dear Julia, please stop "scrolling" TLO used to do it and Day9 laughed at him for wasting apm, watching your match against losira half the time you were just hitting your arrow keys instead of macroing. Feel free to rebind those arrow keys to yghj so if you still feel compelled to worry about perfect camera angles over mechanics then you can be more efficient XD

Please stay on topic. That has nothing to do with the "discussion" in this thread.

I get the impression that many of you who criticize the interviews and the spotlight, are under the impression that interviews/forum threads/whatever are in short demand and that they need to be rationed out to the most deserving so that they're not wasted on the undeserving. I would just like to point out that this, in fact, is not the case. There is actually an almost unlimited supply of interviews available, as long as someone actually bothers to do them. It's not the case that if someone gets interviewed, then it means that someone "more deserving" does not get interviewed. It simply means that there is one more interview out there.

If I wanted to, I could have found the lowest skilled first time MLG player and interviewed him. "How is it, being a Bronze player at MLG?". He could have told us that he just picked up SC2 and that he wanted to become a pro during the next two years. He could have told us what his first impressions of MLG was or whatever. I could call it "The birth of a progamer". It may have been interesting and perhaps, in two years' time, it might even prove to be a real jewel of an interview to look back on, if he did succeed. But did I do the right thing? Did Leenock suffer a terrible injustice when I interviewed a bronze player instead of him? Was I somehow subtracting from his achievement by interviewing someone else? What if I walked up to the guy and thought about interviewing him, but didn't bother? Would Leenock still have suffered the same terrible injustice of having one interview less, or would it be okay, as long as that other interview did not exist?

The same goes for forum threads. If I create a forum thread for my "Birth of a progamer interview", putting real effort into it making it a proper OP, would it be an injustice to Leenock? Should I instead have created a forum thread for Leenock? How would the injustice have been scaled if I thought about creating a forum thread and didn't? Would that have been okay, or would I still have mistreated Leenock, because I actually thought about it?

Moreover, what's the correct ratio of spotlight a player should receive and who should police the media so that everyone gets what they deserve? I'm sure there are GM's out there who haven't gotten any media attention, but for example idra has gotten lots. Should idra be banned from getting more attention until everyone else with the same skill has gotten the same amount of attention, in the name of justice? And what is the minimum threshold required to be interviewed and what's the correct ratio? Is it 1 interview at Master level for every 10 interviews at GM? Perhaps 1 interview at Diamond for every 100 interview at GM? Has someone calculated the ratio of GM interviews to Diamond interviews? Perhaps Ailuj's is the 1 Master out of 100 GMs, so that it is, in fact, a legit interview. Or should all sub-Master interviews be banned altogether?

Please tell me why everything I wrote is not the way you really think, because it sure looks like that. Then explain to me how it's somehow bad that people put their energy into different things instead of everyone focusing on the one top thing all the time. I really don't see how the existence of an interview for a Diamond player somehow hurts the top players, so please explain that as well, especially taken into account that if the interviewer didn't interview Ailuj, she wouldn't have interviewed an unknown GM instead, so the end result would have been one interview less.

As for Ailuj and back to topic: Based on the interviews I really like her. She seems to have plenty of self-confidence, a serious attitude towards gaming and she chooses her words well when it comes to ... sensitive topics. She seems to have good potential for being a role model and inspiration for other girls to take the game more seriously. I hope she'll be able to improve and go to future MLG's and kick some ass.

sigh

I happen to have known julia through sc2 for a long time now and consider her a good friend of mine.

She didn't start streaming thinking "I want to be famous" or "I want a lot of viewers/fans to watch me." She streamed because she fucking wanted to, and had a good time interacting with her viewers, which at the time amounted to about 5-10 people on average.

She wants to get good at the game. She doesn't merely want to be something for you to look at, which I'm sure is obvious by now from her interviews. She went to MLG to play the game. She didn't ask to get put up against losira, and she didn't ask to be put on the main stage. She didn't ask for any attention whatsoever. Then one day she put a webcam on her stream. Deal with it. Like I only watch IdrA because he has been working out with EG house lately -.-

If you're not so great at the game and if she is getting more attention than you are and you are pissed off about that, go update your live journal or xanga about it. Everyone here who takes gaming seriously or actually understands why people go to events to compete sees right through you. You're throwing shit for absolutely no reason, and what is the result? Some one who is probably exhausted from all of this attention + interviews + competing comes home and sees a bunch of people on the internet don't really like her, and for no rational reason. That's all you've accomplished

This recurring discussion about female players and tournaments needs to be banned form TL. I don't understand what's wrong with you people, we've already heard all the arguments before, there is no need whatsoever for them to be brought up EVERY SINGLE TIME a thread that is even slightly related to a girl who plays SC2 pops up.

There is NOTHING new you can say that hasn't been said and heard before on the topic - many times.

It's just outright hostility now rather than an argument, no matter how nicely you phrase it. Seriously just lay off for the sake of decency.

Basicly what a bunch of other people already said. It's not like females getting interviewed is taking publicity away from guys, it's just adding to the interviews that are already out there. And if you're one of the people arguing "but she doesn't deserve to be interviewed there are much better players out there." So what? There are plenty of guys getting interviewed too. By that logic huk/idra are basicly the only foreigners that deserve to be interviewed, and all non code S koreans shouldn't be interviewed, right? Since there are moe deserving people out there. Hell, by that logic MVP MC and Nestea are the only ones who should ever be interviewed. Really, just stop with the hate.

My only gripe here with julua and alej is they never come on mine/ngrys vent anymore, those jerks!

holy crap what is with this crap of her getting undeserved attention? It is because of a***holes like some of the guys on this thread that girls and women are too intimidated or afraid to dedicate themselves to video games, computer games, or IT in general. You have to recognize that inclusion such as by promoting females, particularly when competing with their male counterparts is essential to creating the equality that would allow girls and women to gain the same skill and success as guys in a currently predominantly male field. How is that not perfectly clear? I mean people saying that we should not support women in e-sports as done by this thread and interview are like those morons saying that minorities should get over racism and toughen up, or try to "fit in" rather than ask society to mold themselves in order to accept, accommodate, include. Grow up TL (no not all of you. But you know who you are).

It's just in the sc2 general forums.

Since over the time it has been proven that in esports female players are not able to compete with top male players why would you randomly throw in equality? From an objective point of view a girl achieving a result in esports is more worthy than a guy with the same result. I am pretty sure most female players agree on this and there's a reason 100% of the top players in SC2 are guys. Honestly having female tournaments only harms no one and makes esports more interesting, and if any random grandmaster guy is pissed they don't get the same attention as a diamond girl then they better work their ass off to get to a point where they deserve to be recognized rather than crying.

Actually, I don't see HOW it's been proven that girls can't compete at the same level as guys. In fact, scientific study has proven that women are actually better at multitasking than men are, which is an essential skill in Starcraft. I think it comes down to the fact that there are no women that commit to the game as much as the professional men do. It doesn't necessarily help with teams signing reportedly Diamond level players like SlayerS Eve, or Julia to CheckSix.

Women are separated out in physical sports like Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Soccer, etc. because the female body is not as athletic as the male body, however in a game like Starcraft or Chess, there's no handicap from being a female, it's just the lack of effort put in by the "professional" females compared to the professional males.

Putting effort in competing is the essential ability to become a top player in esports. Having a talent for multitasking only helps in the way. Your argument makes no sense to me, especially since the numbers obviously state that there's no top female player it's obvious to assume that, for whatever reason, the genders are not equal when it comes to esports.

You know what they say about making assumptions....
As far as I'm aware, I haven't heard of ANY female SC2 player that dedicates 8-12 hours of play to hone their abilities. The fact that there aren't any top female players could also just be representative of the lack of females who dedicate themselves to the game full time. I could say that because there are no top tier Nigerian players there is obviously some physical handicap that makes Nigerian players unable to compete at the highest level, when in fact the problem is that Starcraft 2 isn't IN Nigeria. You said it yourself "Putting effort in competing is the essential ability to become a top player in esports" why should female gamers get to take the spotlight away from male players who ARE putting in that effort to compete, when the female isn't even close to the same level of dedication?

So you are basically saying I'm right since you even go as far as saying girls can't dedicate as much time so they are not able to achieve same results as males. I never said they have inferior intellectual capabilities I just said that, for whatever reason, esports is not gender equal, and if you look at the numbers it's pretty self explainatory. And honestly I've never ever met a girl stating the contrary. I just don't understand why so many people are pissed and bring in equality out of nowhere. Please explain.

He never said women can't dedicate themselves to gaming, just that they aren't. This doesn't mean they can not do it.

Thanks for the correction, doesn't make any difference.

It actually makes a world of difference. If I CAN'T do something, for instance, playing Soccer professionally because I have an injury in my leg (a true fact by the way), compared to NOT doing something even though it's possible, like dedicating myself full time to Starcraft, it's a choice compared to a physical barrier.

Doesn't change the fact girls never played esports on the same level as the guys at the top so there's no point in whining about the best females players getting spotlight. People are crying over an interview and the fact they decided to put on MLG stage a match of losira vs ailuj. This is so ridicolous it doesn't make sense.

I don't think anything I've said could be remotely construed as whining, I'm simply making the point that it's not a physical difference between female and male esports players. It should also be noted that Julia is not even close to the best female Starcraft players out there. I'm not trying to be sexist, but she's on Check6 for her personality, and her ability to draw attention and viewers, and she was on the mainstage because of her looks, and Losira, not her talent as a player. I happen to do work with a team that had players at Providence, and one of my teammates faced Puzzle not once, but twice. Did he make the mainstage? No, because his skill level wasn't high enough to warrant it. I think in a world that constantly fights over equality, people should actually believe in equality. If you were to look at my other posts about this, or my Twitter, you would see that I'm actually pretty supportive of this girl and her activity in esports, however at this point I think it's a bit silly to be conducting all these interviews and spotlights when she wasn't even the best female player at the event. It's great exposure for CheckSix, but from the outside, ESPECIALLY as a female gamer, it might be LESS productive putting the prettiest girl on stage, over the better player. We don't need the status quo to be seen as "I have to be pretty to be a successful female gamer",

Edit: Typo

Get over yourself bud. Your teammate wasn't harmed by the girl's game on the main stage. Nor was any other aspiring male semi-pro. If you're involved in a semi-pro team you should have learned by now that esports marketing isn't about divvying out attention based solely on skill. Nor should it be.

Glad to see there are many voices in this thread drowning out the ones claiming sexism against male gamers (lol).

Lotsa good questions, and props for posting the times for easy reference!

I'm very happy she is being given spotlight for playing SC2 competitively. I think it helps foster the growth in female gaming in general, as well as within SC2. Seeing her improve would be cool too.

Players breakthrough into the championship bracket/pool play all the time (Trimaster last MLG?), but girl SC2 gamers are far rarer. It may not be 'fair', but when MLG is in the business of putting out content that people want to watch they will put an interview out of Diamond level girl. However, the insinuations that the only reason people are watching her is because she is hot (she's ok - my gf is cuter) is completely off base. There's a quadriplegic who plays SC2. People are interested in that. If a 6 year old boy started playing SC2 at MLG, people would be interested in that. And MLG would produce content that shows people more about these particular unique gamers.

However some random pro that took out Sheth? Yeah, good for him. But that doesn't make him interesting, and when incredible results do not fill the content requirements that MLG wants, personality and background reigh supreme. Like seriously, you expect me to care about a random NA pro? I'd rather hear what it's like for a girl trying to be a gamer.

I don't understand the negative reactions to outreach efforts to expand e-sports to a new demographic. I enjoyed seeing what top female players could do in the Zowie cup, and I want to see more girls playing seriously.

Best of luck, ailuj! Keep looking back to the basics and to your mechanics in your pursuit of master's league and beyond!

It could be I am out of the loop, but I have heard more of flo then ailuj. While awesome that ailuj got some main stage Losira action, isn't flo a bit more of "name" to use as a female foreign pro? No disrespect to ailuj though, she definitely note worthy and I hope to see more gamers who are also not afraid to be noted as female, as well as less stupid 15 year old comments.
