it's not about wether Smix is wrong or right, but still, this is not an official announcement (it very well can be a casual good bye, like >> see you [next year] <<). i'm quite sure there will be wcs 2020, and i'm curious what Maynard meant when he said it will be different this time.
hoping for the entire finals to be held in Korea (not just ro16) or something like that.

If there is a big change coming, why not more regions? Americas, Europe+Africa, China, South Korea, Oceania and rest of Asia. Maybe regional qualifiers for global tournaments. There might be a league system on the way, like a lot of sports have e.g. football (both soccer and American), basketball, ice hockey etc. The region lock could be abolished, allowing the travelling elite to rake in money again. Maybe the Blizzard grip will lessen and more organisers are coming, like the return of ROG SC2.

We are not 100% sure that Smix is wrong. We also are not 100% sure Smix is right. And that is the point here.
We want to have a 100% confirmation and until that point we assume the worst (aka "the HGC scenario")

I think we'll see a continued small incremental decline in support for the GSL and WCS. We've watched these small declines occur for several years. I don't see Blizzard or ATVI dropping SC2 esports the way they dropped Heroes of the Storm eSports due to this following slide shown at today's ATVI investor relations Q&A.

Put in 1984 terms ... Heroes of the Storm is an unperson.

There is Spyro as well, didn't know Activision-Blizzard had its rights.

If I'm not mistaken, the dragon character Spyro is part of the Skylanders franchise which is a long-standing Blizzard property. I wonder if a further sequel is under consideration for development. That was a big cash cow for them back in the day.

StarCraft next to Candy Crush 4Head

Nice bump :p
Do we know more about WC2020 now?

Well Katowice Qualifiers are starting today (or tomorrow morning) depending on where you live. So we hopefully get some informations there. But I have no doubt whatsoever, that there is going to be some kind of WCS, based on all the money CTC is pumping in the system. They wouldn t do that, if they wouldn t belive in some long term stabillity of the scene

I guess it's another January without GSL.
|
It's kinda crazy that we all thought the announcement was ridiculously late last year, and now it's even later.
Last year they announced WCS Winter just before Christmas and confirmed that there really would be another WCS. GSL season 1 announcement came in early January and then the full announcements came late January/early February.
Perhaps it is that they feel they already announced that WCS will return with Smix's closing statement at Blizzcon, so now they're not saying anything until they can confirm the whole plan. Also, if they're downsizing there may be plenty of time left to get through the whole schedule even if they begin late.
