Today it was anounced that the Swedish government owned television channel SVT will broadcast Dreamhack Eizo Tournament both on television and on their website SVT Play.
SVT has been part of Dreamhack for a couple of tournaments now, latest was at Dreamhack Winter when they were broadcasting from the Kinnarps Arena where HerO won the Dreamhack Winter Tournament.
Since SVT is expanding from only broadcasting Starcraft II on their website SVT Play, to also make it available in every household in Sweden, I guess SVT do see some possibilities within Starcraft 2.
SVT is not a commercial channel so it does not make money. They don't broadcast Starcraft 2 because they want to earn money. They do it because they see a huge interest of it and it's their job as a state owned channel, to broadcast what the swedish people wish to see.
Since SVT is a government owned channel, SVT is available to all households in Sweden. You do not need a special cable-tv package or anything like that to view SVT.
Update: From new sources it seems as if only Dreamhack Summer event is confirmed for television broadcast. Dreamhack Open Eizo will probably only be send online on SVT Play.

That's pretty sweet! Any way the people here in the states could see it?
|
OMG NICE!!!
I would prefer to see this in other countries first since i already know sweden is pretty big on esports (relatively) but it's good to know at least 1 foreign country (except maybe china) are speeding up the growth of esports :D
|
Wow. E-sports is getting pretty mainstream in Sweden.
|
|
That's not something you hear every day. Gogo esports!
|
This channel is also available (if you pay) in Denmark (and I would assume in Norway as well) so thats pretty cool !
|
Oh shit, that's awesome. If only all Scandinavian countries promoted e-Sports T_T
|
Wow, stuff just keeps getting better, with Stephano going to to korea, and then this!
|
|
:D This is absolutely amazing news. I love hearing how eSports is growing as a medium.
|

|

|
Amazing, Esports on TV. And its the Governments channel.
|
I am fucking proud of my country today. WOW

SVT are going to brodcast all the top 8 matches (from the quarter finals til the finals) this Dreamhack on their website, so I guess we can expect the same (or maybe more) next Dreamhack (which is the one that's going to be broadcasted on television).

Sweden is the mecca of e-Sports outside of Korea it seems! So many star players from there as well -_-. Im jelly.

Sweden just got better. Damn, this just got me superhappy.

Sweden is like mini-Korea in both player skill and in E-Sports growth! XD

So many great news today.
But I wonder how big will this actually be (if anyone knows this yet)?! Will it be broadcasted on the main channel which the average Swedish spectators watches?

SVT has two "main" channels: SVT1 and SVT2. They also have SVTb which is a childrens channel, and Kunskapskanalen/knowledge channel) which shows documentaries and such. SVTb and Kunskapskanalen share the same channel(children during morning/day and docu during evenings). In addition to these channels there is SVT24 where news are broadcast every hour and where a lot of recent minor sport broadcasts have been placed. I would say that it's reasonable to believe that DH will be put on SVT24.
ALSO... If anyone wants to contact SVT and tell them how awesome this is, go here: http://svt.se/2.81956/stall_en_fraga and then do as in my image here http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9448/screenshot2012042000114.png

SVT actually are pretty good at adapting this age of Internet. All of the sports commentators and experts are on Twitter and actively discussing matches and relating stuff. They also have a Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/SVTSport?ref=ts Can we dream about a SVT Esport site?

NRK did broadcast the playoff from HF league (css) for some years, first live on net, then on TV a couple of weeks later. To bad KongKord (the man behind it) got another job.

First of, use the search function, I already made a thread about this 5 hours before you.
Second, this doesn't really belong to SC2 generel yet, since there are no actual press release saying that it will be SC2 broadcasted on terrestrial TV, only that SOME tournaments will be shown.

Yes, DreamHack Stockholm Open this weekend will have the last 7 matches broadcasted on SVTPlay, but Dreamhack Summer will be broadcasted on Terestrial TV. How much of it and on which of their channel is not yet announced but it is still quite some time left untill that tournament. Dreamhack Open Stockholm is the starting signal for esports season 2012 that SVT will continue to cover and broadcast live from over the entire year. There will be more live broadcasted esport then ever before on SVT during 2012.

Even Korea hasn't managed to pull something like this. MBC game was cable channel, it's not on every TV. Congrats to Sweden. I wish Korea was this positive about gaming in general. ;_;

SVT is the man.
Taktik: basically it is one of the three channels which basically every household haves and regularly watches, so expect it to be the largest TV-channel in Sweden for roughly 1/3 of the time.

Can't tell you numbers but it's one out of 3 channels that are free of charge, so as long as u own a TV you can see it.

I think it's broadcasted at a great time to get more people into starcraft. Summer breaks will have started and all young guys (sc's main demographic) will be staying up late. Sure many will be out partying but I still think many that has never heard of the competetive seen will see this and become interested.
I actually think it's good if the casters are Swedish since it'll be easier for younger swedes to understand what's going on plus Swedish casters, from what I've seen, usually keeps it on a basic level and explains what's happening. I know a few friends that have stumbled upon SVT's online broadcasts and they liked it a lot.

You're right. Except Swedish casting sounds so weird and awkward.

How can TV get any better?
|
I can only dream when this day happens in America
|
Why is this amazing? This is just some lame reportage shit as usual. Only one game will be shown on TV, the grand final. Better than nothing, still not amazing.
Edit: Ok this is a little bit better than what I read at first. Its the "final games" they will air on tv. Probably semi aswell then.
|
the problem with casting in swedish has been the casters and not the language. The problem with the SM casters is that they are both play by play, that there swedish language skills isn't top notch and that english starcraft terms are used too often. If i can speak about the game with buddies then surely a swedish caster can do a decent job.

Finally, some great news this week.
Another reason why Swedes are better than us all. LOL.
|
I seriously hope they don't have Endarspire and Maven casting this, they're like the most awful casting duo I've ever heard throughout all games. I'd rather prefer if they would get some swedish player that didn't make the finals to cast it in Swedish. Perhaps ThorZaIN and MorroW? Maddelisk did one of the Esport-SM stops, she was quite good as well. Just not Endarspire and Maven.
|
Well played, Sweden.
I hope this is a crossover success there. I am still a firm believer that SC2 could appeal to broader viewing masses, and if this is successful that would be a great selling point for other countries and networks to give it a shot.

"Game ett har börjat." (Game one has started) - This is fine. They (sort of) do the same in tennis. "Gamet har börjat" (The game has started) - This is ok. A bit too Swenglish to blame it on gaming though. "Gamet har begint" (The game has startedt)" - No. Just no. Go away.

Don't worry about the swedish commentary. I wont be there. To my knowledge, noone else is going to either.

I think many people have started mixing you up with maven and endarspire, who are a really annoying combo, but I listened to your bw commentary and it was quite good. So I don't think you're the problem really. I think the main problem with Swedish casters is there chemistry, an example is esport-sm where most stops where casted by maven and endarspire, and BOTH of them did really bad. But when Maven casted with maddelisk at on of the recent stops, he was doing quite well.

Ehm, it's amazing because it's the first time they have ever done it, and a big step towards even greater things to come. You didn't expect them to dedicate and entire day of broadcasting to SC the first time they try it?

Sweden, the first country ever to broadcast Esports on international TV? I don't know about SouthKorea though, have they broadcast SC:BW on international TV or did they only do it on cable/none international TV.

I fucking love SVT!
This prolly wouldn't have happened if it was owned by private people (like som people want it to be), they would've most likely showed Jersy Shore or something else that makes you stupid.

That is so awesome! Sweden seems to love e-sports!! They're like the second country to broadcast e-sports after Korea right? Good to hear that non-gamers love to watch!!

But I wonder how big will this actually be (if anyone knows this yet)?! Will it be broadcasted on the main channel which the average Swedish spectators watches? Seems it hasn't been decided. Probably depends on scheduling of that given weekend and so on...

Will be benched in front of my TV. I would've been there if I hadn't graduated the day before it started =/ But gonna be awesome either way!
|
Not sure if it has been mentioned already, but SVT has actually broadcast e-sports before on national television. A few years ago, I don't remember which year exactly, I'm pretty sure they broadcast the CS 1.6 finals on SVT24.
In any case though, this is great news apart from the fact that they will have to go with the somewhat terrible Swedish casters. Oh well, that's a price you have to pay I suppose.

SVT is a public limited company and is owned by an independent foundation, Förvaltningsstiftelsen för Sveriges Radio AB. This foundation's members are politicians appointed by the government. It is funded through a special licensing fee, which is allocated by the Swedish Riksdag. SVTs regulatory framework is by Swedish law and has its board and chairman appointed by the Swedish government. It is now separate from, but was until 1979 part of, Sveriges Radio, which is the public radio broadcaster. Its status could be described as that of a quasi-autonomous non-government organization.
https://svt.se/2.60175/1.707564/ar_svt_statligt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sveriges_Television
TL;DR: SVT is NOT a government owned television broadcaster.

It would be SO SICK if they would broadcast everything from the english stream, but then everything would have to be almost fully scripted (so that you can produce subtitles) I guess T___T?

I just want to clarify even more how incredible this is. The Dreamhack finals will be on a TVchannel that everyone with a TV in Sweden can see, as well as many people in our nordic fellow countries. It will send the entire final with the English commentators.
I think this is completely amazing that I'll get to sit down with my old folks and watch eSports on national TV. Also note what the OP has already explained, SVT is not a commercially funded channel but instead funded by a sort of tax for everyone who owns a TV. Their job is to provide "public service", meaning a huge variety of programs. It is therefore so, incredibly important that we as a community (especially the Swedish community) give them credit for this. Make sure every TV you know of will be on when they send Dreamhack. Mail them to tell them how awesome it is. Americans, germans, frenchmen, koreans, all of you guys can send them a mail and explain how incredibly cool this is.
We need to make these companies understand that we as a community and viewerbase is highly loyal and giving. For example, if you're from abroad, ask them if you can somehow buy the channel, and so on, and so on. Show them how many people are interested in eSports.
Gogo community and show them our support!

That would be sick. Well I would not say that it will be swedish casters for sure. For all dreamhack events so far they broadcasted it on the web service with swedish commentators but on the last dreamhack they had the english stream straight up. This seemed to me to be a sign that people wanted the english commentary so they switched to that. Might be that they carry that on for regular tv.

Generally disappointed with how they handle this on TV. Having the finals of SC2, the most "friendly" game for the public in my oppinion (compared to Dota 2) in the middle of the night, not even starting at 00:20 on a Monday (Tuesdag, err). This delay hurts this oppertunity very much... And if SVT2 stops sending @ 01:00, that's just awful. Well lets see how this goes...

What does that have to do with SVT?
It's DH that have scheduled the damn thing.

Yes. SVT2 HD and you get 720p.

The quality on tv is unwatchable, it's like watching the GSL without premium, i'm really dissapoint, might aswell listen to the games on radio.

Uh, yeah, normal tv broadcasts are 360p. Watch SVTHD if you want better quality. And no it's not like the gsl, it looks fine for 360p.

Watching on SVT2HD is really the best viewing experience of starcraft I've had so far! If only the games would've been a bit more tense, I kinda feel that these games doesn't do as much to promote starcraft as they could have

Still cant get over how strange it feels to turn on the TV and see SC2 playing.

Was fun watching sc2 on the TV. I hope they continue to air these kinds of things in the future, I don't think the viewer numbers matter too much for SVT, they are none-profit right? They just air things as a service to the population.

"Fråga Doktorn" is huge in Sweden. Feels like one of those programs everyone over 60 watches to get their daily dose of hypochondria.
I think we just need to show some appreciation to SVT for doing this, but I don't know how...
|
SVT is aware of a big interest, that's why they are doing this, I doubt they expected huge numbers, especially at the time/day it aired. But i doubt they care about viewernumbers if this is something that will be aired this late.
|
im more afraid of the production value than the number of viewers..
its ok to not stick to the schedule and be a little unproffessional if all the viewers are dedicated fans watching streams, but if its gonna be broadcasted on tv atleast it should start as schedueled
|
I was lying down on the couch watching it yesterday. Pretty nice not to be home and still getting to watch dreamhack.

Here's a picture of the overnights ratings from for swedish TV
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/r1RZm.png)
What are the values? Tot rating = average # of viewers over the entire program length (in '000s) Tot reach = total number of people exposed to at least 3 minutes of the program (in '000s)
Numbers above the bars is the diagram is number of reached in each age category (in '000s).
So in essence, 211k uniques, 43k average basically.
|
|
Was it just me or was it extremely weird watching Incontrol at my TV? The way he presented him self seemed appropriate on stream, but I would expect different behaviour from a host on television. Not that there is anything wrong with it though.

To some degree it matters but svt are getting paid not to stare themselves at ratings. They are supposed to have a variaty of shows that appeal to different demographics even if it isn't that many of them. Naturally if no one watches it might not happen again but it's not the main focus point for these kinds of shows.
Also for this "genre" of shows the svtplay views will probably have a heavier focus than live viewers.

It was really weird (but awesome of course) to sit down in front of the TV to watch Starcraft. I remember when I started watching Brood War in 2008, I would've never imagined this.

I watched it from Norway, but unfortunately I don't have the HD channel so the quality wasn't that good. But still pretty awesome to see SC2 live on TV

It was really sweet being able to switch between the football and SC2 on the TV. Felt really weird... compared to watching it on a computer monitor with korean commentators~~

Out of a population of ~9.5 million. Imagine if they aired MLG in the states where there's ~313 million. Ee wouldn't even need nearly as high of a percentage to get respectable ratings.

I think those ratings are pretty good considering it was past midnight on a monday (tuesday) and it also had competition from SVTPlay and the Twitch streams.
|
Because of delays it didnt even START before 00:30 also.
|
If you read what the numbers said: SVT didn't have 211 views on DH if what we compare it to what you see in twitch. They had average viewership of 43K And 211K that did watch a part of it(at least 3min). This was during a quite long and late timeslot did they reach 6.1 of current viewer at that time
Edit: I think was it did drag out quite long before they announced part (Starcraft 2) started. I mean I did watch all weekend but had to go to sleep as to be up at 6:00 am. Feel they droped quite hard there. But It would be worse if they did kick out the Dota players tho.

Oh ok, but I presume viewing figures are from the broadcast as a whole?

As a related note (but just a tad OT) the local daily City Malmö-Lund had a few lines about DH today, talking about who the winner in SC2 was (Mana) and mentioning Sase and Naniwa as top finishing Swedes. So perhaps a breakthrough in general in media when those results are reported as sports results are?

I'm watching on my computer monitor, and everything looks like usual. Comparing it to the twitch stream there doesn't seem to be much difference in color at all.

I wouldnt mind if they put Ina Bäckström up as a host or interviewer for Dreamhack, she does a really good job.

I turned on my tv yesterday just to check it out, and I have to say, watching Starcraft on a mainstream, public, government-run channel was indeed a pretty surreal experience.
Really cool that SVT are taking small steps towards making e-sports available for a mainstream audience. Well done.

From http://www.mms.se/HotTop/hottop.asp , it looks like Dreamhack Open had 26k viewers on SVT24 from 20:00-23:05 and 16k viewers on SVT2 from 23:05-00:00.
The program on SVT24 after Dreamhack, DET LJUVA LIVET I ALASKA, only had 14k viewers.

I'd guess alot of old people watched whatever was on svt2 before dreamhack and left the box on. 2382 60+ viewers strongly indicate something like this.
I have no idea how that site works or collect data so I'm just guessing.
