Interesting how it's mostly only the Koreans that would probably be at those weekend tournaments that are retiring...I'm sure the rumors of WCS have nothing to do with this whatsoever.

I will miss you MMA. GLHF

Doesn't anybody else find it strangely coincidental that a lot of Korean progamers are "retiring" due to this reason or something along those lines?

I can't be the only one who senses war or something else being foreshadowed

I am incredible sad about this, but not surprised in the least bit. MMA is a legend and I hope in some way he can stay in touch with the scene. Au revoir, sir, and GGs.
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

Damn you military service. All the best MMA, I hope he wins HSC. No better event to go out with than this though I guess. He can meet all his teammates again and visit the team house one more time. He loves Germany .

well, lotv is a good point to retire though. new game, you would have to repractice a lot etc.#

really sad about the news, MMA was one of the biggest names in sc2 he will be missed, good luck on his future endeavours!

Blizzard made the money and has no reason to keep SC II alive on their own.

But seriously, MMA is one of the oldest progamers in the scene. I am happy that he can celebrate at HSC with his foreign fans and foreign friends a last time and then start the next episdoe of his life.

Expected this due to his age and how many times he has already said he will retire soonish. Still sad of course but now is probably the best time to do it instead of starting to practice a whole new game.

I wish him the best in everything else he does in his life, he was and will remain as probably my favorite player ever <3

Honestly, I thought it was way worse several years back. This has been a relative small amount of off season retirements, but really big names because of MMA and Flash.

OT: MMA was one of my favorite Terrans and he will truly be missed. MMA vs DRG forever!!!

Inorite? There can be many reasons for players to retire that are irrelevant to the game or scene itself. It's so silly for some people to associate retirements with whatever they're currently feeling passhun about.

I know MMA wanted to reach higher before retiring, but he really has accomplished a great deal and I'm sure he can walk away satisfied. GL to your future endeavors, MMA. <3

Dude what has his retirement to do with the balace? Almost everyone knew he will retire this year. Even Olimoley said it on the stream 3 weeks ago. Dont know why almost everyone here is saying, his retirement has to do with the transition from Hots to Lotv.
Well because of his win vs Mvp in GSL final in Blizzcon 2011, I started to watch e-sports. Since then he was my favourite player. Well sad that he wont play for another year. But at least we can watch him in HSC.

Now this is a player I care about! MMA is a fucking legend. The crowd shouting "MMA MMA" on an MLG was one of first foreign tournaments I ever watched. How he played back then can be now viewed as pretty standard, but in his time, it was a revolution, the determination to out-zerg the zerg by being everywhere at once.

Oh for fucks sake. Retirements happen every end of the season. This particular retirement also isn't unexpected. MMA practically announced it a year ago. He has had a long career and his military service is coming up.

And what dark future of WCS? Everyone who actually knows something seems to consider it a positive. How about we wait till we also actually know something? All the rest is idiocy and bleating of the sheep.

Wait... since when is Terran the currently super underpowered race did I miss something?

And very sad to see MMA go, I really loved when he got back into ro4 GSL after going back to Korea, showing that he still had it in him!

Can't say I'm surprised. He mentioned retiring even when he was the runner up at Blizzcon. Taeja, MVP, MMA, Bomber, and ForGG to a lesser extent. My poor terran heart. At least we still have Polt from the great WOL terrans. For now...

MMA vs Mvp in the GSTL March finals
MMA vs DRG in the GSTL May finals
MMA vs Losira at MLG Columbus finals
MMA vs Mvp in GSL October finals
MMA vs DRG in Blizzard Cup finals

WCS EU championships in 2013 and 2014

IEM Kiev, DH Moscow, Iron Squid 1.

Blizzcon finals 2014. Off the top of my head, these are some of my best memories as a fan of MMA. And of course IdrA gg-ing to MMA had me laughing for a week.

Some more notorious moments would be losing to Goody, to Polt in the Super Tournament, losing to Protoss, the SlayerS drama, the slump.

Farewell MMA, I'll miss you a lot. He's one of the few reasons I got into esport, watching MLG, GSL, Iron Squid, WCS, Blizzcon always was a pleasure to watch when he was playing.

I really hope he's going to do well in military service and during his "normal" life. Take care of yourself.

He was my favorite player and I was really when slayers team disbans and what happened to him after that.
He succeeded a beautiful comeback and I am sad for him not to have won the last Blizzcon against a very good Life, it was his last dream and would have liked for him to finish his carrier on that

Why isn't coming war the first thing that comes to mind when you guys see all these koreans "retiring" for military conscription? Is nobody getting that sense from all these "retirements"?

So unfortunate. MMA is one of the Terran legends but he was getting on in age. At least he doesn't have the burden of military service anymore so I hope he finds a good path in the future.

I might be wrong on the military service. Last I recall he was doing it but he suffered a knee injury and had to be discharged, but I wonder if he has to return because his knee is recovered now.

I think issue with young retiring age is due to poor player health management. People dont retire at 25 in any real sports either, or formulas etc. In real sports, the competitors are really taken care of healthcare wise and they probably dont "play" as much as progamers do, so people burn themselves out so soon.

If Usain Bolt would run 10 hours day, he wouldnt be able to make records at 30+ age, so likely issue is that progaming is not regulated enough and people break their arms and mental health by simply playing too much.

That's a part of starcraft II retiring too.
MMA was such a cool person and a good player, this name will forever resonate in the heart of any sc2 fan.

Well, 27 is not old at all. Trend of retirement age has to be due to something else.

There was few years ago some study where authors tried to prove that at 24 decline starts across all leagues, but it had big flaw where the subjects played less as they aged so it didnt prove anything. Also the data didnt really support it when observed more closely, the falloff of reaction times etc where not exactly something where good conclusions could have been made.

T1, 1 year, as a BW player.

Most progamers debut around the age of 16; which means their heyday comes around 21. Progamers' 10-year- career is not that short, tho it feels quite short in comparison to other sports.

Likely it has more to do with that most players are not succesful enough, so they have to do something else with their life since mediocre pro gamer is not really good career choice yet compared to mediocre football player. When very succesful players retire, it might be because its hard to be best and since they have achieved so much already and its really stressfull to practise 10 hours day etc, retiring at high note or right after might sound good idea even if player might get second wind if continued.

Esports is not developed enough, to really warrant staying on being pro gamer forever unless you are really winning everything everywhere.

I believe flash very well had potential to be the best sc2 player.

He said that he was going to retire around now almost a year ago... I bet this has very little to do with any of the speculated WCS changes or with LotV.

Planned or not though, a legend like MMA retiring is definitely sad.

The reason for Koreans is simple: Military service. For everyone else (but also Koreans): there's no long term stability or money in it.

I am so glad, that he managed to take second place in last years WCS global finals. Otherwise many would say now that he was not up to the level of the kespa guys.

Not surprising, but still very sad. I was never around for MMA's heyday so when he got second place to Life's Blizzcon championship, I quickly dismissed it as bracket luck. Sure, he might have been great back in the day, but now he's just another foreign Korean fighting real Koreans on his home turf.

Then he, Taeja, Bomber, and MC came back to Korea and they all bombed out of their tournaments and fell entirely off the grid... except MMA who immediately proceeded to go to Code S Ro4 where he got taken out by motherfucking PartinG in a motherfucking PvT. I'll never forget that moment of being proven dead wrong about a player. This guy was the real deal, and I only got to experience that for a couple of months.

Apart from that, I've always personally found him the most charming SC2 player.

Good luck in all your future endeavors MMA, I hope you stick around in the scene even if you're not competing.

One of the greatest players to ever touch the game. For me it's always more impressive when a player stays relevant though changing metas (and often time living outside Korea). There's just so much to say, but the first thing that comes to mind are his mlg performances in WOL. He was playing a marine/tank/medi style with frequent drops to snipe hatcheries and get position. It was one of the first times a player was hyped as being "all over the place." There is no doubt in my eyes MMA was the best player in the world several times in his career, even if these highs were short lived. RIP MMA. Gl in the army.

I'll never forget the MMA vs Idra game on iccup test bug where the game went from Idra being ahead into MMA attacking his own command centre into Idra GGing.

It shouldn't come to a surprise to anyone though...MMA announced that he'd only play for another year at the end of Blizzcon last year before heading to the military in 2016. He also said this again when he joined SBENU for proleague. So...it was always going to happen.

In any case, good luck to MMA! Thanks for all the games over the years.

MMA was truly one of the SC2 greats. I see so few familiar names these days compared to 2010-2012. I feel like an old man even though I only went from 15-20. Really underscores just how short most pro-gaming careers are.

I'm more than OK with the Sc2 scene being lean and mean. GL in life MMA, you made it to the top but the game is racing ahead of you and the old guard. It's probably past time you dropped out. Once all of these old ESF guys hang up their boots we'll have a nice fresh Korean lineup with the "veterans" being seasoned KESPA players. These ESF guys hanging around is kind of reminiscent of the 1914 French Cavalry in the Great War, brilliant looking with a storied and valorous past, but not up to the current military standards. Thank you for your service MMA, you will not be forgotten.

Damn, that sucks hardcore, I remember his blizzcon 2014 run really well, he was so good there, he surprised me alot with his sudden results. However I expected this retirement to come sooner or later, he stated after blizzcon 2014 that he was planning to retire, but he was looking to play 1 more year because the fans cheered so much for him. After the first season of GSL I stopped hearing from MMA in terms of results. So this retirement was always looming on the horizon.

What a load of crap. MMA got second place in Blizzcon 2014 en ro4 in a GSL last year. He was also competitive in Pro-league. That's more than all but a handful of the current Kespa crop can boast with.

Aw, sad. Another fantastic Terran bites the dust. MMA never quite inspired me as much as FlaSh (I mean come on, it's a pretty preposterous notion, considering) but he really showed lots of clever play with this kind of warrior/underdog mentality in the later years and really stepped up with some massive and clutch performances on the biggest stages... had some surprising runs even though I would think that many thought he was well past his peak and had "lost it" in a sense.

Even though he eventually lost the Bo3, he was part of one of the best TvT series I've seen in SC2 against Innovation in a Dreamhack semifinal. Very clever player with a great mentality and personality, but it seemed he had been declining a bit for a while (kind of how FlaSh seemed to do in 2015)... the scene will miss him.

Considering what? MMA was far more successful in SC2 than Flash was, and unless you watched BW, MMA would have been a lot more memorable.

Favorite terran player gone.

Starting out as a team player, yet having already gone against impossible odds to bring his team to victory numerous times, then slowly transitioning that play into his first title win with MLG and coming back to face Polt at the super tournament finals. He's showed us a plethora of great games, narrowly defeating players in their prime despite being in severe disadvantages, yet it wasn't just his games, but his career as a whole too as he had come back from the SlayerS disaster with reinvigorated play in team leagues and eventually solo tournaments again, culminating with his last hurrah at last years' global finals and semi-final run at the hardest tournament in the world.

He's always come back from the brink of defeat, and I'm sure he'll do so again, should he ever decide to come back to us as a player.

Thanks for all the memories MMA! I'll always remember MLG Columbus 2011 as his break out tournament and one of the points at which the sc2 scene exploded. I remember when he went back home and played in that super tournament final against Polt as the heavy favorite. When he lost my heart was crushed and I thought he might just fade into mediocrity after that. However, like the rest of his career would show, MMA was resilent and bounced back.

I don't think people are retiring because of lotv. I think it's mostly because of the way scene is developing

I thought it was known already that MMA was retiring at the end of this year for a while. Am I thinking of someone else?

No actually. Also Polt, TaeJa and Bomber are kind of in the similar position

Bomber might have already retired idk

TaeJa is listed in the SSL Qualifier for today/tomorrow, maybe he reconsidered

Yep Taeja will be there, not GSL though.

If Starcraft was my job I really dont think I could put up with what blizzard has done.

Yes. It's a natural time for transition, and I think people who were thinking of retiring tend to feel like between expacs is the best time.

As far as WCS goes...the community tends to see any unknown major changes as negatively as possible.

MMA has been one of my favorite players since the SlayerS days...we love you MMA, and you will be missed!

Mass retirements? I know of Flash and MMA as the big names. Plus, the biggest reason for Korean players is the mandatory military service, what better time to get that out of the way than when a new game has just come out and your skill level may not be consistent with what you showed in the previous game? Pretty sure there were comparable retirements during WoL to HotS period as well.

People also don't realize there's no big thread for every up and comer, the guy who might be a royal roader next year, or the next big proleague sniper (etc) so if all you read about is retirements it might seem like that way
Edit: Almost forgot, best of luck MMA, one of my favorite Terrans

I think Bomber was supposed to have retired for a year now. Same with Taeja.

But, they're Koreans, so they'll keep grinding until they have to join the military.

Considering what? MMA was far more successful in SC2 than Flash was, and unless you watched BW, MMA would have been a lot more memorable.

Of course MMA was far more successful in SC2 than MMA was. More decorated for sure. But again, would have been interesting to see how he fared in later-2013 through 2015 if he stuck in Korea the entire and tried to grind it out in the Korean being a regular for a top Proleague team but he didn't go that route... anyway just saying, I'll leave it there..

Don't get your panties in a bunch. [Another "hater" I presume huh]. I really enjoyed watching MMA play and have massive respect for his accomplishments. Just saying it's hard to measure up with someone like FlaSh entire Starcraft legacy and his impact on the game in general, on the who, who similarly just recently retired and was a player I personally loved hence why I made that comment. That is all... Interesting you'd pick up just that part of post to reply to like that... but I guess that speaks to the some sections of the fans and their fandom with SC2.

I've always loved this saying, and it's inspiring when the "older" heads come back against the odds to acheive some sort of success when big changes in games/sports/etc occur and they come back after many have counted them out and show some of their past true brilliance, despite any possible personal problems or other compromising issues (health, decline in mechanical skill, that kind of stuff). MMA was always a warrior and real champion, and that attitude is always inspiring to see. Again, sad to see him go now, even it was kind of seen coming.

Keep in mind MMA, like many recent retirements, are guys with relatively long progaming careers. You cannot do this forever.

I guess many decided to leave with LotV since learning a new game just to quit a few months afterwards doesn't make sense.

Now, the problem really is that we don't have enough new faces, but they do exist and its probably enough. Its not keeping up with retirements but SC2 has more than enough players atm.

It was odd to me that he was not on SBENU roster... did not want to think this would happen.
His play was so memorable, the legacy of BoxeR.
Still remember that first WCS finals I watched, MMA did a hidden rax to MC and beat him in the most impressive way I had seen like ever.

You could easily be succesful progamer well into your 30s. Actually one of the best csgo players are almoust 30, people tend to play cs longer than sc.

People retiring around 25 or even earlier, very likely doesnt have to do anything with actual age itself.

Look at NesTea - you can definitely be competitive as an older gamer. The difficulty in Korea is twofold, in that the army puts a hard limit on retiring age (it's pretty doubtful that anyone coming out of their two year stretch will ever hit peak level again), plus the fact that mid-tier gamers in Korea don't actually earn that much in prize money (and salary as well I'd guess). At some point, going for a career has to take precedence over living the esport dream.

This is very sad to me but expected, and i think a smart choice to retire now.

MMA was the main reason i started loving starcraft, his inspiring play at the finals with Losira at MLG made me realise how awesome starcraft could be, since that day MMA was like my idol and i've never followed someone as much as i did with him, i must have watched more that 90% of his streamed played games for sure.

Guess i started playing with him and will stop playing with him as well.

Thank u friend for all this years with me i'll miss you.

Usually the ones who are not very successful - in that case, their retirement usually comes with little fanfare and notice.

The ones whose retirements we notice are the successful ones usually, and they have the tournament titles, $$$ and fans.

even the one who wheren´t to successful are more like "yeah maybe i should quit faster but it was fun" i remember darkforce for example said something like that after his retirement (i´m not 100% sure that he was the one). but i think that nobody who has no fun in playing would be a progamer for a longer time, so even if it is a "mistake" in the economic way most players don´t judge there career by that aspect.

Can't get attached to any korean players because the military will make almost all of them retire after a few years or less.

Oh that bolded part is so true! That MLG was the most fun I've ever had watching any tournament and that incredible final vs Losira showed how amazing the game could be. One of the biggest highlights for me since I started watching Starcraft in March 2011

Lots of talk about the military stuff, but does he even have to go? He was dispatched because of an injury when he went to the army for the first time. Is it mandatory to complete the service even if you were formerly dispatched?

It's not a waste of time if you're like Flash I guess. You earn a lot of money before you're 18, then you retire when you're 23-24 years old (slightly earlier could have been ideal if I were Flash) and go for a university degree. For anyone else, it's probably a waste if time unless they want to get some degree which won't help earn much money.

Why do thise high quality players retire so young? Especially flash.

They notice that SC2 scene isn't big as it once was. They used to play brood war and was "forced" to play sc2 because blizzard and kespa said so. Well you make the two points. Also, all progamers who leave sc2 and come to afreeca seem to say "sc2 was pure no fun" and start playing bw without even buying LOTV
