there's smurfing in that amateur event, Firefly stood with the sponsor of the amateur event without taking any further investigation. Both sponsors were quite disappointed about Firefly's statements and they don't want DPG to be blamed because of this. (The actual Chinese words are much more offensive, they are quite unhappy and they are quite reluctant on dealing with this thing because everyone is celebrating Lunar New Year, a festival having a similar status to Christmas in the western countries. It should be a period when everyone gets relaxed and happy. People will also worship their ancestors. Actually, Jiu Cai knew what happened right after he finished worshipping his grandfather)

(I believe Firefly does not know one of his teammates was doing smurfing and he didn't do anything against e-sports spirit but replays were provided and it's quite easy for Firefly to directly ask that teammate about it. Plus, what Firefly said was not simply "I believe my teammate. I think the game is fair." The main idea of his response is that "You loser. Don't try to find any excuse for losing the game. I hope you can be the champion next time. Fighting" This statement has already made most people in that forum quite disappointed.)

(After Firefly found that his teammate was smurfing. He claimed that the team which got benefit from the smurfing does not need to be punished since that team didn't win any award.)

3. After all of these things above happened, Firefly is still helping to organize the same event with his certified account. It also looks that the only response of Firefly to Jiu Cai is "I'm sorry I did the whole thing wrong, boss."

(Some screenshots also show that Firefly is continuing practicing 4vs4 with the sponsor of Blade and he is still active in the group chat of that amateur game. What's more, his identity in that group chat is "organizer of the event". It looks that he does not really care about any influence of the previous event.)

There is quite a lot of discussion about this thing on the Chinese forum scboy.com. Not only Firefly and DPG sponsors but also other participants of that amateur, Xiaose, F91, and the sponsor of the amateur event provided more detail about what happened in the event and behind the scene.

I'm not good at English and I don't have time to translate everything. If you are interested, you may try google translation. It may not work at all since there's a lot of slang.

This is where everything starts:
https://www.scboy.com/?thread-209496-5.htm
Here's Jiu Cai's response about why he fired Firefly:

a DPG manager talked about it further in this post. When Firefly explained the situation to the other DPG manager, he lay that 'our boss told me to hold this competition'. Then two DPG managers confirmed with each other that they never told Firefly to do so, and they had no idea who the so called 'boss' is.

So, maybe I'm deviating to much of the subject, but reading this, I'm starting to get interested in knowing just how "big" is the chinese small tournament/amateur scene, that something like this Firefly mess happens. Do they have other small teams around organizing stuff and having players that we don't know about?

Are small tournaments like this one a reocurring thing?

Is that other team really that much of a team that Firefly even risks calling the guy "boss" even if jokingly?

If someone could provide some information on this I would appreciate it!

Here's Jiu Cai's response about why he fired Firefly:

Thank you for the in depth insight, it realy cleares up a lot

So, maybe I'm deviating to much of the subject, but reading this, I'm starting to get interested in knowing just how "big" is the chinese small tournament/amateur scene, that something like this Firefly mess happens. Do they have other small teams around organizing stuff and having players that we don't know about?

Are small tournaments like this one a reocurring thing?

Is that other team really that much of a team that Firefly even risks calling the guy "boss" even if jokingly?

If someone could provide some information on this I would appreciate it!

That amateur tournament was really small, with $150 prize for champion. Most players in that are amateur (some pro-gamer like Firefly may join). Team Blade is also an amateur team with actually no formal organization. The owner of Team Blade also sponsors some other amateur teams.
