TY announced on his stream that he is set to begin his mandatory military service this year. While TY was unsure about the exact start date, he said it would be sometime in June or July. He stated it was likely that he'd be able to compete in GSL Code S Season 1 as well as IEM Katowice, though he was unsure about Code S Season 2.
TY will fulfill his military service as part of the auxiliary police force, an alternative to active military service.
Will be quite sad to see tournaments without TY. ): I guess it's also worth noting that herO/Gumiho are coming back around that time just so it doesn't seem all bad.
Was bound to happen sooner or later. Here's to hoping he comes back to the scene once it's over...if it's still here. Form is temporary, class is forever.
There's really no right time for doing it... You either make the most of your early pro-gamer career but come out of the military in your 30s with no broader skillset, or you do it young and give up some of the only time to do what you want.
Oof, this one hurts. He's definitely one of the most consequential people in the scene and arguably the best of the legendary Korean Terrans currently. Hard to spin this one in a positive light

the fourth mech hokage will be gone for 2 years but we have the third mech hokage gumiho back :[
This is big, time really does fly. We're truly in an era where we're finally losing all the big names to the military, hoping meanwhile for the ones already in to return once they're finished. Good luck TY, make use of the big brain of yours in the army as well
Shocking and very sad since he could probably have postponed it until 2022.
I can understand why he would jump at the chance to go to aux. police instead of the military before that option is removed, but as a progamer it makes little sense imo. When he's done it will be just in time to not qualify for Katowice 2023. That is also the time when Blizzard's contract with ESL expires. One has to be a pretty big optimist to imagine the EPT and GSL being played beyond that date in something resembling the current setup. I don't really know what it is TY expects to be able to return to.

Pretty much this. Was hoping he'd delay as much as possible.
I guess there will still be SC2 when he comes back, questions is if it's enough to be a fulltime SC2 pro

I love how everyone expects him to return to the SC 2

ByuL and Leenock will end their service around then as well, though ionno if any of them intend to play SC2 again
It sounded like Gumiho and Classic might be interested in coming back? I hope so much that Leenock makes a comeback, always been a fan of him. Byul was cool too. It seems so difficult to come back and make it to the top though.

I doubt there will be any SC2 worth returning to by then. But if there was, I am quite sure he would try to return? He is one of the best after all even though he has side gigs like the casting and broodwar.

The Blizz deal should be ending by then, so there will be SC2 pro scene. How long it lasts is a different question. And I honestly believe there can be one, just smaller. And probably funded from China(unless they run out of love for the game(they're so rich I doubt they run out of money))

Maybe he’s accomplished his main goals and finding that motivation is getting harder? You have to be really dedicated to a singular thing for years and years to play at this level, I don’t think it’s that surprising his casting gig brought with it a boost in results.
All speculation without TY speaking about it I suppose.
The scene really desperately needs at least some of the next batch of military returnees to get back to the game and really in shape, departures from the Korean scene are really starting to bite.

True, and what other RTS games are worth playing right now?

Brood War, at least if you’re TY anyway.
Again I’m unsure what he thinks about the whole scenario himself. Returning from service to get back to the top of the mountain is no cakewalk, would be cool to see him try.
On the other hand he could probably pull in decent money streaming and playing semi-competitively on Afreeca, cast SC2 on the side and probably build an easier transition to a non-eSports life if that would be something he would want to do.
If TY had not had the great success he’s had in GSL in recent times I’d think he’d be way more likely to come back than given what he’s accomplished. I mean what real unfinished business does he have?
Ah shit, hope he doesn't end up like other progamers that went to auxiliary police.
For those who are unaware, there is this unfortunate coincidence where Calm and Effort, some of the top Zergs (right below JD) in Broodwar era, went to the auxiliary police and their skills dropped HARD. Calm now rarely plays Broodwar and has turned into a LoL streamer, while Effort has gone from Flash-killing monster to a tier 2 zerg.
