ESL and DreamHack have announced the penultimate tournament of the 2020-2021 ESL Pro Tour: DreamHack Masters: Last Chance. Held during January 12-17, the tournament will be players' last chance to earn EPT points and qualify for the Masters Championship at IEM Katowice 2021.
Official site & info:
We are almost done with our main portion of 2020 for the ESL Pro Tour, but there are points yet to be decided for our EPT Championship: IEM Katowice event. It’s been a long year full of highs and lows for our competitors and there’s only two months left before we lock in all points earned and begin preparing to crown a champion for the 2020-21 season.
Taking place January 12-17, we will have 16 players compete for $57,000 and their final ESL Pro Tour points of the season, which will set the 36 players who will be joining us in Katowice in February. Currently Reynor leads the charts with 2372 points but it’s not fully settled yet - Serral is still on his tail and there’s still events held and points to be earned between now and mid January when we lock them in.
It’s time for DreamHack SC2 Masters: Last Chance 2021.

So, uhhh, what happens to the 36th IEM Katowice spot that was originally planned to be awarded through this tournament
|
|
So there are going to be as many spots for EU as for the Season finals, there is one extra spot for NA + Latam and almost double the spots for KR + CH + TW + OCE ?? E.: nevermind, I m dumb. It s just one spot from Asia shifted to NA. Also I just double checked, these are Server Qualifiers, without region lock, so doesn t realy matter anyways, nice.
Still, having to play two full qualifiers and still get 0$, if you lose the qualifing match seems quite off. Giving at least some money to Place 17 - 32 would be nice.

What, was this tournament intended? Did not thought another one would occure before Katowice! Thats great news! Really excited!

Yah, some kind of major event before IEM was announced from the start (personally I presumed it was going to be at IEM Beijing originally), but due to the pandemic it seems like it's taking place in the form of another Season Finals-like touranment.

This should have been region based or something. Feels kinda uninteresting for the overall ‘race to katowice’. Would be surprised if it changed anything, just feels like an extra season finals. Not against it, just feel like it could have been more interesting / something different

As the points from different regions are not realy compareable. Those players would as of now be: Dark (KR Rank 11): 1115 pts Scarlett (NA Rank 3): 730pts Nice (TW Rank 1): 702 pts uThermal (EU Rank 6): 657 pts Kelazhur (LA Rank 2): 423 pts Probe (Oce Rank 1): 355 pts Cyan (Ch Rank 2): 160 pts

Yah, it's 99.9999% Korea getting another spot unless someone from another region goes on an INSANE run at Last Chance, TSL6, and ASUS ROG online.

No chance for Kelazhur, Probe or Cyan though

I agree, the format of the tournament doesn't seem the right one considering it has to be a Last Chance qualifier.

Hm, guess this is a compromise with Covid sticking around as long as it has.
Always good to have more SC2 action, although it doesn’t really feel the ‘last chance’ part will be given a huge amount of space to thrive.
A winner takes all tourney featuring only those not already qualified for that direct spot would be of a lower quality in games sure, but I think would have a lot more hype.

When I heard the title (Last Chance), i assumed it was gonna be this, and that would've been awesome.

Yeah seems like this isn't going to be so much of a last chance to make Katowice as a "one more chance for the people already qualified for Katowice to get more money"

Well the Fall-Winter Starcraft schedule is packed for once. The event's format does seem rather uninspired though and doesn't really make for much of a "last chance".

Yeah, this is the great thing about ending the SC2 year in March. And it makes a lot of sense to broadcast tournaments in the cold winter months when people are indoors anyway.
