Year-month-day is the international computer standard, as well as the way east asian nations connote date. Americans usually move year to the end, but month before day is far from a uniquely American thing.

That would be a lot more viable than you might think. It's easy driving distance of a 3.5 million metro area, and the venue costs would probably be astonishingly low.
EDIT: actually, come to think of it, that's more of an ESL thing, since Dreamhack is more of a convention-style event that hosts tons of different games and has lots of people who are there to play and to compete, rather than to spectate.
