After his last relapse, MVPsC was recently discharged from hospital 4 days ago. Now he has relapsed again except this time on his left lung. This is a really unfortunate series of continuous setbacks for such a talented young progamer.
His recent tweet is translated below: ke Ah ke Now it's the left lung? Goddamnit --
He will have to be admitted to hospital again through Christmas and miss out on IU at the Blizzard Cup finals which he seemed to be looking forward to. You can send messages of support to him at http://twitter.com/#!/MVPsC And just like last time here is a template for some relevant Korean phrases if you'd like to use them:
힘내세요 - Stay strong 화이팅 - Fighting 얼른 회복하세요 - Get better soon 빨리 나아요 - Get better soon (version 2) 사랑해요 - I love you 응원 할께요 - I'll support you 너무 잘생겼어요 - You are so handsome

This is so sad. I am such a huge fan of his. He is so good and has had so many setbacks. Starcraft aside, this is serious business, I hope he gets better so he live a normal life and not have to worry about lung collapse. After he is recovered, then we can start talking about his great future in Esports.

sC is very young and he is having lung problems?Could it be due to genetics or he just have a weak body?

>.< Poor guy! Hope he recovers swiftly. If he relapsed once that would be horrible, and even more so that he relapsed twice, maybe he needs to find a different hospital?

Poor guy. Like everyone here, I hope he recovers.

I really hope he can recover fully, such an incredible player. Would someone who is a medical professional give us some information about this? Is this common with Pneumothorax to have repeated relapses in both lungs?
|
ahh man poor guy get well soon

Can't believe this. I'm going to try to go visit him

I really like him too. Such an aggressive player he's one of the ones i really want to see succeed.

|
Sucks... I wish he would get reinvited back to Code S as soon as possible. =[
|
Damn, this sucks, get better sC! Been cheering for you as my terran whenever i saw you(except at LG finals vs DRG)
|
With a history of many relapses, sC might want to get a surgical pleurodesis, even if it is just more invasive. Hopefully its just a really unfortunate coincidence that he'd get a pneumothorax in one lung after another.
Anyone know if he smokes, or has some lung condition? Maybe some joint problems? Is he really really tall for his age? If this keeps on happening, there might be something serious behind all of this...
Hope he makes a swift recovery...
|

SC fighting..this time IRL.. I will pray to God . Keep fighting buddy.. you b alright!!!

People CAN die from a pneumothorax, but a relapse is usually not very dangerous. I've had a single relapse after my initial pneumothorax which was very bad(the first, not the relapse) and after that I chose to have surgery. The blebs don't grow back or anything once they're removed. The problem becomes if you have these lung issues on one side, they're pretty much guaranteed to be on the other side, which you can do nothing about aside from having surgery to fix the potential collapse should it happen in the future. Most minor relapses are just taken care of by giving the patient oxygen or hooking them up to a pump for a few hours. More severe cases would include a chest tube for a short time being(several days to a week) and then surgery. Hope he feels better, it's definitely not fun and a year later I still struggle with the problems.
|
If he has a bilateral pneumothorax his life could be in danger.
take care my friend
|
Hope he gets well soon! Too bad he misses IU too ;(
|
Can someone try to organize IU sending him a get well card or something?
|
Potentially life threatening but easily manageable. Wouldn't expect any ill-effects relating to it.
|
Man this sucks, sC is such an incredibly talented player. If his health keeps up he can definitely keep up with the best. Hoping you get better and stay healthy sC!!

Same thing happened to my big brother a few years ago. His two lungs are now glued to his body, or something like that.
You can die from a Pneumothorax but it's unlikely and the best part is that there isn't a lot of down time after the surgery so he'll be back in no time !
|
OP thanks for this ^_^ I love that this community cares so much.

so much talent being repeatedly set back ;_; i really hope sC gets better, hes seriously one of the best terrans in korea and every time he seems to be getting back to his peak, his condition worsens somehow and it really fucks him over. so sad. sC fighting!

Jeez, I really hope he gets well soon! He is such a talented player :/
|
I hope he improves his condition. I think we won't see him in the next Code S T.T Get better soon!
|
He is such a talanted Terran. I hope he returns soon and pwn every zerg.
|
Skinny people with longer bodies tend to have higher predisposition for spontaneous pneumothoraces, asians and especially Koreans tend to fit this bill more. A korean friend of mine had 3 total lung collapses within a few months of each other once in high school. Being an unfortunate victim of a pneumothorax myself, I wish MVPsC the best in his recovery and hope that the doctors don't need to resort to surgical procedures to prevent further collapses. As he gets older, if they don't do surgery to fuse his lungs to the thoracic cavity, his disposition to lung collapses will diminish, though. sC fighting!
|
I'm so sorry... will pray for him. Being healthy is something people don't appreciate at all, and seeing stuff like this happen make me to do less smoking or thing unhealthy.
|
I hope DRG visits this thread and shows/tells sC about all the people wishing him good luck.

I have had this happen to me on both lungs (not at the same time) and they happened in my teens. It's apparently quite common in young, tall, skinny people. The first time it happened I didn't get surgery and it relapsed about a month later, I've now had surgery on both lungs and it's been relatively fine.

Very unfortunate, he shows a lot of promise

GOM should get IU to visit him in the hospital imo
He'd be like "I was runner up in the LG Cinema 3D Special League" and she'd be all over it and they'd hook up

I haven't heard about both lungs collapsing yet though. My right lung collapsed twice (the exact same part), so the 2nd time I had to undergo surgery to fix the part that collapsed. It might actually be something serious if different parts collapse. Also, there was about a year and a half between the first and second time for me. For sC it's only a couple of months. Hope he recovers soon!

If he had marfan's I'm sure he'd know by now. Plus I never really thought of sc as... Tall?
In any case, hope he recovers soon!

Well, that's unlucky. He should have bullae resection surgery, if he can, and if this is the cause of his pneumothorax episodes (most likely). That should stop it from happening again.
On December 16 2011 17:25 GhostFall wrote: you know if both your lungs are collapsing, there might be an underlying reason. Most likely cause for repetitive spontaneous pneumothorax in a young male is bullae in the lungs. Common in tall, skinny men. As previously stated it can be corrected by surgery. Other possibilities are bad, but they're extremely unlikely, particularly if this is the only symptom up to now. In a young male the worst possibility would be Cystic Fibrosis, but he'd have other manifestations by now.

Wish him the best of luck. unlikely, most pneumothoraxes are spontaneous (occur randomly, tends to happen to skinnier, lankier individuals).

That really sucks, but seems like this isn´t too uncommon. A friend of mine had exactly the same , got already 2 surgeries and is still struggling with it. He´s also a pretty skinny guy like Sc, think that has something to do with it. Wish him the best and hope he can recover fully.

I have a question if you don´t mind: Did you feel more pain after you just woke up? Because a friend of mine had the same and is always complaining that he´s more in pain just after he got up. I just find that really strange.

Yea they usually happen to men and mostly tall skinny but you would think having two in such a short time could be something more than just his sex/height/weight.

It took me 5 minutes to identify the difference xD. Best of luck to sC, I'm sure he'll get better in no time; I looked at it for 3 minutes, even zoomed in on max, and was like "its either a mistake or hes trolling". Now that you posted I spend another two minutes with full zoom in and finally find it. T.T why korean has to be so difficult :p lol i found it in like 20 sec when i zoomed in but... else i didn't see it :D
also: get well soon sC!

Anyone have any news on how treatment is going for him?

Wow, that sucks. I've never been a fan of sC but it's really sad to hear about his lung problems. Hopefully he doesn't have another relapse, because if he does it might continue to affect his SC2 competitive play.

Oh god that must be so painful, I just went to wikipedia and found the article on what a collapsed lung was
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumothorax
I'd imagine it feels like you're choking while breathing since you're not getting enough oxygen even though you can still "breathe"
I hope he gets well soon.

get well soon sC ! ♥ 힘내세요~~ ^^

It's more like being breathless - imagine after running when you're trying to catch your breath, only that's how you feel at rest sometimes.
Mine recurred a few times until I had surgery to fix it.
gl sC, you'll be ok
|
Get better sC!!!
I hope your play continues to inspire and this doesn't affect your performance next GSL.
|
I had 2 pneumothorax myself, in 2007 and 2008, and it's really painfull.
The cure is very painfull too, I spend 2 days on a fucking bed, not allowed to move because i had a thorasic drain in my breath.
A stranger come to wash your own body, even your ass and your dick, because you can't do it by yourself. You have back pain because you stay lengthened all the time, never go out, never walk, just stay there weak and powerless.
I have very bad remember of that disease.
The only good thing is morphine, you stop having pain, you even stop thinking, you just sleep all day long, pretty cool
Gogo SC, don't carry heavy things, gains weight, stop smoking if you do, and everything gonna be ok for you !
EDIT ; And if your as lucky as me, you may have a very cute girl, house surgeon, giving to you a massage in the middle of the night in order to relieve your back pain :D
|
This is so disheartening, I wish him the best of luck.
|
Poor sC....im not a big fan of his personally but you never want someone to have chronic health problems (and man having your lung collapse is really, really not good...)
I would almost be surprised though if it wasn't some kind of genetic weakness/hereditary problem, seems very strange to have double onset of pnuemothorax issues.
|
Hoping for the best for sC, kid's too good at SC2 when he's on his game for the scene to lose.
힘내세요

This is really unfortunate. =[ Best of luck to you, sc!

Possibly weird question, but does anyone know how/if it works similarly in Korea? Can you deliver letters to patients in hospitals? He tweeted something that google translate butchered, but kinda seems like he's sad/pissed/annoyed that he's spending the holiday in the hospital (It translated christmas, I assume it's something like that). I think it'd be nice to send him a holiday/get well card, but it would be an expensive thing for him to not get.
What about the MVP house, would they get one there? If anyone with some more info could PM me I'd appreciate it. I'm going to be a bit proactive myself and try to figure it out, but if you saved me some time I'd be preeeeeeetty pumped.
|
This kind of thing makes me proud of the sc2 community. I'm sure he'll appreciate the support.
|
Best wishes and get well soon sC!

|
|
Get well soon!
Does this mean he'll be able to carry an ultralisk in his lung?
|
|
Man I know the treatment for that and i just dont want to think about the amount of pain a chest tube is to release the air!

응원 할께요!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks for him, he's been extremely unlucky with his health D:
Hopefully sC gets better ASAP!
|
If his immune system is this messed up maybe it's not a good time to keep playing? Guy's priorities are not straight, you better love him for what he does.
|
TT, hes like the best SC2 player, its a shame to see him struggle with his health...
|
Lol at the korean phrases, will save those for future reference. big support for sc, hope to see him back soon
|
|
Had pneumothoraxes before on both my lungs, hope that his treatment goes well without anymore complications!

this may sound insensitive, but im curious about pneumothorax,
is it fatal, terminal? or can it be cured

Spontaneous pneumothorax is normally mild, meaning that the area of the lung compromised isn't too large, so it isn't really fatal or dangerous, many patients take weeks to consult because chest pain isn't too severe, while others have more pain and breathlessness.
In other cases, mostly after severe trauma, a pneumothorax can collapse a lung completely, and compress the organs in the mediastinum, like the trachea and the heart. This can produce a circulatory collapse and death, this is known as tension pneumothorax, and it requires emergency treatment. This is extremely unlikely to happen in spontaneous (or primary) pneumothorax.

Stay Strong Recover and come back in good health. Everything else comes secondary!

Wishing you a speedy recovery sc!

Poor guy. Some people just have the worst luck with their health. Hope he gets better soon and this wont affect his play to much. Ill throw out a 'sc fighting!!!' for good measure.

^ They basically put a tube with 2d cm. into your lung and pump out the blood / air and what ever is there.(The machine looks like the wather bong :D the worst part is that u cant even take a shit because of the pain and pressure) usually It takes 4 day. this is done in full consciousness and if it doesnt help they put another 2 tubes and use laser (I dont even know why but they do) and after this you should be ok in another 3 days. I know this because it happened to me an year ago. But I had no idea that u can survive it on the left side (cause of your heart) Be strong SC!

Serious question did this happen because of too much starcraft?

I hope you get better sC! your an amazing player!

Dammit why haven't I seen this sooner.
Get well soon sC!

Man I really love watching sC play, and his series against nestea was amazing. I really hope he can come back from this and regain his terran dominance soon!

sounds horrible gl to him so good at sc2!

:/ That stinks hope this will be the last set back. Get well soon and stay well.

I've had this condition, he needs to get his lungs scraped so the lungs don't collapse when there is a puncture. Both my lungs collapsed 8 times in 6 months before I had this procedure done. Not had one single collapse since.

Scraped? As in running a blade on the surface area of the lungs? Sounds gnarly.

Let me try to clear up some of the misinformation here. What sC likely has is primary spontaneous pneumothorax.
Pneumothorax is a condition where there is air in the chest in between the lung and the chest wall. This air gets there normally through small tears in the lung that leaks into this space.
Primary, as opposed to secondary, because there is unlikely to be underlying lung disease and the exact cause of it is unknown. However, this kind of pneumothorax happens most commonly in young males, normally with lanky builds. It is thought to be due to minor abnormalities of lung tissue structure. Most people outgrow this problem. However, it is pretty common for it to recur up till the late 20s in either lung.
This is different from secondary pneumothorax which occurs because of underlying lung disease such as COPD which may have bullae - large bubbles on the lung surface that can pop, causing pneumothorax.
Spontaneous pneumothorax as opposed to traumatic pneumothorax. Traumatic pneumothorax happends with severe chest trauma that may crack ribs and damage the lungs.
The treatment depends on how much air is trapped in the chest cavity. Small amounts of air are typical with primary spontaneous pneumothorax. Usually, the lung heals itself in a couple of days and the patient is observed in the hospital for a couple of days and given some oxygen. Some hospitals prefer to treat even the smallest amount of air by sticking in a chest tube just under the armpit under local anaesthesia.
Edit: What the guy above me talked about is pleurodesis. Its a procedure in which said space is obliterated by stimulating fibrosis to occur. This is done by mechanically irritating the lining of this space with rough pads. This can also be done with chemicals. In general, this is usually done for people with cancer in which fluid tends to accumulate in this space and cause a lot of discomfort. Its rare for it to be done for primary spontaneous pneumothorax as it can be overkill - unless these pneumothorax happen very frequently and cause a lot of distress.

As a victim of 2 pneumothroaxes (on the same lung) all I can say that it's not fun. I wish all the best for sC and hope that he manages a speedy recovery.

Get well soon!
Please recover your health fast. Health is the most important thing in the world.

Thoughts are with sC. Sad that he has so many relapses.
|
I've had that happen to me 6 times and it's not fun, it really hurts! Hope he feels better soon.
Do we know if it's Blebs or Restrictive Lung Disease?
|
|
aww poor guy, get well soon !
|
|

This makes me really sad to read. Any more recent updates? He's been tweeting a bit today. I can only read hangul, not translate it into english

yea Ive had a couple of spontaneous pneumo's aswell during college. I called my valves Bert and Ernie, they were my best friends for those 2 months. (when the bleb is to heal in a week supposedly), Relapses suck, but its not uncommon theres about a 25 percent chance roughly of a relapse following almost immediately and an even higher one of it happening again at some point in your life.
It really is quite painful aswell, personally I would skip my morphine doses because drugs like that scare me, but it basically makes you an invalid so take the painkillers !
and I think its just blebs, the thing is after your first pneumo yo can have other blebs on other parts of your lung that get missed in x rays, and when those pop doctors are like "Oh". Usually in an emergency they dont act as thorough because they want to fix you up as soon as possible. My first pneumo had multiple blebs so it needed surgery, second one healed on its on.
Get well soon !
