I've actually lost interest due to these "Arena" things. Just have a regular old MLG like you used to. I was significantly more hyped for those.

Please!

^ YUP!

I miss that season setup, lots of stories, and hype. All of it leading up to the main event at the end of the season, MLG championship.

Me too haha, there was the Midwest Meltdown with CSL, but an MLG would be sick... Toronto is somewhat close!

Wrong forums

Only 1 SC2 arena. We already got used to 2 :D

Too many arenas regardless. Events for events aren't a good way of packaging things. Need to make it easier to follow.

There's only one SC2 Arena, though. Regardless, there are four stages: Open Qualifiers, Invite-Only Qualifiers, Summer Arena, and Raleigh Pool Play. Listed below is how you qualify for each stage.

Open Qualifier
Anyone can sign up.

Invite-Only Qualifier - 32ish each region
Top 80 at Anaheim -> Invite-only Qualifier for your Region
Top 8 of Open Qualifier of your region -> Invite-only Qualifier for your Region

There are a good number of byes, as the breakdown of top 80 was not equal between the servers.

Summer Arena - 32 Total
Top 9 of EU Invite-Only -> Summer Arena
Top 9 of KR Invite-Only -> Summer Arena
Top 6 of NA Invite-Only -> Summer Arena
Top 8 at Anaheim -> Summer Arena

Raleigh Pool Play - 24 Total
Top 16 at Summer Arena -> Pool Play
8 Winners of Open Bracket Round 5 -> Pool Play

Well I'm certainly not paying attention :-/

This comment rather confuses me.

It goes back to what I said about Spring. Less confusion is always better. Simpilfy my brother.

In any case there is no reason to drop the storytelling when you have so much to go on from the qualifiers themselves.

To preface, I'm sorry if I implied that it's in any way on you. Successful or bad communication is solely on the communicator. The listener is never at fault - so if I'm making it difficult to follow, it's my fault. If I can't simplify it adequately, that's totally on me. Unless you're referring to the structure fundamentally, in which case, I have no way to change that, as I'm not really affiliated with MLG.

That said, Open qualifiers are necessary to ensure that people lacking the means to finance a trip to a Championship event have a chance to do so. An example of this would be the Korean SC2 teams in as early as a year ago: they have the talent to win an MLG, but not the money to send people to them. Open qualifiers are necessary to excise the Gret0rps from pool play and replacing them with the ZeNEX.Lifes of the world that don't have the means to travel but want to participate (no offense to either party, simply for the sake of example). Otherwise, you'd need to get top 80 to qualify to an Arena, and to get top 80, you'd need to travel to an MLG... kind of making it a problem.

The obvious flaw with that, then, is why have an Invite-Only qualifier - they did not, after all, have one for Winter Arena. At that point, I can't think of a justification off the top of my head. I need more coffee.

There was one part of your post that threw me off. Storytelling? What were you referring to there?

problem with that is 4 seasons, 4 championships instead of one. Doesn't feel as hyped or important as the 2011 season.

but last years format was terrible. people staying in pool play and the final championship in providence also rewarded those who stayed in pool play way too much. new format is way better.

that's why you tweak the points system, and some qualifiers.

The points system was fine. The fundamental problem was that people who had points didnt always attend MLGs (specifically the people who won the MLGs) so it resulted in the points from the first MLG being much more valube than they otherwise would have been.

I really wish they'd ditch the arenas and go back to just having 7-8 events across the country each year.

Wow, Fall Schedule...

I'm currently organizing a BarCraft in Cologne, Germany for Summer Arena... That's 11 days from today... And guess what: THIS is all information I got until now. The date.
At least they replied my mail and told me the time would be close to the one of former Arenas (starting at 12:00) so I could add the starting time to my facebook-event.

But I still don't know WHO's attending, or even HOW MANY players. How am I supposed to promote your (and my) event if I can't tell visitors, what they're going to see...?

Where did you get this information? Sounds great, so why doesn't MLG publish it on their Event Page!?

...but expect that to change a bunch as Koreans outside of the top 10 in GSL points try to qualify for WCS South Korea at the offline preliminaries on the same weekend.

Edit: Oops, opterown already mentioned it!
