We followed the Liquid team around San Francisco as they prepped for and played in the IPL Team Arena Challenge 3 Finals against Incredible Miracle.

Here is Part 1, which covers the Friday before the event. Part 2 will be released later this week.

Does no one else feel like there was alot of tension in those parts they showed, like they took the most dramatic moments from following them. The scene with Kevin was really intense and you could tell liquid were all pissed about the dates, like i think its pretty obviously shown, and Ret really had done barely any research on the players, every player they talked about he just hadn't done research on them, think that might say alot about his motivation and time invested at the moment, I actually don't feel like this group was the happy go lucky liquid that we are used too.

This is awesome - I feel like this is what people expected with Liquid Rising, but I think it largely depends on the event and what transpires in between them. This was good though!

Didn't watch all of it, but the majority of the time you see public people are in situations where it's very easy to be happy go lucky as you put it, but in private it's much more like... family/business/friends combination and there's of course tense situations where people disagree or whatever.

"where did that come from?"

Wow this is an awesome video for looking into the mindset going into an event like that. And knowing what happened afterwards it was pretty insane too. The bit with TLO seemed a little bit like he was adding pressure to himself well at least thats what I saw and I thought that might be a little bit bad for him going into that expecting too much from himself(I get being a competitor you have to think you are going to win every match ever but sometimes being relaxed adds a lot of focus).

Interesting. Did we just witness Victor renewing contracts with all the players? And what's this, a clause that says they have to play Victor on short notice? hehe

That was really awesome to see. It's cool how much goes into preparing a team match like this. It was crazy seeing Victor quizzing Jos on which player does what.
Even during difficult times, when I sat down to play the game, there were times where it felt like god has descended down and played [for me].

TLO looked so awesome when they did the intro-shooting ...
i hope there will be pictures of that, so i get a new background for my PC

I was a little bit disapointed when i saw the white van in the beginning.
there should be a TL-Team-Van someday. with Big logo on roof and on the sides, matching colors ofc.
and when the cars gets too old or wont be used, you can make an auction or sth and give it to the fans :D

That was really excellent. It's interesting to see the thought about what order players will get sent out, and matchup preferences, and everything. It looked like the player comfort levels were a huge factor.

Excellent video, I can't wait to see part 2. I think what makes this segment interesting is the discussion of the strategy for a team match. A lot of other videos just show players goofing around, which is cool and all but can get dull after a while. If anyone knows, what is the 40-80-120 stuff Victor was talking about during the player contract renewals?

Also, I think TL could benefit from a Korean translator at these events. When discussing the strategies, I feel (judging by Zenio's and Hero's facial expressions) that the Korean members have something to add to the strategy discussion but didn't know how to explain it and therefore just said "more thinking" or "good coach".

They mentionned in the video (TLO) that he was coming in later today. So that would explain why we didn't see Sheth in part 1.

Also great Video.

Didn't watch all of it, but the majority of the time you see public people are in situations where it's very easy to be happy go lucky as you put it, but in private it's much more like... family/business/friends combination and there's of course tense situations where people disagree or whatever.

Very true man, after thinking about it and sobering up a bit I have to commend Liquid, most teams wouldn't release footage like this imo because it doesn't show what we are used to, this is real conflict, real emotions, and actually just the players and staff being themselves!
Still sad that Ret appears to have not done his research for TAC because I really like Ret but the commitment may not always be there :/ Thanks for releasing this guys

Definitely some tension in the scene with Kevin, but I would say in general, considering it's the day before the tournament they're unlikely to be super relaxed, they had to win two straight best of 9s against IM!

Yup, I agree with Zenio. Good Coach. Victor was very impressive strategizing everything. Even if in some ways it was almost unnecessary, the process itself must have been a HUGE confidence boost to the players. Like, a real aura of "we can do this" resonates from each of them after talking with Nazgul. I think that was just so awesome.

So interesting! I never knew TL.net's Ks were so incentive based! For whatever reason, I assumed they'd all be base period.

OFC, what's even more interesting is that TL would apparently disclose some info about salaries (certainly not clear, who knows if they're talking dollars, euro or whatever) in this little mini doc. I wonder why they would do that. But maybe I shouldn't wonder, because the sums are impressively high.

Even more than that, I'm impressed with he discussion of strategy by Nazgul. At the same time, it makes me think they should hire a coach. Shouldn't naz be focusing on business? But I bet he really enjoys doing it. I'd do EXACTLY the same thing in his position.

Cholera sick doc.I think the key to good doc is showing people something they think they aren't supposed to see. Vice versa for a bad one.

I'm not 100% sure the 40-80-120 thing is directly related to salaries. Sure, it could be 40k-80k-120k based on performance, but didn't they video say they were "getting rid of the 120," which everyone seemed to think was a good idea. I highly doubt anyone would want to give up (at least the option of) earning 120k.

Those numbers could mean anything. They could be percentages of something (tournament winnings, stream revenue, etc.), a number of days (for contract length, renewal, etc.), minimum number of practice games in a given period, or really anything else in the whole world where those numbers make sense.

It's also entirely possible that HotBid or someone else deliberately put that part in to troll us, and it really means nothing.

I hate to repeat what others said before. Nevertheless: IMHO this little video gives what Liquid Rising couldn't A personal perspective on how the TLPro-Team works, all these little interactions, everything that you totally lose when you only show how people talk about what they think about how they interact with other people.

Waiting for part 2

Victor does his freaking research man. Im impressed with how well prepared he has team liquid, did not realize there was that much coaching involved.

So much win in this behind the scenes! I loved every bit of it. Especially the parts with Victor, amazing what kind of person he is. Love to see more of his coaching in these "documentaries".

I don't often post on TL, but when i do, it's because something is damn worth it!
Rejoice, for very bad things are about to happen!

Read it as Liquid-Rising is a Cholera-sick (very sick, aka very good) documentary film.

"Mmm... Mmmmm. Good coach"

This was great. I'm thinking the 40-80-120 thing was winning bonuses? Like if people won 1 game they got $40, then $80 for the second win etc?

Can't wait for part 2!

Yeah, there wasn't really a chance to play ZvT in either series. :/

I don't know how he feels about ZvP, but I would be inclined to pick him instead of Ret in the second series.

I am so mad that Liquid Rising wasn't made in this fashion. Who had the genius idea to make it like they did when this sincere behind the scene does all the trick and is the cheapest. So mad.

it's the hard choices you have to make when you're in the finals against a team that's all around better (barring their terran nuke).

Btw, maybe 60-80-120 is related to work hours that they agree to put in, or maybe practice matches depending on situations.

I get the impression from Zenio, that he's a very upfront guy about everything to anyone - I think "Mmm... Good coach" is his highest form of praise, lol

Really enjoyed this, just watching a second time - HerO pingpong bonjwa... However, I saw him play at the Twitch-office and I gotta say... He looked pretty chobo ^_^ - All players rocked the "asian-grip" on the bat though, which is just automaticly bonus fear factor, regardless of how you play, haha

Really looking forward to part 2!!

That was impressive, I've never really since the players like this before, preparing so intensely before a big match.

If I remember correctly Liquid was coming off of a lot of recent tournaments and they didn't have much prep time. But I'm not sure. Regardless, Ret might've just been focusing on practice and letting Naz'gul do the research. Who knows. I just don't think this is evidence of not being commited

Agreed but man without Sheth(in the video), (what was Huk formerly in TL) and Jinro (even tho he faded towards the end) everyone just seemed high strung / kinda miserable. I miss that feeling of when I saw TL members at MLG a year ago or in other documentaries that super happy up beat feeling. I almost felt sad if not for TLO after watching this video :/

I don't think people are really sad or anything. I think people were just super serious. Also, I didn't get that impression much at all, to be perfectly honest. At any rate, I can confirm that people on TL are not secretly pessimistic people.

don't listen to this man. you have seen the glitch in the matrix!

the streaming, the tweets, the articles, the fanclub posts.

ALL LIES MEANT TO CONTROL YOU.

secretly TL is the most pessimistic team ever. just look at Zenio. that man's face is a face of a thug! he probably bullies little Haypro when the camera's not looking.

TLO? hipster trying to get attention by being unique.

Tyler? pretentious emo who pretends to be an intellect.

Haypro? Stone cold killer.

Hero? Taeja? Korean mercenaries only in it for the money.

this video was meant to be another piece in their propaganda campaign, to advertise a "family" atmosphere that doesn't exist.

they all mutually despise each other, and none of them are truly happy deep down.

take the red pill neo! don't take the blue TL colored one.

haha don't get me wrong. I am not saying TL is a sad team. I just felt sad after watching it. I just liked seenig more bubbly stuff outta them when like sheth and huk were wrestling and stuff felt more like a family. Maybe cause this was a much more serious event in terms of team performance so everyone probably was thinking about game time.

If I were in their position, I would be extremely stressed out. I think it's hard to imagine how much pressure they were under to perform in the finals against a ridiculously good team like IM. This is the big time in terms of team leagues for Team Liquid and can really only be topped by making a deep run in the GSTL (if they participate again). I think the epitome of the video is Victor trying to take the pressure of possibly being picked off of TLO.
Even during difficult times, when I sat down to play the game, there were times where it felt like god has descended down and played [for me].

Definitely tense with Victor but it showed the reality that TL is running a business and paying them well to perform. Personally I think Ret will eventually be cut but that's neither here nor there.... and my "politics opinion".

The fact is, other than Taeja and Hero, the other players have not been performing well at all lately. I can feel the tension between the players. They need to step it up and they know it and I think that's the point of the filming - to show that Team Liquid is still taking the SC2 scene seriously.

Lastly - the most negative players are having the biggest effect on the team... Much like the most positive players had a big effect on the team. If TL continues the path they're on, I can only assume management would wake up and get rid of the people that don't give a fuck *cough* Ret *cough*.

Why would you say Ret doesn't give a fuck?

I went to IPL4 and saw Ret after he lost and he was fucking pissed.

I want more conspiracy theories on the 40-80-120 to 40-80 no 120..

Damn it TL we can conspiracize all day but I want someone to make something up. I'll start.

40 for being on the team

80 for winning a tournament/sweeping in a team league

That is why he is going to the Ministry of Win to train really hard with a good schedule and such.

Please inform yourself just a little before you start talking nonsense about Ret

I rewatched the video, it is just so good :D

Cool video. I think this is probably closer to what people were expecting from Liquid Rising. I'd love to see more of these for future events; you just gotta find some way to monitize them so it's worth it for you guys

Honestly this is one of the coolest SC2 team videos I've seen. Does a great job of telling a story of what a team goes through for an upcoming team tourney match. Please moar!!!

Like everyone has said in this thread, this is the type of content I'd love to see a lot more of. It really grabs my attention and I could watch hours upon hours of it.

Sounded like those contracts Nazgul was signing with TLO and Ret were 5 years. That's crazy.

80 for winning a tournament/sweeping in a team league

Plexa is the man when it comes to researching opponents. The amount of VODs and replays he can watch and summarize in short amounts of time is scary.

Now i know why when people join TL they just unlock their potential and start to show their maximum. Just see the performances and the stability of the games for people before joining during their stay and after leaving TL. Huk for example,he was one of the best protosses when he left TL and since then his performances are decreasing with every month. Hero and Taeja both have won several major tournaments, and have been playing very well in all others all of that after they joined TL. Zenio also improved his play but his major win is still to come.

Very very nice teamwork you have there TL! Keep it up!

Maybe cause this was a much more serious event in terms of team performance so everyone probably was thinking about game time.

chills went up and down my spine as the slow motion close up of TLO closed out this film.

the chills turned into a cold sweat when i realised that i was not just impressed by this man's face, but deeply moved.

i began to cry but stopped myself just in time by punching myself in the face.

unfortunately i had about 3 or 4 ripe strawberries in my hand at the time so they exploded all over my laptop.

the electrical shock set my mattress on fire (it was late at night) and i am now sleeping on the floor.

the floor is cold and holds no pleasant memories of ladies for me.

i am alone on the floor.

What were u doing with strawberries in the middle of the night? Otherwise the story is quite believable. I would see that happening to me.

Same for me, halfway trough their part i realized they were speaking Dutch. But for some reason it was hard to understand them, maybe because of the English subtitles, don't know.

Great movie.

Probably referring to the first part of this interview. Although to be fair this behind the scenes video goes in a completely different direction to what Nazgul mentions here; more raw, more uncut and getting to see a very different side. Though in the same way being more 'documentary' than what Liquid Rising was in the sense that it actually followed people around and documented.
