Jazz forward Gordon Hayward is lending his name to his second biggest passion.
Hayward will participate in IPL 3: Origins, a "StarCraft II" in-person video game tournament that will be held Oct. 6-9 at Caesars in Atlantic City, N.J.
Hayward is being prepared for the tournament by IGN pro league coaches and some of the world’s top StarCraft players. He will be one of the primary participants at IPL 3: Origins, and will challenge global StarCraft II stars, including IdrA, Select and WhiteRa.
I'm honestly not a devout fan of the NBA, but even I recognize this as something news worthy. It can do nothing but benefit eSports if fans from traditional sports take notice.
So how do you guys think he'll do? I doubt anyone expects him to qualify for the main bracket, but even a ro64/32 in the open bracket would be impressive. Also how do you feel this affects eSports in general?
He's Silver in 1v1 correct? I'm pretty sure he'll just be there for fun, otherwise he will be very disappointed. Still this is amazing to have someone from mainstream sports who likes SC2 enough to show up at live events.
Edit: I'm a huge NBA fan so this is really cool for me. I told all my friends and they weren't as impressed as me lol.
Holy freaking cow. That's going to be awesome. I'm pretty sure he will lose... who are IGN pro league coaches, anyway? HD and Painuser? Probably good at coaching, but not for helping amateurs beat the pros at IPL 3.
Honestly couldn't care less how he does, I will be rooting for him because I love basketball and mainstream ESPORTS exposure. Gogo Gordon you just made a new Jazz Fan. Also, anyone want to start up a trend of buying his jersey to show some love for a pro-athlete playing SC2?
Wow, I don't know who the hell that is, but still fucking amazing exposure for esports. Guess it would be like Nani or Rooney turning up for an i-series event in the UK and competing ?

He was Gold a few months ago, I think he's Plat now. Chill and Zergman and a few other people have been coaching him and helping him improve.
I remember watching his stream the first time he was featured on TL haha it'll be fun to see how far he has come for IPL if any of the training at stuck GL!@!!!

ugh I wish somebody other than Zergman would be helping him lol. Zergman isn't a very good coach.
But awesome that Gordon is gonna be at IPL :3 Should be a fun little thing and it should bring a little more exposure to IPL. I'm glad that Gordon isn't "ashamed" of playing SC2, like a few celebrities are of their personal time activities.
I don't see why this would be anything but good. From the few times I've watched his stream he seemed like a really cool guy, and I think it's awesome that he does this when he absolutely doesn't have to.
The guy will bring huge exposure to SC2. But, yeah, hey'll probably get rolled by round 2 (I think Open is double elim?), but this is a starting player in the NBA, who made 2.5 million on his rookie contract last year. This is *wonderful* for NA exposure.
This is an awesome piece of news. Obviously he won't go far in the tourney, but as far a publicity stunts go (and I say that without the negative connotation), this is exactly the kind of awesomeness I like to see.
Nik Lentz, a pro MMA and UFC contract fighter is also huge into eSPORTS and SC2. He attended Raleigh and tweets just about everyday about SC2. @Niklentz if you wanna check it out. I think it's awesome that people outside the 'nerd' realm are starting to get into our little world!
I've watched Hayward stream team games and it was always funny, I wish him all the best!
This phrase gets thrown around too much, but this is a bonafide case of something that is good for E-Sports. Cross-pollination is something this industry needs more of, and it draws a lot of new eyes to the sport we love !

People don't really talk about what is "good for e-sport", the phrase is: "It's HURTING E-SPORT!!"

Lets hope he can master the 1:1:1
Well not quite Rooney or Nani, but more of a Welbeck player... I think at least. Ya he is younger player only played one season so far. But an interesting guy and he was picked 9th overall in the draft which is pretty damn good. Maybe more of a Ashley Young player... haven't seen him play so around that. STILL VERY COOL!
I believe Tim Duncan use to play the original Starcraft back when he was drafted.
But yeah its huge to get a NBA player to come to these events. Athletes are super competitive so I bet he starts asking a million questions after he loses out to get better.
He is obviously there for fun. This to me is REALLY cool cause the name is getting bigger and not only that but it will bring the name of Starcraft to more sports fans cause some of them will read this story. Good for e=sports, good for everything.
Did anyone else read the comments on the article in the OP? It is only 3 or 4 people, but it doesn't seem like it legitimizes e-sports at all, unfortunately. It's great that he is into it, but I don't think his fans will watch the IPL or SC2 now. He might just gain SC2 fans, but I don't think too many basketball fans will come check this out.
Of course, I could be totally wrong and those could just be 3 or 4 of the most negative commenters. I just can't see a reason it would be different for other people.

Just because someone scoffs at it doesn't mean he won't tune in. Of course he'll use the excuse of "I'm just watching it to make fun of it", but in the end he'll still be watching one of the best SC2 tournaments in the world, and that's what's important.

I hope thats the case. ^_^
EDIT: It just seems a little more difficult seeing as it won't be on TV but will be online. It takes a little bit more effort to find than a TV channel. I do hope I am wrong though.
Thank god for the Lockout- Hayward Fighting! If he wins 1 game that will be legendary. Idk he's an athlete, he knows what training hard means, he's got little else to do and great coaches, who knows what'll happen?
Gordon Hayward is the man. He may not have averaged a lot of points last year but he didnt get a lot of minutes because he was a rookie. Towards the end of the year when he got minutes he put up 22 pts with 9-14 FGs against the Lakers with Kobe Bryant guarding him. He said Kobe elbowed him and he gave him a bow back . Needless to say after the game Kobe Bryant was raving about Gordan saying hes going to be very good. The last game of the season against the Nuggets he had a career high 35 pts on 12-17 FGs and 5-6 from 3. I think he was sending a message to the league about how hes going to be next year. I think he will be a future All-star, I think hes going to be that good.
With that said I think its amazing hes into starcraft, connects with the SC community, and is playing in IPL3. Best of luck to Gordon in IPL3 and next year in the league. Really hope there isnt a lockout in the NBA next year.
Cool to see that he'll be there as a fan. As a player...
If he gets to 1v1 IdrA or actually just play in the event, I'm sorry but I have nothing else to say then that's just totally stupid and wrong. There's a spot going to him over a legit player who puts in a ton of time over him just playing in the event for a promotional reason?
Whatever. eSports man, yeah it's getting so cool.... I get to see IdrA bench press and a silver leaguer NBA player (really who cares?) play in a pro sc2 event, whats tomorrow?
eSports currently involves backlack, bad manner, and critizism. If Hayward wants to start playing sc2 in these pro events then he needs to take the good with the bad. He's a terrible starcraft 2 player, you shouldn't be there as a player Hayward. I hope I read the topic wrong/that he doesn't play.
^^^
This was under the assumption that it was invite only and that there was some pre set 1v1 match with IdrA which is just a waste of time.

I think this would appeal less to NBA fans (he hasn't really done anything yet in the NBA) and more to people who followed that year's crazy March Madness and Butler's incredible run (he was absolutely the darling of that whole tournament). I just hope this becomes more publicized...
And honestly, he should be working on his jump shot and getting stronger instead of practicing SC2. :D
It's nice that he's going to come and hang out and it's great publicity. Anyway, I wish him the best, but he is going to get manhandled. It's okay because we still <3 him and at least he tries!

This is awesome. As a fan of both traditional ball and stick sports and eSports, I love this kind of cross over. This is the kind of exposure it's going to take to get eSports in to the mainstream consciousness. People need to see "cool" people playing it and getting excited (not that the current pros aren't cool, they are, but I mean cool in the pop culture sense).

You realize the NBA is in a lockout right now, and he literally can't go to team facilities, right? I am sure he is working on his jump shot, but it's the off season and a lock out. Don't be a stick in the mud.
This is pretty sick awesome news! I love the basketball in general. I remember watching Butler through the NCAA in 2010 and the half court shot he took at the end of the championship. Really awesome to see him coming and supporting esports on such a big stage. Regardless of how he does, it'll be awesome for everyone!
Good luck, hope you win some while your there!
If you google "Gordon Hayward," the article about him going to IPL is the 5th result wooo exposure!

Yup, MLG is getting to the stage of being big enough that we could start a celebrity tournament to bring in fresh new faces especially for games like CoD. Do it for Charity and I'm sure they'll be all for it and come out of the wood work.
This is going to bring some exposure to eSports, because ESPN is constantly talking about what NBA stars are doing during the lockout, could we possibly see SC2 on ESPN for the first time? I think so.
I was wondering if Hayward's one-night stream was a one time thing, and he had gotten bored of interacting with the eSports community. But this obviously proves me wrong. And who cares who he plays or whether he wins or not?! It's freaking Gordon Hayward! <3

This is sick news and Gordon seems like a cool guy to hang out with judging from his stream. It is nice to see a NBA player relax and play video games or some other outlet. It is common to see a professional athlete get into trouble by doing stupid shit as their choice of recreation.
lol love that he's so open about this and is participating. any type of main stream mingling is good for sc2 and esports, so more power to ipl and gordon. love this guy more and more lol.
HOT_BID, TEACH HIM THE WAYS OF BOSS CANNON RUSH. watch him beat idra with it lol
This is pretty cool. If you are a Jazz fan going to the event make sure to rep his jersey at least for day 1.
A lot of athletes actually play video games, obviously most tend to play madden / sports games or CoD / Halo. However, the point is the competitive aspect of these games and SC2 is similar to their profession.
As a former high school / college athlete I totally see why he would do this. I was already a huge fan from Butler's run in the tourney (killed my bracket though lol) but huge props for this!

I love Gordon, and his game, but if someone expects him to be a starting SF against the likes of Lebron James, Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson, Kevin Durant, etc etc, then they are having pipe dreams, (probably of the crack cocaine caliber) Gordon will be a fantastic bench player on a good team, due to his versatility, and ability to handle the ball with size, and see the floor. However due to his grinding style, this is the most he can ask for. This Jane character criticizing him, most likely has no clue of the match-ups that exist on the NBA floor, and what Gordon Haywood can legitimately provide for his team. If theres anything from his run in Butler that we can see, is that he grinds, and wins, and to expect anything else from him just because he is has "made it" is only fooling yourself. Gordon most certainly works harder at his craft than most sc2 players work at their own. :D

Definitely Idra vs Gordon on the court. My mind can't even process Idra playing basketball.
IdrA said in an interview that he was into basketball (I think) until his school friends introduced Starcraft to him. He wasn't even into video games then. Hard to believe, I know.

He dropped 24 points on Kobe and 34 on the Nuggets the last week of the season and you think he cant be a starter in the league? The guy barely got minutes until the end of the season. You don't know basketball, stop acting like you do.

As far as I know (I've been following since I was 8-9, before Jordan retired from Chicago), a lot of NBA players are big into games but mostly console since it's easy to carry on the road and easy to play with teammates. Nice to see some get into PC games.

People who think this is somehow 'legitimizing e-sports' need to slow their roll. The average NBA fan has no idea who Gordon Hayward is. He's like a low-masters level basketball player. He's obviously really good since he's in the NBA, but no one's buying a ticket specifically to see him. That being said, it's still pretty cool.

The Nuggets are one of the worst defensive teams in the league, and the Jazz were finishing up a miserable season. That doesn't mean anything. While the first sentence may be true... The second is way off... He is basically GM level. Think about it, can the average Starcraft fan name all of the people in GM? No, of course not. He is one of a small group of people who are the best in the world at what they do...

Kobe Bryant's not a GM or a commentator. Of course he's going to say nice things about a fellow player, especially one who's a nice guy. Anyway, would you trust Michael Jordan's player evaluation skills? He's a better player than Kobe, but not exactly a great judge of NBA talent.

Out of those players, only LBJ and Durant are legitimate superstars. Paul Pierce is a great NBA player but he's in his 30s now and is definitely on the backside of his career. Joe Johnson is horribly overpaid.
Gordon can most certainly start in the league. Is he going to average 25+ a night? No. How many players do, though? If he, as the 9th overall pick, can start at SG/SF (he can play either position), average 12-15 a night with a few assists and rebounds, that's an incredibly successful career by most NBA standards, and there's literally no reason to think he can't do that. He doesn't HAVE to be a superstar, most starters in the NBA aren't.
Is he in the same league as LBJ and Durant? No. Does he have to be? No. How many superstars are there? Maybe 10-15? And you're saying that because he's not on the same level as them that he can't start? Clearly you don't understand the NBA at all.
Seasonally, I don't care about this NBA player. I do recognize how this could be important in slowly raising ESPORTS to another level though. It all comes with the power of IGN.

As a Jazz fan who watched the majority of the games Hayward has played so far in the NBA, I argue that Gordon will be a solid starter in the NBA. He's an excellent 3pt shooter, good ball handler, and not even a bad defender which some people believed he would be. Iif he continues to improves as he did over last season he's going to be a very good player.
Calling him a 'low-masters' basketball player might be one of the most retarded things I've ever read on these forums. Wow. He's certainly a top 500 basketball player in the world just by being in the NBA, and Hayward is already an average player in the NBA, which is basically like being in Code A.

He started the last 4 games of the season last year after he balled on Kobe. He will be the starting SF next year. Lets see how your bench player prediction holds up.

It's called a metaphor. My point is that no one goes to a basketball game thinking 'OMG Gordon Hayward'.

We'll see if he starts, and even if he does the Jazz are a lottery team. Doesn't mean much. And once again, those games were garbage time.
I'm not saying he's bad, but his ceiling is as a decent role player if he's lucky.
I dont think he'll make it very far and anyone would bet money on him, but I bet this will be a great experience for him to see the E-Sports scene in person
I don't think anyone expects him to make it far period. It's just for fun. Don't read much into it other than the fact he'll bring more attention to the game.

It's called an analogy and it was a shitty one, he's on an NBA team, he's already 'made it', your analogy would fit if he was in a minor basketball league, perhaps.

Haha, loved this one. Good one, my man.
This is very cool news, though. Any mainstream acceptance is a good thing, especially from a traditional athlete. It shows that the barrier between traditional sports and e-sports is less than the general public perceives it to be.
What is his username, so that I can keep watch for his stream? I didn't catch it.
Calling him a 'low-masters' basketball player might be one of the most retarded things I've ever read on these forums. Wow. He's certainly a top 500 basketball player in the world just by being in the NBA, and Hayward is already an average player in the NBA, which is basically like being in Code A. Im aware plenty of people think he wont be anything in the league. There are plenty of people that think he will be. Calling me dellusional for an opinion is a little over the top. He started the last 4 games of the season last year after he balled on Kobe. He will be the starting SF next year. Lets see how your bench player prediction holds up.
We'll see if he starts, and even if he does the Jazz are a lottery team. Doesn't mean much. And once again, those games were garbage time.
I'm not saying he's bad, but his ceiling is as a decent role player if he's lucky.
Having watched his stream, I think he's got a great attitude towards improving in general. Also since he seems like such a nice guy I really want to see him succeed.
This dude is awesome. He's passionate and enthusiastic about starcraft and isn't afraid to talk about it in interviews with the popular media. I don't care if he get roflstomped - Gordan Hayward fan for life <3

Dude, the kid is young and has A LOT of potential. Did you not watch him at Butler? I question your credibility on basketball players potential, because how can you not see how good he is already lol.
For the person/people who think he is getting paid - do you really think that they made him an offer that would make this a financially viable stunt? He's a professional athlete ffs they don't come cheap, that money is better spent on other things. From watching his stream that one time (which makes me an EXPERT on his mentality) I think he's genuinely interested in the community and having fun and maybe a little publicity on the side. Just a little.
Does anyone know if Hayward has played in the IPL yet? If so , could you link to VODs or something? I totally forgot IPL was going on so i couldnt take a glance to find Hayward.

TBH College is a lot different from University. Hayward is probably never going to be a star on an NBA team (although he was amazing in college). That being said he's still very good and definitely a strong role player. While the Jazz aren't going anywhere but down, he still has many years to be a key role player on a contender.

what?
how is college different from university? maybe in canada where college is 2 years and uni is 4 or w.e
Butler is a university that's in the first Division.
The guy has long arms, good footwork, is a harder worker and competitor, he's pretty fast off the dribble, good release. And he tries on defense.
He is a Wilson Chandler/Danny Granger/Kevin Durant type player in terms of his style. He doesn't need to have Lebron's athleticism to be successful, if you are a long SF with long arms who can dribble and shoot you can be a high scorer in the NBA.
Are there REALLY people downplaying the credibility of a basketball player on TL?? LOL dude whatever, he's a professional basketball player and he's playing sc2 This can only be good for SC2 just enjoy it. EDIT: I guess it's just as bad that i'm complaining about those people >.>
Considering the number of people that play basketball, and the number that people that play SC2, Gordon Hayward is in the top tier of his profession. Trying to call it anything less than Code-S equivalent is ignorant.

This makes no sense and poor Gordon Hayward will be brutalized.
This is the wrong attitude when going to a tournament. He's competing for fun and to help our community by bringing in more press. I am sure he holds no illusions as to what he will accomplish there, but he is playing anyway.
Shows good character, good manner, and a good player. Offline events are fun. He couldn't have chosen a better one to attend.
