A flight boards about 20-30 minutes before its departure. As long as you have no checked luggage then you can just walk on up to like 5 minutes before the flight. I don't understand exactly what happened here. As as long Select was IN the airport before his flight left there is no reason for the employee to let him on his flight. Unless they overbooked the flight and he didn't check in the night before or something like that? It sounds like he was trying to check in at the airport which you should never do, always check in before you get there. If you want to be safe you should always try to be there two hours in advance for short flights, and three hours for long flights. Something can always happen on the way, and airports can be unreasonable crowded. If you aim to be at the airport 40 mins in advance, and you have to travel a long distance to get there, there's way too many things that can happen to you. Car accidents are standard and they happen every now and then. If you are planning your flights in a way where a traffic jam means you won't catch your flight you're doing something wrong. It really sucks to miss a flight due to a car accident but leaving two hours in advance is by no means enough if you are traveling through a lot of traffic and want to be safe.

However, if you go to the airlines website, you can find the actual cut-off times for checking in and checking baggage. Usually it's more like an hour for international flights. well usually you have to be in the airport 2 hours before the flight, not leave 2 hours before your flight... But ye sad and really unlucky Edit: as a wise man once said, if you never miss a flight, you're spending too much time in airports.

Best practice is to check-in online to not depend on them and be able to embark as long the airplane doors have not closed.

I dunno I'm always really paranoid of missing a flight because it's such a huge hassle if you do (like this story) Select obviously got really unlucky but for myself I actually don't even sleep the night before a flight because a) im paranoid i'll miss it and b) I head there super early like 4 hours early so it's not that bad I can rest before boarding and sleep while on the plane so the trip seems like its over quickly(sleep is a time machine!). I've never missed a flight and don't really mind flying at all ![]()
