Apicella has shared through reddit about how the qualification process for Anaheim will work. There will be an open bracket on-site, in addition to online qualifiers where entrants are selected through invites and fan voting and one online qualifier that is double elim and totally open.

Qualifiers

There will be seven different Anaheim Qualifiers for the 12 pre seeded pool spots. The qualifiers will be open to citizens of the Americas or physical residents (so yes Violet, Polt, etc. can play in them).

  • There will be three 16 player qualifiers. Players will be added through a combination of invites and fan voting. Format will be GSL groups to a single elimination bracket. 1st place of each qualifier will receive a pool play spot.
  • There will be three 28 player qualifiers. Players will be added through a combination of invites and fan voting. Format will be single elimination. 1st place in each qualifier will receive a pool play spot.
  • There will be 1 open online qualifier on Gamebattles. Format will be double elimination. The top 6 in the open qualifier will receive a pool spot.

Open Bracket at MLG Anaheim June 20-22

The open bracket at Anaheim will be open to any player globally. 192 Player Open Bracket; Top 4 Winners Bracket Players advance to Championship Pool Play; Top 4 Losers Bracket Players advance to Championship Bracket. Format can be found in the link at the beginning of the post.

Qualifier Dates

Qualifier dates will be announced soon and will start in April. Casters TBD.

28 player single elimination qualifier? How is that supposed to work?

Pre seeding to get 4 walkovers?

Why not fill the bracket then? Give more players a chance

Helps to avoid some of the rounds that are basically walks anyway like JD vs. a gold Terran etc etc etc.

Well, do you really expect Korean pros to drop $3000 on flights and hotel to the US just to duke it out in the open bracket? Invites are fine and a pure open bracket is not reasonable for players that have to spend so much getting to the event.

That's exactly what they expect, considering the qualifiers are not open to Koreans living outside North America.

Well yeah, but as far as I know there are no Korean pros living in South America.

Ah, I missed that part. Well anything that secures Polt a shot is ok in my book.
At the end of the day, MLG is trying to make the best event for the viewers, which means making sure fan favorites are in streamed matches.

I'm fine with this, let's hope some teams send players from EU and KR. If not Scarlett vs Polt will still be nice to watch .
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

If no monster koreans come to the open bracket then Polt ezpz
Actually expect Bomber to try out for the OB and would be a blast to see the Acer terrans there :D
Sadly no Proleague players will most likely try out :/
To all the haters: you deserve to witness many, many more Serral victories, worthy of the godlike player he is.

Are leagues really expected to pay for every flight for pro players? What about sponsors and teams?

Teams should always pay for flights. Or players. I have always thought that those who want to attend will do so. Winners want the ball. I'd rather watch some kid who got their on his own dime win than someone who got a paid flight, just because they are popular on the internet.

The amount of US only qualifiers combined with fan voting isn't that great.

It just means in all likely-hood we'll just end up with Scarlet, viOlet, Polt and then some Koreans that Western teams can afford to send out like probably Jaedong, maybe Dear or an Axiom player, who will just sweep the open bracket because of serious lack of competition as all of the decent US pros will have already made it through due to qualifiers. These players will inevitably do the best so it just means we still end up with probably all Koreans in the RO8, which is the only point onwards I can really see myself watching.
