Because he said he would if Idra won in China in response to slasher's bet. Then Idra proceeded to win.

BarCraft is the foreigner community's answer to the Korean PC Bangs.

We now live at a time where everyone has high speed internet at home and a PC beefy enough to play StarCraft, so PC bangs are not coming back. Without them, the StarCraft community lost a home where like-minded people can congragate. This is, in my opinion, the reason why BarCraft is spreading like wild-fire. It's not really so much about drinking, but about creating a local social space and demonstrate a physical presence for our community. That's how we can get recognition, that's how we grow the scene.

never thought of it like this but that's a really nice theory

Trust me, you don't need to drink to have fun at a bar

couldn't disagree more. I find very few things less interesting than a drunk person when I'm not drunk.

couldn't disagree more. i'm more often than not the driver- with the right mindset and people it doesn't matter anyway if you drink or not

I think in general people look at drinking the wrong way. You shouldn't be looking at it as going somewhere to drink. Drinking should be secondary to the actual purpose. If drinking is your primary purpose then i feel you're doing it wrong.

And i fully understand that people exist who just want to go get smashed. I can't relate to those people anymore. If that's what a Barcraft is to you, well you're missing the point. Focus on the second half of barcraft, not the first. The bar is just a setting.
Although i'm sure the bars appreciate the business, so drink up if that's what floats your boat!

I look forward to this! It's such a neat phenomenon, and i hope it continues onward. The root of it for me is people like to be around like minded people and have fun. A bar is a perfect setting for this. I mean look at the LR threads. I post in those because those are the closest people to me who i can enjoy live SC2 with. If i could go down to the local pub with a few dozen other nerds and yell and cheer and shit, i'd be on that like white on rice. For too long we've been restricted to sharing our passion electronically. Now we can do it IRL. With beer. I think that's almost liberating.

I also appreciate the "for ESPORTS" attitude. I feel it may get carried away at times but the passion is obvious, and the willingness to share it i hope will pay dividends in future. And that's BarCraft. It's not just people sitting behind their computers. It's out in the 'real world' for all to see. If that doesn't open eyes i don't know what will.

I think I'm going to try to attend this. I hope the Hilton Bar isn't too expensive, I want to support the venue but hotel bars are notorious for being overpriced.

For those of us at BlizzCon, I'm pretty disappointed to have to choose between watching the GSL finals live, or being at this event! Argh. The opportunity to watch a live GSL finals may never come again in our entire lives.

BarCraft is the Foreigner's answer to the Korean PC Bangs. It can do for StarCraft 2 what PC Bangs done for BW.

We now live at a time where everyone has high speed internet at home and a PC beefy enough to play StarCraft, so PC bangs are not coming back. Without them, the StarCraft community lost a home to congregate around. This is, in my opinion, the reason why BarCraft is spreading like wild-fire. It's not really so much about drinking, but about creating a local social-space and demonstrate a physical presence of our community to the public.

That's how we can get recognition, new sponsors and fresh faces, that's how we grow the scene.

BarCraft has the potential to create three things:
  • Recognition - BarCraft garners mainstream interest like nothing else. To the mainstream world, BarCraft is face that they can observe and try to appreciate, because it creates obvious value. That's why while StarCraft is thirteen years old, it's BarCraft that got it featured on the Wall Street Journal.
  • Rally point - Our community is huge, with over a hundred thousand hardcore audience and probably a magnitude more in casual ones, yet we don't meet up except for the sporaic major and local tournaments. BarCraft gives us a good excuse to finally meetup with fellow nerd ballers in a casual, social setting. Making friends are easier when you already shared interests.
  • Revenue - BarCraft can be developed as a significant new revenue source for the industry, if properly harnessed. It has the potential to be the fund base to jumpstart local competitive scene beyond the "charity work" that had fueled StarCraft in the past. It can also help gather new sponsors, like the "lifestyle" brands that SirScoots keep harping about.

Unfortunately, money always dirties community intiatives. BarCraft will some soul searching.

I'll help myself there this time even if you guys forget me. See youuuuu.

Well done. Whoever fucked up the Ultimate Barcraft has to be breathing a small sigh of relief, and whoever made this happen is to thank for that.

I'm guessing they will be either at Blizzcon watching (Nestea) or competing in the finals (Mvp) :-p
