First of all, I'm sorry I will only be able to do these two interviews as the website I translate from only translated these two interviews. Thanks Wozzot for the StarTale_Parting interview
StarTale_Curious + Show Spoiler +Q: How does it feel making it to the round of 16 of the winner's bracket?A: I heard that Rain was really good, and so I felt that the match today would be a very tough one. However, after the games were over, I realised that the games were actually won quite comfortably. I guess I get this feeling mainly because my strategy in the first game was really successful. Q: Your opponent was Kespa player Rain. What were your thoughts when you first saw the brackets?A: I thought that it was inevitable that such a day would eventually come. We started playing Starcraft 2 much earlier than them, and if I had lost today, I would really have to spend some time reflecting when I went back. Fortunately I won today. Q; You won the first game today with a really strong all-in attack.A: Kespa players are really good in terms of their mechanics. That'd be the case when they come to Starcraft 2 as well. If I played the game according to the recent metagame, I wouldn't have been able to make the most of my advantage. As a result, I was thinking towards some older builds. My team mate recommended this build to me, and I chose to use it today. It was recommended to me by a team mate who just recently joined the team. Q: The second game went on much longer than expected.A: At that time, after the game was over, my coach told me that the game should have been over long ago. But during the game, my thoughts were that I should play with a more stable style, and the game dragged on as a result. Q; Your opponent in the round of 16 of the winner's bracket is Miya.A: Recently, the match up I am least confident in is ZvP, and so I am very glad to have been able to win today. My next opponent is Miya, and I am very confident in my ZvZ. I think the games will be very entertaining. Q: This tournament uses a double-elimination format.A: This format is something really foreign to me. As there's still another chance even after losing, there is comparatively less stress, and as a result, less nervousness. Q: How's your form recently?A: I'm still unable to rediscover the form I was at when I was at my peak, and I think there're still a lot of flaws. I'm able to win in tournament games because of my luck. I'm going to have to work really hard to improve my level of play to be properly prepared for my next games or the next GSL Code S. Q: Any last things to add?A: I want to thank Ace, Squirtle, Parting, Oz, and Avenge for practising with me. I also want to thank our sponsors BenQ, Red Bull, and Zowie.
StarTale_Parting + Show Spoiler +PartinG: "I would like to face Jaedong"ST_PartinG lived up to his namesake, the "Terran Killer", today. During the first three rounds of the RO32 on the sixth day of the Korean WCS, Parting took down MVP_sC 2-0. He took the first set with a miraculously composed defense, and he held off sC's offensive wave in the second to make it through to the RO16. How do you feel about making it to the RO16?I feel great. If I win just two more matches, I can reach the top 10. If I make it that far, I can make it to the Asia finals, so I feel quite confident. I will face either Jaedong or aLive in the next round, and I am okay with either one, as my PvZ is getting better. SC's attack during the first set was formidable. During the RO4 of Code S last season, what is the reason that you lost to Mvp?At that time, my win rate was quite good in practice games. From the beginning, my coach told me not to get full of myself, but I said "yes" only in word, but after losing to Mvp-hyung that way, all of that pride completely disappeared. In the second set, did you predict how strong sC's attack would be?That is true, but sC's play was still good. I predicted that he would hit a medivac timing, but I didn't see the follow-up coming. In the first set, you held off the siege tank attack very well.Terrans can no longer play only as they used to. I am working hard to patch up that aspect of my play. I f you play against Jaedong in the RO16, what do you think it will be like? Many fans think that this would be very exciting, so I really want this to happen. Since the opportunity could come soon, I would like to take it. Jaedong is a great player in Proleague; I think he is the most skilled player in the TBLS. I've watched Jaedong's matches very often. I think that Team 8 is one of the stronger teams; I have a good feeling about them, and I see them very often when I turn on my TV. Are you looking towards reaching first place in this tournament?I've moved forward in every Korean tournament, so I feel like I have momentum, but I still don't know. FnaticRC_aLive + Show Spoiler +Q: How does it feel making it to the round of 16 of the winner's bracket?A: I knew I had to win today's match, but I was quite stressed because Jaedong had such a reputation. I'm not usually the sort who gets stressed before games. I kept trying to calm myself down before the games, and to treat this game as if it were my first ever professional competition, and that relieved some of my nervousness. It wasn't too bad. Even though winning today was kind of granted, today's victory makes me happier than when I defeat Code S players. Q: What were your thoughts after seeing the brackets?A: To be honest, I was thinking to myself 'Why Jaedong'. There were so many other competitors that it could have been. It would have felt so much more comfortable if I were just matched up against other GSL competitors. It just gives me a weird feeling when I think about having to play against Kespa players. The people around me kept telling me I must not lose. That put a lot of pressure on me. Q: Give an assessment of today's games.A: If I ignored the ID, there isn't much of a difference between his skill level and the skill level of GSL players. His creep spread and his multi-tasking really amazed me. However, he didn't seem to be very good at defending against medivacs. Maybe it's just a lack of experience. In the second game, I just thought that I would win if I played according to my own style, and I chose the safe two barracks build. Q: You put yourself at a nice advantage in the second game with your marines with the two barracks opening.A: By right, this opening should not be able to give me such a good advantage. I guess it's because he did not think that I would be using this tactic. It seemed like he had wanted to use an all-in strategy. In the end, I attacked before his all-in could hit me. After that, the game just went the way I wanted it to. Q: Were you intimidated by Jaedong's popularity?A: To be honest, I don't have many fans even if my opponent wasn't Jaedong. It feels like I'm an invisible terran. I guess if I continue working hard and persevering, maybe more people would come to know of me. Q: Your next round opponent is Parting.A; I lost to him previously in Code A. That time, I lost really horribly because I had just came back from an overseas tournament. This time, I will prepare well. Even if I lose, I want to make the games entertaining. Since I defeated Jaedong, I cannot let his fans down. Q: What are your aims for this tournament?A: The first aim is to be in the top 10. After that, I'll take it a step at a time. I think very highly of this tournament, and I will prepare really well so I can get good results. Q; Any last things to add?A: I want to thank our sponsors Raidcall, Eizo, Steel Series, MSI. I also want to thank the fans who have been supporting me, as well as my team mates and my parents. Recently, my fans have been asking me why I am becoming more and more like invisible terran. But I'm very satisfied even just to have someone calling me invisible terran. I hope to be able to play against Light soon since I've already become invisible terran.[T/N: Light is a player from Brood War, now SC2 with the nickname Invisible Terran. For more detail about Light's nickname, see http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=129558][T/N: I left out a line in his answer for the last question. Not sure what it really means. Don't think it really affects it. Also, invisible can also be translated transparent I think. I go along with invisible terran since that's written as Light's nickname on Liquipedia.]

Curious build order choice in game 1 was just brilliant

Q; You won the first game today with a really strong all-in attack. My team mate recommended this build to me, and I chose to use it today. It was recommended to me by a team mate who just recently joined the team.
This just screams Suhosin -.-

my fans have been asking me why I am becoming more and more like invisible terran. "Boring Terran" fits him better.

Hahhaha typical aLive saying he has no fans.
I'm a fan.

Yeah he's invisible because he has no personality.... Like I almost immediately turned off IPL 4 once it was nearing the end. All squirtle and alive did was stand there emotionless. It was so boring.

alive the invisible boring terran T.T
IPL4 was obviously Squirtles show, and in the finals, his struggle and fight to comeback vs aLive, not aLive's victory
|
IPL4 was overshadowed by GSTL final thingy and MKP's quest for world domination.
So the air went out after MKP got knocked out and everything after that was kind of a fuzz.

Alive is a boss I like him. People who only care about personality are dumb. Skill > all.

Keep winning Alive. Someday people will notice it. Atleast people still don't ask who are you like someone who won GSL but I can't really remember what's his name. umm Plott something like that..

I love Curious. The guy is humble, and possesses a nice dry humour that many Koreans don't have. Plus, the guy can win a sick macro game then hit you with an equally lethal all-in the next match. aLive.. possibly one of my least favourite players in SC2 along with MMA and DongRaeGu.
And before you castrate me for listing DRG.. theres only so many times I can take Fruitdealer, MC July and Nestea getting thrashed by him before I develop a grudge~.

"Hey, I'm Shiori, and my opinion matters more than anyone else. Anyone who disagrees with me is dumb." If you want personality go watch a comedy show. I watch Starcraft for the Starcraft. Personality is a highlight, but it's second fiddle to how good a player actually is. I'm sorry if you don't see it that way. Seems completely illogical to me. Maybe saying "dumb" was mean. But I definitely don't see why someone who prioritizes personality would even watch Starcraft to begin with. Might as well just go to TMZ and read interviews.
And I said people who only care about personality are dumb. Not even people who care about it a bit. If you write off a player because you think he's boring (even if he's a bonjwa) then you probably don't give a fuck about Starcraft.

Am I the only one who was rooting for Alive in this series? Or in the IPL finals? I like that guy. Maybe his playstyle is not the most interesting but he's a safe and solid terran. You can learn a lot from him. Maybe he doesn't show his personality as much as MC. But he has talent and heart and for me that's enough to cheer for him.

I was rooting for him both time, which is different from remembering him all the time.

I think a more elaborate T/N about the Light = Invisible terran joke might be worthwhile (don't know if I could do it justice). Maybe.
Thanks for the translation! He's going to lose to Parting!

Honestly I believe the problem with Alive is not that he has "no personality" but rather the fact that he plays T, you have to consider that the dominant race over the course of those 2 years of starcraft was indeed terran with more than half the gold medals and several periods of 1-3 months when T was practically unbeatable at a pro level. You have so many korean terrans over these 2 years that have results better or similar to Alive ( MVP, MMA, MKP, Nada, Jjakji, Teja, Polt... the list goes fucking on ) Now lets look at the korean protosses that would have been on the same level with Squirtle in terms of results if he was the one to win that IPL... MC, Hero, recently Seed, pretty much it. Wonder why people were cheering for Squirtle ?
Its the same thing happening with Z recently, a lot of "good" zergs are starting to go unnoticed because zergs are winning so much in the last few months.

I am a huge PartinG fanboy, so I took the time to translate his own interview. This is my first time, so please proofread this and tell me if I messed up anything!
PartinG: "I would like to face Jaedong"

Maybe because most of current SC2 pros were already BW pros for years? I really know very little about SC2 pro-scene, but I've read somewhere the majority of GSL players were unsuccessful BW pros.

Alot people played BW, which is expected since the short duration of SC2. You really can't expect people to start play game after SC2 come out, and BW is the natural choice. However most of them did not play BW long enough at high level to really stand out.
Nestea, MMA, TheSTC, GanZi, SuperNoVa, FD, Tester can be said to be B Teamers A couple more such as ForGG were mid tier Then you get BoxeR, NaDa, July, Rainbow
Alot more (which include MC, MKP, HerO, PuMa, Genius, LosirA, Puzzle, Ryung etc) spent some time in BW pro team but too short to amount to anything

You bring up a good example in Jjakji. I think it's fair to say only the casual fanbase knew next to nothing about him going up into that GSL Finals. IIRC, the LR thread going in was mostly pro-Leenock and after the matches everyone was pretty pumped after seeing some amazing games. Jjakji won some fans not by showing his personality through any fancy interviews, but through his play. The problem with Alive is that both his interviews and his play is uninspired. I still can't remember him doing anything really unique during the period you're referring to as he seemed to be just refining borrowed strats.

Playing a solid style and winning with it isn't uninspired. It's just not especially innovative. Innovation for the sake of innovation may win you fans, but more often than not it loses you games (see pretty much every "creative" player of the past year, with a couple of exceptions).

aLive has used some nonstandard builds here and there. I remember a few wacky 1-1-1's and ghost rushes that he used to do all the time on Crossfire in particular. While he hasn't been the most creative he isn't "uninspired", thats for sure.

Was ForGG really mid-tier? He did win the Arena MSL in 2008, which was a huge accomplishment, beating Flash and Jaedong both when they were dominant.

Which means he was top-tier at one point. Just because it was four years ago doesn't mean he lacks to talent to repeat. Its the same thing with hockey fans.. some people are just obsessed and enamoured with the immediate past and present results. Don't count out the guys who have been there. They have the experience and can easily do it again.

he wouldn't have said that if they faced each other in SC1 :D give parting 10 years and stop the time for jeadong under the mean time and then we will see what happens, why is every1 saying its obvious that bw pros will not pwn in sc2 after 6 months of practise when sc2 pros has been playing for 2 years?well then why don't we just say that the other way around aswell? which has an even bigger cap Maybe because most of current SC2 pros were already BW pros for years? I really know very little about SC2 pro-scene, but I've read somewhere the majority of GSL players were unsuccessful BW pros. I know MC used to be called flounder in BW xD Isn't Parting super-young? (Just checked, he's 17 atm. I doubt he was a BW pro.) Alot people played BW, which is expected since the short duration of SC2. You really can't expect people to start play game after SC2 come out, and BW is the natural choice. However most of them did not play BW long enough at high level to really stand out. Nestea, MMA, TheSTC, GanZi, SuperNoVa, FD, Tester can be said to be B Teamers A couple more such as ForGG were mid tierThen you get BoxeR, NaDa, July, Rainbow Alot more (which include MC, MKP, HerO, PuMa, Genius, LosirA, Puzzle, Ryung etc) spent some time in BW pro team but too short to amount to anything Was ForGG really mid-tier? He did win the Arena MSL in 2008, which was a huge accomplishment, beating Flash and Jaedong both when they were dominant. Four years ago. I'm not saying they don't have the talent. I'm saying they may lack the confidence, or the form, or the fitness, or whatever. ForGG seems to be rather past his prime, IMO. I hope he shows otherwise, though.

Haha, I knew people would catch that, although I honestly didn't know who the other one was. =P

"I want to thank Ace, Squirtle, Parting, Oz, and Avenge for practising with me."
Not a shabby lineup of practice partners.

I think when he talks about unsuccessful BW pros, he means some guy who's aiming to become a BW pro, which is the case for a lot of SC2 players. I'm pretty sure most of them had some time practising to get their BW licenses and spent time in popular BW clans. When they were unsuccessful, they moved on to SC2 to try their luck.
That's probably how a lot of these younger players (KeSPA and non-KeSPA) know each other.

Wow, parting not being cocky in a post game interview. What has the world come to. =O

Makes me so sad to see aLive himself and a lot of people here think of him as the invisi-terranT_T... Even though he has an unassuming, quiet, and generally unnresponsive personality on stage, in the interviews I've seen of him he has an endearing modesty and he puts so much thought and effort into making entertaining games and winning. Since he started to appear in code S last fall, his variety of play amazed me and I hoped he would get a championship, but it never came. His build choice has been a little iffy lately, but he's a top-5 terran for sure, and should most definitely get more credit than what most people are seeming to give him.

Gonna start cheering for Alive more now, seeing him talk about not having many fans made me sad

Hahahaha Curious' face is the funniest thing ever
-_-

Nice manner by Alive. Yeah, he can't let down JD's fans after beating JD. GO ALIVE!
|
I admire Alive's personality. He is so humble

Interesting that Sting is teamless? Was this mentioned on TSL broadcast?

Curiooooooooous! :D
PartinG's the same old PartinG hahahahaha

Thanks Weirdkid and Wozzot for these interviews! Appreciated!

Aww poor alive, but good attitude! I love that guy - i don't get the whole boring thing, he's a very interesting person in his own right. Hopefully he feels more comfortable in the spotlight though and continues to dominate =)
