The founder of PSISTORM Gaming has announced that GuMiho will start his military service this December.
GuMiho is a former GSL Code S champion and took second place at the GSL Super Tournament 1 this year. Starting in 2010 on team For Our Utopia, he is one of the few players still remaining, who participated in the original GSL Open Seasons. He later represented CJ Entus and MVP in Proleague.
The announcement also states that TRUE will likely join the military after the first season of GSL Code S in 2020.

GumiGod is really underrated and deserves to be easily top 5 terrans of LotV, he was consistent and showed decent results. Thanks for all interesting games.

Literally one of my fav players to watch - and this is definitely one of the best clips lmao - pretty sure he still won the game too?

This was GuMiho vs peak Zest. This game was one of very few losses for Zest, at the time. GuMiho was such an underdog. This was a ro32 player vs the best in the world.
This may cause PsiStorm quit CTC,I think? More KR pros will join the military. That's bad.Though they may return after mililtary service,it's hard to recover.
The Towell Terran, The mech master, the literal GumiGOD, you will be missed. My favorite terran to ever win a GSL. Thank you for everything, good luck in the military, and you will have many loyal fans still waiting for you when you come back <3
GumiGOD doesn't need to serve the army. Army should serve his needs. With his unorthodox strats and builds he can beat anything which threatens the human race
"What a GREAT set of play from him today! Last week, the week before, this guy is on fire right now. He is contending, he is defeating champions. (...) GuMiho is just on another level right now. (...) He belongs on a pedestal tonight. What a great player!"
Gumiho is one of the greats. Just loved this dude. He's already overcome bigger adversity than a 2 year hiatus. Let's give him at least a tiny chance that he'll come back one day.

I understand the impulse behind this kind of comment, and frankly it's hard not to be sad and disappointed given the direction that things are headed in, but I see this as even more reason to watch, and to play! I've only been watching SC2 for about a year. Took an interest pretty randomly because I used to play BW in college (and the C&C games in high school). I can't tell you how much enjoyment I've gotten from watching the top tier tourneys and even older VODs from ProLeague, etc. I told myself I was done playing video games, but after hearing Nathanias on the Pylon Show or somewhere talk about the importance of growing the player base for the future of the game, I even DL'ed the damn game and started playing (quite terribly, haha).
This last year has been a weird time for someone to become a SC2 fan/viewer. The doom and gloom attitude among a significant % of the players, viewers, and casters has been palpable, and growing. Certainly there are good reasons for this, but I also feel this is counterproductive and could help create a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. For new fans and players, hearing the constant negativity is frankly a bit off-putting. No one wants to invest their time, energy, and money into a dying game when there are so many other dope games out there to watch and play.
But the thing is, SC2 is incredible. It is the best RTS game by far, and RTS as a genre in my view is destined to make a comeback. The approach to gameplay blends such a unique, fun, and interesting combination of strategic thinking, multitasking, and mechanical skill that there will always be a big enough potential player base to make the genre financially viable. I say "potential" player base because I do feel that despite being an incredible game, SC2 has some weaknesses that have been exposed as the MOBA, Battle Royale, and FPS genres have taken off as e-sports. Let's face it, the first 2ish mins of every non-cheesy game is relatively boring in the context of a closed universe of potential openings, and late game strategies in a lot of the metas have felt unnecessarily limited and predictable compared to what could be possible with other types of map elements and units. There's a lot that could be done to address this, but I digress....
Somehow this became a rant of sorts, but I meant it to be a call to action! I love this game and am so happy that I stumbled upon this community of weirdo gamers, fans, and casters. This is really the only game I've played in like 15 years. I regularly check this forum, watch the Pylon show, support on Twitch when I can, etc. with the hope that if enough of us fans participate, we will see Blizzard continue to invest in SC2 and maybe even develop a SC3!
All of which is to say, it's okay to be sad about losing Gumiho. He is one of my favorites as well. But let's take this as an opportunity to celebrate him and thank him for showing such amazing games (anyone got any particularly great Gumi Vods they wanna share?). And do what we can to grow the SC2 community so that the game is alive and well when he comes back from the military with some ridiculous new mech builds
As predicted, slowly all the stalwarts of the GSL leave, with no one to replace. Its been fun gumigod! congrats on your gsl championship, sucks you had to crush soo to get it though!

I am on the complete opposite side.
I want this game to die ASAP, so we can all take a break of RTS. Then, in a couple of years, when we will all be missing a good RTS to watch (and when blizzard will hire competent balance team members (they should take a look at RIOT)), we can have a fresh, SC3 game that will have a lot of hype. Every time someone who is not a fan of sc2 hears the name of the game, they just think "hahaha sc2 ded game lol". If we let this game die for good, we can reset and restart to have a chance at becoming great again.

Kim Jong-Un isn't making Koreans not play SC2.
Kim Jong family doesn't prevent young koreans from playing Sc2, but it is making sure older progamer get recruited.

He can t unretire as long as he s still serving, as Koreans are legally forbidden to earn money, while they are still serving.
So earliest he comes back is once, his service is done. If you now want to point out, that Byun played GSL qualifiers a few days before his service ended, he didn t earn money in the qualifier, so that appearently was ok..
Still hoping for Gumiho (and also hero and Classic) to come back this year.

Makes a whole load of sense for Gumiho especially who was never a high level BW player. Not sure about herO tbh and I think Classic was a rather decent player in BW, so there’s more of a choice there.
Where are all these big money BW tournaments and injections of money into BW e-sports ecosystem that makes it bigger than SC2? I assume they are as hidden as the big money AoE 2 tournaments that are luring away SC2 players.
to be fair, Maru has some a recent proclivity for at least a bit of mech. Perhaps he is scarred from the GSL Code S loss. But he went pretty heavy mech in WTL and qualifiers if I recall.
