2020 GSL Code S Season 3 - Semifinals Preview

by Wax

More info: GSL Code S Season 3 on Liquipedia

Semifinal #2: Armani vs Maru

Start time: Saturday, Oct 24 4:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)

Well, this is awkward. Every preview involving Armani this season has basically been an obituary, where I pay him some token compliments (he's a solid macro player who plays the late game particularly well), re-tell my favorite quaint anecdote about him (he was on the verge of retiring before this season, but somehow broke through the group stages for the first time ever after learning how to relax), and then solemnly wish him peace and happiness in the GSL afterlife.

Only, Armani isn't dead.

Last week was supposed to be the nail in the coffin for Armani, when he went up against an established star player in Zest. It didn't matter that Zest's 2020 PvZ stats were down in the gutter, or that his form was about as consistent as a Dragoon's pathing—a two time Code S champion was obviously going to beat a player who had never made it out of the first round until this season.

Instead, a trainwreck of a series ensued. When the smoke cleared, we saw Armani limp out of the wreckage, with broken bones and a brake spring sticking out of his side. It wasn't pretty, but he had survived to fight another day.

Sure, there are some things you could nitpick about Armani's run. For one, he qualified for the RO16 as the second place player in Group A, the designated 'charity' playoff spot. And while Armani played pretty well against Zest, you could also say that Zest choked pretty hard. But that's not Armani's fault—TY was the one who made the decision to draft Armani to Group A, and Zest has no one to blame but himself for the fatal mistakes he made in a big match (forgetting Storm while going for a Storm-timing?). The only thing Armani could control was whether or not he beat the opponent GSL put in front of him, at which he's been successful for three rounds so far.

All that said, it's time to get awkward again. I'm getting the shovel back out of the shed—there ain't no way Armani is surviving an encounter with his next opponent.

I mean, when Maru is on a roll, who CAN you pick to win against him? With Maru coming off a championship run in King of Battles, and having dominated Trap 3-1 in the quarterfinals, the his hype-train has recovered from a creaky, shaky summer and is roaring ahead at full speed.

Now, I was going to make the point that all of Maru's 'quality' wins in this short, autumn run have come in TvT and TvP. In fact, he actually lost 1-2 to Serral in the King of Battles group stage, and his last win against a 'top-tier' Zerg was against Dark in June's DreamHack Summer Korean play-in match. I was also going to make the point that Armani is part of the Cure TvZ riddle: Cure got absolutely shellacked by Armani and DongRaeGu in GSL Code S, but then went on to eliminate Reynor and Serral from King of Battles. While [Armani > Cure > Serral > Maru] is terribly faulty logic, my point was that it's at least worth thinking about.

But who's got time for that s*** when Maru's winning? I've thrown my dumb TvZ points underneath the wheels of the hype-train and watched them get pulverized into powder. It's time to bring out the G5L trophy, baby!

Not surprisingly, the TL.net community sees this as one of the most one-sided semifinal matches in Code S history, if not THE most one-sided ever. At the time of writing, the Liquibet on the match favoring Maru by about 390 to 20. I went back and checked on some of the more lopsided semifinal series of LotV for comparison—sOs vs MyungSiK (2016), Cure vs TY (2016), Zest vs Dear (2016), Stats vs Ryung (2017)—and none of them even come close to that ratio. The nearest comparison was Hurricane vs Dark from Code S Season 3, which capped out at 387 picks for Dark, and 61 for Hurricane.

Of course, the venerable TL.net users are frequently wrong—I, a TL.net user, incorrectly predicted the last three Code S matches. But this one? C'mon. Even AfreecaTV went for the dramatic framing in their promo image (the one in the banner). This prediction has to be a gimme... right?

Prediction: Maru 4 - 0 Armani

Yeah, EZ finals for Maru. This season feels very underwhelming TBH. Lots of the old guards are just not really themselves. Zest feels washed, and stats got completely wrecked.

And so Armani begins his decade-long reign, sweeping every premier tournament along the way and turning Frost Giant's RTS into a one-man show

what RTS? Seriously, the hype is nice, but they haven't shown anything yet, be careful

Anyway, let's see how Armani can prepare for a BO7

Yeah, 4-2, if it goes 3-3 I will get very worried.
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

does anyone remember the last time Afreeca acknowledged the mismatch and did a similar banner to this? I feel like it happened a couple times before... maybe it was during the Maru 4x run.

It's like GSL tradition that in order to have a good finals we have to sacrifice the Ro4 and possibly the Ro8.

It's also tradition that if the Ro8 and Ro4 are good, the finals will suffer, see last season as a perfect example.

This tournament has been awesome up the Ro8. Ro16 Groups C and D were absolutely INCREDIBLE and Group B was really good too.

What I'm getting at is that as things look now barring some extreme upset we're going to have a Maru/TY final and the last time these two met it was one for the ages only the TvT meta is a lot more fun now than it was then. We won't have mass Raven late games like we did before, although we will definitely see Ravens still.

Maru vs TY is as even a match as you can get in the pro scene. Their winrates against each other in premier matches is an even 50%, but Maru DID win the GSL title the one time they competed for it.

I'm really looking forward to that, and I'm obviously cheering for that coveted G5L trophy. Maru just has play solid and not do the kinds of stupid stuff that Zest did and he should crush Armani. Hopefully Zest getting bopped should wake him up and make him go into that match ready to kill a nerd.

Armani is basically the closest thing to a royal roader you can get these days, I wish him the best of luck. He's going to need it.

Also Wax.
Cure TvZ riddle: Cure got absolutely shellacked by Armani and DongRaeGu in GSL Code S, but then went on to eliminate Reynor and Serral from King of Battles.

The answer to this is obvious. Cure played against Reynor and Serral online, and Armani and DRG offline. Cure's powers cannot be fully awakened offline. He's made some progress this year, but he's still not there yet.

For whatever reason he's just that much stronger of a player online. Hell he even made his TvT match with Maru competitive AND he knocked out TY in TvT.

If Cure can somehow learn to channel his online power into the GSL he'd legitimately be fighting for that top Terran in the world title.

I can see Armani upsetting Maru in a 2-1 fashion in a group stage or in a online tournament.....
but in a BO7?
in a GSL semifinal???
No way right?
Like.... the only option for Armani is if Maru's shoulders is so swollen that he is force to play with the nipple red mouse of the keyboard.

OTOH Maru just does not lose Korean tournament finals. He either wins them or loses in semis.

I want to watch Maru splat Armani's bugs.

I think Armani is a RO16 player who made it through to the round of 8 and played against a terrible Zest. I wouldn't be surprised if Zest didn't practice at all for their match.

If Maru goes anything worse than 4-1 I'd be impressed.

Rooting for Armani. Always great to see someone new reaching the semifinals in tournaments.
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

Maru made it look easy in the last game. His CC first really caught Armani off.
