For international flights the rule is 2 hours minimum. I used to work at an international airport for a major airline and I can assure you that 30 minutes is not enough. I question you working at an international airport. You don't check in at the gate, you check in before security at the airline kiosk OR you check in online at home. You have to check in at the airport kiosk if you have luggage. The gate is where you board the plane after getting through security/check in. If you arrive at the gate 30 minutes before departure that's cutting it close since boarding is normally 20-30 minutes before departure but you will be fine. Select's mistake was trying to check in at the airport instead of at home + having checked luggage. Arrive an hour before your flight (to get through security) is MORE than enough for a typical flight IF you can go straight to security and not check anything.

Or she didn't realize that Select just had to leave, not having his luggage with him wouldn't be a big deal. He probably could have gotten on the flight if he had volunteered to not have his luggage with him.

Still, that's why you don't leave only 2 hours before flight time...
