The King: IM_Mvp - Road to Blizzcon #1

Text byTL.net ESPORTS

2013 WCS Europe

IM_Mvp is in a deep rut headed into Blizzcon, but the legendary champion's career has taught us that he can never be counted out.

by stuchiu

In a game where we glorify players with all sorts of titles, royalty is an all too common theme. MarineKing, GhostKing, Crown Prince, Queen of Blades, King of the North, King of Lings are just a few of the many official and unofficial monikers with regal aspirations. It is quite telling then, that (T)IM_Mvp is simply called "The King." He needs no qualifiers or adornments because he exists on another plane entirely, his record four GSL titles in six finals appearances and numerous international titles far outshining any other player's accomplishments.

The King is in a slump. After winning WCS Europe Season 1 and getting to the semi-finals in the Season 1 grand slam, things went drastically south for the greatest SC2 player of all time. In WCS Europe Season 2 he dropped out the Ro16 against Grubby and HasuObs. He didn't even make it past the Ro32 in Season 3, losing to Showtime twice in an early elimination.

It's not just the poor results that make Mvp's current slump worrisome. It's all about the way he is losing. He's making uncharacteristically poor decisions, choosing builds that make no sense, and showing increasingly poor micro. To make matters worse, all of this is happening as Mvp faces foreigner peasants, not the elite players of Korea. Taking these factors into consideration, one can say that this isn't any ordinary slump, but that Mvp is experiencing the deepest downswing of his legendary career. One might even dare start wondering if he's finished as a championship caliber player.

But of course, we know better. We know better than to say he had an incredible run three-year run, crown him the best of all time, and then respectfully write him off for Blizzcon. We know because we've felt this way about Mvp before, and we've always been incredibly wrong.

Mvp is amused to hear your doubts.

After ruling StarCraft 2 with an iron fist for most of 2011, Mvp's play started to deteriorate after a finals loss to MMA in October of 2011. The pain in his shoulder that prevented him from practicing properly finally started to show up in his gameplay, even though results-wise he finished the year strong. The severity of Mvp's situation was revealed in 2012 when he took a nosedive to start the year, getting eliminated in the Ro16 of the first Code S and then Ro24 of the first MLG. Combined with the ascent of players like MMA, DongRaeGu, MKP, and PartinG, many had already written off Mvp as a venerable but frail veteran when the second Code S of the year came around.

While Mvp managed to surprise by clawing his way past each round, his gameplay was what everyone expected: that of an old fighter getting by using every dirty trick, every bit of veteran savvy, and every last ounce of strength he had left. When Mvp reached the finals, many doubted if he had anything left to show after having thrown in everything and the kitchen sink to get that far. Instead, Mvp shined even brighter in the finals, triumphing 4 - 3 over Squirtle who could not find his footing on such a grand stage. With a daring 2-barracks proxy—a favorite of many great Terrans—Mvp closed out the series to take a hard-earned fourth GSL championship.

However, Mvp wouldn't stay "back" for long and he almost immediately started to show poor play again. With another series of early drop-outs at various tournaments, Mvp's previous GSL run looked more and more like a one-off miracle than a sign of anything permanent. Elimination from HSC 5 at the hands of foreigners Ret and Naama suggested that the grand finals win against Squirtle was only a temporary reprieve before an inevitable demise.

Once more, Mvp put the doubters in their place. He chose IEM Cologne as his stage, coming in with an innovative TvZ banshee-mech build of his own devising, specifically-tailored to crush the rising "patchzerg" class. This time around, Mvp had no need for painstaking efforts or dramatic games—he simply stomped over some of the best players Europe had to offer en route to the championship.

Yet, even Mvp couldn't hold out against the might of brood lord-infestor forever, and he spent the last couple of Code S tournaments of WoL stuck in the Ro32. This poor form alongside a switch to the easier WCS Europe region inevitably led many to question Mvp's abilities yet again, despite all past evidence showing that doubting Mvp is a very foolish thing.

The doubts were very briefly justified in the group stages of WCS Europe as Mvp dropped series to DIMAGA and Lucifron, but championship Mvp showed up in time for the quarter-finals. With a 3 - 0 vs. TLO, 3 - 0 vs. DIMAGA, and 4 - 1 vs. Stephano, Mvp made it three consecutive years with a major championship won. And just for good measure, he went on to the WCS Season 1 Finals, reached the semi-finals, and came within a hair of knocking INnoVation out of the tournament (the series included a 9 vs. 30 SCV comeback game).

It's true that the level of playing Mvp is showing now is even lower than any of those those so-called "slumps" of the past. Conventional logic dictates that if Mvp wants to make an impact at Blizzcon, he will have to make the biggest comeback of his career. But honestly, conventional logic couldn't mean less.

Many say that Mvp is the most like Flash among all the SC2 players, and that comparison is fair if you are just counting championship. But it doesn't take into account Mvp's greatest quality: overcoming adversity. Mvp is Boxer in 2004, Nada in 2006, and July in 2008. He is the old champion who shows that class—an intangible, poorly defined, quasi-mystical quality—truly is a thing, and that it is truly is permanent.

There is no reason to believe in Mvp. His form has fallen, his health has only gotten worse, and his opponents grow more fearsome by the day.

There is every reason to believe in Mvp. Victory at all cost. Victory by all means. Victory against all odds. That is what he stands for.

Hail to the King.

No respect after that tourney...

You know he beat Tails, Parting, Ganzi, Polt, MKP, Nestea, and Squirtle to win it. #invisibleterran

13: Mvp - The King
14: aLive - ???

Mvp can be #14 and aLive can be #13. aLive, as Revival, still has a Challenger group to play in WCS AM and so, can still earn 25 points that could move him ahead of Mvp.

Well it makes sense for them to use current rankings.

aLive is in a kind of weird position where if he wants to he can slightly chose his matchup. If he wins (in challenger), he plays JD, and if he loses he plays Polt.

If he plays Polt, I think he has a chance to at least get to round of 8
If he plays JD, I guess he gets owned. I guess the TvZ matchup is too demanding of apm, multitasking, micro, etc
In TvT he could still get away with strategy, positional play, etc

Speaking of the "ways" in which MVP has been losing lately...I would almost go so far to say that he wasn't even trying and did not even want to win or travel. Like he wanted some time off, a vacation or something....Now I feel like he is going to come into blizzcon in top form and mop the floor for the biggest prize of the year. Nobody can deny that mvp seems to have had a serious lack of motivation lately....

For the past couple months I really haven't been watching starcraft much at all. I tuned in a bit for the WCS finals and that was it. MVP was always the one terran player where I would actually make an effort to watch his games. His overall play strategy is so fun and unique to watch. Just like the article mentions, he'll pull out a 11/11 during the final game of a championship or he'll innovate something new with banshee + mech. The amount of incredible games this player has brought us is outstanding, whether it's the comebacks, the terran skywars with nukes or the scv pulls. Let's not even mention his facial expressions after he wins games. Standing up, fist pumping, cheering, he brings in the energy.

I know I will be rooting for MVP to win Blizzcon. I believe he deserves it and having him win it all, showing that the old kids on the block still have a fighting chance over the kespa gang. He is without a doubt, the best starcraft 2 player so far and I believe he'll be fighting his heart out during Blizzcon.

Let's go MVP!!!!!!!!

"With a 3 - 0 vs. TLO, 3 - 0 vs. DIMAGA, and 4 - 1 vs. Stephano, Mvp took his third major championship in just as many years"

Not sure what you're going for here, do you not mean ninth major championship...?

Also, you kind of forgot about reaching yet another GSL final against Life.

But otherwise, loved it, SO FUCKING HYPED FOR MVPPPPPPPPPP

I wish Mvp's finals run in 2012 Season 4 was mentioned But regardless, great writeup! Mvp is the player I want most to win out of ANYONE at Blizzcon. Jaedong winning would be amazing, Polt or Hero winning would be so cool, but if I had to choose one player, it'd be Mvp easily, all the way. Fighting!!!

This was a great read. I'm rooting for him this Blizzcon, but I don't have much hope.
But who had hope during the GSL S2 2012? This man is stronger than the Artosis curse, the equivalent of the Anti-Bomber Law and the true King of Starcraft 2.

Every round he wins will be amazing!

Good luck!

MVP has been my favorite player since his first major splash towards the end of the open season. I completely agree that you can never count him out (even though if he never won anything again, he'd still have left a major mark that won't be forgotten).

No respect after that tourney...

You know he beat Tails, Parting, Ganzi, Polt, MKP, Nestea, and Squirtle to win it. #invisibleterran

I know people always compare mma and life, but reading this I just realized another similarity in that they both won their first gsl against mvp, and are the only two to do so in the gsl finals.

Both Triple crown winners.
Both won an iron squid.
Both won the gsl and then the blizzard cup right after.
Then both had a hiatus for a long time and came back together with major tournament wins.
Though mma's was a bit longer.

Would love to see those 2 meet in their peaks some time soon.

Also something that's not much talked about but should be or at least I'm insanely curious and rightfully so mvp being the best player of all time, here it is.

Mvp is a player who at his peak is the best, and when he's not still able to get by with huge tourney wins.

Imo opinion mvp had 3 peaks of pure skill to his fullest with out hindrance from injury.

1Early gsl's when he was topping Korean ladder. He took a gsl and looked amazing. Then he slumped and a couple of months later after seeming he wouldn't stick takes the 2super tournament, then he dipped and came back at an 3mlg with pure god mode, everything about him was god like, he then won mad shit, a gsl, another gsl finals and blizzcon, the second gsl, there was hair thin sliver of skill that went down from the previous month, to me, it kept going down casually, he get's good enough to win, and still shows genius games, but imo, his level last peaked around that time.

So I ask, what's going on with his shoulder? Am I the only one who sit's casually expecting an unwritten promise that MVP will fix his shoulder and have another one of those dominant levels, cause who can touch him at his peak? He's the best best player after over 3 years and yet I expect him to have another reign of pure dominance 3 years in?

QUESTIONS: Am I the only who doesn't hope, but expects mvp returning to a form, does it seem like you've been waiting since gsl and blizzcon for that skill to return? Does it just feel like all his wins past that were mvp being mvp?

Wha'ts up with his shoulder, did it get better, does he still have slight problems? Is it completely fixed and mvp is just trying his ass off but can't get that skill.
Cause I kinda always assumed he was waiting for his arm to heal to go full bonjwa.(Not in a snobby high expectation way, just want to see if any body has this same back room thought)

What I would do to swap alive with life...Alive is great though, seems like the only player not in who deserves based on current skill, scarlett maybe, but alive is the only one to be pushed, and I think you could argue players vs scarlett and visa versa

MVP is still hands-down the greatest to play this game. I don't care even if he shows up and gets swept out, you can't deny the magic that is MVP. My favourite player of all time even if you can't really spend as much time cheering for him anymore thanks to the slumps.

Even though I was never an MVP fan I still would like to see him perform well in this tournament.
But yeah being a Korean gamer is very imba. If you're a non-korean gamer you have to balance your game playing with earning money and your real life. If you're Korean you just sit around playing games all day eating 2 cent ramyun and becoming gosu.

Well, for once, I have to say that I am impressed by the quality of the writing. The middle part felt a bit weak, but the intro and the conclusion were wonderfully well constructed.

Plus, it's the King of Wings, so it helps that it's an interesting topic.

Good job Stuchiu, one of your best work

In TvT he could still get away with strategy, positional play, etc

I'm hoping for this match up. I doubt Mvp will go marine tank against Polt so it's going to be good ol' Bio vs Mech. I can't wait to watch that.

Can't wait to read all of these.

Also it'll probably be Mvp vs JD in round one, tough match for the fans. I think JD will take it, but I'd love to see Mvp advance and go up against Dear and beat him with some well-timed scv pulls.

I like how you write off Mvp during last fall, when he actually made it to the finals and lost narrowly to Life...

I will love you forever, Mvp.

You give Starcraft the one element it will always need: no matter the circumstances, if you practice enough and play creatively, you can always win, no matter how stacked the odds are against you.

seems like an awfully long article for someone who is going to lose in the first round 0-3

just kidding. pretty much expect Mvp to make some crazy run to at least the semifinals just because he's Mvp. Wouldn't be surprised at all to even see him end up in the finals just because this guy knows how to win when it matters.

Then beat Mc (I expect maru to play there but w/e) with amazing macro play (battlecruisers please) and continue to beat mma 4-3 in the finals, closing it out with a 2 rax that seems to fail at first.

I'd be soooo happy if this happens.

Yeah it is, but people are a bunch of chobos!

I'm not sure what to expect. Personally I have little hope for Mvp this tournament, but then again, it's a Bo5 tournament, which is where he normally shines, and with high stakes he seems to perform better. His EU results were terrible the last 2 seasons, but well, that's what he's always done, had trouble in group stages. Still, the article says it all, it's his worst and deepest slump if you look at actual gameplay. But Mvp makes no logical sense.

He definitely still has a championship still left in him. He knows how to win at all costs when disadvantaged either by balance or injury.

Blizzcon is stacked, but I believe in the Game Genie Terran.

Alive was one of the big 4 Terrans during the first half of 2012, along with the 3 letter M acronym Terrans (Mvp, MMA, MKP).

While Mvp won a GSL and IEM Cologne,
while MMA won IEM Kiev and Iron Squid,
while MKP dominated MLG Winter (winning both Arena and Championship)

aLive made the Ro4 of the GSL, won IPL 4 (one of the most stacked foreign tournaments ever), got top 4 at Iron Squid, and after creating controversy from leaving TSL, he joined Fnatic as its ace player and lead it to some pretty good teamleague results (they were 1 game from make the top 4 in GSTL).

I don't like aLive, but I sure as hell respect this son of a gun's skill. His TvT (primarily mech) was amazing to watch, and one of the world's finest.

As for Revival, we don't even know if he'll make the tournament. But this man is living proof that anyone who believes in the EG Curse is, in Stephano's words, "fucking stupid". A lesser known Korean player from the disbanded TSL, who was given a second chance by EG, and has definitely made the most of his chance.

Revival is the ultimate underdog story. People hate him because of affirmative action and the possibility he'll knock the only white guy out of Blizzcon, but ironically, by making the Blizzcon finals all Korean, he adds more meaningful diversity in the form of racial diversity. Will the 3rd Zerg player make it into Blizzcon?

The Global Finals will place the top 16 players of the WCS Standings in a single elimination tournament. The map pool will be identical to that of WCS Season 3, and all matches will be best-of-five, except the finals, which will feature a best-of-seven series.

Aww, no mention of how MVP MVPed his way past Rain to challenge Life?

Rain was the upcoming star and I was hyped.

However, MVP winning against Rain when everyone doubted him was great.

Of course he did lose but only barely (3-4) against Life.

Like Artosis said, MVP showed you that Terran could still win even during the days of Zerg dominance.

great write up don´t know if this has been addressed but there seems to a factual error in this text.

addressing this section of the text :

" Yet, even Mvp couldn't hold out against the might of brood lord-infestor forever, and he spent the last couple of Code S tournaments of WoL stuck in the Ro32. This poor form alongside a switch to the easier WCS Europe region inevitably led many to question Mvp's abilities yet again, despite all past evidence showing that doubting Mvp is a very foolish thing.
"

there was the GSL season 4 where he made the finals against Life but fell just short ( http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2012_Global_StarCraft_II_League_Season_4/Code_S )

Thanks for the write-up! But I won't be cheering for MVP in the season finals (Protoss fighting!).. One thing to note is that in 2012 MVP went back to the GSL finals in season 4, losing to Life 4 - 3 in one of the better ever GSL finals. Not sure why that didn't make the article!

Good read.

Mvp will always be the King of WoL and he's obviously had a little bit left in the tank making it to the 2013 Grand Finals. He's the only player who has legitimately dominated the sc2 scene for a significant period of time.

We've had too many INnoVations who look invincible for a few months and then fall out of the picture.

MVP vs Innovation was one of the best SC2 series ever, even if the games themselves were just hellbat button pressing bullshit, just because it was a retelling of the classic tale, old generation vs the new in TvT.

I expect him to give Polt a run for his money since a strong Terran vs Terran performance doesn't require a lot of hand speed or vitality.

I find it kind of funny that many people are talking about Mvp as if he's an old man. Sure, maybe he's burnt out a little bit but he's only 22. That's three years younger than Polt who is pretty much just as fast and as good at micro as the best.

I think people mean esports age. It doesn't matter how old you really are, esports age usually is the one that matters.

I think a little too much was taken away from the players that beat MVP, especially on LAN setting.
However the hype in this one is great, maybe it won't just be an easy Dear vs Bomber finals.

Something that I have learnt over the years of SC2 is that no matter the odds you don't bet against MVP.

How is he King? MC always won more $ Frankly playing strongest class statistically I put him lower than MC and Nestea both who stood alone for so long with their class on top while good terrans were a dime a dozen. He has no chance IMO so many better.

Nonsense, Mvp was by far the most dominating player SC2 scene has ever seen. Even when he was in horrible physical shape he won a GSL and took Life to a nailbiting deciding game in yet another finals. He beat Innovation with 9 SCVs to 30. He won Blizzcon, MLG, 4 GSLs, an IEM, WCG... the list goes on and on. MC participated in far more foreign tournaments, that's where he made his money. Mvp for a long time never went anywhere but stayed in Korea. When he came over, he won everything. He's the king of SC2.

And they all say travel makes u weak making MCs wins even more impressive. Bottom line money talks in this sport which is directly paid with wins and MVP is #2.

Dat kinda means nothing when u travel abroad and also face weaker opponents, we all know most foreigners are a BYE for koreans and MC took advantage of it.

I would imagine it's his shoulder/wrist/neck thing he's got going on since he's not really had the surgery or taken a good enough long rest to help improve the problem.

Prize money is a silly way to judge who is the best. MC went to a bunch of foreign tourneys, while Mvp stayed in Korea most of the time. When Mvp did go to foreign events, he usually dominated.

His Code S success over such a long period of time makes him head and shoulders above MC and Nestea.

Is that an application to TL.net writer's guild?

Mvp is and always will be the King of Wings though. His time might not be over, but to overshadow himself he has to win Bliz.. - oh wait, he actually can do this!

I'd be a TL writer. I'd do the writeups for all the players that the writers now all find boring

So you'd do a goody writeup?

I would do a writeup for pretty much anyone. Recap any game. Nothing would be too boring for me.

GSL title/finals count matters more than the money

Then stephano sucks. Sorry ony objective measure is cash. Everything else opinion.

By this logic, Fruitdealer is still a better SC2 than Innovation, Jaedong, Symbol, and Soulkey.

I fell in love with mvp's intellect when I was watching IEM Cologne last year.

He didn't pull the two rax all in against zerg even once because he wanted to use it in the finals against Nerchio to give him the biggest surprise.

What i respect most about Mvp is his will power; sure - its always going to be a roller coaster. But what i remember most is when he was injured, considered down and out & went on to win a GSL. The hallmark of a true champion.

Please don't write negative previews of anyone, I know it's fun to hype up players as villains but the fact is I (and many others) love both aLive and Revival and would rather see them win Blizzcon than someone like (insert fan favorite here).

I'm not completely sure if Naniwas (and sometimes Thorzains) title originally originated from GoT(actually ASoIaF). It has its own legacy you know
And as Naniwa is the king of the foreign scene, maybe he could be "The Foreign King" or something, and we'll let Thorzain have King of the North

This guy is so awesome, but I don't think enough people are doubting him yet. He'll probably bomb Blizzcon and then get another Korean championship next season.

Nice write-up, you didn't mention his finals against Life though which in my book was still a remarkable feat.
Considering how bad his wrists were at the time he held his own against the soon to be greatest player of that time.

He said a couple times he doesn't like to do it cause of the seriousness there is no guarentee he will be able to play at all after that treatment.

AGREED. As far as I'm concerned SC2 will always be synonymous with MVP, he defined how it could and should be played to perfection.

MVP has always had this ability to beat players who were better than him. But this is too many monsters one after another. He's definitely from the half of the players that are less likely to win imo, but his games will be entertaining as always.

Mvp is gonna win.
But even if he lost, and retired the very day, his accomplishments in SC2 are unlikely to be surpassed in a few years at least, and never forgotten.

People are far too quick to count him out. He's a strategic and positional genius, that's why in TvT the man is unbeatable. Guess what's the most numerous race at Blizzcon.

Mvp has always been different for me for some reason, like I have never had that feeling around him that rightly is given the title ''monster'' like life, drg, innovation and parting had

he has always been in his own race

he is a level above

he is the king

I'm glad someone said it first. He really is. People still don't want to call him one, but in a couple years time, unless someone comes along that's just as dominant for a longer period of time, you have to call Mvp Bonjwa. He's been so consistent over the years in a game that's harder to be consistent in.

Good read.

We've had too many INnoVations who look invincible for a few months and then fall out of the picture.

I really have to agree. Mvp was the only one that was dominate throughout the game. MC might be able to match him, but he was never dominant for an extended period in Korea. Nestea was to Jaedong as Mvp is to Flash.

I can't count how many Innovations we've had: Seed, Sniper, jjakji, etc.

Neither Seed, Sniper, nor Jjakji, were "INnoVations". INnoVation was incredibly consistent for maybe 10 months. Then he did poorly in WCS Season 2 Finals and WCS KR Season 3. That's when he switched teams as well. Maybe leaving SouL was his downfall, but maybe he just had a rough transition. After Blizzcon, we will know.

Very good write-up..
Also - read one post saying that MVP seems to have become the opposite of Bomber.. well --> WP sir, WP..

Bad that he has to play against JD in the first round, so excited, but so sad as well.. :/
I really think that the tourney should start with a 4x4 group-play..

MVP was never the "favourite type of players" for me, it's more like respect rather than fandom to him.. Partially cause of me being fan to JD, and partially cause the style of MVP is pretty gimmicky.. The guy's like playing some sort of Protoss, only that he's doing it with Terran units..

Still --> very good writeup indeed..
Another world, another place, another universe, won the race.. :) ;) :P

When Mvp dominated everybody it was on the back of being the best macro player in the world. He was the safest player on the planet because he knew the longer a game went on, the more opportunities there were for his opponents to make mistakes while he simply didn't make any, ever. But wrists force mistakes so eventually he had to rely on his insane ability to break down players strategically and come up with the perfect plans to abuse them. Mentally, strategically, physically. Winning a GSL and making another finals (which he should have won) with nothing but that is the most insane feat anyone in sc2 ever achieved.

Nice writeup, but I'm afraid I have to take the side of the doubters on this one. I can't see MVP making it past any of the players at blizzcon. If I had to bet on who is most likely to lose this match at blizzcon, I would bet on MVP.

He was consistent for all of Season 1 and maybe for a very short period before that. That's not 10 months. I agree with most of what you said, though, at least about those players not being "INnoVations". The only other players to be consistent for 3-4 months would be Life, Taeja (sort of) and maybe DRG/MKP in early 2012.

Mvp was consistently inbeatable for a period of time at the end of 2011 on top of remaining a Championship contender for periods in both 2012 and 2013, the only player to manage such a feat.

Inno's consistency starts from very GSL Season 4 of 2012. When he destroyed Code A, and proceeded all the way to semis of GSL 2012 S5. After that, aside from IPL5, WCS S2 and WCS KR S3 he got at least Ro8 in every tournament he was in. Soulkey is about as consistent, but has much worse perfomances in large brackets.
Mvp is the king though, noone has a right to deny that in SC2's case.

Talking about unbeatable, I remember Mvp was Bonjwa in Jan 2011 both online and offline. Even the Korean casters mentioned that nobody wanted to face him because they knew they would lose as they did on ladder.

Yeah, Mvp in Jan 2011 was more dominatingly epic than Inno ever was.
