[Interview] MLG CEO, Sundance DiGiovanni
This past July 13th, three members from the MLG executive team including it's CEO visited the GomTV Studios. They came to Korea to talk to GSL about projects that will come in the future, and they also visited the GSL games by themselves and experienced the games themselves. On the 15th, after the GSTL games were finished, PlayXP was able to meet with Sundance DiGiovanni again and we ran an interview to satisfy our curiosities about MLG.
The following is the complete interview with Sundance DiGiovanni.
▼ Please give us a simple introduction. - My name is Sundance DiGiovanni, and I'm currently the cofounder and the present CEO of MLG.
▼ We're curious about your purpose in visiting Korea, and what kind of schedules you guys went through. - We visited Korea for the purpose of meeting with Gretech and strengthening our relationship with them. On the first day, we got to watch the GSL match ourselves. We didn't have to worry about Production or Administration at al and we were able to enjoy it comfortably.
▼ What kind of differences are there in viewing the GSL online and in person? - It was a good experience even just for the fact that we were in the same place as the players that we could only watch through broadcasts. We were able to directly feel the scale of the production and the passion of the fans. And we were able to meet familiar faces in Tasteless and Artosis, and it was nice to see Mr Chae working directly at the scene.
▼ MLG Columbus was extremely successful. If you had to evaluate it yourself as the representative from MLG? - MLG also thinks that our Starcraft 2 tournament was successful thanks to the Korean players. We invited the best players and they played extremely well, and we're curious to see how the player exchange program with GSL will develop.
On July 16 2011 18:09 SundanceMLG wrote: 1 - "MLG also sees that our Starcraft 2 tournament was only successful thanks to the Korean players.
Never said that. Said that having the Korean players only helped to elevate the excitement level and added a new level to the competition.
▼ How did the player exchange program with GSL come to be? - GSL contains the best players in the world. I thought bringing the best players in the world would help grow Starcraft 2 overall. And the other reason would be to introduce foreign players to Korea.
▼ What do you think about Korean players getting a little bit more of a special treatment and sweeping the upper levels of the tournament? - If you want to be the best, you need to beat the best. We simply made the best accommodation to the very best. Recently, Chris Loranger beat a Korean player at Dreamhack and other tournaments and gained incredible amounts of fame. This will apply the same for other players, and so no one will be thinking of Korean players negatively, and the fans will think of it in the same way. Because the foreign fans get so excited and cheer for every little action of Korean players, there's no reason to see it negatively. ▼ In 2007, MLG bought Gotfrag.com, a Professional eSports Medium. After this, the coverage on CounterStrike began to shrink. - I'm not too sure because I wasn't in charge of it at the time. We changed our strategies as the companies merge. I think it may be because CounterStrike's popularity slowly shrunk, and the market expanded to games such as World of Warcraft.
On July 16 2011 18:09 SundanceMLG wrote: 2 - The counterstrike - WoW comment was around how we first started working with Blizzard. Was not meant as a comparative.
▼ In the beginning of this year, MLG began working with IMG(International Marketing Group). How are you planning on leading this cooperation in the future? - Through IMG we began worldwide broadcasts -- to Asia, the Middle East, even to India. While internet broadcasts are common in Korea, it's not like that overseas quite yet. It's an important opportunity to expand the market, and there's a possibility that in the future MLG will open not only in North America but also in South America and the Middle East.
▼ If that's the case, when are you planning on expanding out of America? - Very soon. There will be a detailed announcement before this year ends. ▼ As MLG prepared to expand into the worldwide market, there's a lot of comparisons between MLG with Europe's DreamHack or IEM. There are rumors that MLG will end up taking over these competitions? - To me, I think people think that positively of MLG. But because we want to be successful with other competitions and not just taking them over, we will direct our growth in a way so that we can all grow together. And the first area we will expand to outside North America will not be Europe, but South America. ▼ Is there any other accomplishments other than the player exchange program in the GSL that happened while you were in Korea? - We will announce it later together with GSL. We can't reveal the details currently, but we are planning on doing something within this year, and we will take the lead with an even bigger cooperative project next year. ▼ What does MLG think of GomTV broadcasting MLG? - There needs to be a lot of discussion with respect to delivering the content and the technical aspects so I can't say anything for certain. But we will try to proceed in the direction the Korean fans want. ▼ How many people from Korea watched MLG Columbus? - We can't reveal exact numbers but the ratings were quite good. If the project we are discussing with GSL comes to fruition, then it will become even better.
▼ There's a large number of Korean players participating in MLG Anaheim. What are your predictions? - I think everyone will do very well. There is a player that already did well in the previous tournament that is coming back and there are players coming here for the first time. It will become a good shock [T/N: motivation] to the foreign players. It's very important that we gather the best players together in one place.
▼ How do you decide which players to invite? And are there any players you specially want to invite? - Even if they're not Code S, we want players that have talents in many areas. Especially though, we hope that the previous winner of the tournament comes back for sure. And I hope that NesTea comes very soon. ▼ How many professional eSports media outlets like the ones in Korea are there in North America? And are there plans to invite people from the Korean media outlets? - There are seven important media outlets including IGN and GameSpot. Through partnership with GomTV, we want the players and reporters to accompany each other in the tournament site, and we are planning on making a press room to make content for Koreans. ▼ In the GSL, Korean Pop Idols have introduced the players, and in the NASL Grand Finals that went on recently, there was a female model that ran the interviews. What do you think of these attempts? - MLG's casts are already made of individuals famous overseas such as Tasteless and Artosis. In the case of female cast members, I think what's important is to have people who know a lot about the game to increase the quality of production. You have to think of it within that scope of not damaging the production. I think NASL lacked the professional experience to a certain extent in that regard.
On July 16 2011 18:09 SundanceMLG wrote: 3 - The NASL line. I gave a long winded answer that pointed to our intention of using Day9, DJ Wheat, Tastosis and my favorite sad kitten - JP rather than bringing in eye candy just for the sake of having eye candy. In other words - we'd want knowledgeable eye candy - which does exist.
▼ The representative gaming leagues in North America, CPL and CGS closed their doors due to financial issues. But during that time MLG had actually grown even more. What is the secret? - We caused them to fail [laugh]. The secret to MLG's growth is that we have a clear goal that guides the administrative level and the workers. CPL didn't understand the relationship with the communities and CGS fell apart by itself. Rather than spending too much money, they didn't spend it wisely.
▼ What kind of events are MLG planning on adding in the future? - In the case of PC Games, League of Legends. For console, Gears of War 3 and a few fighting games. ▼ Anything else you want to add? - It was a huge honor to be able to see the players myself and to meet the GSL executives. I want to contribute to the growth of global eSports market by strengthening our relationship with GSL.

He makes it and edits it so no other translators start doing it while he's translating. At least that's what people did for BW winner interview translations, and this might be popular enough to warrant that.

"MLG also sees that our Starcraft 2 tournament was only successful thanks to the Korean players."
I hope this is a bad translation... Some Koreans being there was great and all, but it certainly was no tipping point for me. I was watching either way. More of a success story would be the lack of any major stream disaster.
|
League of Legends is getting picked up everywhere, I'm assuming it's not because the game is a great esports game but because it is incredibly popular. DOTA2 will be like judgement day for every MOBA game.
I also like how Sundance is not afraid to take jibes at other competing/parallel events such as NASL. You don't need models or anything like that as long as you have Tastosis casting the best games, lol.

You're right, the "only" shouldn't be there. Oops. Fixed.

Much love Milkis. Good Interview! Not too much learned specifically, but I'm interested in hearing about whatever MLG and GSL are going to announce later this year.
Edit: are there any netizen comments worthwhile?

Great interview, Sundance is a great guy and I'm glad that MLG has a person of his stature leading them.

This x1000. Hopefully Nestea's competitive fire will burn with envy after MVP stomps his way through Anaheim.

haha, this would provide some controversy, but sadly its 100% true, I'm surprised Sundance would say it straight up tho lol

LoL and fighting games (other than tekken, hoping for SF) will be awesome! Gears 3 was to be expected I guess, since MLG basically has a chokehold on console FPS esports.
|
Thanks for the translation and a big thank you for MLG giving SC2 a chance. Great to hear MLG expanding to more fighters soon.
|
Thanks Milkis. Good interview. Sundance is the man.

Thanks milkis. I like sundance more and more :-)

Interesting read.
MLG is starting to fully live up to its name :D Their "announcement" seems to be big. Better keep an eye out for that.

" I think it may be because CounterStrike's popularity slowly shrunk, and the market expanded to games such as World of Warcraft. "
lol.. world of warcraft is not a esports game.. you cant compare world of warcraft with Counter.Strike, the esports game number one with Starcraft! Counter.Strike should be in MLG and not LoL, it is the legendary game of esports since 12 years ago, and FPS games should be played on PC not console!

Thanks for the translation, much appreciated.
I'm so glad that GOM-MLG are working together. This can only be a good thing for the SC2 scene.

May be a stupid question from someone who knows little to nothing about CS but what's wrong with updating the graphics and modernising it (with the same controls because that's what makes it difficult?) and then putting it back on the market and getting more people into the game?

They tried it by making (dunno if the project is still alive) CS Pro Mod, which is basically Counter-Strike 1.6 with Counter-Strike: Source graphics. The CS community had high hopes for it because it was considered to "save" the game and the community. The CS 1.6 scene is still alive, but it's practically dead in North America while Europe is still going strong. I think Asia will suffer the same fate soon since Korea was never serious in CS because of what Valve did to cyber cafes and China is more into WC3 and DotA.

Valve actually did just that with Counter Strike : Source, and by doing so they basically split the community in half, weakening both vanilla CS and CSS overall.
They kind of had the same challenge Blizzard faced with SC2, but they released CSS only a couple years (I'd say 5, off the top of my head) after CS, not 12 like SC2 after SC. So the incentive to transition from the original to the remake maybe was not high enough.

Great, thanks for translating.
Somehow I've gone from not liking MLG to loving it. The production is just constantly improving and Sundance being this active towards the community is simply great. Now I cannot wait for MLG Anaheim and perhaps that event alone would be worth a trip to the US.
|
I think we need a troll clarification of Sundance's clarification :p.
Thanks for the fast translation MIlkis! ^_^ Glad to hear that things seem to be on the up and up for MLG and SC is proving to be quite a boon.
|
Wow, this interview just made me respect MLG 10000x more.
Not only does Sundance DiGiovanni have quite possibly the most awesome name in the entire history of the world but he answered everything in a pretty straight forward and detailed answer.
Sundance DiGiovanni, seriously I'm going to get my name changed to that. Being a CEO is not a worthy position for that name, something like the President of the Northern Hemisphere is more befitting him
|
Regardless of CPL failing... I would LOVE to see MLG copy the model for CAL... then, rather than using blizzards stupid ELO for player merit, we would have a much btter medium for people to rise up from, and amateurs and pros alike could compete in a well done competitive league. Seriously who wouldnt love a MLG individual league and/or MLG winners team format league.... even if you just used PUGS it would be like a good old scrim in CS :D
|
Great interview!
BTW, Milkis are you going to be at Anaheim?

You just mentioned djWHEAT and JP, I don't think you get more knowledgeable eye candy than that. Although I do think you're being too critical of NASL and Lindsey, It was a great marketing move, and if she gets hired again she will be infinitely better Honestly it was an incredibly stupid move by NASL, which luckily turned great. Hiring interviewers because they don't know anything about the game is never a good idea.

I like the news about MLG adding a few fighting games. Hopefully ssf4ae, mvc3, and maybe tekken tag tourney 2 when that comes out later this year/early next year.
It's a shame Evo is on the same weekend as Anaheim.

You can bet they won't be adding any Capcom games, Capcom banned them from using them for fear it might destroy the FGC.... or something along those lines.

Oh shit, Milkis with a gig for Sundance ;D!
Didn't MLG have Tekken before?

Yea but there's not really anything else, so when he mentioned fighting games I assumed maybe they were working something out with Capcom finally.

I hope that NesTea comes very soon. I hope that NesTea comes very soon. I hope that NesTea comes very soon. I hope that NesTea comes very soon. I hope that NesTea comes very soon. I hope that NesTea comes very soon.
Blizzard SC2 Game Director Dustin Browder said that his favorite progamer is IMNesTea and especially SC2 Balance team chose the most refreshing strategy televised in GSL as IMNesTea's spine crawler destroying Forge-First protoss nexus......lol. They said that all of them are very surpised at it because it was totally different with their creating prupose. They told that every balancing team member is a big fan of NesTea.

Doubt it, apparently MK9 competitive scene is pretty much gonna die out after Evo from what people are saying. Unless MLG decides to save it I guess, but yea, its not that great.

Sudance, I love your answer about NASL. That is exactly how i felt. Love how you are keeping MLG professional.

Few things.
1 - "MLG also sees that our Starcraft 2 tournament was only successful thanks to the Korean players.
Never said that. Said that having the Korean players only helped to elevate the excitement level and added a new level to the competition.
2 - The counterstrike - WoW comment was around how we first started working with Blizzard. Was not meant as a comparative.

People keep saying this but I don't see in what way DJWheat and JP has more game knowledge than TB. I've just listened to DJWheat solo cast for the IPL...analysis wise it was horrible. And Wheat doesn't have any other redeeming qualities.
JP is masters, idk if that makes any difference. But Wheat is on the same level als TB for shure.

It's more like someone has to convince NesTea to go. Since NesTea doesn't really get knocked out of GSLs until pretty late, it'd be surprising to see him at a MLG for a bit. I'd love to see him at one, but we pretty much need him to take 3rd in his Ro32 GSL August group to see him anytime soon.
Though we might see him at Blizzcon, as that's always possible.

lol.. world of warcraft is not a esports game.. you cant compare world of warcraft with Counter.Strike, the esports game number one with Starcraft! Counter.Strike should be in MLG and not LoL, it is the legendary game of esports since 12 years ago, and FPS games should be played on PC not console! May be a stupid question from someone who knows little to nothing about CS but what's wrong with updating the graphics and modernising it (with the same controls because that's what makes it difficult?) and then putting it back on the market and getting more people into the game?
well no that's a silly idea. "updating" CS graphics is not gonna work. CS is CS, if you change any part of it it's not CS anymore and BTW the game engine is way to old to improve the graphic aspect of the game in a good way. CS is a great esport game but if they wanna do a new one, better do it on a new game engine. And btw, i agree with the first comment. FPS should be played on PC (at least at the pro level), not on a f*ing console. And stop that call of duty crap and bring us some cool new esport fps (not based on a f*ing stupid real war)

Great interview, and thanks to Milkis for the translation (and Sundance for the further clarification, haha).
I loved MLG Columbus, and if MLG continues to put on events like it I can only see them growing more and more. If there was an MLG anywhere in Ontario, Canada, I would definitely drop everything and sleep on the streets if I needed to to go to it =D Especially with the great player exchange going on between GOM and MLG. I tend not to follow the foreign scene too much because I think the quality of play is higher in the GSL, but if MLG's got the top players, well.. there's no excuse not to watch =D
I'm definitely very excited to see what announcements come out of all this teasing!
|
where do you think they'd expand to in south america? honestly i'd perfer canada if possible but they might have some weird laws making that difficult and i don;t really know much of anything about what the starcraft scene is in south america.
|
good read i'm really positive for the future of mlg/gom and day9/tasteless are eye candy enough i think <3
|
wow amazing interview, great job :D
|
|
Well a lot of announcements are going to come up this year from MLG and GSL ~~~~ cannot wait!!!
|
Awesome interivew, and its pretty goddamn awesome that Sundance took the time to clarify some stuff. Its looking good for the future, methinks :D
|
Tasteless is my favorite eye candy
|
This is great. I was hoping after the success of LoL at Dreamhack we'd see it at MLG and a month later here's exactly the announcement I was waiting for.
The expansion into South America is exciting too. I can't think of any well-known progamers from that region besides Fenix. I'm hoping there's some undiscovered talent down there.
|
Awsome work!! MLGs future is looking good
|
We need more people like him in the scene.
|
Sundance seriously is doing good things with MLG, it's actually a pretty respected tournament now for a lot of people that used to dislike them. They need to keep it up and keep improving at this rate. Sadly the popularity of LoL is way above it's competitive viability, but hopefully they can transition it straight into dota 2.
|
I like Sundance, he seems to have a good brain. He cares about the scene and doesn't look at Esports purely as a way to increase profits.

In the case of female cast members, I think what's important is to have people who know a lot about the game to increase the quality of production. You have to think of it within that scope of not damaging the production. I think NASL lacked the professional experience to a certain extent in that regard.
NEED MOAR JULIE ALEXANDRIA.
I actually friggin love both MLG and Sundance. They had a shit ton of problems, pulled through and held the best lan in NA. Keep it up guys, awesome interview.

Being italian makes him even smarter! Great work dude!

Such a great interview, Sundance really wants to get invested with the SC2 community and put out the best competition for all of us, NASL can learn a thing or two from MLG.

expand MLG to EU and host in the UK!!!

great interview, sundance is a baller =)

The SC2 scene is the first progaming scene I've ever followed. Last year, it seemed GSL was the only major SC2 tournament worth something, but MLG has improved (their SC2 tournament) with every event, and lately with their GSL partnership I feel like they've become the best NA tournament and a worthy counterpart to Korea. It seems Sundance is the man behind much of this improvement, so lots of respect to you, sir. I am happy to hear that MLG and GSL are bringing their partnership to new levels, and I look forward to seeing how both will improve in the future.

Yeah, I think we should all have a lot of respect for the guy. Concerning the extension of MLG in south america, i'd guess it would be argentina or brazil.

Thanks a lot for the translation Milkis.
|
Thanks Milkis and thanks Sundance for correcting the original translation. MLG is lucky to have the best CEO in esports right now.
|
Sundance, if you could somehow get MLG to be broadcasted on Indonesian/Indian tv in English, I will love you to the end of time.
Saying this because I agree with your internet point. It is a nightmare to get streams to run nicely in south/SE asia due to bad internet. Also, the caps in those countries are extremely tight.
|
Very nice interview. Props to both MLG and Sundance for improving so much in the past year, even in the last few months. Hopefully Anaheim is even better than Columbus, although I can't see much that can be improved, at least from a stream spectator view.
|
Nice interview, thanks for translating I totally agree with Sundance about the "knowledgeable eye candy" thing.
I'm not really a fan of LoL but I definitely look forward to watching some competitive GoW 3. Also if you plan to add fighting games, please consider KOF13 or MVC3.

so no lindsay at MLG? A million fanboys just had their hearts crushed.

I wonder if MLG is going to jump on the LoL bandwagon similar to what happened with SC2 last summer? From seeing how much success was had in the Dreamhack LoL tournament I feel MLG would definately want to tap into that market NOW.
|
I think broadcasting MLG in Korean via GOMTV or some other platform would be genius and another fabulous way to market it in other communities. Perhaps having a delayed stream available to European viewers too.
|
I love sundances answer on the Kpop/female answer. I'd rather have someone knowledgeable then anything else, gender does not matter.

man, these partnerships are going to be so amazing for esports. MLG has the passionate fans, and GSL has the population (although they both have each quality to a lesser extent). Gom is going to teach these guys a lot of tricks on how to produce such popularity.
Don't think me stupid, i know GSL is widely accepted in big part due to the korean culture, but imagine how much MLG can do with such a powerful role model.

If you are a fan of esports this guy is on our side, and its a great feeling. Hope that they can make MLG profitable (if it already isn't) so that the tournaments and good production quality continue.

I respect him for this answer, and what he has done with this tournament. We don't need eye candy if it means hurting the production. I have been watching these since Raleigh last year (first mlg w/starcraft 2) and it has improved every time except for the Dallas incident. And the fact that MLG was able to rebound like that after the Dallas incident is amazing. I would imagine that they are profitable now, or very close. We have Sundance to thank for that.
|
I still hate MLG for buying and subsequently killing Gotfrag, but at least the last MLG had some pretty good SC2 games.
|
Through IMG we began worldwide broadcasts -- to Asia, the Middle East, even to India. While internet broadcasts are common in Korea, it's not like that overseas quite yet. It's an important opportunity to expand the market, and there's a possibility that in the future MLG will open not only in North America but also in South America and the Middle East.
aha, he knows I'm watching :D! . I hope I dont hit my internet download limit by the time mlg starts this month, that will be sad
Great interview though thanks!
|
Thanks for the interview. It's interesting to hear that they will be going to South America (or just out of NA in general).... I really hope it doesn't take away from the NA events, though even if it does it will still likely be good. Adding LoL is to be expected, but it is nice to see they will also be adding fighter games even though I'm not a big fan of them. Gears of War on the other hand sounds shaky.
|
Nice read. Thanks Milkis ^^
|
Lol EN -> EN.
Sundance has always seemed to have that spice in his interviews, not afraid to sneak in jabs at his competitors, gotta like him about that.
Glad to see MLG's got some really big plans.
|
Great interview! MLG continues to keep me upbeat and excited about the future of foreign SC2 tournaments and stuff, and even GSL. This partnership... i feel like we've only scratched the surface of the potential awesomeness which it could end up providing.
Thanks for the clarification edits too, that goes a long way toward stopping a thread from becoming a shitstorm of ignorant criticism and such.

Thank you Sundance. Would love some hot chick doing the interviews, but since this is a geek weekend, it needs to have SC2 relevance(as in the one asking questions needs to know what to ask, aka know SC2), else why would I bother watching SC2, I could watch something else with a lot more skin anyway.
Excited about the future of MLG-SC, after a really crappy start, it really seems like they care and are willing to acknowledge their startup shortcomings to produce better product. Love when people are mature enough to do that, only way to grow. <3
