Hello! This is a test episode of "Uncensored" (working title) with Hwanni the Translator. I wanted to get some feedback from the communities around SC2 before I progress forward with the idea.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqd2wOuVny4
Show idea is just a simple interview show but outside the realm of strictly SC2 (channeling actors studio or your favorite CNN / NBC / ABC / whatever interview).
All questions asked in this interview are completely off the cuff and have not been pre- prepared what so ever. The production value of the show is bad for good reason and literally this is a 10 minute idea brought to fruition. Let me know what you guys think.
We cover a lot of topics such as Hwanni's parents thoughts on ESPORTs, SC2 vs SC1, League of Legends in South Korea, Nestea, WCG, and more stuff.
Please let me know what you guys think via the comments and follow twitter.com/Hwanni_ to support him
Just over halfway in right now, this is really interesting, Hwanni is such an informed, cool guy. Really happy with all the youtube content you are putting out JP
I really love this format (although I think it would only work with talkative people... might have problems if the interviewee is fairly taciturn), and the questions were great ! Having this kind of extra information from people who work within the scene (management, organizers, etc), I think is needed to help people understand what's really going on. Thanks for doing this
I didn't think I would listen to the whole thing before I went to bed, but I did, because it was really interesting. Looking forward to more! Great job!
The gradient is really awesome, no need for graphics! White to green, that was artsy and stylish.
Issues, well I guess further shows would be more prepared. You can go far just on the knowledge you have on the scene in general, but grasping for the name of something you want to talk about and getting saved by Hwanni getting what you are going for can't really be counted on each time with other guests.
As far as production goes, time stamps for different subjects is always nice.
I liked it. So, when will the drunken Uncensored with NesTea be?
I still remember watch an interview Hwanni did with GotFrag back when he was the team manager of eSTRO ... 4 years later still loving his interviews but he english is a lot better now a days ^_^

For some reason I remember Tyler saying that TheMarine used to be his favorite player lol
Is this going to be a sort show based around extended one on one interviews with people and players in and around the SC2 scene? Developing stories and introducing people like this to the community that otherwise are not in the spotlight would awesome. Style after Inside the Actors Studio with James Lipton and you could start a kind of biography archive for notable people and contributors in eSports.
There are a lot of current event type shows, or shows talking about the players and the game, but not really and that go into depth on specific individuals. Grabbing some early people from BW or organizers and contributors to SC2 would be really interesting. Even expand to notable people who helped advance the scene in general through other games like Quake and CS would be neat.
I'm kind of picturing a page broken down by game, with a list of names of people next to maybe a short statement about who they are (perhaps in a collapsible spoiler type bot for the sake of space), and their names linking to the video. I guess in an ideal scenario if it became robust enough, people could use it like how people us TLPD for players stats, but for information on notable people/players.

Never really heard anyone who knows what they are talking about say that it is generally accepted. Seems to just be an invention of the TL BW community.
Man Hwanni so baller, thanks JP, I like the idea and content.
I think it would work for both lesser known relevant people in the community such as Hwanni, but also for common figures as well, hearing the story of the players we see all the time would be incredible as well.
Yeah Hwanni! I always liked the way he would sometimes call the bullshit of people he was translating for. This is was very informative since the language barrier often times means it is hard to get solid info on what is happening behind the scenes in South Korea.
I like it! I would appreciate if you could go more into the personal aspect of whoever you invite. not only their SC2 career. would be nice to get to know our heroes better.

Cool Idea, sitting down and picking Hwannis brain is a service to all kinds of ESPORTS fans.
Its important that people who want to put a lot of their time and effort into this whole ESPORTS thing understand how other people have made it as team and event managers and content producers. Thats why I really like the personal questions about Hwannis family and earlier work in ESPORTS. I don't think anyone else is really asking those kinds of questions so I hope that stays a part of the show even if its not the main focus.
Hwanni was a great interview object. I liked his insight in different subjects like why he thinks Starcraft 2 has a moderate popularity in China. I especially love his NesTea stories!
saw it was 43 minutes so i made some popcorn and got around to watching it :> and i really loved it. Hwanni is a great guest for a test-run of this new show. he's such a brilliant guy, and it was really nice to hear you pick his brain for a little while. some things that stood out to me that i loved hearing:
- his story of the caster in WCG. just an amazing story of the dedication that the caster had for the game and how seriously he took commentating the games.
- that he went to university and has a degree! lol, had no idea.
- him going out to drink with NesTea. god i'm so jelly ._.
and there were other small gems of info in there (guy wanting the Moon autograph lol). overall, i thought it was awesome to get this much from Hwanni. he's an amazing human being, really loved it <3 hope you keep pushing forward with this idea, JP. i remember you got CatZ to do the art for SoTG a while back, you should have him do some more for this show (not that i don't love your paint gradients). i love the premise (and hope you get NesTea as you suggested :>)
Really great show JP, I love the format too. Using Hwanni to translate for some Korean progamers or coaches is a great idea, it would be really interesting.
Really nice show, pls continue it. I really, really enjoy the concept getting such a inside perspective into the korean scene and also being able to take advantage of all the esports knowledge Hwanni has is just amazing. Also can't wait for other people being on the show giving their insight. Uncensored is fine with me, but I don't really care about names in the first place. Can't wait till you have real graphics though, the camera angles were really bad...
LoL as the true heir to BW confirmed T_T Blizzard really really really really fucked up their approach to Korea for SC2 and has almost completely gimped its chances of being big.
Basically the same interview theme show, but the guest and jp having a drink of their favorite liquor. Keep it rather casual and get more in dept with the guest's bio and background. Less of the generic questions asked, like the ones you would get at an event and more like two pals having a drink and shooting the breeze talking abt the Esports scene and life.
I'm super excited for this insider show. I think it is a huge issue that Koreans are often too "faceless" since we are laking information due to the language barrier.
On January 25 2012 22:21 Headnoob wrote: So what i got from this, china plays a lot of bad games?
PC Cafes only supporting shitty games with bad graphics + widespread viral marketing with some entertainment idol cheesily dressed up as one of the characters = Chinese gamers lapping it up.
I like the interview but the title is bad. It's kinda misleading and it reminds me too much of the F Slasher title where there's the hint at controversy (to attract an audience) but there really isn't any. Would be better suited if you were to interview Rekrul lol.

But then we would never get to see Leenock
speaking of which "After Providence we got all the korean players and went and got a drink" Leenock is underaged Hwanni that's illegal (jk)
Great show! Keep doing them, I'd watch this every time. Gives great insight to the korean scene, you should get one EU representative also, then we could have a global show?
I'd dub it "e-raising questions" You "raise" a question to somebody within the scene and by getting an answer the question is effectively "erased". And "e-" because of the e-sports flavor.
Just my thoughts, no native speaker, though, so it might sound silly to you English speakers
Feedback: Big fan of your SotG show and if you keep this up, I might become an even bigger fan of this format!
I like this show You should try to get new people (that never go on shows and that we, the foreign scene, never interact with) on the show like Hwanni. We really learn alot of new stuff and its fun :D Maybe bring on korean players/korean casters/ Tasteless/ etc. It could be fun.
if there's 0 production value and absolutely 0 pre-production, what's the point of spending my time watching you ad lib and otherwise make up (read: fake) content which may or not be applicable to things related to me
you compare the show to something like inside the actor's studio when it sounds like its the exact opposite
buy my interest and i will gladly sell it to you. this neither indulges or entices me. it sounds awful, tbh
edit2: Remember you'll have to add in the MP3 info yourself/ To do this add it to your iTunes > Right click on the file > Get Info. Fill in as many or as few boxes as you want. (I just add Artist so I can find it quicker than scrolling through my 120000 songs (not an exaggeration))

It was an insightful interview with someone who knows alot about the Korea esports scene. The fact that there is no production doesn't bother me as long as the content is good and it is, this was also a test run and if JP decides to keep doing these I'm sure he will step it up, this was something he just decided to try on his spare time so how can you expect high production value .
Thank you for this JP, keep it up, also hwanni is the man!

of course an interview with someone as connected as hwanni will be good, pre-production or not. but how many hwannis are there, really? maybe 5 or 10? that's the problem with this type of stuff, and it's all over the place
the 5 or 10 episodes that write themselves are easy. other won't be, and they'll suffer amazingly from it

What do you mean fake? That doesn't even make any sense.
I liked it, very interesting topics were discussed. Feels like uncut might be better description than uncensored because its not about drama/gossip/swearing, but rather its about real information that isn't edited and is all one interview.

How is he making up content? You're a truly a moron if all you care about is how pretty the presentation is rather than the content that it has. Do you buy games or watch movies just because they look good or because they have depth to them? What's to stop someone from creating completely fake news that looked nice? Seems like that would please you just fine...

I am not sure about the show yet. Would have to see more of it to make up my mind, but i will definetly tune in for another episode. For this episode ... its hwanni, i could listen to that guy the whole day, so i didnt focus on much else.

What's wrong with you. Hwanni is someone that knows A LOT about the Korean ESPORTS scene so hearing what he has to say is very insightful. JP also mentioned that this was a test episode which means no production etc.
Interesting interview JP. You put alot of really great content out there for us fans and its much appreciated. Your laid back attitude works so good as a host for talk shows. I hope you can take this concept and steer it to where you feel you get the most real information out of the interviews. The impression I got from this one was that Hwanni was really honest in his answers and it gave atleast me a little insight into the koreans "general views" that only a local can share. I don't know if you plan on inviting different guests all the time or if you decide to invite some regulars with connections to the current subject you/the community are interested in but don't be afraid to use the same guests, I wouldn't mind it at all if hwanni came back on to spread some knowledge.

Just in case there isn't an MP3 release you can always drop the video url into here and get an mp3, gotta download the mp3 though I believe. http://www.video2mp3.net/
i liked it, having a show with a korean living in korea who can speak good english is a a niche thats not filled well enough yet. i always like hearing korean perspectives and not needing a translator makes it better (although id enjoy some korean guests also translated by hwanni).
Like i said before i really like hwanni a lot. But the most interesting interview right now would be with Coach lee for sure. And I haven't read anything in his defence at all. But i might be just wrong here. If someone knows any thread/interview with coach lee recently just pm me.
Pretty good show ! Gonna re-watch it tomorrow, coz I was keep getting distracted while watching it today the first time, but I've loved all the things I've heard in it.
Really liked the show. One show that has the same vibe I feel is "Meet the Press" on NBC. It's a fantastic political show (atleast it was when the late Tim Russert was still hosting it) and I feel like with the right preparation and right interview questions (thoughtful, hard hitting questions), JP might be able to do something with it. I liked this pilot episode and maybe in part because Hwanni didn't dodge any questions and was fairly candid with his answers. I would like JP to continue this show. Maybe host it biweekly to reduce oversaturation and increase quality of interview questions.
Maybe eventually, JP could branch off and interview other people in the esports community (maybe CEO of riot games even?). I say this because for anyone who watches sports and listens to sports podcasts, Bill Simmons has a podcast with ESPN called the B.S Report and originally, it was a podcast that talked about sports but in recent years, he talks about pop culture items (talked with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and even had Louis CK on his podcast as well). I honestly feel like JP can really take off with this show and turn it into something really special.
I really like the idea of it, but I'm wondering whether every episode will have JP + Hwanni, or whether JP plans to get a different guest each week? If its the latter, I think JP may run out of guests quick.

I like this idea. Go with questions that range really, really broad and not always pertaining to starcraft. Talk about growing up, other hobbies, life where they live, how they got into esports, funny stories, whatever. Doesn't need to have drinks, but it adds a fun element if the guests agree. Just a relaxed interview more about them, then about their recent performance or event.
Really enjoyed the "off the cuff" feel to the show, felt more like a conversation between two friends rather then a premeditated interview, which I feel is more organic and entertaining. Adding a list of what was talked about when in the video would be helpful for people who want to skip over a particular topic.
Overall solid, original feeling content that I would love to see more of in the future.
Respect to Riot games for what they are doing with LoL. In fact every developer is supporting the e-sports component, MW3m DotA2 etc.. are all having massive tournaments.
Blizzard on the other hand, demands loyalties from OGN and MBC, when all other companies are spending so much on promoting the e-sports aspect of their games.
Good job Blizzard for destroying Starcraft in Korea, good job indeed.
