GOMTV (Executive Director In-sik Bae) has announced the relocation of the GOMTV Mokdong Studio located in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul to the Mirae Asset Life Insurance Building located near Samseong Station in Gangnam-gu, which will occur in mid-March. As a result the GOMTV studio will be renamed from GOMTV Mokdong Studio to GOMTV Gangnam Studio.

A GOMTV spokesman stated that GOMTV has been looking for a new studio for the past year, evaluating many candidate locations for the ability to accommodate a wider variety of eSports [T/N: other games in addition to StarCraft] and more visitors; the Gangnam Studio location was chosen for its accessibility and proximity to hospitality facilities.

With the opening of the GOMTV Gangnam Studio all studio broadcasting equipment will be switched to HD [T/N: 1080p perhaps?], and will provide a more spacious spectating space for visitors to the studio. Also, it is expected that foreign visitors will find the new studio a more convenient facility to spectate eSports due to COEX and other hotels in the vicinity.

Ju-yang Oh, the GOMTV Broadcast Division Manager, stated that "We feel freshly motivated with the upcoming move from the GOMTV Mokdong Studio to the GOMTV Gangnam Studio in March. We have decided to move to the GOMTV Gangnam Studio after a long period of due diligence and consideration, in order to stage a wider variety of eSports tournaments and to provide a better experience to eSports fans. With the relocation we will not only improve the overall standard of eSports tournament operation but also do our utmost to make the new studio a place where we can enjoy eSports with the global community. We would like to most sincerely thank all the Korean and foreign fans who have visited the GOMTV Mokdong Studio to date, and we look forward to seeing you at the new GOMTV Gangnam Studio."

The GOMTV Gangnam Studio's address is 2nd Floor, Mirae Asset Life Insurance Building, 997-4 Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul; it is 3 minutes walking distance from Exit 1 of Samseong Station on Seoul Subway Line 2.

To mark the upcoming studio relocation GOMTV plans to engage in promotion and stage events in order to inform foreign and Korean fans of the new studio location.

Further details of the GOMTV Gangnam Studio can be found on the GOMTV home page (http://kr.gomtv.net), GSL Facebook page (www.facebook.com/gogsl) and the GSL Twitter account (www.twitter.com/gogsl). Also you may subscribe to a wide variety of GSL-related information through the GSL Blog (http://enjoygsl.blog.me).

tl;dr:
1) GOMTV Studio moving from Mokdong to Gangnam in mid-March (likely synchronised to the new GSL and GSTL season)
2) The place is bigger and more accessible (3 minutes on foot from subway station, cf. 10 minutes at Mokdong)
3) Full HD is a possibility in future (not made clear but a reasonable deduction can be made)
4) Expect GOMTV to hold tournaments in different games in future
5) GOMTV will be holding promotional events to mark the move

This is good news, I always heard about how their Mokdong studio was pretty out of the way and kind of a hassle to get to.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchhiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

GOM must be making some good money if they can relocate to Gangnam. That place is crazy expensive to get property.

The implication is indeed additional games, of which LoL is one.

So awesome . . .

Really though, I'm very excited to see what the new layout will be! Hopefully they switch it up from their current setup. Not that it's bad, It would just be fun to see a change in scenery =)

Yay! If they need a bigger studio it's because their flagship, GSL, is packed. I've noticed there often aren't many or any open seats. This is good.

While it may be sad that GOMTV has basically just announced a LoL tournament, Gangnam is crazy expensive for space, so they must be doing really well financially on just starcraft, and that is good news for our Korean scene!

Why is that sad? Its a decent enough game. Its popular. Esports is Esports.
Just because CBS shows baseball, doesnt mean it stops showing football. ukwim?

Theres only so many hours they can do SC2 in a day/week/month within their tournament setups. Theres open days they could be doing other games.

I never understand the hatred toward league, by this community. You should support ALL esports, and honestly, league of legends is going to be the "bannerman" of breaking esports into the regular household, I believe.

You're wrongfully assuming that everyone here cares about " esports " and wants to see it become something everyone watches, some people just like starcraft.

Relax. He doesn't like league, and he doesn't have to. I don't like it either, but that's it. The sadness is probably similar to how OGN only does proleague half their matches, instead of fulltime. I don't wish LoL to roll over and die, but I feel uncomfortable not knowing whether LoL is going to take priority in the long run.
Refer to my post.

I hope the secondary game they're implying new involvement in is DOTA, not Lolz.

While i don't get the LoL hate saying stuff like "You should support it for Esport" is such a annoying way to say it.
I don't mind it but i aint gonne watch it to support it.

So I guess I will have to go for a hotel in Gangnam again.

I must say though that the Mokdong studio as part of a local highschool had a certain charme to it. Oh well.

Wonder if they'll keep Mokdong as well to have two studios at their disposal.

Sorry, but you have to crazy to think that they'd pick up Dota over LoL. Neither or both maybe, but certainly not just Dota. LoL is much more massive in korea.

Very unlikely in Korea. I hope w/e game they add they are incredibly successful with, as long as it doesn't interfere with GSL I don't know why it would be a worry to anyone.

Wait.. If they don't have HD equipment right now, then how are they broadcasting in HD? Is that why Twitch is only 360P and 540P?

And who's gonna take a guess what game they will have? I'm guessing League of Legends because you know, Starcraft is dying.

Any tournament officially run by Riot has free HD. Partner tournaments are allowed to charge for their streams but I think 480p is a minimum for free content.

That would be amazing., but I highly doubt it. It would be hilarious if they picked up CS:GO or some other random game.

CS:GO ain't random though... I miss the good ol days of CS 1.6, even though I suck at the game.

They're not. Even IPL5 had interlacing issues because it seems the gear they have involves some crazy upscaling and conversion of some sort. I would think that they just flat out don't have the latest HD gear, which I suppose makes sense. If I'm not mistake, Korea still uses a lot of 4:3 TVs, so things haven't had any reason to really move at a great pace in that regeard.

I thought IPL5 used the cameras and everything that IPL, the convention centre or wherever supplied. I didn't know GOM moved the studio over for IPL...

I'm surprised to hear you say Korea still uses 4:3 TV when they mass produce widescreen, and it's featured in Kdramas and everything. I assume you mean that the TV broadcasts are in 4:3 resolution? Because I think it's like that everywhere... Most of the channels here are in 4:3, only HD are well, HD, and they cost extra money.

Otherwise, most people don't throw out a TV unless it's broken, so won't be surprising if most average Koreans have a 4:3 TV, but I'm not sure how that relates to the HD video cameras and such.

I wonder if GOM will move their studio everytime there is a K-Pop song that achieves international domination.

2012-12-14 was the finals for season 5, 2012.
There was a MONTH before code s started again. That is a month they could be making revenue from streaming a different game. Esp if that game is LOL considering how huge it is. Currently 45k watching LoL. 11k watching sc2. While GSL is on.

At the end of the day, its a world driven by money. Theres potential money to be made doing league also. They could even do league before/after or at the same time as sc2, depending on their capacity within the building.

Lastly, theres a lot of empty Sat/Sun/Mon days that could be another game, as well.

Companies can be tricky to get more viewership "numbers" to show sponsors.

IE: Say 10k are watching GOMTV, and 3k are watching Twitch TV. They could code the gomtv to count as twitch, as well, thus making twitch show 13k. When u go to a sponsor, you say "Hey, i had 13k on twitch, 10k on our player. Thats 23k" When really, its not.

MLG IPL and OGN all have their pay for HD streams (I live in Korea though so I get OGN on the tele :D)

The LCS is done in a similar manner too. Free with a subscription service. Overall, they are pretty similar

This is good for GSL. When I visited I was surprised at how local it felt for something so many people watched around the world, it felt odd walking through neighborhoods to get to GSL inside a school

Very tourist friendly. Closer to other attractions. Big plus

GSL relocating, HD broadcast equipment and new games.

Together with their already huge capacities to run streams to a lot of concurrent viewers (bandwidth) this is going to get very interesting.

That's not true at all.

Asia picked up HDTV technology a lot faster than elsewhere. When HDTV was first popularised in Hong Kong (all were FHD unless it is the ~20inch ones), England was stucked in those so called "HDTV" which actually offered 720p only, it wasn't until later when the term FHD came out to avoid the confusion.

you can't really buy those old style TVs anymore in the electronic store.

This could also be an indication they want to hold more events at COEX like they did with a GSL Finals as the studio will be closer to the venue. Loving the movie since it's closer to my home in Korea, much more accessible to get to.

League never padded viewer numbers.

It was a rumor that keeps popping up because sheep keep believing it and passing it along.

They embedded stream in their client, which is padding viewer numbers.

They had a link to it, it's not like it autoplayed whenever someone opened the client. So you had to click it yourself in order to count.

They didn't embed the stream itself, they just provided a link players could click which took you to the stream in your web browser of choice. It's not padding viewer numbers if people click the link and decide to watch, it's just good advertising.

(...) With the opening of the GOMTV Gangnam Studio all studio broadcasting equipment will be switched to HD [T/N: 1080p perhaps?], and will provide a more spacious spectating space for visitors to the studio.

I'm gonna expect them to start broadcasting LoL in the future. It just makes sense, they need to feature the top e-sport to remain competitive in Korea.
You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

A GOMTV spokesman stated that GOMTV has been looking for a new studio for the past year, evaluating many candidate locations for the ability to accommodate a wider variety of eSports and more visitors; the Gangnam Studio location was chosen for its accessibility and proximity to hospitality facilities.

wonder what that means, maybe league of legends on gomtv.

That is literally the only game they could hold that would make sense in korea atm. Plus wolf said something about them casting lol in the future on a sotg quiet a while back.

Nice to see, I loved it when the studio changed all the time during open seasons/first code s so I'm really excited to see the new studio setup.

GOM already did LoL.

Maybe because it wasn't a main league, but SC2 got more viewers that week on the international and Korean GOM website than the Korean IPL qualifiers. I don't see GOM kicking SC2 to the side as the #2. Especially when OGN already pretty much owns the LoL market in Korea.

Also, just in terms of who GOM can make more off of, if it's just Korean teams in a GSL Proleague/tournament, I don't see it selling well. Could change if GOM could get a TSM or EG to play in their team league. I think it'd do better in Korea over SC2, but GOM already has a faithful fanbase that buy tickets and have gotten used to paying for 99% Korean and maybe a foreigner once in a blue moon.

With LCS, I highly doubt top tier NA/EU teams like TSM or EG would move to Korea for several months. That said, I doubt it's worth bringing in any "B-tier" foreign teams for GOM's LoL league. So it'll likely be Korean only at this point.

I'm happy for them on the new studio but hopefully they follow through with a higher resolution broadcast. They claim 1080p but 720p would be fine for me for the subscription cost.

An answer someone got when asked about the current state of their stream quality:

"Dear #####,
We are working on improving the stream quality for our foreign fans but are limited in the required equipment at the moment.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards,
GOMTV.net Support Team"

Looks like GOM likes us foreigners. Even more happy to pay if it´s 1080p in the future.
Real downscaled 720p should look awesome, too, since it´s done with the right equipment. The interview room from Ironsquid had an extremely impressive 720p downscale (the one where the hilarious transitions happened), my mouth was open several times. 720p can look very very good.

Maybe we even get 720p 60fps? Who knows. Let´s hope we can get some more details, soon.

Depends on what method of transport. Subway's okay because Hongdae is on the green line, taxi is a bitch though - especially in traffic.

I can see it now, the first pro-gamer to win his match gets interviewed, "You showed special tactics in game 5. What were you thinking?"

"I wanted to do something unique for game 5, so I decided to win gangnam style."

It actually potentially could. I remember when league used their client to pad numbers on streams. :p

League never padded viewer numbers.

It was a rumor that keeps popping up because sheep keep believing it and passing it along.

They embedded stream in their client, which is padding viewer numbers.

This has been a rumor which has been proven untrue many times.. For major tournaments riot re skins their client to focus solely on the tournament in question and in that re skin there is a huge link that people can link that brings them to the screen. That is NOT padding viewers

Sometimes I really wonder how GOM makes any profit at all. They don't seem to have a lot of sponsors, and surely the GSL subscriptions cannot cover the entire cost of running the business? But GOM seems to somehow do it, so all power to them!

Well, it's also the business district of Seoul. So there's much office space that competes with each other to be rented out. Although this is directly on famous Teheran Boulevard, thus prime real estate. But apparently GOM/Gretech already had their head offices there anyway.

It costs over $100 for a yearly subscription, and that's just for the GSL. If they have 10,000 subscribers that's a million dollars. This isn't counting people who buy monthly passes or passes for the GSTL. They also have an in house studio and don't have to offer airfare for the star players like IPL or MLG. This drastically cuts down on operation costs. Imagine if MLG did all their production from their NYC offices and only had a live SC2 tournament for the final 4.

The GOM player is the de facto media player in Korea. They have the backing of a very large corporation. I doubt they've been struggling for the past 2 years.

Nice! Now I'll have to make another trip to Korea to see it! I did end up seeing oGs-TL vs FXO back at the old studio, it would be cool to see another team league match at the new one in the future.

Yes, but that is only for the people outside of Korea, right?
Or do the Koreans also have to pay, if they want to watch GSL?

They don't have to pay, because most of GOMTV's and the teams' sponsors are aiming for Korean viewers, so they don't want to turn them away.

By the way, GSL do have a sponsor, if one watch the recent GSL in twich, he would surely notice its Hot6. And before, that, they had others like LG and Pepsi

Good to see GOMTV doing well! Hope they continue to do great things for esports!

To people surprised at the whole thing with other games, why are you surprised? They already covered LoL once with the IPL5 qualifiers.

No one in korea plays dota though. Korea = LoL, China = Dota

As if they needed more places... I can't help but laugh and feel depressed at the same time... :/

What? Why????

I'm confused at his reply also, mokdong was almost always full to the brim with spectators

+ the new HD equipment was what was holding back the other studio, 540p for example being their 1080p

Simply put, everytime i'm watching the GomTV's stream, they always get like tons of empty chairs especially when there's no notables players.
That's why i'm saying that's depressing. Just watch any Code A match that has no JD / Flash / Big pro in this day.

Chung from GOM made a quick video showing the interior of the new studio, It's still being built so there's not much to see but you can grasp the size of it.

GOM does have sponsors, for example, the Code S title sponsor is HOT6. If not, GOM will have to pay the prize money out of their own company funds.

Actually, even with "notables" players such as MC and DRG, and to a lesser extent Yoda and Flying, there is still like 3/4 of empty chairs.
Kinda depressing really
