I was in choir for a long time and there are certain vowels that are just hard to make sound pretty. When you sing the word AIR, try using a different inital vowel to sing. You will hit the note better if you start singing "ih" (as in mitten(m[ih]tten)). As you finish holding the note out, morph "ih" into "air" and you will hit the note a lot better.
