Criticism is allowed. Undue flaming is not. Take a second to think your post through before you submit.

Bans will be handed out.

Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either.

very weird decision, given the fact there will be other free tournament at the same time (almost)

I wouldn't pay $20 unless it was the top 32 players (that means Koreans) competing for over $100,000 over a month (at least) span.

Not only that, it means in the future they can put more prize money into the scene.

We don't know that
and seriously? if I am asked by my fd to borrow $2-$5 4 times a year, what kind of impression do you think he is going to leave me? I would prefer having friends that can sort out their own finance and more organised.

plus you think people are over reacting to a 20 bucks? That's not for you to decide. People react according to their situation, not your situation. Not everyone wants to save up 20bucks for something that used to be free. I for one hate it as I can only watch may be 5 matches overall.
Is this pricing model even well-designed? How about those gold members that got screwed?

In this economy I wouldn't be surprised if someone needed a few dollars at some point in the year. I mean I really only ask what the money is for. If my friend needed a few dollars and said "Hey man, I need a few dollars to be able to pay to watch this huge event that I'm really excited for, can you spare a few dollars?" I'd get out my wallet and grab a few dollars (depending on how much I have) and lend him the money. I mean I work full time so I have a bit more money than others do but I'm not an ass who is going to say "Tough luck close friend, you should've gotten a job or should find another hobby."

We were spoiled with free stuff. But if you want better quality stuff you should expect to pay more. That's life in a nutshell.

better quality stuff doesn't equal to you need to pay more.
let's compare it to other real life sport then?
Do you need to pay to watch the world cup on TV? As far as I know, other than 3D ones, you don't.
Same with almost all other sports that I know of.

Gaming teams need sponsors and sponsors want viewership and more attention. Do you think this will help the growth of esport?
Now that you have to be:
1) willing to pay the 20 bucks
2) hope that you have a whole weekend free to catch all the $20 worth of content

If my friends come up to me and ask for the money, sure I would lend him once or twice. But you know what, I would be the tough friend who will talk to him about it. Because I for one would never ask my friends to constantly lend money to me, I don't treat them like an ATM.

well i'm definitely not paying $20, will just check liquipedia for the results. The Assembly player list looks awesome anyway + more chance of a foreigner win. So it'll still be a fun-filled weekend.

and yet hundreds of thousands of people are willing to pay 25$ monthly to watch 6 10 minute fights for UFC. Amusing how everyone in eSports wants it free, the best of everything, and always available.

I pay for the GSL just so I can see the best in the world, and I supported NASL season 1....but that is that.

If the e-sport model of choice is PPV then it will likely remain a niche market. MLG arena isn't really that interesting to me...in fact its sort of the camel that broke my wallet as I think I will wait until HOTS to watch anything but GSL which is more than enough content.

Why would I pay for MLG, I really don't see a compelling reason? Inferior players, inferior casters, and a history of inconsistency. The business model makes no sense to me and I appear to be their target audience. Bye MLG I deleted all your bookmarks.

Just because hundreds of thousands of people like getting ripped off to watch two meatheads smash their faces in, doesn't mean that everyone else is so inclined.

I'm not gonna pay it. I'm already a gold member and always short on time so i just dont realy care.
I'm just a litle bit sad that they dont seem to care about anyone from europe watching at all. Moving even the european qulifiers in the middle of the night and now charging for the main event.

good luck with the upcoming shitstorm

After thinking about it. This is just a sign that I need to be doing other stuff with my time than watching SC2 streams all weekend long. Sad that it took a $20 PPV model to make me realize that. I seriously watch way too much SC2.

I'm paying for the GSL and I did pay for the MLG silver before. I'm a poor student and I can't afford this so you just lost a viewer.

Um, will there still be a free stream of any kind of quality or will it only be viewable if you buy PPV ?

UFC is different. Just because UFC pulled it off doesn't mean anything can pull it off. It's amusing how UFC is the "go-to argument" for this.

There is better competition elsewhere, I don't have to pay $20 to watch the top level (and MLG Arena isn't even top level) players compete. I can watch MLG championship circuit, GSL, DH, IPL, Home Story, etc etc. UFC is strictly controlled by UFC. They provide all the content and they control it all and the fights are events, not something that happens every day like in SC2.

Almost every other sport can be watched for free. Football, Basketball, etc are all FREE. Why don't you compare SC2 to them? Or the fact that SC:BW was wildly popular in Korea without PPV. UFC is only able to pull off their business model because the sport-fighting was already popular and established before UFC was around. They had a huge audience to pull in from. StarCraft is working on gaining that big audience still, and adding PPV only cuts into it, not helps it.

I wouldn't say they're useless. You can still use it to watch the Championship Events in HD.

However, as far as the Winter Arena goes, yes your Gold Membership is useless.

I'm currently of the mind that this is extremely fraudulent (if you disagree, go back a page or two for my reasons why, with evidence).

very cheap move by mlg. i feel exactly like virgilsc2, this is total misinformation.
gsl tried the ppv thing with aol and it didnt work out, and i predict the same for mlg.
i personally dont want to pay for the latest increase in production value and the "new Premium streaming experience page". i want good players, good casters and a working stream.

Pretty much. The people who bought Gold Membership are the people are who willing to spend money on SC2. It would be retarded from a business viewpoint to not take money from the people willing to pay again. It sucks but that's business.
