I kinda expected to see Stephano on that list, since he has been streaming so much with the donation goal supposedly covering the travel expenses for DH Austin :/.
He is in such a good form too.
Well top 8 should basically be the EU challenger winners plus Neeb and some BTTV house members I guess .
Although seeing uThermal bounce back would also be cool!

Happy to see TIME again, it's always fun to watch the Chinese players

Full player list? What about the players yet to qualify from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan?

I'm interested to see how well NonY does and if his Blizzcon passion is still alive. Will be cheering for him!

Dude I signed up for this tournament in the open bracket where is my name??? I already emailed esport@dreamhack.com about this. Is there anybody else that I need to get in touch with?

I guess most of the spots are reserved for known players and pros, while the others went to people who signed up before you.

That's bullshit. The entire premise of tournaments at dreamhack is that they're an open bracket that anyone is allowed to play in. The sign-up page of their website is STILL open right now. Don't I at least have the opportunity to fight for a spot online then? There's no mention on their site of it being first come first serve.
I've been looking forward to this since DH Austin was even announced.

Avilo going? I don't think so honestly, his dreamhack donation requirement hasn't reached its goal so far.

Hopefully Heyoka can clear things up. But the number of spots was always limited to 64 and they have to choose somehow.
|
If they have to choose somehow then they need to be transparent about how they're going to do that. I could have signed up sooner but when I attended dreamhack last year there were a ton of open slots so I didn't think it would be an issue this time around. They also never sent me any sort of email even after I signed up. Really bad planning on their part I have to say.

Ok, I heard from someone on twitter that I'm on a wait list. I wish you guys would have sent an email so I didn't have to find out they way I did because I was really mad when the player list came out and I had not heard anything at all.

It means Snute, Nerchio, Serral, Showtime will be split up in different groups.
It would be really unlucky if they got two more out of Neeb, Scarlett, Major, Drogo and uThermal into their group.

Very solid list of Europeans going I have to say, that is awesome!
Still, it hurts that we are close to May when this tourney will kick off and this is the first WCS of the year. We should have had 2 different champions already in the non-Korean circuit, with lots of hypes and whatnot. But yeah, when 60% of the circuit was unceremoniously cut from one year to another, one will have to get used to loooong periods of little to no high-level action...
|
Glad to see NonY competing at Austin. He was unfortunate missing out the NA Challenger due to some timing. He has a good chance at open bracket!

I do think that is the case for the open bracket people, but for Probe and Iaguz they didn't sign up, they won the qualifiers and were written down manually.

It's safe to assume that pros had priority and were seeded by WCS points, but after that it's not clear.

Anyone know the procedure for getting in early on Friday to warm up? We're instructed to use a visitor pass and last year that didn't get me in early. From what I understand it's the same pass used for people who just want to watch the event but obviously a player has to get in early. Finally I insisted on getting in early, explaining I was playing in the tournament, only to find that dozens of players were already there and warming up.
So two questions: what is the earliest time we can come to warm up and how do we get into the venue at that time?

Yes apparently it is (I've gotten email confirmation since then). I had to harass people for an explanation as to why I wasn't on the player list that got publicly announced because I wasn't given any information after registering for the tournament. Another nice thing is that you don't actually need a dreamhack ticket to sign up for the tournament, so it's impossible to guess how many no-shows there will actually be.
Basically the people who are accepted into the open bracket get a computer that they get to use for almost the entirety of dreamhack which means you can just hang out and play SC2 in a special area that spectators aren't allowed in. It's really boring otherwise.

Open brackets have 2 group stages. That is a lot of matches to play. Players just want to play and move along so they can be done. Then, get some rest, practice and have some fun. If Avilo is gonna throw tantrums and stuff causing delays, it is gonna impact other players in his group. No one wants that.

Last year this was a bit goofy because the venue opened really late on Friday, this year the general admission opens at 10am and the ro80 will start at 1pm so there should be good time to get settled and warm up. Can just walk in with your general access badge since the venue will be open.

It's a sad day in Starcraft 2 when TRUE is not recognized as a "real Korean pro," although he has admittedly fallen off from his JAG days. Besides, now that there's foreigners in Code S, can we really say that the top foreigners aren't "real Korean pro" level?
Also, as a side note, Major beat Hurricane, who has gone on to two impressive online victories.

I am not on a team so i personally would have to cover all the costs of travel, hotel, etc. I always have a stream goal of like 100$ per day normally because why not i'm one of the top SC2 streamers xD.
So i set an even higher goal for this event hoping to essentially crowdfund the cost of travel, hotel, lost stream time, etc.
Unfortunately haven't met the goal, i basically just made what i would have streaming normally over the last 30 or so days. The mega high donation goal was to hopefully spur people on to get me to the event.
Do people really think paying to go to events is mega cheap? Hotels can cost couple hundred over the course of a few nights (variable), and plane tickets are also hundreds of dollars.
The time lost streaming aka working is also a lot of income gone for going to these events. So yeh.
I was very transparent about the goal i set from the very beginning of when i set it about 30 days ago. I was also transparent to everyone that watches me that i honestly think going to events is not worth the monetary investment unless you're already on a team that covers all the costs, but i would go if i met the lofty goal i had set.

Why would i be afraid to go to a LAN i probably have more LAN experience than a lot of the newer SC2 players lol. I somehow seem to play pretty good at LANs probably because of adrenaline and such and getting pumped.
But again, to be 100% honest unless you're currently sponsored or on a team it is 100% not worth it to travel to events if it is coming out of your own pocket for a game like SC2. The return on investment is likely to be very little to nothing, especially if it's not guaranteed your matches in the open bracket will even be covered on stream.
If this were 2011 and the game is at it's highest point, and there are events galore, etc. it'd be another story. But it's just a huge risk unless you know you're 100000x better than everyone at the event and can survive 99 cheeses in the open bracket.
I'm not saying i wouldn't want to go to this DH or any upcoming events, but unless i get sponsored or on a team it's pretty expensive to get to these events, money-wise and time-wise, so i do not understand why there's people in this thread acting as if everyone has stacks of cash laying around in their house to freely travel across the world everywhere.

Fun fact: TIME just got his visa, the embassy staff that interviewed his visa request is a avid Starcraft player and knows him lol.

Obviously not. The risk of losing a few hundred bucks is outweighing all the potential short term gain so much that in fact, it is a wonder why anyone would go there at all. lmao, that was so lame.

I'm not sure that's entirely fair. If you're not sponsored, then you have to pay for flights + hotels, and because avilo rightfully isn't certain that he can make through to the paying stages, at which point he would really only be breaking even, then you have to weigh that versus keeping that money and potentially streaming for those days.
I'm not a fan of avilo by any means, but for lower-level GM players who aren't on teams, it is a decent investment to go to a tournament where you might get knocked in the first round, and you have weigh whether it's worth it.

Yeah, a number of people will go to a tournament and not make a monetary profit from it, if you sum it up over the few days the event lasts. However, there are other gains to be had when going to a bigger event, such as for example the marketing aspect. There is the possibility of promoting yourself to a much larger group of starcraft fans, potential sponsors etc that you'd normally wouldn't be able to reach that easily. On top of that, this is one of the top 4 tournaments for foreigners this year. This is where you have to be if you want to be someone in SC2 in 2017, especially if you are living on the same continent. (Just don't fly United ffs!!!) At least that is what I think and hence I thought the excuses for not going were lame.
But yeah, if Avilo prefers to stay at home and do his ordinary streaming, then I don't have a problem with that per se. It proves that you can be below the top, not even bother to try to get a placement in a competitive event, and still make a living out of starcraft. And that is pretty nice.
Anyway gl hf either way.

The real reason is he can't blame people at LAN for maphacking and stream sniping. :D
On a serious note, finances makes sense, but I'm sure it's also ego and what I said above. Was avilo ever part of a pro team?

Updated the OP here so it's current, avilo, Scarlett, and JimRising dropped out and we added Toodming and Livibee. In general the news on wcs.dreamhack.com will have this stuff updated more quickly if you need a current list for some reason.
Schedule coming at the end of this week and groups next week!

Well, they did reform the system by basically cutting 60% of the WCS action, while Korea has practically had non-stop top-level price pool action since the beginning of the year... yeah, I'm salty
