MMA was the original hero of Slayers, so it'd be sad to see it not work out. Work ethic might be one of the reasons though, a player as talented as he is realistically shouldn't be spending so much time grinding out games in Code A/bottomfeeding Code S. Quite frankly though, there's most likely some sort of personal issue beyond that, because demotion to B and kicking out of team house is pretty extreme form of punishment.

With everyone wanting to leave the team it kind of seems something is fucked up in the SlayerS house.

He has been a bit iffy since the SlayerS coach left a while back. This is still really shocking though, wonder what the hell happened

I just woke up and read that my favorite player is in trouble ?

Why did he get demoted..... ?

What happened ?

I just don't want see him go to coL or Fnatic, nor EG...

(Well... EG could be cool since ThorZaIN and him are good friend, but just only because of that !)

Well, GoOdy will be at the next Arena too. So watch out korean pros, don't lose or you will get a demotion.

Well, Nestea is still in IM's A-team, despite losing to Goody once.

So much crap being said TT_TT

Yes we all want to know what happened, but there's really no point in speculating over what actually happened and preemptively pointing fingers at people :\

This. I'm really surprised by the suddeness of all of this, but I want to hear the "official" reason. Not the unsupported speculations....

He hasn't left Slayers, and can't leave unless Slayers is willing to let him go.

note that MMA was not in GSTL for a long time now when he used to be their ace.

it could be something simple like MMA failing to make the slayers qualifiers (slayers has an internal system that mirrors gsl with promotions and demotions just like gsl). if he fell out of the slayers equivalent to code a the consequence could be him having to leave the house.

Slayers is fine without MMA right now.

How so? When teams look for potential investments in players, one of the things they look for is their potential. MMA has already proven himself to be a world class player and furthermore if you were to compare him with his current teammates, I don't see a skill gap at all, to be honest. Additionally, if you were to look at the money that MMA has brought the team compared to any of the other players (Excluding Boxer, of course), I'm pretty sure that all of the players combined do not equal MMA's earnings. According to SC2Ranks.com, $174,715 was made by SlayersMMA, placing him 4th in the overall top earners list, topping even the likes of DRG. If you take that figure and compare it to the next highest SlayerS earner, Alicia, you see that his $41,225 pales in comparison.

Regardless of any "slump" that MMA could be in right now, either MMA did something extremely terrible to deserve his punishment, or an extremely amateur business decision was made to ignore the extra cushion their 'cash cow' should have earned while being seemingly unbeatable for around 4-6 months in 2011. It's got to be one of the two.

I don't think the MMA news has anything to do with Jessica per se. Boxer considered MMA his protege and seemed very invested in him becoming a truly great player and leader. But like nearly every GSL winner, MMA's play deteriorated shortly after his big win. GSL winners get a large sum of money, and given how young most are, it's not surprising that they seemingly become relaxed after winning, and decide to start spending the money (sure they buy their parents stuff, but they also clearly spend it on themselves). And while most of the GSL winners rebound eventually, some sooner than others, MMA has pretty much fallen off the map.

We were talking in the NASL thread about his heavy micro/aggression style going out of style as Terran became more macro oriented, and I think that's part of the reason he has fallen off. Another reason is likely due to practice. If he isn't showing the proper determination in practice, I could totally see Boxer attempting to demote him as a means of motivating/shaming him. But apparently it backfired...

I think we're going to see more of this. BW pros practiced under harsher and more concentrated circumstances than most SC2 players. That's not to say SC2 players don't practice, just that they aren't practicing as much as many BW teams do/did. Boxer is obviously from that old school mind set, and has witnessed players on his own former teams work very hard and ultimately reach great heights (iloveoov). I wouldn't be surprised if he is trying to get MMA to that level, but MMA is simply not as motivated.

Joining a foreigner team offers great opportunity while rewarding laziness in many ways; if MMA were to join a major foreigner team, it's very unlikely he would "have" to practice hard, and would instead be flown from tournament to tournament enjoying the thrill of fans and winning money. I fear that if we continue to see moves like this, the Korean scene might begin to protect itself by cooperating less and less with foreign teams/tournaments.

Yet none of us know. I don't think that can be over stated enough. Especially when ranting with such confidence. However I don't find your theory that unlikely.

You're right, we don't know for sure. I was just giving my opinion. I just feel like considering the things Boxer has said about MMA in the past, he expects a lot from him.

Also consider, MMA was a b-teamer on SK-T. Not sure if that reinforces or refutes your opinion, but thought I'd add that.

These kind of demotions were common in BW. The only thing controversial here was MMA's supposed reaction to this move. A player of his calibre would've made the A-team again in a little while.

yeah, true, but i think the context is slightly different as we're apparently talking about a punitive demotion. were there really notable, publicized cases of such in BW? can't really remember one.

I've already linked one, but sAviOr was another big one. He was temporarily demoted to the B-team in 2008 as well. You can find many, many more reading the BW roster change threads over the years.

The only reason I bring it up is because BoxeR is a huge proponent of the BW house system, and when I first read about the demotion I thought it would've been similiar to all these other ones from BW. Maybe it was some kind of punishment though?

Thing is SlayerS are actually quite a small team (particularly, as of recently and if you don't count the countless SlayerS clan members). Also there haven't really been any notable demotions due to bad practice performances/internal rankings.

Min, CoCa and Taeja (I believe he was at the house forawhile) are the only three who were at the house and left at some point. Both Min and Taeja left on their own accord while CoCa was forced out due to the Byun incident. I find it very unlikely that he was just demoted due to poor results and practice performances.

This is actually good point, Alicia was on the B-team earlier this year wasn't he? And afaik he was still living in the team house to train his way out of the slump. So if I'm remember correctly, being removed from the team-house wouldn't just be performance related.

Maybe somewhere in there it says something about attire (bit of a stretch)

GSL rules say you can only wear your team jersey or a generic Blizz/SC2 shirt. Although I think they've relaxed that rule some, lately.

Not that surprising, he lost the coach who carried him to his success and it can be hard for someone who managed to win big a few times to be relegated to the sidelines if they fall off.

His attitude was pretty obvious when Ryung won their last GSTL match for them and he just stood their with his arms folded while everyone else was clapping and hugging Ryung.

Looking forward to learning some more details.

It's not that surprising that he got moved to the B-team, but remember, he is still one of the 4 remaining Slayers players in this GSL (everyone else has been knocked out).

What is surprising is that he got kicked from the house, and is looking to join a new team. That's surprising, and few could have predicted that happening.

Goody 2-0'd MMA at MLG Spring Arena 2, which is seen as the most tragic point of his slump.

I'm surprised MMA didn't get banished from South Korea for that.

On a more serious note, I wonder what he did to deserve such punishment. It's quite Draconian.
