TeamLiquid is looking for new StarCraft 2 writers to keep up its league coverage in 2014. We're looking for writers who can do recaps and previews for tournaments that we cover.Positions and Application ProcessStarCraft II WriterDescription: Writers are responsible for writing previews, recaps, features, and other written content for TeamLiquid's StarCraft II coverage. In the case of previews and recaps, it is crucial that they are written in a timely manner. Writers must be able to write both concisely and at length, depending on the situation. The ability to recognize and develop narratives is also a must. Tournaments with priority at present time are DreamHack, SPL, IEM, Proleague and WCS with other tournaments being covered as manpower allows. Positions are not paid and are on a strictly voluntary basis. Passes for leagues covered will be provided. How to Apply: Send an application containing the following information to plexa@teamliquid.net (Plexa) - Your TeamLiquid.net ID and Skype information. For coordination purposes, we require writers to use Skype.
- Short introduction and relevant background information as it pertains to this position. Please do not send resumes.
- Preferred league or tournament to cover.
- Availability and desired workload.
- Applications are open indefinitely.
Two test writing assignments must also be completed. - Tournament Recap (around 600 words) - Example 1 - Example 2 - Example 3
Write a concise recap on the events of a single day in a major tournament. This is NOT a battle report assignment. Try to tell an interesting story about the tournament and players as a whole, rather than listing the details of several matches. The above examples are only references, feel free to be creative with your style. Any major tournament after March 1st, 2014 may be chosen as the subject.
- Preview Article (700-1000 words) - Example 1 - Example 2 - Example 3
Write an article previewing some future tournament (as of the time of writing, good choices could be Red Bull Battle Grounds Atlanta, Dreamhack Valencia or IEM Shenzhen). The preview should not preview the entire event if there are many competitors, but should cover a main storyline leading into the tournament. A main storyline includes, but is not limited to, looking at a tournament favorite or popular player going into the event, looking at a team going into the event and any tournament specific storylines (e.g. "Royal Roaders" in GSL).

Hey look! Protoss won! Am I hired?!?
In all seriousness, I hope you find quality guys. I greatly appreciate the write ups when I don't have the time to watch/catch up on VODs. Best of luck applicants/searchers.
|
I wish I was still really actively watching SC2 all the time, I'd be jumping all over this. I hope y'all get some real quality (not me lol), I love the write ups when I can't get the time to watch SCII.

This is not for twitch viewers for those that complained about 100-200 word essays :O:O
|
I wouldn't mind editing articles for grammar/quality, but I don't think I could write an original piece
I just don't follow the SC2 scene closely enough and barely feel dedicated enough as it is to continue to play/watch every single day. Gl to anyone who wants to apply though.

Not sure if we are currently looking for editors, but shooting a PM to Plexa can't hurt I guess?

I'm wondering what are some of the resources you could use besides Liquipedia and Aligulac when doing research and looking for player stats? Looks like a great opportunity.

Was searching TL earlier today for writing jobs, cool
|
Estimated Salary?
Edit: sorry, I just read the end of the first paragraph.
|
I'll be submitting my app tomorrow since i have homework tonight
|
What's the estimated time commitment? How often do articles need to be written/specific tournaments watched?
|
" Tournaments with priority at present time are DreamHack, GSTL, IEM, Proleague and WCS with other tournaments being covered as manpower allows"
the return of GSTL!?!?!?!?
|
I already had my storylines and tournaments planned out for my application by the time I realized I couldn't be sure I'd have the time to commit to the gig.

might apply seeing as its a good opportunity to try and gain my passion for SCII lol. I would also like to know the time commitment if possible even though I'll likely be able to meet it

I think it was just copied from the last time they were seeking writers.

Can one of the leagues covered be the CSL? That would be what I am most interested in doing. Especially since I am in the US currently.

Time commitment really depends on how quick (and how well) you write. If you write fast, then you spend less time. If you already watch most of the tournaments it's not that much bigger. Obviously we won't ask you to write for a tournament that you have no opportunity to watch.
Most writers have at least one or two articles to do each week, sometimes more or less, depending on tournament congestion.

This is something I've considered for a while but I don't know if I'll be able to consistently offer my time plus my parents would probably get mad at me if I started slacking on other things to fulfill a commitment to TL. We'll see though.

On July 09 2014 14:17 XilDarkz wrote: Not sure that any SC2 writers are left that would do this without pay, especially given Team Liquid having actual revenue generated from their site... To be honest, I'm 25 years old, I do some casting for Taiwan eSports League, and I also have a day job (so about half of my income is from my dayjob). Twitch revenue some times doesn't even make it worth my time to cast something unless there is nothing to compete with on the front page of teamliquid.
Writing for free is something I will do very seldom nowadays due to my lack of spare time.
|
Well I have to be one more that chimes in just so say that there's no time, between a full time job and my rabid girlfriend picking up the spoils of my time every single day... I have hard enough time being able to catch glimpses of the tournaments/matches i really want to watch. Most tournaments are either during my work time (where I often watch in background but can never count on really being able to watch) or after I've gone to bed.
Thats also why I really rely on TL writers to tell me what I've missed and whats going on, I really think you guys are amazing and the hype you can get going in anticipation of a tournament is mind boggling. I hope you find a few writers that can keep the torch going!

Liar liar pants on fire. Legacy of the void will come out before that would happen.
In all honesty, it is true that everyone has homework/school/work that occupy most of his/her time. Not a lot of people are willing to volunteer their precious down time for free, I get that. But if you really think about it, TL is a community, and it's about give and take. We are all grateful for the existence of TL, for providing insightful analysis and comical relief, it's really my main SC news source. Most of the people working behind the scenes do it out of love and passion for the game, and we all feed off of that.
So to those of you who are more than capable but don't have time: If everyone is willing to contribute even just a little bit, there would be more quality content. Even as amazing as our current writers are, it's hard to keep up with all the billion events going on at the same time. Take a little, give a little, and help our lovely community grow even more. Who knows, your 1 or 2 article contribution per month might be the most important writeups of the year.
Oh, and yes, not to mention dem eSports fame and internet recognition :D
But then again you'd have to work with Lich... Hmmm.... Sometimes it's worth it- my personal coping mechanism is wine.
edit: lichter is awesome

This one stood out. There are some fairly simple grammar and spelling mistakes. What I found most annoying though was the wordiness. Is there a contest to see who can write the longest sentence?

I understand the thought process behind this. However, Team Liquid does generate revenue based on the number of people viewing the website, and high-quality articles increase the number of people who will view the site. Most sites that run both articles and ads follow this model. For example, when I write my articles for Ars Technica, I'm paid for my work.
I'm a good writer (if I wasn't, Ars wouldn't have been paying me for nearly a decade) and I'm also passionate about Starcraft 2 to the point of absurdity. I would love to contribute to Team Liquid as a writer. But I can't, because I don't want to devalue myself as a writer, and devalue writing in general.
I realize that maybe the numbers aren't quite there to support paying authors on Team Liquid. There is always a shortage of money in eSports. But if you paid your writers, you'd get higher quality work, and you'd get more consistency. You'd get people willing to write for you for longer, who would then build up a more loyal reader following over the years. In time, this could generate more traffic and more revenue, and maybe even more interest in eSports.
It's just a thought.

Will be sending my application tomorrow, but I have a general question.
Are the assignments due the same day/evening an event concludes, for editing, etc.? Alternatively, what is the timeline for a preview article? 2 days, 3 days? Just curious
|
I wish I had the level of commitment to do this, but I can't even commit to helping with Liquipedia half the time.
|
Someone give me a writing prompt for a preview, I haven't been tracking any of the upcoming tournaments so I don't know where to start. I know there are some suggested tournaments but that doesn't quite help me know what storylines are interesting in them. D:
|
I tell myself I'm going to apply every time and then I convince myself I won't have the time. Maybe I'll actually try this time
|
Too bad i'm not good enough to do this.
|
I hope stating my opinion here doesn't get me banned. I assume that this is not a paid position because TL can't afford it. I'd like to assume that if they could afford it, they would pay for this position. Being a writer for a website like TL and the demands for quality set by precedent is extremely taxing and demanding.

As I don't have the net at home for the moment, I don't know when I'll be able to submit an application... (but that works anyway with a preview of any upcoming tournament then I suppose, right?).
