War3 isn't doing well, but RTS as a genre is not doing well in China, and War3 still has a way bigger following than SC2. It is not just War3 squads being dropped anyways, but War3 and SC2 squads. That is why so many of them are going to DotA and not SC2. Also because a lot of them don't enjoy SC2 as much as they enjoy DotA (or in the case of TH000, he only likes War3 and doesn't intend to switch at all). RTS is on its way out in China, imo.

RTS games are on their way out everywhere. But there is a nostalgia factor with SC that keeps it alive in the West and Korea; no such thing in China.

For the games industry, this is the age of MMOs, MOBAs, and social games.

You're right, I was rather trying to point out that Lyn has been focusing on sc2 lately, not the other way around. But most chinese pros and commentators seem to agree that wc3 is fading away. Since sc2 never was successful I'd rather say it's on an uprise, considering NSL and the recent lifetime subscription option in China (which seems to have recieved positive response from the chinese). But then again, you're right.

@ Azarkon: I would argue that nostalgia is keeping War3 alive in the Chinese tournament scene. I really think this will be its last tournament year, but I won't be surprised if it hangs on for 1-2 more years.

It is perhaps better to say that Lyn plays SC2 except when he doesn't; he splits his time 50/50 between SC2 and Chinese right now. I'm interested to know if he'll play War3 in G-League and StarsWar (Korean quals haven't been announced yet afaik, but Focus, Lawliet, Believe, and Luci will probably participate at least).

At G-League season 3 (January) Lyn only participated in SC2, I dont know but I feel his focus has shifted to sc2 a lot more than last year.

PanDa told him to play SC2 in G-League last time, from what I know. At least last year, he said that he finds War3 more fun than SC2, but that his plans depended on what tournaments are available when.

He's probably just playing what he's told/what he has a better chance of winning.

Stuff like this makes it so hard for eSports to break into the mainstream, hoping for the best.

I fiind it worrying that the scene is so fickle. WC3 was pretty big, maybe not CS-big or Quake-big but still, how can it just die off so quickly? Quake and CS have been on life support for a while now but they are still around nonetheless.

Man I feel bad for Lyn
I remember when he was showing the most promise of the former WC3 Top players early on.
I really wish a foreign team would pick him up but it seems like he really wants to stay in China so hopefully, either way, he find a new team soon.

RTS may be on the way out, but it's the game quality and competition that is doing it. It's still by far the best genre for spectating, as SC2 has shown; it's just that games like DOTA2/LoL/WoW are better crafted to get people hooked. If HoTS/LotV elevate SC2's gameplay to BW level then it'll easily exceed LoL in terms of spectators.

LoL is still a sub-par game to spectate, people just like to follow a competitive game they play - look at the WoW 'esport', or the CoD scene. RTS is still the only genre that gets people to watch who don't play.
