KeSPA's Team Eight is now officially sponsored by Jin Air (Koraen Air's low cost brand), and has been reformed as the "Jin Air Green Wings." The 8th Team was a team KeSPA had been runing out of pocket since 2011, largely consisting of players from disbanded teams Hwaseung Oz, WeMade FOX and MBCGame Hero.
The Green Wings have expanded to include League of Legends as well as StarCraft II, and will run two LoL squads called "Stealth" and "Falcon." Ten LoL players have been recruited, primarily consisting of players from the former AHQ Korea and a number of former SKT T1 LoL players. The teams had already been competing in OnGameNet's LoL league under the names HGD and ESG, and they will continue to compete under their new names.
For the stable operations of the team, KeSPA will continue to play a part in the operations of the team. Parent company Korean Air and Viamonoh (provider of clothing for Jin Air flight attendents) will be sub sponsors of the team.
Does this mean Jaedong is going back to team 8? Wasn't he only on lease with EG until team 8 found a real sponsor? Or was that a rumor? God I want Jaedong to be on a real team so bad so he can show us his true potential.

Jaedong has a 1 year binding with EG he is on the team until then.
So is Jin Air like the equivalent of jetBlue? Sort of weird having an airline as a sponsor, but I guess the Korean sponsors are all random super companies. I know I wouldn't go fly on a different airline just because someone was sponsored by it... This ain't electronics, ya know?

I think jaedong will go back to team 8 once his eg contract expires. They cut major and others to free up money for the dong's return! Just cause they have a sponsor now, doesn't mean it's an unlimited budget.

EG has Coach Park.. It's not like his practice environment has been lackluster.

It feels more like a LoL sponsorship (2 teams) than a Sc2 sponsorship honestly. It is without a doubt that the addition of LoL to SPL/KeSPA was the catalyst to this sponsorship.
Not that I'm not super psyched about T8 getting a sponsorship, but it may not be the savior of sc2 that people think it is.

If it was a LoL only sponsorship they would have gotten rid of the SC2 division or not even have bothered to sponsored Team 8 and just picked up 2 LoL teams IMO.

I never said it wasn't a sc2 sponsorship as well. It will be a positive for the sc2 part of T8 as well. However it is doubtful that they will focus on Sc2 division as much as the LoL division.
Yay Team 8! But why did TRUE quit just when they got a sponsor? I remember him in one of those team videos on Proleague saying he'd never quit progaming.
Anyway solid sponsor. I always fly Korean Air when traveling to/around Asia.

Yes. That's why many companies have charity programs, outreach programs, and strive so hard to improve their image. Brand equity is very important for large corporations. The profit gained from it is difficult to quantify and is usually not as direct as other means of improving sales, but it does make a big impact over a long period of time.

STX for example had their team budget under "charity" rather than "marketing".
lol at the people wanting Jaedong to be "on a real team". Like his time on EG hasn't shown that he is one of the best ZvT and arguably the best ZvZ players in the game. I sure do want him to leave the team with one of, if not THE best coaches on the entire planet. I am also sick and tired of seeing him at European and American events, if I got to meet The Tyrant at MLG Columbus I think I would just vomit from disgust.
I am quite happy for Team 8 though. I was worried about their future, and along with the STX rumors proleague was starting to sound shaky. With this I think we can expect proleague to be around for quite some time which is great for SC2 and esports!
Man, it would have been kinda great to see Jaedong play under Coach Park, but with the speculation that EG-TL might not even return next season I'm just happy that I'll continue to see JD playing in Proleague.

Huh. I remember waiting with baited breath, day after day starting from the moment they announced the formation of Team 8, back in October 2011, hoping that every time I clicked on Fomos the new headlines would be "Team 8 has a new sponsor!" And I was always disappointed.
Now, two years later, it's finally happened, and I feel almost nothing. It's still a great thing to happen, so I don't want to say "too little too late," but that's just kind of how it seems to me.
I wonder if the plan to cut 4 players was cancelled midway through and that's why we only heard about Major and TRUE leaving?
I wouldn't think so, the player cut wasn't annoyed that long ago, and I'm sure this sponsorship was in talks for a good chunk of time. Perhaps the cut was because JinAir's budget didn't allow for all those players (JinAir being responsible for the bootings)
So does Jaedong go back to the team now because I thought the deal with EG was for 1 year or until they found a leading sponsor
No, Jaedong is with EG til the year is over (october?)

"Savior of sc2 that people think it is" - nobody thinks this is saving StarCraft 2. It is saving a cool proleague team from having to die and then potentially create the "who will the new 8th team be" question.
Sweet! T8 had been sponsorless for so long, I had kinda forgotten that it was an issue at all. Nice to see them on a (hopefully) more sustainable track now.
yeeeeeeeeeeees finally. hard work always pays off! I think if they were to be *the new ACE* finding a sponsor would be very very difficult. But they stood their ground, actually competed and now they earned themselves a sponsor!
I hope JD goes back to his old team. From a fan perspective we will see him less but I think he will be in a better practice environment having to attend less foreign tournaments. Not having coach park hurts but he didn't need good teammates or coaches to dominate BW.
When they got CoCa, I approved of them. Before I hated them. And now, oddly, their sponsorship and change of name has made me like them a lot more. Very cool.

ALSO: in the thread minor mishap (Koraen Air's low cost brand) notice "Koraen"

No Jin Air does not own Green Wings. They only bought naming rights, much like Hite Sparkyz and LG-IM.
I have a question. T8 released 4 players due to financial issues, MajOr was one of them. Now they do introduce JinAir as sponsor which are (I suppose) pretty wealthy. Were the financial issues bound to KeSPa sponsoring or is the deal with JinAir actually so "bad" that they needed to cut 4 players? Just being curious!

I think JinAir is mainly in for LoL, and Team8 is the slot they can fill in, so they pick up team8 theorically. It doesn't mean that they will support SC2 team financially as much as LoL team.

Yeah, they sponsored Brood War team WeMadeFox in the past and 3 OSLs including the second to last OSL but they were absent from SC2 till now so it makes sense that they are in it for the LOL team since its being added to Proleague.
They better pay those big sponsor moneiz to CoCa. (:
As to cutting players, even though their official statement is they didn't have money for them, it could be that they wanted to raise the standard significantly for the remaining players, so they can fully focus on the game.

I had hoped for EG-TL to come back, but having heard iNcontroL's input on it on ITG last night, I have a sinking feeling about this.

This is far more newsworthy than EG's Xth sponsor or some online foreigner team league. It's just huge for the korean scene to have another major company getting involved. Especially with STX's financial troubles.

After the downward spiral that was the transition from BW to SC2 (not talking about the games here, just that Oz/FOX/MBC simultaneously disbanded around that time) things are finally starting to improve again.
I'm happy Kespa is now trying to make two games (LoL & SC2) co-exist in Korea, it makes them less dependent on one thing and more stable, so more interesting for sponsors I guess. And it shows (:
Would still love to see a Proleague with eSF teams though, going back to around 10 teams would be awesome!
So happy for them. Seems to be mainly a LoL team tho so I hope they won't scrap the sc2 division after a season or so because it is such a money dump in Korea atm or something like that.

It's more than a little bit obvious that Team 8 wasn't the focus of this deal. It's great that they got a piece of the sponsorship pie and it's good for publicity but Korean Air aren't new to e-sports and they aren't focusing on SC2.

Considering the CEO's daughter was involved I'd be surprised if it wasn't a major part of the deal. Similar to how the Jin Air OSL was picked up at the last minute (after several Korean Air OSL's) due to a lack of sponsors so was Team 8. It seems Korean Air (AKA the daughter) cares about Starcraft specifically, not just eSports or advertising. I'm well aware it's not Korean Air's first time in SC but it is their first venture into SC2, which is significant.
I'm also pretty sure buying an entire team counts as focusing. 2 LoL teams seems standard for a lot of the major sponsors for player number/practice purposes so the 1:2 argument doesn't really stand up. It's still a single teamhouse for either game and similar player numbers.

I still hope IM and some of the other good GSTL teams have an oppurtunity to enter PL. I rather see the top teams fighting than traditional teams, IM definately deserves to be in PL.
Wow, thats big news. Really great. I have been waiting for this since final BW days.
But what is this trend in TL.net-forums to make threads in SC2 and then only speak about LoL? Are we SC2 players to be convinced to follow the masses of LoL? It's a bit of a shame. When you make a thread in SC2 forums, it should be primarily about SC2, and not exclusively about LoL. It's a shame, considering TL.net's history.

I am almost certain IM would be accepted into Kespa/SPL if LG got involved in a more direct way. EGTL as a foreign experiment notwithstanding, I'm not sure it's likely for SPL to let teams that run themselves into the league. I think they're looking for something more like a long-term commitment and ownership/sponsorship of the team.
If they let IM in, they will want there to be a team called LG IM 5 years from now no matter how well the team does, not for the head sponsor to decide "we ain't doing this anymore" next year and they end up stuck with another Team 8 situation.
Well considering they just picked up CoCa I guess the next thing on their bucket list was to get a sponsor and what do you know.. It's by Korean Air (one of the old sponsors). Is kind of weird because if they were going to sponsor a team I thought they would have done it a lot sooner, but whatever..

Yes, I never said this isn't a positive step for sc2 division of T8. However, it goes to show how big LoL has gotten compared to Sc2. My fear is that eventually Sc2 will be demoted to Special Forces status or be abandoned altogether by KeSPA. It is hard to say that Sc2 is growing.

Your problem is you're not thinking as a corporation. They don't see SC2 as some unique and delicate flower that needs to bloom on its own. It's part of a generic thing called esports where they see it as all the same thing (and audience). It's not a lot different than when someone sponsors the X Games instead of just skateboarding or BMX.
High tide raises all boats, we should be happy that LoL is popular, as it only raises the profile of SC2 in return.

That is some great news and I really hope that this is stable. At the end of the day Jin Air is nowhere near SKT, Samsung and CJ. It's a low cost airline with 8 planes... Let's hope that they will not drop the team after a year. The fact that companies are committing resources in eSports is really good tho.

Not that I'm not super psyched about T8 getting a sponsorship, but it may not be the savior of sc2 that people think it is.
Well, even if that's the case, isn't it awesome that LoL is helping out SC2 aswell now? That shows us that the full incorporation of LoL into KeSPA will bring good opportunities for SC2, too.
Take a harder look. 3rd most played game in PC Bangs. More and more fans showing up to every event, every week. More and more events being broadcasted on TV.
Or, you know, keep your eyes closed if you want.
Does anyone actually have numbers for SC2? I keep hearing SC2 is dead in Korea or that its getting bigger but no one provides the numbers to back it up.

I don't think Dota is on the list? ;o
Dota2 hasn't been released in Korea yet. To play Dota2 in Korea, you still have to play through Steam, so PC bang don't have it. Nexon will make a standalone client later.

I actually stopped taking the PC Bang data seriously after like 2011, South Korea has a stable and developed Internet environment, arguably one of the best in the world, the reason people now play in PC Bang is that they want to play with friends, that's one of the reasons LoL places #1, but with more and more players play at home, plus SC2 isn't really a play-with-your-friends game, it's low presence in PC Bangs is not a surprise. I remember there was a thread talking about a more general video game data in Korea, SC2 is steadily placed in the top 10, the streamer data from Afreeca supports this.

Very true. A decade ago it was a pretty valid way to check which game was the most popular. Now it doesn't really matter where you play SC2, so why bother going there when you can have exactly the same experience at home, besides the few times you want to 4v4 with a few friends or something.
I like the fact SC2 is 4th there, it kinda reflects the twitch numbers honestly. LoL in the lead, SC2 not that far behind. But really, this shouldn't be that surprising. Dota-style games are really trending right now and they're WAY easier to pick up and play than SC2. So what if it's not going to be the biggest game in e-sports, if we keep having what we have right now, we should be fine (:
When the game starts to pick up a bit and we really get a lot of iconic people (like Mvp, but he's pretty much alone right now), when the level of play gets even higher, when there are going to be people who try a lot of crazy strategies all the time.. there's hope things will improve even more!

Good news! I'm not sure I like the name 'Green Wings' much though
So they also decided to get two whole LoL squads? Kinda makes it sound like that's what they are most interested in. Not that I know anything at all about how LoL teams work.. Oh wells, money for e-sports is money well spent Hope that this means TY and Argo will now have the backing they need to grow into the beasts they should be.

Do we know how long Jaedongs contract is with EG, I have a feeling it is like November sometime? I really would like to see him at Dreamhack winter, and if he is on EG still then I feel quite sure he will go. If he is on a KeSPa team again by that time I would not be as confident. Imagine Jaedongs autograph on my HotS gamebox!

I just realize it now too, but in fact i think it's quite hard to notice this if you don't pay close attention to it. There is a famous supermarket in france, and most people don't know that the C of Carrefour is in it.

EG is a real team though. ._. I think Alex has made great strides to make them competitive with all the other crap (i.e. streaming exposure and participating in many events). Would the Jin Air team benefit from having JD back? Surely. Remember all the hype when T8 was first formed? Several people were saying, oh shit. Jaedong actually has a good support cast for once! T8 hwaiting and look what happened. lol It wasn't half as bad as the EG-TL hype train because fewer eyes took notice but oh man was there ever hype when Jaedong, Sea, BaBy, Tyson, Jaehoon and Terminator were banding together. We all know how that turned out. Pretty identical if you ask me.

So looks like we have our first new team. Who's the 2nd? or is it just the "two lol teams" which are new? Guessing new sponsors for STX? I had my hopes for LG-IM/MVP joining PL
