WCS Bracket Drawn; Neeblet in, Nerchio out

WCS Global Finals Quartfinal Bracket Finalised
Elazer steps out of Nerchio's shadow while Neeblet bounces back in convincing fashion

The final day of the WCS Global Finals group stage had a number of questions to be answered. Would (P)Neeblet bounce back after his loss to (P)Zest on Day 3? Would heavy favorite (Z)Nerchio survive a ZvZ against compatriot (Z)Elazer? Could (P)PtitDrogo do the unthinkable and upset Proleague legend (P)Stats? Did (P)Dear learn anything from (P)ShoWTimE in time to upset (T)ByuN?

The day opened with Stats handily defeating PtitDrogo. Stats proved his class as he never looked in danger throughout the series and easily booked his place in the quarterfinals. PtitDrogo remained in good spirits after the match, and departs the tournament having left his mark and - if nothing else- will be remembered for his beret and moustache (perhaps next year he needs some baguette)!

Neeblet struck the first blow in his series against (P)Patience with dominant play. However Patience hit back in game 2 after Neeblet made a number of uncharacteristic control mistakes. Foreign fans might have been concerned going into game 3, but Neeblet's Oracle-Stalker timing attack quickly put to rest any doubt about him advancing. Patience struggled to respond to multi-pronged pressure and bowed out confirming the second foreigner in the quarterfinals.

Byun looked to be back to his old form as he dismantled Dear in two games to confirm his place in the quarterfinals. In the first game Byun exploited Dear's greed with his trademark incredible Marine control off the back of a timing attack. While in the second game Dear was never able to respond to Byun's potent Cyclone build. In the post game interview Byun credited Showtime for giving him lots of practice to prepare him for Dear.

In the final game of the day Elazer was the heavy underdog with a career match winrate against Nerchio sitting at a mere 13.64%. Despite Elazer suffering set backs early in game 1 due to excellent speedling control from Nerchio, a clever Mutalisk switch gave him a fight chance. Nerchio was unable to get the required fungals to win the game back and was forced to concede. The second game was eerily similar, Nerchio once again made a strong start but Elazer won crucial fights with both players near maxed armies thanks to incredible Roach flanks. The 2-0 win secures Elazer his biggest payday of his career so far.

WCS Global Finals Bracket

The bracket was drawn so that two players from the same group could not meet until the finals. This meant that when Showtime and (Z)Dark were drawn into the same side of the bracket there was a 66.6% chance that Showtime would be drawn a non-Korean opponent. After Dark drew Neeblet as his quarterfinals opponent, there was a 50% chance that (T)TY would draw Byun.

The big winner in this drawing looks to be Dark who, if he is able to make the finals, will avoid his Korean compatriots. Neeblet proclaimed confidence against Dark in his post-game interview and would probably be happy with his bracket. Byun and TY are the obvious losers from this bracket drawing, both were pegged as heavy favorites coming into the tournament but Showtime's upset win over Byun on day 3 has lead to them being drawn together. The upside for the fans is that the much anticipated Byun-TY series will be played out, so that should be a treat on the first day of Blizzcon.

This approach for predicting matches hasn't worked that well lately, but I'll stick with it a bit more:

Dark got this. Silly foreigners can't stop a Korean!

The only way for KT to end. With more teamkills.

Ever since KeSPA Cup I was 100% convinced TY vs ByuN would happen in the Ro8, so I can't say I'm shocked. But the bracket still sucks.

I have no idea how the barcket is drawn. Is it a simple "any 1st" vs "any 2nd"? Why not add the restriction of mixed MU for the Ro8. Would have worked perfectly.
I personally don't dislike a mirror here and there, but like this, there is the possibility of having 4 mirrors right at the start. Anyone else having the same thoughts?

All first places got drawn into a spot in the bracket, then the 2nd places got drawn to make the matches. The only restriction they applied was that two players who were in the same Ro16 group can't meet again until the finals.

4/2/2 ratio isn't too bad. I've had to watch most of this tournament in VOD format so I feel like I've missed the "storyline" aspect so far, and thus don't really care who wins.

Yeah considering we started with 7/2/7, 4/2/2 is pretty good.

I think the brackets are more than fine, it's very likely we will get a 2/1/1 (2p 1t 1z) distribution in the semifinals, which is very nice. Plus, we are guaranteed a foreigner in the semis, also nice.

Personally I wouldn't mind having

Showtime vs Dark
Byun/TY vs Zest

->

Showtime/Dark vs Byun/TY

It would be an amazing final in any way: the best T vs either the best Z or the foreign hope (I am not experienced enough to claim they are all really the best of their respective races, especially Showtime, but for sure they are all in the top3)

I won't be able to watch live, but I can't wait to watch the matches

Such a anti hype bracket T__T

Foreigners all on 1 side and the 2 only terrans on 1 side.

Still, lots of games to look forward to!

Do you realize how arbitrary and unfair this would be?

Drawing were fine, and the fact we have 2 mirrors from a 4/2/2 race repartition is not shocking.

It was drawn by the players themselves. Only rule was that they don't meet anyone from their groupstage until finals.

1st faces 2nd of different group, can't hit other player from his group until grandfinals... That's a pretty standard way to determine a bracket and it works that way in almost all tournaments. It worked this way in GSL as well for example. Guess you never had it explained to you in such detail before.

Right, exactly. I was a little worried it would be super lopsided against T but thankfully we got 2 pretty high quality ones

No, i don't see why this would be arbitrary and unfair, sry. At least try to make clear what u are talking about.
Maybe a player base of 8 or less is not suitable for this kinda drawing system, cuz there would be no variance left in the worst case (here could have worked), but applying it on a wider player count.. why not?

Any other format would mean Showtime has play vs Elazer or Neeb or Stats. I really feel Showtime messed up for you so badly.

It was "randomly" drawn. It could have been A1 vs D2 in theory. The only condition was that players from the same group have to be in different halves of the bracket.

Depends on who you ask! But foreigners are the most competitive they've ever been against Korea including Neeblet winning a tournament on Korean soil (the first time a non-Korean has done this since Grrr 16 years ago)

If ByuN (current GSL champion) counts as a reliable source, ShoWTimE is actually that good.

ShoWTimE helped ByuN practice vs Dear, so they played a lot.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Bracket seems awful. Every single KT player is on one side of the bracket? Both Terran players play each other in the Ro8. Would have loved to see Neeb play against a korean terran but I guess that can only happen in the finals.

Also holy how much easier is the top bracket. Blizz colluding with foreigners =b?

People think Dark vs TY will be equal final, but I don't think ByuN or TY can beat Dark especially in bo7 in the final. It can be one-sided for Dark i personally think. And his ZvT is almost unbeatable for terrans especially when it comes to bo5 or 7. I never saw Dark lose in bo5 or 7 by any terrans. ByuN just made surprise to take 2 games from Dark in crossfinal bo5 in season2. I think even Neeb and ShoWTimE have better chance to beat Dark in bo5 or 7 than ByuN and TY. I am pretty sure any protoss opponent will be harder for Dark in this bracket, and probably if Elazer beats ShoWTimE, he can make another huge upset through ZvZ.

That showtime upset of Byun really fucked this bracket up for the Terrans. If Byun had won that match like he was supposed to it'd be Elazer vs Byun and TY vs Showtime on opposite sides of the brackets. Instead we get this.

Whoever wins between Dark and Neeb are going to the finals for sure. as for the other side of the bracket, flip a couple of coins, it could go for any of them.

Honestly i think Stats has the best chance against Dark. If he makes it through Zest and TY/Byun first is another story.

After ByuN practiced with Showtime, it just comes out to show how effective pre workout prep is before annihilating the iron...

ByuN and Ryung going for insane practice now on TY builds... Neeblet's got an Elazer on Dark VODs (although I'm sure a pretty pissed off Nerchio'll rather practice with Showtime to kill Elazer after what he did to him)... Showtime's got Nerchio in that case and perhaps Elazer (he seems like a nice chap)...

What about the KT boys out there by themselves? TYs got Jjakji?, Stats and Zest practicing is only a mind game for what they'll show later... I hope the other Koreans out there are willing to provide some help...

These next couple of days for prep is making me laugh harder and yearn more for that Byun Global Finals Championship....

As much as maybe this bracket is not 100% ideal for the best possible games/storyline it is still 100% fair, as Blizzard there is really no other fair way to do the bracket, it would be completely messed up to give certain players advantages over others just so we don't have KT team kill or even foreigners on each side of the bracket. The Drawing was random based on who advanced first/second and this is the result, fair is fair.

Now, just looking at this the crazy thing is I think Elazer actually has a decent shot at the finals, he may be an underdog against showtime but its not that hard to imagine he takes it and if Dark beats Neeb than I think Elazer actually has a great shot at taking down Dark in ZvZ. Just crunching the numbers Solar > Dark, Nerchio >Solar, Elazer > Solar and Nerchio = Elazer > Dark?!

FTFY. Dark probably has the most momentum of all the Koreans coming into Blizzcon. But Neeb is also by FAR the most hyped foreigner, definitely wouldn't write him off.

I honestly think Neeb matches up reasonably well against Dark. If he shies away from his early pressure builds (which won't do anything to Dark who always opens aggressively too), I don't think Dark will be able to do too much damage, and the main late game we've seen from Dark in ZvP is ling bling into hive tech, which isn't that good against Neeb's "survive until mass tempests"

Curious to see what Dark's solution will be, don't think we've seen much hydra viper for him. As a die-hard Dark fan, I'm super nervous, butthole is very clenched...

haven't followed SC2 lately, is Showtime actually good or are there balance issues / Korean scene no longer as good?

He was really well prepared for ByuN. I think this was the main issue there. I felt like Showtime knew pretty much everything about ByuN, while ByuN was just playing his standard play without too much specific preparation for this one opponent. And I guess that backfired quite a bit for ByuN in this matchup.

Not taking anything away from Showtime! He did really well and preparation has always been part of the game. However, if they meet again in the finals (which i doubt, ofc), I would not be surprised ByuN beat him.

This. Showtime has stated himself in the post-game interview that he was well prepared for ByuN and that ByuN played EXACTLY like he anticipated. At that point, Showtime had a strong advantage over his opponent and he played the best he could leading to his victory.

Neeb(let)'s biggest weakness is wierd early pressure builds. I give Neeb the best chance if he can avoid dying in the early game, then he can macro with the best.

I'm a pretty hard core Neeb fan, and I don't think you have as much to worry about as I. Dark is definitely the favourite here.

Showtime so dominant wow ... but as Nathanias said on stream if showtime faces byun in finals chances byun gets fooled twice, and especially in a Bo7, are extremely small. He should adapt and come out on top, right?

So much hype. Wow.
