(Wiki)Netease Esports X Tournament 2020 Winter

(Wiki)Trap was finally able to end his run of second place finishes in major competitions, defeating (Wiki)Dark 3-2 in the grand finals of Netease Esports X Tournaments (NeXT) Winter. The former Jin Air player turned free agent defeated Bunny and INnoVation in the group stages, and proceeded to run through Stats, TIME, and Dark in the playoffs. Trap won ¥50,000 yuan (~$7,655 USD) in prize money for his first place finish.

Going by prize pool, it's very close given that all of Taeja's 10k wins are considered to be premiers

1st place prize for this is more than TLS and ASUG ROG. This is a nice win by Protoss. Protoss has always been able to win as this tournament shows. And Protoss has made the finals of many, many, tournaments over the last 3 years.

I want to point out the difference between this and premier tournaments - this finals was a Bo5, not a Bo7

Zest won WardiTV's in June this year whereas Trap, effectively, won his last tournament five years ago(Kung Fu Cup Season 1).
Glad to see him win although he deserves something bigger!

The 1st place prize for Netease was more than other premier tournaments. Almost all of the best Koreans participated in this tournament. Best of 5 for the finals is irrelevant, that's just the tournament format.

A Protoss won a tournament with a higher 1st place prize that is higher than many of the other tournaments now, with most of the best Koreans participating in it, trying to win that 1st place as well.

some of Taeja's victories had also a bo5 finals.
But I think we shouldn't pay too much attention to what Liquipedia considers "premier" anyway as it's a kinda meaningless term - this tournament was easily on the level of some tournaments which are considered "premier".

People is reluctant to give this tournament the credit it deserves because it was not marketed and produced for a western audience. That' it.

So to put this in perspective, first place for Netease was $7,655. First place for TSL 6 and ASUS ROG is $6000. So Netease paid out more for first place than either TSL 6, or ASUS ROG, and a Protoss won Netease..

Netease paid less out overall than tsl6 tho (15k vs 30k) but about the same as ASUS, but the perceived prestige was lower (probably also because pretty much kr/cn only event).

Of course tournament format and having bo3 playoffs and a bo5 finals is relevant, why would it not be? You'll get more upsets with a format like this.

I do think the event was pretty good/prestigious, but the format does take a bit away from it.

Using this to argue that 'Protoss has always been able to win' is still really dumb though. Sure they can win, but not very often--and that's after Protoss has gotten a bunch of buffs and zerg nerfs. If anything this underscores how utterly screwed Protoss was a year ago.

Also we know trap can beat the very best zergs in bo5, he has shown it this year already, the problem came when he faced mlutiple zergs or it was a bo7, and while he had some nice victories here his run was essentially 2:1 Stats and 3:2 Dark the other matches he was favored anyways i think, so a decent run but not something i'd put on a pedestal. Anyways it's nice that trap (and protoss) won something, doesn't happen too much at bigger events.

Whether some of you agree or does not agree this tournament should be premium, I believe the organizer should apply for EPT points at least.

The tournament wouldn't be eligible without significant changes--they'd have to do invites according to ESL rules, qualifiers on multiple servers and so on. It doesn't make sense for them to do so. Not everything needs to be part of EPT.

Exactly. Trap made more money that if he had won 1st place in TSL or ASUS ROG.

Nobody isn't giving it credit. It's obviously a nice tournament to win from a professional player standpoint and even a fan standpoint.

What people in this topic are saying is that using this tournament as evidence that "Protoss had it in them to win a championship the entire time" is flawed. This was a Bo5 finals of a smaller online tournament, among other things.
