Greetings TL!
Update:
https://www.facebook.com/thatglaiveguy https://twitter.com/GGlaive
For mods: I´m not sure if this is the right place but from what I gathered from the "advertisement/self-promotion" guidelines, I think a thread like this is okay? The goal is simply to announce my return and hopefully earn the status of a featured streamer in time. If not just move/remove the thread
I´m known as Glaive (or for any oldschool fan, Beef-on-a-stick) and I´m a former semi-professional gamer.
For a long time I´ve been frequenting this site, it´s about time I stepped out of the shadows and introduced myself for those who don´t know me from the Warcraft3 days!
Grandmastering the Ladder is what I´m going to call my little corner of the internet where I stream and record my journey toward Grandmaster-level Terran play. Working full time at becoming a profesional gamer once again. I should perhaps first mention that I am currently residing in the top 8 of a high masters league on the european servers.
Stream status: Break time! http://www.twitch.tv/GGlaive
Edit: After recieving a couple of emails from amazingly supportive liquidians out there I feel a bit silly that I left out the fact that I´m currently sponsorless. I´m currently negotiating with a few different teams that have been able to offer LAN spons (entry fees, travel expenses and hotels). But as of today nothing is finalized, so I encourage any serious organization who is looking to recruit new players to send me an email (alexander.itg@gmail.com). I don´t require any sort of high salary at all as I live a pretty minimalistic lifestyle at the moment (and obviously have yet to actually prove myself in leagues/tournaments) However, as my savings are quickly running dry I will need to cover rent and such in order to be able to continue practicing full time.
Maintenance note:
I´ve finally started putting together this thread, just a little place to call home. Right now it´s just a horribly rough draft. Not even half of what I´m thinking it will be upon completion. But knowing myself, things well move along at a 10 times faster pace if I actually put this up there and start adding as I go along instead of piecing bits and pieces together in one long sitting that surely will get procrastinated even further.
Will be updated with:
*Website *Stream info (currently changing from Xsplit to to probably OBS since the quality on Xsplit is super shitty and capped at 480) Grabbed the link to a recent session from the archives for anyone who curious and the stream is currently offline: http://www.twitch.tv/gglaive/b/405618504

I only completed my new PC a month ago so I´m still feeling pretty rusty but things are progressing nicely and it´s becoming more and more obvious to me what I need to work on in my play.
For now I´m just going to start writing on a good and thorough introduction of myself. Sort of just about my life from the perspective of a competitive mind, for anyone who may be interested in getting to know me now, or more likely in the future when I start making a bit of a splash. It´s something I´ve been wanting to get started on writing on for quite a while, too.
Basically I´m looking for a place to post my thoughts and progress, update when I´m streaming, where I do some commentary and analysis during and inbetween games. If I´m lucky maybe even start a little following. You guys have proven to be extremely loyal supporters of players who have proven themselves worthy, I can only hope to count myself among them some day soon.
Long ass introduction, (rough, draft) part 1:
My IRL handle is Alexander Angleby, also known as Glaive. I hail from the great gaming nation of Swedenland, home to many true vikings that some of you are probably very familiar with. Back in 2004-2008 I was still in school but traveled quite a bit competing in Wc3, as what I suppose you would call a semi-professional gamer. When I was at my peak, before I was forced into retirement due to medical issues I was competing at roughly this level: http://classic.battle.net/tournaments/season4/brackets.shtml
From this point forward, however, as I am dedicating myself to gaming full time; I will be refering to myself not as a student, not as on sick-leave, but as an aspiring actual progamer. I have been quietly practicing for myself without having any real presence on the scene for a very long time so I´m just trying to get the ball rolling here. This site has been among the first I go to when I first sit down at a computer, even before facebook, for many years.
Gaming community websites was where I spent insanely huge chunks of my teenage years. You, and everyone else who has read and posted on these sites have taught me so much about life, and about communication. I can honestly say that you, in an immensely positive way, have shaped and influenced the very core of what identifies me as a person.
Sites like TL and WCReplays is where I learned everything I needed to know to become a professional gamer. Throughout the years it´s been a place where I could go and always find great comfort and support whenever I needed it. The life of a gamer is not easy at times, this community, especially a few of you who became teammates and close friends, kept me focused and motivated when I otherwise would have given up.
I could not think of a better place to return to for this, my rise from the ashes.
I have reached a skill-level in HotS where I now feel that the vast majority of players can at least learn something from watching my games, even if you´re already in Masters. Maybe especially if you´re in that mid to high masters and you are kinda stuck trying to get to that next level. I have great experience in making that jump from casual to more serious and professional in simply how you approach the game, attacking that long list of things you know that you need to work on, approaching things the right way and in the right order to make the time we put into ladder as efficient as possible.
So, here I am "making the switch", even though I´ve explored HotS enough to feel very confident that Starcraft 2 is a great game for me to compete in. I am very eager to see if me in my best shape can compete with the youngsters of today, or if the bar is simply too high now with the huge influx of player flooding the competative scene. Can I achieve some of my goals in getting to a point where we can make money off of this and maybe even get to travel to some tournaments? That would make me very happy and give my life a sense of purpose.
I have come to terms with the fact that I am a very sick individual, and unless some medical breakthrough is made, will be for the rest of my life. This leaves me with very few realistic options of "living life" while I´m still relatively young. But pitting my brain against some elses, E-sports, Blizzard RTS games, these are my passions. And coincidentally these are all things you can explore in front of your computer. This is pretty much ideal for obvious reasons, it´s very difficult for me to maintain a regual office hours schedule with my condition. As the sort of... average level of well-being has drastically decreased over the last year. Due to the worst physical condition I´ve been in a long time, a combination of the disease acting up, me not exercising, and lately a pretty severe depression - something that has been just completely new for me to deal with. So this truly is a climb from rock bottom.
Worst case scenario? Even if I manage to realize none of my dreams I am still confident that Starcraft will provide exactly the type of mental exercise and training in discipline that I desperate need in order to get life back on track. With the future so uncertain as to when the next surgery will take place, going back to school is not really an option. I mean, it is but I´ve been down that road before. It leads to no actual credit due to periods in the hospital of varying lengths that often coincide with exams and random deadlines. So basically the past few attempts to pick up my studies have been just a huge waste of time that is very demoralizing. Another such setback is definitely not what I need in my life right now. I need something that gives back as much as I give, no more and certainly no less.
I am a firm believer in the philosophy that Artosis share with me, that playing Starcraft actually makes you a better person. So this is my new life plan, hopefully I can make a living off of this, because anyone that is truly happy will tell you that they got there by doing what they loved...
I may or may not be undergoing surgery in the upcoming weeks so I´m not quite sure when the next big update will come but definitely soon!
Do you think that watching something like this may interest you? If so let me know in a comment below! Feedback will be most appreciated. Demuslim, for instance, is kind of doing what I´m trying to do, obviously a lot better, but I´m actually catching up a lot quicker than I expected and pretty soon I´m going to feel confident asking some old friends who are actually already doing this for a living for practice. But since I don´t want to waste let´s say Grubby´s time by just getting completely slaughtered, I still have some serious practice ahead of me. Let me know if you have any fun ideas for the "show", I´m going to try to be as interactive with the viewers as possible. I´m considering announcing a fun little official launch night for my stream, mainly to boost my own motivation not to just sit quietly. I want to practice commentating (obviously not casting in any way since we are trying aiming for perfection in our play) and doing post-game analyses.
To be continued guys. Thanks for reading!

Hi Glaive. Good luck in your commitment to your game. No matter what results you achieve, the road, the journey you take is the goal itself. Be happy in knowing that and you can never fail.

Never followed the W3 scene that closely but as a long time esports follower I do recall your name. All the best for the future and will be checking out your stream.

Break over, more games inc!
|
How long have you been playing SC2 and how many games? GL I always like to see if RTS skills transfer between games with the top players!
|
I played quite a bit during the WoL beta, but I didn´t have a computer that could run Sc2 without serious FPS drops as soon as the supply counts went above 100. In the following two years I focused on my university and getting my health situation under control. It took me forever to save enough money for a computer good enough to stream and such, I completed it shortly after HotS was released and have been playing actively since. I´ve played about 500 games of HotS so far, 100 or so of those being toss/zerg just to get a better feel for the other races.
Houston, we have a problem.

Kinda cool. He's in my division. :D good luck to you!

I´ve been getting this question a lot lately so I might just include that whole crazy journey in this thread when I get around to it, I just have to find the documents from my earlier accounts and translate them. I´ve always been very open about any and all things related to my condition, so no questions are too personal when it comes to that. I can however imagine that it´s a bit "TMI" for some, so I´ll be putting all disease-related stuff in spoiler tags.
In the mean time, short answer: A particularly nasty case of Crohn´s disease with frequent lung and heart complications. So far I´ve undergone over a dozen surgeries, amputation of the large intestine among others. I´ve actually lost count at this point. Feel free to PM and I´ll answer any questions you may have
Here´s a copy-paste from a PM to another member from earlier today if you´re interested in few more details: + Show Spoiler +In the spring of 2007 I started losing a lot of weight, my stomach was completely messed up to the point where most people don´t enjoy hearing the gruesome details. But since I was graduating high school in only a few months I wasn´t gonna let that get in the way... Like an idiot I kept on practicing for the European championships in Wc3 and finishing the last of my crucial assignments to bump up a few grades to A´s. It was only later that I learned that stress is the most common factor after inheriting the condition from your parents (none of whom are sick). Placing 4th at Dreamhack was the last thing I did before I was hospitalized, at this point my large intestine was at the brink of bursting (Complications? Sepsis and painful death). Young and naive, having never heard of inflammatory bowel dieases I expected a prescription and then being sent on my way.
Instead I was quickly diagnosed with Crohn´s disease (actually I was first diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis, but when the disease kept progressing in ways that didn´t make sense the diagnosis was changed) after 4 weeks in the hospital I had gone from my previous normal weight of 110 kg (at 203 cm) to 76 kg (appearance of an auschwitz victim), not responding to any treatments currently available. They were forced to amputate my large intestine and fit me with an ileostomy. After the surgery I made a swift recovery, started putting on weight again and could return to a somewhat normal life again after about 6 months. Unfortunately Crohn´s is a chronic illness, and it wasn´t done with me yet. I underwent several more surgeries in 2009-2010 (I´ve actually lost count at this point) but could eventually start my studies at university. Up until this point, in spite of semi-living at the hospital I was holding up ridiculously well mentally. In 2010 they performed a so called IRA surgery and regained the ability to go to the bathroom like a normal person - this was the best year of my life.
One day I woke up in the middle of the night, with the sensation of having swallowed glass. A quick ambulance ride and two emergency surgeries later, without knowing what hit me I woke up with a pouch on my stomach again. Suddenly the mental strength that had always been my saving grace was completely shattered. I was sicker than ever, unable to continue my studies, unable to hold down a regular job I spiraled into a depression. I´ve been trying to pick up the pieces of my life ever since. And for the first time in a very long time I´m actually feeling quite optimistic about the future, dare I even say it couldn´t possibly get any worse?
I´ve always been a competative person, competing in various different sports throughout my entire life. At one point I was actually the swedish national champion in chess, eventually my interest shifted toward gaming, Wc3. When I stopped competing alltogether is when shit started going downhill, it took me a long time to figure out what was missing in my life, but finally I realized how much my mind needs the competative aspects of life. Now that I´ve started playing Starcraft again my brain feels rejuvenated. I´m far from out of the woods yet but as I said, I feel like things might finally be looking up for a change!

I can´t remember if it was vs Soju or Remind but I surprised him with a 2 AoW hunt/glaive push, which is of course not surprising at all since it´s basically what I was known for. But I had snuck a couple of Wisps to the very first green camp he crept on Twisted Meadows, there I built 3 Ancient Protectors and did whatever I could to focus his attention elsewhere. When it came to beating Koreans on Soju´s level my weapon of choice was almost always my own unconventional strategies (in a way that actually worked at the pro level). But when freakin´everyone started using Panda first vs Human and even Glaive Throwers in Hunt mirror to some extent, meaning everyone was practicing against it, I was a very sad panda indeed :D
Edit: Ok, embarassing, I read Soju instead of suhO and went off on rant. I´m going to have to change my answer to a short and simple "no", then. If memory serves I´m pretty sure I never actually played suhO, the Chinese players started playing in WC3L/NGL looooooooong after the Koreans. And since SaSe would always beat me 2-1 for every major qualifier ever I missed out on a lot of opportunities to play the Chinese players offline.

Hi, I have a genuine question:
What is a semi-professional gamer? You have three types of gamers:
Hobby gamers - Gamers that don't make a living out of gaming, but play the game anyway. Competitive gamers - Gamers that are serious about improving and compete in tournaments, but barely make any money. Professional gamers - Gamers that make a living out of gaming, earning enough money to call it a full time job.
As per everything, unless you make (enough) money from what you do, it's not professional.

I don´t exactly agree with your definition of a "competitive gamer", you could not make a dime and still be a competitive gamer. You could also be playing full time (say you´re unmployed at the moment) and not be a professional gamer, simply a competitive one.
A semi-professional gamer would be someone who isn´t playing full time, but still travel, compete, is sponsored and make some money (salary or otherwise). But not making a living purely off of gaming.
Considering I was living at home at the time, still in high school, I was making waaaay more than "enough".
But I guess it´s pretty much synonymous with your definition of a "competitive gamer", just a little less broad of a term. I don´t like arguing semantics though, different communities often have different definitions for the same terms.

Important update:
Thank you so much again for all your support and kind words, every time I check back on this thread I find myself bursting with motivation to continue practicing at this ridiculous pace!
In other news, I´m starting to realize not everyone might appreciate me constantly bumping this thread with small updates regarding my career here and there. So I´ve finally gotten around to setting up a Twitter-account (how idiot of me not to have done this earlier...) for my so far small but amazingly loyal and supportive following! <3, no homo.
https://twitter.com/GGlaive
It almost seems greedy to ask for more, I can´t even offer cookies, but follow me anyway? :D
There you can expect more frequent updates about my progress in practice and any and all news regarding my career in general. While I´ll try to limit posting in this thread to only major news and conversing with all of you amazing people posting in this thread and sending me emails/PMs. I´ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of you better and sharing experiences and hardships in life. And I´m so glad I´ve managed to inspire some people with my struggles and ambitions, I have my own sources of inspiration (For instance Go)Space, may he rest in peace) and know how incredibly important they are for those who drew the short straw in the giant genetic lottery that is life. Sometimes just to find the strength to get up out of bed in the morning. One can only play the hand he´s dealt to the best of his ability, words I try to live by.

Not to mention the fact that while my micro is really strong, I´m still slipping embarassingly much on my macro. But the supply blocks are getting less horrible with each passing day.
Work on the stream is estimated to be completed within a week or two, I will officially by applying to become featured then. In the meantime I´m content closing the distance between me and Grandmaster a little bit every day, making it all the more worthy once it´s finally up there!

Omg! The God of micro is back! I still remeber how you carried your noname ally in 2on2 in WC3L!
Looking forward to follow you once again!

With you all the way buddy!!

Also: New Facebook page, sharing is caring! Blogging there until the site goes live!
https://www.facebook.com/thatglaiveguy
This just in! The domain of my website will be www.thatglaiveguy.com
As you can imagine, I thought long and hard about what to name the website. I wanted it to be meaningful. I wanted it to be easy to type the first few letters and have your browser fill in the rest, I wanted it to be easy to remember.
www.grandmasteringtheladder.com, just didn´t fullfil any of those criteria. So I thought back to my roots, to carefully chose the words that could potentially make or break this entire venture on a random whim. When I was almost involuntarily started competing.
It´s regular ordinary swedish story time! Back when I was primarily known as Beef-On-A-Stick, playing (while also climbing the ladder) for fun more than anything else there was this amazing group of people on the US.East servers that I used to hang out with on vent every day. One year in particular, 2004-2005, I´m turned my clock back 6 hours to match EST. Pretty sure I actually spoke more english than I did swedish in school/around home combined.
We formed a tight-knit little group who hung out on Skype, practiced Wc3, laughed and played Escape from Gay Heaven until our fingers bled. One of the guys who eventually joined the team that became Clan aKasha, was ThatTuaGuy, him and a few other people convinved me I should participate in an incup, apparently this Beef character blowing things up with completely random strategiest, often Glaive Throwers, had some skills. I needed a name to play on, without making it too complicated suddenly I was "ThatGlaiveGuy", no-name Swede. I got to the semis, I forget who I lost to but it was a good game vs someone who used to win a lot of those. Making me the top placing Swede on my first go. Hours later the Swedish team captain contacted me over IRC and before I knew it was on the squad and things quickly went on to offline competition after that.
For a long time I tried to get people to still call me Beef. gosugamers and the other large swedish community, Gamingeye would have none of it though, I´d become the smurf, I was (That)GlaiveGuy and it was final. But I guess it´s a decent enough story behind a nickname.

+ Show Spoiler + Alexander Böngrodden Angleby April 29 near Stockholm Mer goda nyheter i Grandmastering the Ladder, kamrater!
38Like · · Promote · Share
What do you think Björn, worth translating? It did get a sick amount of likes for being blogged on just my own wall haha.
This language thing is really kind of a puzzle. Obviously all content on my site will be readily available in english, but I´m not sure I want to give up writing in swedish alltogether, since it has such a completely (and in my opinion, more entertaining) voice. When my website goes live I might just add a "English/Swedish"-switch on the blog, with english being standard, and continue writing in both languages for many of my blog-followers who kinda tagged along for the journey when I announced I was going fulltime eSports. The blogs might differ just slightly in content, but the main difference will be in my personality. It´s a lot more relaxed, ironic and humoristic when I write in swedish and perhaps a little less formal/"professional", one might say, than my english.
I´ve already written 30 or so pages of varying content (ideas for the show and site, more introduction stuff, upcoming blog posts etc.) , so I think I´ll be churning out enough content to run two blogs side-by-side.

Oh look at that...ANOTHER terran player.

Hello again guys!
Edit: Should probably put this above the giant wall of text :D
"As token of my appreciation for all your love and support - and to give something of substance back to this amazing community - if anyone is interested in some free coaching, I´ll gladly set aside an hour here and there inbetween sessions. As for my coaching experience, it´s absolutely zilch in Starcraft 2, but I used to do regular coaching in Wc3 so I figure I wouldn´t be the worst coach in the world. I´ve been told I´m fairly pedagogic, no league restrictions. Comment/PM if you´re interested " _____________________________
The site is nearing completion, all the functionalities have been coded. Now it just needs some (probably a lot of) prettying up. The current "At least it looks like as website"-build looks something like this:
+ Show Spoiler +
Unfortunately neither me nor my Uni mate, who´s doing the hard coding, are very good at the whole aesthetic design aspect of things. So now that most of the coding is done, we´re kinda lost :D
Any spontaneous thoughts on the current layout? Feedback/critique?
If someone with experience with graphics/design happens to read this comment, we would love to hear your thoughts, maybe someone would even be willing to help out with the finishing touches? Can´t offer much in terms of compensation other than my undying gratitude and promise of future compensation once this bird is off the ground.
I´m also looking to do the same with my stream now that things are about to get serious, "pretty it up", that is. I did some searching and found some people who were offering to design stream overlays in the past. Haven´t heard back from anyone yet though so I thought I´d mention it. Maybe I get lucky
Send me a PM here or try Skype/Email: alexander.itg@gmail.com if you´re feeling charitable and want to help out with the above _____________________________
Ah, and with business out of the way..!
It´s been a blast having so many of you guys stopping by, checking on my progress and hanging out in the stream chat. It´s just that much more fun to keep grinding when you have a little back and forth going with the viewers. As I haven´t done any "marketing" yet, aside from this thread, most of my viewers are real life friends with little to no experience of competitive Starcraft. A few are in Bronze-Plat and so I´m trying to cover a lot of the basics for them while I´m streaming. Point being: There are no stupid questions - I thoroughly enjoy imparting what Terran wisdom I´ve gained thus far unto others. Now that the website is almost done I´m streaming 40 games a day again so I´ll be hard to miss
Could this possibly be the season that I make GM? It´s starting to realistically feel within my grasp with continued relentless practice. Even my macro, though still in need of improvement, is feeling relatively solid! Down to roughly one major supply block per game. New season Day 1 results:
+ Show Spoiler +
Only 1 loss so far that wasn´t a result of an all-in one way or the other, iirc. Suffered several really silly, even flat out laughable, losses toward the end of the day due to mental exhaustion, but everything is part of the training
I´m having so much more fun grinding out and eliminating the flaws in my play now that I have some company, so keep the questions coming guys and enjoy the show! <3 _____________________________
Edit: Oh right, I didn´t want to bump the thread with "just" this announcement earlier, so I´ll carpe diem and point to this blog entry:
