First, we want to thank the Team Liquid community for all the great feedback we received in our last academy thread! We went back to the drawing board to address the community's concerns and have come up with something that we think addresses the issues brought up in the last thread.
Before we get into the details, I want to share the best part: To show our dedication to this endeavor, we're going to send our top performing academy member to MLG Providence, covering the hotel and entry fee for the event (travel will be covered starting in the 2012 season). Additionally, we will be sending our top performing academy member to each of the four MLG events next year, covering travel (or offsetting travel expenses up to $400), hotel and entry fees. Top performance is determined by a tournament that will be held prior to each event with the winner going to MLG. In addition to a one-in-six chance of winning a trip to compete at MLG, our academy members can expect the following benefits:
- Weekly replay analysis from some of vVv Gaming's top players (such as vVvTime and vVvNGry), - Monthly coaching from top vVv Players (vVv Time and vVv Titan) - Scheduled practice times - Scheduled time to go over pro replays with other Academy members - Regular Clan Wars with similarly ranked teams to provide competitive experience for our members
The vVv academy will consist of six members from North America. Acceptance into the academy will be determined by a quarterly BO3 double-elimination tournament . Academy members from previous quarters are welcome to reapply. The first tournament will be held on September 23rd through 25th. For our pilot run, the size of the tournament will be limited to 32 people. If more than 32 players apply, we will adjust for next season and choose the applicants to participate based on:
- Ladder rank - Quality of application - Twitter / facebook / livestream / youtube (all social media) - Race (must pick zerg, terran, or protoss)
The first tournament to determine who goes to MLG Providence will be held October 28th through 30th. This tournament will be arranged into two pools of three players each, with the top finishers from each pool going head to head for the prize. All games will be BO3. To help offset the cost of travel for our first event to Providence, we will also be providing the winner with a Steelseries mouse, keyboard, headset, and mousepad.
Please post your application to the academy here: http://www.vvv-gaming.com/forum/topic/51921-players-applying-to-the-academy/ Application deadline is Sept 15th.
Again, we want to thank the Team Liquid community for your feedback. Please let us know what we can do better.

This sounds like a much better format than what you guys had previously announced, very similar to how coL is running their Academy, great work!
|
So now im not from the US i cant apply?

Sorry, for now we are only accepting applications from North America.
|
there we go, a better format
|
Now this sounds professional. Good luck to vVv. Way to go.
|
Wow, this sounds like a really awesome revision! Best of luck with it, and hope you find some great new players you can eventually add to your permanent roster!
|
Very nice! Good job and good luck!
|
:O why not random? so if guniepig decided to app to our academy he couldn't? Anyways, this is a completely academy and the added benefits are really nice. vVv Fighting!
|
gj and props to the top manager from the last vvv academy thread. He does it right not like this sugerbear fellow. Good luck vVv
|
Sounds cool. Wish I had the time to participate but as it is getting in 5 ladder games a day is about my max :/
|
this is so much better than the first thing, good job listening to the feedback, obviously if so many people voiced their negative opinion, it meant something was wrong, and you changed it.

That's an interesting thought. Maybe we should let random players apply to the academy? I think we just assumed that most random players pick 1 race to play competitively, but perhaps there are some who compete as random?
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
|
Awesome, glad to see that vVv can listen to all the negative community feedback and come out with something that looks like a great resource for top masters/teamless grandmaster players.
|
I like either way, and I'll always support vVv for what they encourage and support their members with. Wishing you guys the best~
I should join just so I can get coaching time with Titan, omgosh. <3
+ Show Spoiler +YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA?!?! -_-;; I'm sure people will find someway to complain about this, I assume the next thing people are going to start claiming is it's stealing from coL acad or something ridiculous. I really hope not though. ㅠ.ㅠ

Mad props to vVv gaming. Thanks for listening to the community. I really like the structure and formant of the new and improved academy. Keep up the good work.

As long as the coaches are fine with it, I don't see a problem. It might be difficult for the coaches because they would have to coach all three races of the random players.
|
Is there a age restriction for the academy? Edit: Age restriction is 16+ from what I read on the application page. TT half a year off.. so hard for teens/kids to get opportunities.

There are some rare unicorns who can play random equally and at a high level. There have been games played in the GSL and other big tournies where a player chooses random. However these people are so rare that it becomes solid advice to tell players to race pick. There are a lot of random players who think they are not handicapping themselves when they really are. There are relatively few players who can pull it off.
Therefore it is still solid advice to tell everyone to pick a damn race and really refine those three matchups.
|
Excellent.. I was happy to apply to the academy prior to this revision simply for the access to practice partners and a tie into potential salaried full time play for a team down the road, but this looks MUCH better.

I want to be clear that you do NOT have to use social media to apply, but if it comes down to picking you or another player for the season 1 tournament, and he is equal to you in every way except he uses twitter actively and streams regularly, he may be picked over you.
However this is only after we determine that you are equivalent in ladder rank and application quality.

Can you explain why non US citizens are not allowed in the academy is it purely a cost thing for shipping them to events or what?

I am positive it is, I mean it does cost quiet a lot more to get someone from europe to america then just in the US, or I imagine anyway.

That and maybe language/time barriers to an extent.

Enjoyed reading this and hope to see vVv do well with their program :D Glad to see the differences from the last thread, well played vVv, I absolutely appreciate your effort to meet the community, instead of forcing the community to meet you. Laudable.
|
Please continue to involve the community!
Stream the tourney, stream the lessons, set up a VVV academy stream and encourage students to use it (help them set it up etc).
Give us regular updates and behind-the-scenes stuff, like who's doing well and what problems people are working to overcome.
People like me may not have the skills to make it into something like this, but it is really interesting to follow!

For the first season we want to keep it as simple as possible. In later seasons we may be able to support other regions depending on how this goes.

It is currently our intention to stream all Academy tournaments and clan wars. We also encourage all of our sponsored members and academy members to stream as much as possible. Of course it's up to the discretion of the student to decide whether or not to stream lessons
I like the idea with the behind-the-scenes stuff. What specifically do you think we should talk about? And where should we put this info?

ever thought of a bi-weekly clan war versus complexity academy? would be a fun little rivalry, would give both academies a stronger team atmosphere through clan wars, and would be a good measure of progress for both teams.

This was my call for this first academy. We were concerned about budget and cost. We may next time allow foreign players but cap their travel reimbursement (say $400USD). Strictly budget concerns.

I think right now if a euro player does well. They still can't send them to a MLG. Cause its way to expensive. Like it says in the OP. The best performing member of the academy will be sent to MLG. This won't happen if the player is from europe.
I think its more to keep costs down. Plus the hours would be a little harsh on your body if you have school and such, as either you would be playing really early morning or late late night. Again this would make things slightly more complex and make practice harder for European players. This is just my take on the rule though and Is just my perspective as someone who has applied to the academy.
Also I was wondering. Can we get like a quote from a pro player or something as part of our application. So you have references of sorts.

They are telling you that at some point they will reinburse up to $400 usd from travel expenses. So in order to avoid having europeans that would have to put extra cash to go to MLGs that they don't have/ don't want to use on it, they are puttng the "region cap".
So it is safer for the academy team to have players on north america to whom the reimburse would help a lot when it comes to travel expenses, hopefully ensuring that the winner of the seasonal tournament goes to an MLG for example.

So someone who doesn't ladder and still has improved a ton can't get in. I sent LordJerith a pm and he said just to explain the reason why I don't ladder and I did.
Simply enough I do not ladder, nor have I laddered really since december of last year. I maybe play 3-4 matches a season on ladder and play against practice partners most of the time. Many of them being Korean players.
I am fine with playing tournament games, and custom games against practice partners. I cannot take to laddering much. As nerves sometimes get a little rough on me and I cannot play near to where I want to be. Never had an issue in online tournaments and don't expect to have the same issue in LAN's.
I bring up the question to you desRow. Have you seen me play? have you seen where I am currently? not that I'm aware of. Auctally in some games I played against Sterling. I won against him in a TvT, and also beat him in 2 TvP (he played toss those games). He likely didn't play his best. Though I still won.
I've gotten my play looked at by some top players and they have said when I play well. I play at a high masters level. Then there are some games where I don't perform as well. I took note of those ones and they were the ones that were ladder replays. The few I had anyways.
|
@masterbreti you might be truthful when you say you don't ladder but actually a good player but many many people say the same thing and many of those people could easily get a high level player to say they are good too. Asking to look at your games may be a fair thing to ask from your point of view but think about the poor guy(s) that have to watch every replay from every applicant regardless of level. That would be a nightmare as usually it would be 20 replays per applicant to get a good idea.
So instead of getting mad try to understand from their point of view. They have to set some limits to get a manageable amount of viable applicants. If you're serious about being a pro gamer then sounds to me like you need to work on your nerves because I can't imagine anyone unable to perform on ladder yet being able to at an MLG tbh
Like I said I would love to have a chance but not US and lag from KR to US will probably prevent me from reaching MLG levels

Well no offense, but if you get nerves from laddering, live events/tournaments will be even worse for you. I don't know how you can say those don't affect you but laddering does.
Everyone says "I am x, but I play at Y" Diamond players who call themselves masters. Masters players who call themselves pros.
If you were really as good as you say, you could get to Masters in one, two days tops. Just go do it if you wanted to be able to do stuff with Masters prerequisites.

I think if you want to support up and coming talents, it has to be a non - random player as well. It might be true that there are some randoms that might stand out, but in the long distance its impossible or nearly impossible to play 9 match ups on an equal level compared to just 3.

If you're serious about being a pro gamer then sounds to me like you need to work on your nerves because I can't imagine anyone unable to perform on ladder yet being able to at an MLG tbh Like I said I would love to have a chance but not US and lag from KR to US will probably prevent me from reaching MLG levels
Just to be clear there's no "official" requirement to be a master/GM level player to apply, but if we receive more than 32 applications we will be using ladder rank as one of the factors to determine who to select for the tournament this season.

The tournament starts one week from Friday. If anyone else wants to participate in this now is the time to apply!

Orly sugar? I would guess high master will be on the lower end of the spectrum, most of them being NA GMs (aka Korean low-mid master ^.^)

Aww I wrote down the date as Oct 2 in my calender so I missed the tourny. Added my first opponent a week ago but he didn't msg me when I was on yesterday, oh well. No monthly titan coaching for me T_T
