Hello,

My name is Cody Conners, and I'm the General Manager of Evil Geniuses. I'm excited to announce that today we'll be adding Libo “(T)Xenocider” Chang to our Starcraft 2 division.

Sometime last year I read a thread on Reddit about a fifteen year old kid taking games off our players in smaller events and on the ladder. While it wasn't exactly the criteria that makes me call Alex and insist that he start to draft up a contract, I remembered thinking that it was impressive that someone so young could be competitive on that level. As time went on I'd continue to see his name from time to time. He'd post a replay pack and it would get a decent amount of attention or someone would recommend his stream noting that he was an underrated player and that Terran players should tune in.

At some point in time Libo wrote Alex Garfield (our CEO) an email letting him know that he wanted to play for Evil Geniuses. We discussed it internally and decided that it wasn't the right fit at the time. A few months later Libo wandered up to me at an MLG and asked if he could speak to Alex. Alex wasn't at the event, but I was impressed with Libo’s persistence and suggested to him that he send us another email in a month.

Alex beat him to the punch and reached out to him via a private message on Reddit. While nothing formal nor official came from their conversations there, it allowed Libo and our company to better understand one another's goals. Shortly after Heart of the Swarm's release Libo reached back out to us, and then he reached back out us again, and again. At no point did it ever get annoying, because Libo was consistently getting better as a player and with each and every correspondence we would grow more and more fond of the idea of adding him to our roster. Eventually we decided that this was a relationship we could make work, and we contracted him on a private, training-only basis with the understanding that if he continued to grow as a player, he could eventually find himself on our official squad. He did continue to grow as a player, and now here we are.

We, as an organization, have historically been criticized for not fostering up and coming talent with our StarCraft 2 division. In our opinion, this is often over-exaggerated, but it’s still something that we know we need to work on. While it's thrilling to have a roster filled with superstars and legends, we understand that it's important to invest it talent that is growing and will continue to grow.

If we look back on 2012 I feel like it's safe to say that we put together a stable of players whose fame and stardom eclipsed almost every other team in the world. We grabbed ThorZaIN, we grabbed Stephano, and we grabbed Jaedong. Nestled in there we snagged the up-and-coming North American Suppy. Suppy wasn't a typical EG pickup, but he's since become one of our most consistently highest placing players. Suppy is now someone that I cannot imagine being on another team.

I'm optimistic that with the right support Libo will grow as a player, and that we as a team will benefit from having him on board.

Welcome to the team, Libo.

And thats how he's going to DreamHack. Also, good on EG for picking up another player that isn't like #1 in the world at the time.

Nice. EG supporting the local boys. I also love the story about the kid just asking Alex to play for EG. That takes a lot of brass and its great a kid so young could do it so professionally.

There's a lesson here: if you want to be on EG, just keep on bugging them about picking you up.

Joking aside: gl to Xenocider, use your chance!

That was a neat little story, shows good initiative from Xeno's side as well, which was obviously a big factor in the final decision to draft him. This is a pretty bold move for a company like EG, there'll be a lot more scrutiny on them than if a smaller team like say WW had signed him. Suppy has proved to be an excellent catch so I'm looking forward to seeing how this works out. More Terrans is always good too.

really weird pickup at such a young age since his parents will still have such a large influence on his decisions. also weird considering how unknown he is as opposed to when suppy joined and he had such a large fanbase.

either way congratz!

wat

How on earth is that an extremely poor choice? At worst it's a very small failed investment, at best it's a genius move, the risk is minimal and the reward could be anywhere from nothing to everything.

I don't see how you got to your opinion on the signing.

How on earth is that an extremely poor choice? At worst it's a very small failed investment, at best it's a genius move, the risk is minimal and the reward could be anywhere from nothing to everything.

I don't see how you got to your opinion on the signing.

There is already a reward in how this will help shine a positive light on EG. This will be an effective marketing move as long as Xenocider doesn't do anything too outrageous to damage the EG brand, which initially appears unlikely from the many interactions I've seen him have on player streams.

Yeah, let's give out the EG-Tag to any GM-player, because it is supercheap (well, they get just the tag, no money involved, ezpz) and may be a geniusmove, because the next ST_Life might be between those players!

Adding random players may in fact damage your brand... And xenocider is pretty much that, even at american level (which is already quite low) he is meaningless.
If they wanted to do smth good, they could have also given the money to the red cross... Would have been better PR.

I swear whenever EG picks up an established player people go "Rofl classic EG can't get talent so they buy it" then when EG picks up an up and comer like xenocider people go "Wow EG why are you wasting money on nobodies".

After missing out on DuranDuran this is still a really nice pick up. They needed another Terran on the team.
Nice to see them get a young up and coming American. His name is recognizable (how could you not recognize it) but he doesn't have results. Hopefully this helps him become a stronger player.

Seemed to have an attitude but, he is young so hopefully he does a lot of growing up with EG also.

Wow, this is amazing for Xeno!

I hope he doesn't let it get to his head like Wax said. Also hope to see Xeno dominate some tournies now! He definitely has the potential.

That's more of a recent trend and in my book they still haven't flourished with players that wreak of potential. I still see Suppy making small mistakes and if he corrected those. He would be a much better player than he is right now. It's a shame because I said something similar for guy's like Illusion yet I'm still waiting for him to deliver.

Congrats to both parties! Hopefully Xenocider turns out to be as awesome a pickup as Suppy did, and hopefully he shows as much growth and dedication after getting signed.

I really like that EG is still trying to grab up-and-comers along with the established stars. The recruiting approach of, "You deserve to be on our team. Welcome to EG," is a fine way to go about recruiting big time competitors, but I think the opposite mentality of "Welcome to EG. Now prove that you deserve to be on our team," probably ultimately develops a stronger roster of players.

EG CURSE - Newly Joined TOP players who already have reached their limits and had no emotional stimulus to prove themselves anymore. They got best conditions, best salaries additional to already existing respect and achievements - there is no way uphill, only downhill.
Congratulations EG with new (and IMO best) pick - Xenocider. He still have long way to go to prove himself and maybe one day he will become new EG trademark especially now when Idra left.

What race does this Xenocider guy play ?

Guess he probably is a Zerg though, Though EG if anything (IMO) - EG is lacking Protosses ATM..

But can't say that that's a bad pickup cause - every team needs some young blood as well as in this particular circumstance - Stephano gonna retire in a few months so..

from the first moments of watching xenocider's stream back maybe a year ago, i was under the impression that he is a genius (no pun intended) at starcraft2. his way of thinking and grasp of the game made me an immediate fan. and apparently EG was impressed by how fast he kept improving.

all you haters here... go f*** yourself.

How on earth is that an extremely poor choice? At worst it's a very small failed investment, at best it's a genius move, the risk is minimal and the reward could be anywhere from nothing to everything.

I don't see how you got to your opinion on the signing.

When Mouz signed Heromarine, he was a similar case. a high masters/low GM player who was still meaningless. Talent does devop under the right conditions though and today he is at least a top10 Terran in EU (probably even between rank 5-8)

Awesome read! I'm pretty happy for both Libo and EG. That kid is pretty amazing seeing how he is only 15 and can compete with best of the best among the foreigner, and be able to compete with Koreans, while based at his own home. :D GL to EG and best of luck to Xenocider! I expect great things to come out of both for the remaining year! :D

EG are learning! I'm very happy for them and for Xenocider who seems like a very promising and ambitious young player.

Wonderful story of drive, passion, persistence and determination.

Also kudos to EG for stepping up to the mark with both the private training and the offer. Very good to see, thumbs up !

This is soo awesome too see. Someone at the age of 15 years old soo good in starcraft game that a professional team would come out and pick him up. He has such a bright future! Good luck to Xenocider and as well as Evil Geniuses!

Nice move by EG, only picking up players that were putting out top results was definitely criticism that I had for them.

This is quite a gem of a pickup for EG. Anyone who has ever seen his stream will tell you it one of the best streams out there. It has high level play with very informative commentary. And the best part? He has repeatedly said that he ENJOYS doing it. His quality stream is the result of his enthusiasm. Hell, he doesn't even play commercials just so he can have more time to speak to his audience.

Young, motivated, enthusiastic, and already very skilled. I look forward to seeing him compete under the EG banner.

I did feel this way about EG so it's really nice to see them making some real effort to develop growing talent, especially since Xenocider seems so attracted to EG, let's see if finally getting signed by EG will propel him even higher.

With some of their giants stepping down, it's nice to see EG is going the route of growing players that are skilled, rather than grabbing developed players with large title wins. Granted they have already done this with Suppy, so it's not new; though it's nice to see this was not a one off thing and rather something they will continue to do.

Grats to Xenocider. That's a really impressive achievement for someone so young.

I'm excited to see what will become of someone so young raised to be a professional Starcraft player. We see players all the time in Korea who are 16 or 17 playing in GSL, but it's a very rare occurrence in the States for a professional on such a big team to be under the age of 18.

I'm excited to see this kid's games and, deep down, I'm hoping that his early start will lead to a player on the same level as someone such as Flash or Jaedong.

Good luck!

Honestly that is not a joke, I think it is a pretty valuable lesson. That is a pretty similar story to how I got my job. Building a decent resume, cold contacting the relevant people, then following up in a timely but not bothersome manner is pretty freaking impressive for a teenager.

Grats to him, and I hope it works out for both parties.

If he can follow the same success Suppy has managed(but that may be a bit difficult), that would be great.

One Terran I wish EG would have signed was Illusion before he went to mouz. I always held Illusion in high regard since he's quite young, and a really good foreigner Terran.

I'm not necessarily a fan of a terran pickup. You need to practice 10+ hours a day doing standard builds against high level opponents to have a shot at competing with the Koreans. zerg on the other hand is not as mechanically demanding. As such, foreign zergs have seen more success than any other race. We'll see if Xeno can prove me wrong.

Unless Xenocider becomes a PR nightmare (in which case EG would just cut him from the team), his pickup is a good investment. Maybe he won't win a WCS anytime soon, but EG and the community never placed those expectations on him either like they do with a player like Stephano, and they almost certainly aren't paying him a hefty salary either.

EG also gets credit from the community for supporting the local NA scene and promoting up and coming players this way, and the positive goodwill from the community could be significant towards EG's overall image.

The case of Xenocider may be the second Suppy case if things go as planned. For such a young kid still developing his skills, he manages to play with the best on the NA server and has enormous potential to grow as a player still. Similar to Suppy, who was just another NA player who no one expected to grow much, EG developed his talent and let him become a real contender for best NA player. Instead of signing big names like Jaedong and Stephano, EG knows Xenocider is a good investment, because he either performs well, or doesn't perform as well as believed, but still manages to maintain a good image with EG for a relatively low cost to the brand.

strange pickup, probably close to free though.

Huh? That means he still got a lot more years to stay in the competitive scene if he wish so.
Just look at how many pro are considering retirement after around 20 because of going to college.

And why is age not relevant?
Do you see any 60 yo players? Lol

how many girl players do you see?

i dont think it has to do with age, gender or race, so much as the amount of people who try to play to become good.

basically, there (likely) aren't very many 60 year olds trying to go pro at a video game !

Wow, I wasn't expecting this. It's nice to see EG picking up lesser known players to help them facilitate their careers.

Sick pick up, definitely one of the best players in HSL. Should be a good storyline this summer for the HSL vs CSL showmatch, with Xenocider and Suppy being the two best players of their respective leagues. :D

i must admit, i have not heard of him yet – i don't mean that in a harmful way, i sadly just don't have the time to catch up on anything but the biggest tournaments. but reading the OP has made me really curious – sounds like a promising pickup! i want to see him play, so i have added him to my fav streams

Ouch, someone wants to be hit by the EG curse... or, nvm, since WCS the EG curse seems almost broken. Remember my words!

Here's an edit, though: Great to support up-and-coming players! Kudos, EG! y3

Techniques, hellokitty & Kane,

Young kids can be molded. If I'm looking for fresh meat I'm looking right at the 13-15 bracket tops. This is what we did in BW. The younger they are the more they can learn and the kid has a good foundation.

Kind of hard to be cursed when he actually hasn't really done anything yet no? EG were known for taking players who arguably peaked out in the past. Considering LucifroN and his brother VortiX decided to decline Alex's offer. I would think you would want to make your team look a little more appealing than just the money. You can see Alex wants to get away from the stigma that comes attached to the EG brand when he established the Eurobrand with the Alliance where NTH are running over the DotA2 scene and let loose NaNiwa. Not a bad idea if I say so myself. So what's the next step? Fostering young talent with a lot of potential and providing them a place to exceed expectations. This is where Superiorwolf (a.k.a. Suppy) and guys like Xeno come in. They want to be more than a place go when they're set to retire or their best days are behind them, so save the EG Curse for someone else Mister.

The modern EG-curse is much simpler then the old one.
- player that gets some attention, is developing, doing well
- joins EG
- starts streaming 24/7, because hell, this is way more fun (and financially more efficient then trying to find some whole day $50 prizemoney tourney, that does not have 3 koreans in it, and then losing in round 7 after wasting a full day to another player that had the same thoughtprocess coming into the tournament)
- doesn't develop at all, gets worse again and settles at some decent level (still good enough to do funny things on stream, but far away from being competitive)
- doesn't care about that, since streaming gives enough money without any success in tourneys

And well, when you look at the thread, you see that most of the community is willing to support this once again.
STREAM MORE!!! ALL WATCH HIS STREAM!!! GUYS SO GOOD WHEN STREAMING!!!
but let's all pretend that this is the best way to practice, because he is explaining so much of his thoughtprocess while streaming! Pretty sure professional racedrivers also practice by teaching their children how to ride a bike.

You forgot the most recent developments with EG:

Revival takes second place in WCS NA vs LiquidHero
Stephano takes second place in WCS EU vs MVP.
Demuslim makes it through all of the qualifiers for Challenger, through Challenger and into Premier League for NA. All while stream quite often.
Thorzain qualifiers for premier league for EU.

But I am sure the argument that streaming to much still hold water. Clearly they aren't putting up any results beyond taking second place in two regions.

Great news. EG is doing the right thing. We need way more support for foreign, especially American talents in order to maintain an entertaining scene.

Cool pick for EG, Love seeing them trying to pick up lower-level players.

Effectively red-shirting and grooming this kid.

Other teams need to take notice.

I'm starting to like EG more and more these days. Stephano and Idra leaving the team and finally a terran pickup who hasn't even established himself yet in the top level.

I really hope he gets his chance and is not just a marketing pick up that will end up just streaming because he is not send to tournaments.
