http://en.intelextrememasters.com/nyc-vs-shanghai/

For the fourth year running the Intel Extreme Masters will feature StarCraft® II: Heart of the Swarm™ as one of our main titles. Our season will kick off in Shanghai, China on July 25-28, making history as the first World Championship Series Tier 1 event to take place in Asia.

Intel Extreme Masters Shanghai will also be the first major international StarCraft II event in China in 2013. Our last event in Guangzhou in 2011 was filled with nail-biting matches, culminating with American Zerg player Greg “IdrA” Fields overcoming his adversary Samuli “elfi” Sihvonen to take first at the event.

This season’s event will have $25,000 in prize money and 750 WCS ranking points for the players. As such, we've modified our tournament format to incorporate the global and regional WCS rankings.

The online qualifiers will take place in two stages: the first stage being an open sign up and the second stage with applicants from the WCS ranking seeded into the bracket. There will be three qualifiers with two players from Europe, two players from North and South America and four players from Asia and Oceania. The eight qualified players will receive a fully paid trip to Shanghai. Regional qualifiers will ensure we have a diverse spectrum of talent from all over the globe.

The main event will take place over three stages. The first stage will spotlight the local and international StarCraft II talent with two brackets of eight competing for four spots in the second stage. The top four of the first stage will join the eight players from the online qualifiers as well as the top four applicants from the WCS ranking. These 16 players will then play in a group stage, battling fiercely to advance to the 8 man playoffs.

Qualifiers dates:

The Americas: Tuesday June 25th + Wednesday June 26th

Europe: Saturday June 29th + Sunday June 30th

Asia: To be determined

So many advantages for highly ranked WCS players... which increases their chances to get more WCS points...

EDIT: Oh, and are the regions for the online qualifiers the same as WCS regions now? I mean WCS America Koreans would have an advantage in the Korean qualifiers just because they participate in another WCS region.

EDIT2: Nevermind, just read the asterisk in the second picture. So WCS America Koreans have it much easier to qualify in the Korean qualifiers.

I really hope we see a lot of Koreans go over for the WCS points.

Does Asia + Oceania refers to the South East Asia region and not including China/Taiwan (which is the Host region, right?) Or does it.

That was the most objective way we have found to deal with a potential overflow of candidates to play. Also, Tier 1 and Tier 2 WCS points mostly help players who already have a decent number of them from WCS.

EU Qualifiers during MLG. I guess that means Naniwa, Sase, Thorzain and Grubby amongst whoever else from EU is going to mlg won't be trying to qualify . I know sometimes overlap can't be avoided but this still seems poorly timed

In between our announcement times (things have to run through approval processes, etc.), visa deadlines, HSC4 and other things, those qualifiers were the best times we were able to come up with.

A top player can still fly in and play at the event the same way they're doing it for MLG.

Ahh, sounds like you did what you could. It should still be an interesting event regardless. Thanks for being so quick and open with the response.

Not sure about invites being based on WCS points... Rich get richer, poor get poorer? But I guess it's more objective at least... Should be interesting to see who gets through.

Cheers on the region restrictions!

I don't understand why WCS players should have any advantage. In fact I don't really understand the qualifying format while I loved the old one.

I can't say I understand the format, and I'm someone who usually has no issue understanding complex formats.
