2014 rolls around, viewer numbers are up, legends are returning to Starcraft, MLG gets back in to SC2. Am I the only person that isn't surprised by this? Its like the WWE, wrestlers leave to explore other paths (usually acting, which is a bit like wrestling without the body oil) only to return triumphant 6-12 months later.

Starcraft isn't dying and it never was, it was going thru its adolescence, throwing tantrums and being a rebel. Now its all grown up.

Sometimes your faith is rewarded. Sometimes things are better than they seem. Sometimes the negativity is all sound and fury, but means nothing in the end. Sometimes you just need to ignore than and watch what you like. And every once and a while you can watch them eat crow.

I wonder how much of these numbers are from OGN no longer doing Proleague, thus possibly shifting over a portion of the viewer base who would've otherwise watched the games on TV or at the OGN studio.

what about outside Korea? I'd say the viewership has more than tripled

I haven't seen much of a change in Twitch viewership

twitch for SPL this season is easily 2-3x more than last season, we regularly break 20k now whereas before it was 5-10k or so for most games

Indeed. I have seen 30k+ during Samsung vs SKT, while previous season Grand Finals peaked at 18k...
Interesting thing - OGN global channel for LoL is usually about 30k-40k for regular games, which is not that much of a difference. Imo that says there is not that much difference in hardcore viewers (so the people who are willing to watch the best games even in unusual hours) but there is huge amount of casual people who just watch LCS and player streams.

There are two other channels. One gives you hd for free but we dont have viewer numbers for that and the other one is dailymotion. 30k is really low these days for OGN Twitch. I would say its more around 40k-50k

We are so far away from that. Last year was our community being butthurt over not being number 1 anymore that's all. SC2 will stick around until star 3 comes out and the last place it would ever "die" is Korea.

It was dying when people were crying that it was dying.

It's up to the fans to decide whether the game continues on or the game dies.

Haha I laughed at the "Peak during Reality vs Soulkey". That talks about dedication hahahaha !

Well, this is good news in fact ! Cheer up people, we're doing good (but don't let that refrain yourselves of pushing it further: kidnap your family and put them in front of tournament streams naw !)

It was obvious. There were always crowds at the venue.

I'd also like to say it's deserved though. SPL has got it all. Story lines, players, casters, production, an underdog. Everything.

Makes me wonder how many of those who despised the game actually watched it. The first 40 minutes is some of the highest-level TvZ with awesome strategical plays & art-of-mech demonstration, the remainder is also unique in its own never-seen-before (or again) way. Who didnt spam TL while watching every locust killed during that game? Dont tell me you didnt have fun watching that live

The last hour and a half of that game was for lack of a better word a moment. Whether you thought it was good or bad it was still a moment that will live on for years to come and it was something you had to see for yourself.

Definitely story materials. I think we're not done seeing this game mentioned because of its length and the controversy around it!

And true, though sometimes a bit long, there was still action in this game before the fatal near-stalemate. But I still found it interesting after quite some time, as it shows a situation both players aren't used to

Proleague fighting! I gave in and finally signed up for Twitch for the express purpose of buying a subscription to Proleague (not that I've ended up using it that much....)

What I like to see is that Proleague is making/boosting newer stars (Solar, Byul, TY, Zest (yes yes I know 3 of those have been around a long time, what I meant was getting more into the spotlight)) and seeing how they stack up vs the legends like Flash and Soulkey. I think it can only improve with the addition of the ST players and the return of MKP.

Great analogy - it's unfortunate I can't get the image of oiled sc2 players 'returning triumphantly' out of my head

I love positive news like this, it seems we're lead to believe sc2 is dying hardcore, especially in Korea, so perhaps this is the beginning of the new trend, when sc2 makes a huge come back! Lol I have to hope, I mean blizzard essentially has made a good bit of sc2 free and I wonder if internet cafes in Korea reflect this with higher sc2 numbers

I hope this doesn't mean that Korean viewers actually like boring Swarm Host stalemates. The last hour of that Soulkey Reality game was so boring I started looking at porn in another tab.
