GSL vs. The World 2018

GSL vs. The World kicked off from Seoul's FreecUP studio with its first set of round-of-sixteen matches, which saw Koreans and foreigners split their head-to-head matches 1 to 1. Germany's (Wiki)ShoWTimE toppled Korea's (Wiki)Zest in a bout between Protoss vs Protoss masters, while (Wiki)Stats made short work of China's (Wiki)Cyan.

In inter-Korean action, reigning GSL champion (Wiki)Maru faced tough resistance from (Wiki)soO, narrowly winning by a 3-2 scoreline. Though Maru lived up to his reputation as a late-game powerhouse, soO was able to take two maps off of strong early and mid-game play. Ultimately, Maru was able to close out the series in a hectic game five with a bunker-rush-turned-base-trade.

(Wiki)SpeCial avenged his WCS Valencia loss against (Wiki)Has in a foreigner vs foreigner match, with the Mexican Terran able to survive a barrage of cheeses to win 3-0.

GSL vs. The World continues on Friday, Aug 03 6:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) with the remaining RO16 matches.

wow i'm 3 maps off from prediction, had special 3-1 and maru 3-0

Also, i hope this ends the korean super bias "GSL > everything". Turns out WCS is acutally rather competetive and winning it almost flawlessly 3 times in a row means something.

Ehm, one series, with Zest, the biggest slumper in human history, of all people, proves something? Let's wait for the rest of the tournament to make any conculsions ...

It's a fair and rational point that we should wait for the rest of the tournament to make conclusions.
However, Zest being a "slumper" is very subjective and bordeline utter BS imho.

The probable truth is that WCS is nowadays more competitive because foreign players have more incentive (mainly financial) to compete hard between themselves which leads to a more competitive foreign scene.

Thanks for the write-up, that makes me want to watch the Maru vs soO series even tho I already know the outcome, which is very rare

Whoever voted for Has instead of Mana. You messed up. Mana beat Special not so long ago. You got excited cause of some cheese and voted a weaker player in. Good job

While I don't think that it's insignificant that Zest loss, as most people were still predicting a Zest win, of all the Koreans, Zest loses a number of times against foreigners. He's also one of the weaker Koreans in terms of recent dominance. Sure, you can never really count him out of a match, but he feels less intimidating than other Koreans. If any other foreigners can take matches, then it might be something, but we'll have to wait and see.

WCS is more competitive now, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take showtime vs. zest with a grain of salt. Zest isn't in a "slump" exactly anymore since he did make gsl finals, but he still looks shakey more often than not even in his wins. I'd still hold off judgment about WCS circuit compared to GSL until at least ro8 is finished.

Zest looked less than amazing at Homestory Cup, so this result isn't too surprising. His series against Showtime was probably the biggest chance for a Korean to lose to a non-Korean in the tournament.

I think its wrong to say that Zest is in a slump and so on. He advanced in his GSL group and was in the finals last season.. I think his problem was, that he underestimated Showtime a lot. You heard it in his interview and the aspect Rotti mentioned, that cheesing on that map is nonsense if Zest would have watched some matches of him. I think not to watch games of your opponent is a strategical mistake, plus his underestimation and Showtime being a good player... he deserved the win and now saying that he won just because of a bad shape of Zest is bs

OR showtime is just really good he also beat stats recently.
it seems everyone is just making excuses for the koreans if they lose.
kinda odd and boring.

i think the casting/analysis in the broadcast were pretty accurate. it looks like Zest wasnt prepared at all for showtime. against a player with strength in defense, you dont win if you wanna go with your head through "the wall". take advantage that he is sometimes a little to save, outmarcro him or gaining here and there little advantages and work out your win. The fact that Zest didnt get a single upgrade in the whole series (correct?), says everything...

still, showtime is to me one of the most underrated players. would have loved to saw a finals against serral in valencia. Maybe Maru did a better preperation, considering he picked him first!?

Oh Has, why do you break my heart so .

Hoping Maru takes the win. Impressed with soO taking Maru to five maps though.

The bracket makes me really sad when i look at it, beating Maru at the moment seems nearly impossible, while i think ShoWTimE would have had a chance against most other Koreans (except Rogue, I think). Same with Serral, going up against Rogue/Innovation (I´m not expecting him to lose against Kelazhur) in the Ro8 will be really hard. Of course i don´t want to count them out already, but still, i have the feeling both of them could have had a deep run if they would not run into the best players of the world in Ro8 already..
Aside from that I would like to know what HeRoMaRinE thinks, maybe he is quite happy now that the Brazilians voted so much for their boy Kelazhur, flying to Korea just to play against Serral again might not have been a pleasure for him

Showtime played great and Zest has had terrible PvP since the shield battery era. I can't wait to see Showtime take on Maru. I am also happy Special can represent his new sponsors by advancing. His match versus State will be great.

Think of it as a foreigner right of passage. Stephano did not ascend to foreigner bonjwadom by winning IPL against Lucky. He did it by going through top Koreans over and over again. If Serral is heading in that direction, then this is a necessary step \o/.

Whether he's in a slump is debatable.

What isn't debatable is the fact he played like complete shit. Probably his worst performance in a tournament all year
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

Zest's PvP since the shield battery era has been really good? If anything, it improved, cos Zest was seriously slumping for like an entire year before 4.0. I think most people consider Zest's PvP currently one of the best in the world.

Personally for me, I think Zest's style is really clowny and he's super stubborn with it. He loves to get these weird early game edges which basically didn't pay off in any of these games. Every single game was reasonably competitive, which is frustrating cos he's clearly very good but found himself so far behind that it didn't really matter. He definitely has probably the 2nd most dangerous PvP in Korea outside of sOs, but the weaknesses of his play were really shown here.

I'm no Zest hater but boy does he often look so silly sometimes, in all matchups.

It would just be nice if that necessary step was in the Ro4 or finals, but yah, you are right of course, if you want to be the best then you have to beat any opponent, no matter what round it is. So i just wait and see, and hope for some awesome games (and it´s not like i dont feel any sympathy for the koreans, too)

This tournament is already living up to the Hype, the first two opening games were fantastic. The second two matches were less exciting but I feel cyan and Has are the weakest players here so hopefully the next round is even better!

Also the Maru vs Serral pick has awesome!
