I've watched proleague religiously since it was broadcast on spotv. It was great watching SPL at 9/10pm and falling off to sleep at some stage during the broadcast. The times lined up perfectly with NZ. The great thing about the spotv broadcast was that they had the esports.tv youtube channel and that gave me some idea of the Korean viewership. Sadly, those numbers have decreased and decreased over the last 2 years. The writing has been on the wall for sometime. SC2 has had next to no new Talent for the last 2 years. It's been the same veterans of the scene doing well over and over again. With the advent and popularity of the MOBAs like LoL, Dota2 and Overwatch - RTS is a dying genre. Given that the talent for pro-gaming stems from an early age (think kids in their Teenage years), I think you'd be hard pressed to find kids playing any RTS game now when they can play 5v5 with their mates in League Dota or Overwatch. I actually find myself playing Dota2 and Guildwars 2 significantly more than starcraft and have been for a while now purely because of the social experience where I can play with multiple friends. Naturally I watch Dota2 and some GW2 proleague now too as I play both those games. I'd be inclined to think that other players of Dota2, League and Overwatch would do likewise - and as such their audiences are likely to be growing. From a Financial point of view - all 5 sponsor companies - SKT, KT, CJ, Samsung and Chickenmaru + Hot6 (MVP) would find that their investments will see a larger return if they invest in League or Overwatch (iirc - Dota2 in Korea isn't that large...yet? Maybe we'll see some pro-dota teams and the resumption of KDL?). In anycase, Starcraft II will always have a special place in my heart. I almost very nearly did a dissertation on the game and its role popularising the global esports scene...ended up having to do something more "Practical" (damn you supervisors at my university!) As for the SC2 fans keeping the game alive - unfortunately, SC2 will never have the same nostalgia factor as BW and this may very well be the end in Korea at least. I can only hope some of the individual competition remains next year, else SC2 will be very very sad. | ||

I quit playing Blizzard games since WoL and probably won't be going back, ever. I still watched PL every week though. Was entertaining to watch and I wanted to lend my support regardless of how I personally felt about the games. I'm personally very frightened for CJ in this case. I don't want them to pull all their support from eSports, but their LoL team just dropped out of LCK and now their SC2 team is nonexistent. We need some good eSports news coming out of Korea soon. | ||
