SPL R2 - sOs-less Jin Air to be Tested in Week 4

Sending Out An sOs
Round 2, Week 4 Preview

By: Zealously

Jin Air seized the initiative in week three and climbed to the #1 spot with a 4-1 record. However, they might find their time on top of the standings to be short lived as key players (P)sOs and (Z)Rogue have flown off to Poland for the IEM World Championship. Can ace Terran (T)Maru and bench players like (P)Pigbaby and (P)Terminator protect Jin Air's position?

Spotlight Game: RorO vs MarineKingPrime

Evil vs. Good. Fabulous hair vs. silly glasses. Swarm host turtle vs. 11/11 rax.

(Z)Samsung_RorO has quietly racked up a 9-3 record this season is easily the Proleague's best performing Zerg. Many of his wins have come from less... savoury games, usually involving a large number of swarm hosts and static defenses. Because of this, Roro has gained quite a following , one that includes as many anti-fans as fans. The same morbid fascination that compels us to watch Mana vs Firecake or Reality vs Soulkey also compels us to eagerly await what RorO might do in his next game.

With this in mind, there are few opponents that could be more fitting for him to play than (T)MarineKing. His brief hiatus and eventual return to Starcraft has reignited a flame of hype that seemed snuffed out after his 'retirement'. He brings star power and energy to a Prime team that looked like they were dead men walking in Round 1.

His tendency to break down in pressured situations is well known, as is his apparent inability to stray from his preset 3CC or all-in build order coin flip. So on paper, this match looks like it's the very recipe of embarrassment for Prime and MKP. But even so, there are certain qualities to this match that make it a must-watch. As one in a long line of Prime proxy-rax experts, we could very well see this MKP decide this game within five minutes. Or we could see RorO repeat Reality vs Soulkey and stage a scenario where neither player can or wants to risk attacking into fortified positions.

But in all the ways this game could possibly play out, every one involves upsetting one fan or another. Roro vs. Marineking is a match you should tune in to for the drama and tears alone, if not the actual gameplay.

Must Watch Match #1: KT Rolster vs SK Telecom T1

(P)Zest < Frost LE > (Z)Soulkey
(T)TY < Yeonsu LE > (T)BrAvO
(T)Flash < Outboxer > (P)Rain
(P)Stats < Polar Night LE > (T)FanTaSy
Ace:The King Sejong Station

Last time the two Telecom teams faced off, SKT were made to look like fools as Zest tore SKT's line-up to shreds. SKT may be safe from the rage of the blood-covered Wooki in this match, but only partly. Soulkey has not been convincing recently, which raises the question if he's capable of taking on the GSL quarterfinalist. Beyond the first match, you can look forward to TY playing a TvT against Bravo and Flash getting a rematch against Rain.

As is customary in Telecom derbys, this is a hard match to predict. The match certainly feels like it will come down to whether or not Flash can beat Rain. If he can, then KT has a fighting chance with Zest as the ace. If he can't, then KT's slightly weaker line-up will probably falter before they can get to the ace match. There is also the matter of Fantasy. He's looked great against Zergs so far this round (going 3-0), but looked less than impressive against Creator. Unpredictable as he is, it's hard to say which Fantasy we'll get to watch, but I will cautiously predict the stronger, and much more entertaining, version.

Prediction: SKT 3 - 1 KT

Must Watch Match #2: MVP vs Jin Air Green Wings

(P)Billowy < Sejong Station > (P)Terminator
(Z)DongRaeGu < Outboxer > (T)Cure
(P)Super < Polar Night LE > (P)Pigbaby
(T)KeeN < Yeonsu LE > (T)Maru
Ace:Habitation Station LE

With two of Jin Air's three most valuable players sOs and Rogue off to chase $100,000 in Poland, the former Team 8 is left with a much diminished line-up against MVP. With dual wins over KT and SKT, what was once known as Team DRG seems to have found a little confidence as they have re-entered the playoff race. With their form being the best it has been since joining KeSPA, MVP has a great opportunity to take out a weakened Jin Air line-up in this match.

Billowy (who has been mediocre ever since his conquest of China in 2013) has gotten the best draw he could have hoped for against Terminator, who is 1-4 vP this season. Provided Billowy can win the first map, then it's definitely possible, perhaps even likely, that DRG's ZvT and Super's PvP can clean house before Maru gets a chance to play. And even if it does get to the fourth and fifth mapswhere MVP is forced to face the Terran prodigy, Super has proven himself more than capable of tackling a PvT ace match.

Of course, no MVP match is complete without mention of DRG's inconsistency. Sometimes incredibly good, sometimes incredibly not-good, you never know which half of DRG you'll get - the one who missed Busan or the one who sent Genius off to the military, but it certainly feels like his team's success hinges on the once-champion bringing his A-game.

Prediction: MVP 3-0 Jin Air

I'm still astonished by Prime's decision to field (T)eins. I mean, eins over (T)ByuN? Some really weird shit must be going down with ByuN... apparently he is not even at the teamhouse.

Wow MVP taking it 3-0 vs Jin Air? Even with sOs and rouge gone I'd doubt it. Cure isn't exactly a push over. Then again i can see why with MVP stepping it up lately.

Samsung vs Prime should go Primes way with Roro vs MKP up in the air and if Choya can beat Reality or not.

Haha, that would be awesome! And it is even likely if, as you say, Billowy can manage the first map

He's coming out fourth, though, so how likely is he to play at all? (Oof!)

It's definitely partly the fan in me speaking, but I'm not so sure Jin Air are going to fail this test without sOs and Rogue. I can't say I have a huge amount of faith in Terminator, but Pigbaby was very tenacious and impressive in his Proleague game against DeParture (I know it was DeParture, but still...). He put in quite a good run in the IEM Asian qualifier, too. Cure is a very good Terran, and then there's Maru.

The other way to bear in mind is, could there have been a better week for sOs and Rogue to be away? I don't think so, as Jin Air have already beaten the likes of SKT and Samsung, and MVP and Prime are significantly weaker teams - so I think there's some damage limitation there.

Are you kidding me? Why are counting Cure out? He's currently 3-0 in Round 2, with wins over TY, herO, AND Classic! This guy is certainly no pushover and I'm even willing to bet that he'll beat DRG.

That game vs Classic doesn't really count. 2 base Tempest into Carrier on Habitation Station.. like c'mon anyone could've won that game. And his game vs herO wasn't that great either. He's gotten pretty lucky so far imo but we will see I'm curious to see how he does following those wins.

And nobody mentions TRUE? This guy is good as well, he made it into Code S and has a very fun style to watch. I'm sure he can handle himself as well. Jin Air will be fine against these teams.

Also, still no Sora for CJ Entus even with herO gone. Interesting... looks like Coach Park has lost faith in him, which is unfortunate. If they make the playoffs he's going to have to play him eventually...

No but, I mean prior to this I could see Cure winning but I think DRG was favored. Neither significantly favored though.

I predict 3-2 for Jin Air. Cure is pretty decent, and Terminator can win PvP when you least expect it. As long as one of them win, then we can let Maru get his free win :D

That Maru vs Creator ace match... Maru is a fucking god. Best control in all of SC2, easily. He makes plays that know one else even has balls enough to consider. Love it.
