Today was the turn of the StarLeague qualifiers and just like yesterday's GSL qualifiers there were ups and downs and the odd foreigner trying out too! First off let's go through the noteable changes to StarLeague, this qualifier was to determine the 24 players heading into the "StarLeague Season 2 Challenge League" which is 4 groups of 6, in a best of two format. However this format is pretty interesting, as the two maps are determined by the players preferences, this map selected by the player is called "home" match and the opponent's preference is the away match. Rankings in the group are determined by results first then as a tiebreaker those with more away map wins will triumph over those with fewer. Sound familiar football fans?
NoRegreT was first up in the morning session, he managed to get to the final but lost to Trap and Hush respectively. Scarlett also was in action again but she got unstuck by running into herO before managing to get to the loser final before meeting a familiar foe in Bomber for a place in StarLeague, unfortunately after a good start she fell 2-1 to the Bronzed Bomber and thus bombed out at the last hurdle. They were not the only noticeable players to drop out though, with the likes of INnoVation , Dream and ByuL all failing to qualify for this season StarLeague. Also there would be no repeat of our protoss president MC as he also failed to qualify with losses to BrAvO and Trust.

next week we have 3 days of proleague and cross finals. If they rush everything Korean SC2 stops mid july.
Interesting format and not totally retarded like the initial season 1 format, nice to see new stuff.

Stops mid july if they rush it? Weds Friday for GSL they have 24 bo5 Code A games to start with at 4 a day that is a month's worth then you have ro32 groups which again is another month of 2 groups a week and we are in August before we in knock out stage. Thursday we get once a week s2sl. They have challenger groups into round of 16 which is going to be another 6 weeks from then on. September is most likely we will be without sc2 in Korea now xd
so if we include the preseeded players (top 4 from last season), we have 6 KT players 5 JA players 5 Afreeca Freecs players 4 SSG players 4 SKT players
Innovation and Dark taking each other out as well is a good thing.
I'm just afraid of Zest, but hopefully someone takes him out before Zest meets Maru. Zest is pretty much the only guy I'm afraid of at this point, maybe Dark as well but yeah well Dark might get innovated.
No Parting either, so that's a good thing. All these big names which used to be trouble for Maru are out of the picture atm, just because Maru is so consistent.

I think that mostly comes down to brackets. Also some players seem like they had a worse day today than yesterday. HyuN qualified for Code A yesterday, then lost to some rookie today.

Try being a Brood War fan. Afreeca said they wouldn't run the next SC1 Starleague until the lastest GSL had finished.
Great to see so many JAGW players! Especially Maru :3 and $o$ :3 and Rogue :3 omg, they all great)
I'm wondering how they are going to play and stream 15 BO2(omg) matches in one day... Challenge Stage: 6 players in one group, Round Robin, BO2
Also happy 1 post-day to me!) I have been reading TL since like 2012, but only now registered. Cause, you know, English is not my native language. So, bear with me guys)
Also when you compare the list of people who don't make it into gsl and the list of people who don't make it into ssl, the disparity is pretty big... The scene clearly fits better into the gsl format than it does in the ssl format, I'm not sure which format is better because of that (competitiveness vs inclusivity)

Man back in the bw days the qualifers were a tournament themselves. Now you just have to win 2 bo3s to qualify. Of course in bw the player pool was huge
Wow that scarlett bracket! That would have been so awesome to watch a cast of. Really impressive she is actually in great form though. Barely didn't make it and took out some Kespa players along the way. Some groups I think she would have made it out. And facing bomber to get out of the group! So much nostalgia!
Also parting lost to seed in that group? So sad to see this drop in skill from one of the best personalities in Korean Starcraft. I miss skt parting.

80% of the time I look, bw has twice as many viewer as SC2... And I don't think I've seen a SC2 stream with over 6000 viewers in years...

Exaggeration but yeah, bw generally has more. Though in saying that SC2 has more as I type this.
But it's silly to compare anyway, that's the best of the best BW players streaming there compared to a sc2 caster and some low tier pros.

Your remarks are just flat-out silly.
"Brood war is a dead game",
You get shown some strong BW viewership numbers.
"SC2 is also a dead game",
Wow!
Just keep those silly remarks to yourself. Neither games are dead, both are fine and kicking. If you need high viewership in order to compensate for your insecurities about the "health" of the game, then go watch LoL. Personally I enjoy Starcraft without burdening myself about viewer numbers.

No big name is streaming for SC2 anyway even in "prime time". Where BW has Bisu or Flash who do we have? Which SC2 player is that big? Mvp? Oh... Life? Oh^2...
The closest active player is Parting who's invisible this year. From former active players who still stream it's MC. Probably Polt and Bomber too.
From the currently active and godlike players - Zest, Maru? Have they ever streamed?
Top SC2 Pros don't stream :'( Oh god, I wish Maru or Zest would stream.
Whenever Flash streamed SC2 people were crazy and numbers were insanely high for a "dead game"
Edit>God damn it, now when I reread it again - I do not mean that Bomber and Polt are former active players >< But that they are the closest we have in the way of foreigners knowing them and following them, jeez, what a start to this day

The comparison is meaningless because it is really apples to oranges. SC2 has an insane amount of tournaments and these draw the viewers, the time when people cared about personal streams are long gone. BW to my understanding, while having reasonably big tournaments now and there is much more stream-centered. So comparing stream numbers is just plain stupid.

well I mean i agree with you. But you also have to consider that sc2 is the more up-to-date game, with a larger global viewer base vs BW, since bw is mainly played in South korea. A lot of Starcraft pros won't stream cuz of proleague (THEIR TEAM MANAGERS WON'T LET THEM STREAM).
also, like sure fking flash has 6000 viewers, but if flash played sc2 streams, he may well have over 2000-3000 viewers, and that's only on twitch, i can confidently say that over 3000 people would watch flash in the chinese viewerside, they just would watch it from a different platform.
So don't me this bullshit about bw being more popular than sc2. Their not comparable, bw is the old game, sc2 is the new one. that's that, they are both NOT POPULAR compared to games like LOL, Dota 2 etc

I guess with Proleague being on Mon/Tue/Sat for round 3 they couldn't really get 2 days per Challenge group?

I don't think it's as pronounced as you think; GSL has Code A as well.
120 guaranteed games in Ro.24 + bracket ro.16 in SSL vs 24 Bo5s in Code A (72-96 games) 8 groups in Ro.32 (80-120 games) ro.16 group stage playoffs
So just a bit more than 1/2 the games up to the playoff stages probably. Also, the current schedule has the season ending in mid-September; surely you can push that back a bit, or use Proleague broadcasting days once SPL is over?
It's especially weird given that I think SPOTV is broadcasting LCK Bo3s at 12pm on Thursdays (I think?).
All in all, I don't understand anything about this. Seems like it's shafting the Korean crowd who go to the games every evening.

Yeah, I don't know, I was just looking for a convenient excuse, and not enough broadcast time per week was the best I came up with. I doubt they'll get much of a crowd at 1 pm on a work day. I mean I don't think the SPOTV higher-ups are too hot on SSL, but surely they could have thought of something better for the Korean audience.

Looks like league has kicked SSL out of the evening time slot; unless I'm wrong, Proleague could follow...
Well GTR already tweeted that (because SPOTV got LCK broadcasting rights) PL will be on Monday, Tuesday (1 match each, 5pm KST) and Saturday (2 matches, 6pm KST). It's not quite as drastic for PL, but not great either.
SPOTV pls
If there's any justice in the world, Reality vs Soulkey v2 please
So either we need a ZvZ that goes into a 1-hour late game lurker/BL stalemate, a super late game TvP that somehow ends up in a draw after a turret snipes the last interceptor on the last carrier, or a late game ZvT where the Zerg refuses to commit into liberators and the Terran refuses to move out.
