(This Interview is made by www.sc2.com.cn ) profile: Name: MC (장민철/张敏哲/Jang Min Chul) Race: Protoss Team:oGs DOB: Jun. 17th, 1991 Nickname:Flounder Career:MBCGame HERO,oGs Achievements: 2010.12 GSL Code S: Champion 2011.03 GSL 2011 March: Champion 2011.04 DreamHack Stockholm: Champion
Part I:The Road of Growth MC in life is not so aggressive as in match. He is more like a common boy who like SC2, and to pursue his dream with his best effort
Once I also thought that is this the way I should go further? Did I make a right choice? MC is not alone. Though he is considered as "aggressive emperor" in after-match interviews, he has many good friends in life
Many people know oGsMC for his confidence he show in and out the matchfield and his excellent opration with his great macro in the match. However, the person who left the stable enviroments of the SC:BW for SC2 with a dream of being a top pro, did not go well at the early days. MC, a 20-year-old pro, has faced many choices during his lifetime, but fortunately the characteristic young guy is backed up by his family and many warm-hearted friends when he was down... + Show Spoiler + sc2.com.cn(S): Now that you are just 20 years old, could you tell us why did you want to be an esports programmer? oGsMC(M): The story began since I was a junior middle school student. My friends around said that I have good talent on game and they encouraged me to be a pro, and I thought that it would be an interesting challenge to be a pro, thus you can see who I am now--a pro.
S: Well, what's your parents' view torward you as a player? Could you talk about your family? M: I have no idea that the view hold by Chinese parents, at least all of my family members like e-sports very much. They gave their great support to my decision. As for my family, I was grown up in a single-parent family. I lived with my mom before I live into my team's dorm.
S: It seems that your mom gave you much support. We know that you were a member of MBC HERO from SC:BW before you stepped into the field of SC2. The experience of being a SC:BW pro has brought you something? And your reason to leave SC:BW for SC2? M: I think it was a great pratice to me, the experience of being a pro spured me to manage the details of match, it was a key point, what's more, it made me more muture in spirit. As to SC2, Pusan[S.G] and Jaehoon for MBC HERO brough me with helpful advice. Due to I did not catch the chances in SC:BW and got excellent achievements neither, I made up my mind to be a SC pro when I heard about the opening of GSL. July and Jaehoon gave me many suggestions during that time, and till now I am very grateful to them.
S: After you stepped into SC2, the best performance in the former 2 seasons was the first round of GSL 32. Did you feel pressure at that time? M: I was quite nervous at the beginning of the match. When I was down and out I also thought: is this the road I should walk forward? Did I really make a right choice? But I was lucky, the analysis and advice from my coach TheWind, my teammates oGsGON, oGsLeader had make up my mind to work harder, thus I went well through the tough days.
S: Do you still keep in touch with SC:BW pros? Do they also play SC2 at their spare time? Or do they have the intensions to find their shinning time in SC2? M: The protoss players of MBC HERO still keep tight touch with me, but they are busy in practising and fighting in SC:BW, thus they rarely play SC2.
Part II: GSL
The shinning achievements he got came from his hard work. Though there are still many SC:BW players do not go for SC2, it is believed that they would be motivated by MC's success
I am tired of PVP now, sometimes they have nothing to do with your strength.
If someone asks who is the best protoss player in the world, I think the majority of fans and players will say: MC. His good management on both overall situations and details impress almost every protoss fans/players
The most should be cared about is MC's performance in match, and MC himself talked much through MSN: from the complaint about tight tournament to the views toward MarineKing, from his happiness of planning his marriage to his impression to Chinese famous player Sky. With the interview we know much more details of the best protoss in the world: he is not only an agressive player in match, but also an eloquent sunny boy in life...
MC was out in the first round of GSL May, the brutal up/down matches. It is believed that this little frustration will bring us with a more mature MC + Show Spoiler + S: You are the only player won twice GSL by far, and you also were the winner of DreamHack Stockholm. How do you arrange the prize? M: First I bought a car with the GSL prize for my mum, and now my goal is buy a house for my family. Of course I should gain more champions in future if I want to realize it. In addition, after I get the salary for oGs team, I also plan to buy a car for myself. and last I have started to plan my future marriage.
S: You are also the only protoss player who got the champion. But the truth is that many protoss player usually in the lower hand when against other two races. Do you agree with that? As a pro, do you feel satisfied with the balance of SC2? MC: When against other two races, your strategies and strengthes are very important factors. But to be honest, I am tired of PVP now, because the units' restriction to each other in SC2 is quite serious, especially in PVP. Thus the results of the match have nothing to do with players level and strengths. Anyhow, I am satisfied with current racial balance. Even though I use a race that I am not good at, I believe that I will conquer them with my great power. S: It seem that GSL is the most competitive tournament by far. But there is a voice comes from players that the procession of GSL is too tight to practise, and fans also feel tired about so many matches. How do you think about that as a player? M: Now I have to participate in five important SC2 tournaments, that is to say I have to fight almost every day. So many tournaments make me could not show my best performance in match occasionally. I have to admit that there really are a mount of tournaments which bring inconvenience to some players thus some complaints from them. However, for the other side, it proves the tournaments is blooming and offers many chances for players to show them. So I am very glad now, though I think I need a good rest, for it is very tough to practise and fight every day.
S: Of course we also noticed that GomTV is trying to make GSL better. And it is also a good approach to introduce some high-quality maped made by third parties into GSL. Could you give some words to GSL maps? Do you think there is some maps which imbalanced? M: The maps used in GSL is very good, which have better balance compared with those used in ladder. When I recalled matches in the past, it was very difficult for protoss and zerg in the map Steppes of War and Delta Quadrant.
S: Recently Terran players begain to use Tech openning while against Protoss. Could you tell us some tips to this strategy for common players? M: haha, it is a nice question. All I could say is that Protoss players need to produce much mech units and some units from Stargate, and remember that the amount of zealot must be sufficient. S: One member from out forum wants to ask you that the difficulties of the PVZ and PVT, and which kind of racial play you think is more difficult? M: I think it would be difficult for players on the open place at your expanded base while PVZ, and it is difficult to scout while PVT. The difficulties of the match depends on your rival.
S: In the semi-finals of the GSL WC you were 2:3 MarineKing. How do you think this Terran players who owns numbers of fans just like you? M: He is an excellent players, and I could say that he is the strongest Terran players now, at the same time he is one of my favourite players. I think he will become a competitive players to me one day.
S: Are you familiar with Chinese player Loner? How many Chinese players do you know? M: I am very familiar with the name Loner. A Chinese players impresses me is War3 player Sky. As far as I know he is a famous Human player. I think it would be fun if he could come for SC2.
Part III: Aggressive Emperor
In the final of GSL March, MC defeated TSL_Rain and won his first GSL Champion, MC show his unique celebrate gesture before the ending of the match "The gesture I did after winner is to add something interesting, 'coz something need to be done by someone after all"
Anyhow, MC's show indeed add something interesting for audience to talk about, which enrich matches in return Perhaps some other people feel impressive to MC not because his achievements nor his operation and strategy in match, but the GIF series pictures of his MC-style celebrate gestures which became popular around fans. Wether MC himself denies he is "aggressive" or not, he has become one popular star who could "making" entertaining topic in the world of SC2... + Show Spoiler + S: You have a lot of fans in China. They give you a nickname "Aggressive Emperor" because of your impressive gestures. Do you like it? Is this your true characteristic even in your daily life? M: Well, I am kina dislike it. In fact I am not an aggressive person. All the gestures I did is to add something interesting for the match, 'coz something need to be done by someone after all, then I did it. The word so-called "aggressive" appears merely in the match, because I am a peaceful person in life and isn't that "aggressive". But I like people call me "Emperor", it seems I am very powerful. LOL. S: You are so charming. I still remember that you said you are the most powerful Protoss before GSL2 tournament. Why are you so confident? M: I gained much confidence from practice, because everyone will think he is the best if he win many times in practice at usual. S: Many top commentators of SC2 praised many times that you are the most excellent player who manage the details. Can you tell us how do you achieve them? M: I think the most factor is that I was a SC:BW pro in the past. When you match in SC:BW, you much deal with the details well so I think the experience of SC:BW influenced me greatly.
S: You are so modest, it is unlike what we watched from matches. As the punishment of your humility, I want to ask that do you have a girlfriend? You must tell me without a lie. M: Yes I have. We have confirmed our relationship for one month.(Bless MC!)
S: Talk more about your girlfriend, how do you know her? Is she also a E-sports player? I know you are busy in practising and tournament, how do you arrange your career and your girlfriend? M: We knew each other through a community website, she is not a player. As for thers, we usually date when I have a rest. I know that my fans care about my romantic affairs, but I am sorry that it is all I can say.
Part IV: oGs Team
As the only one who won GSL Champion. MC is undoubtedly the best player at oGs. Though Nada is there, MC is still unbreakable "Set up: 11 AM; Go to bed: 3 AM, this is MC's daily routine"
The team oGs which MC in is currently one of the best SC2 team in South Korea, and oGs own the most players who stay in Code S. As the No.1 players of oGs, MC frankly said that the relationship between he and Nada, one former superstar in SC:BW, is not competition, and MC then show us his specified daily schedule in his team... + Show Spoiler + S: Who is your close friend in your team? Nada is another very famous player in your team, do you consider his as your potential competitor in secret while you practising or match? M: I get well along with everybody. But I think it will be Zenio if I have to make a selection, we are bosom friends, and then Kkoma. As for Nada, I don't think we compete secretly. To pro it needs continous practice and work hard thus the achievements could be won.
S: Could you tell us how to arrange your training? Do you need much time to practise? M: OK. I set up at 11 am; 11-12 washing and have lunch' 12-16:30 the first half of practice; 16:30-19 sports and leisure; 19-23 second half of practice; 23-3 am free practice. I practise on ladder just for find my sence and feeling; I devote more energy into the practice with my teammates.
S: How do you and your teammates kill your spare time? M: for example, we practse some maps or go to restaurant together, but most of my spare time is one person along. As for something to eat, my teammates very good at that. They like to eat something expensive and delicious.
Part V: Campaign Overseas
MC is not content with his achievements he got from GSL, he casts his focus to the world The embitious Mc not only cast his eyes to GSL in south Korea, but also the growthing tournaments around the world as the development of SC2. What's more, MC shows his wish that know Chinese culture through his Chinese fans...
His unique characterisitics brings lots of fans while some others think he is too aggressive to be liked. Whatever, MC will continue his behaviors to bring fun to others + Show Spoiler + S: Do you think Korean players will win all champions of SC2 world tounaments just as SC:BW? M: Indeed it is now, after all, Korea is my homeland. And I don't think non-Korean players will bring some pressure to Korean players in the near future.
S: You defeated White-Ra twice recently. Does it have any difference to against foreign players compared with GSL? M: Nothing big different. But it will be a kind of psychological combat after you face a rival many times. S: Last time you go for the DreamHack in Jinro's homeland Sweden, did you encounter something fun? M: It was a long time since Jinro left his home last time, so he went home straightly after the match. Huk, TLO and me once played at a cyber space, it was very interesting.
S: The StarWar which will be started soon. As an invited player, who do you think are your competitors? M: I think they are MVP or MarineKing.
S: The SC2 Server ran several days ago and Chinese Battle.net is online recently, We believe that there will be more SC2 tournaments. Do you have such plans which take part in them in the future? M: I will if my agenda is possible. I realize that I have so many fans in China with the help of your interview.
S: SC2 has become the formal game of WCG, do you think SC2 will surpass SC:BW in WCG in future? M: It is obvious. I think SC2 has surpassed SC:BW outside Korea.
S: Any words to your Chinese fans? M: I don't know much about China, but I will know Chinese culture through my fans. I will work hard to be a better player. Thanks for your support all the time!

Images not quite working. MC totally being straight-up.
|
can you see the pics? I don't know why I couldn't see them....
|
Damn, even in SC2, Jaehoon gets credited for his help. PvX Enigma ftw!
And it seems he's been engaged for a month now. Or at least that's what I gathered.
|
Wow that was so good, it was wierd how he doesnt think his best race is protoss."Even though I use a race that I am not good at" I feel as though it suits him so well.

Just copy the image url and use the Upload Image button, paste the URL into the box instead of chosing a file.
Nice interview too, a lot of other information you normally do not see and it is cool to see the Chinese scene getting excited for their version of SC2.
|
Did I read that right, he is getting married? I can't believe that question wasn't followed up.
|
"Even though I use a race that I am not good at" hmm it would be very interesting to see him play as Terran or Zerg, but I guess he was just being modest perhaps
amazing interview, thanks for posting it
|
Great interview, thanks! It really goes to show the inside of MC's mind; I really appreciate how he takes care of his family first and foremost before himself.
|
Yay MC is such a nice guy.
|
Nice interview, though the images are not loading either for me.
|
|
Hmm a girlfriend, I hope the same thing that happened to Stork won't happen to MC.
|
|
great interview, lengthy with good questions and some interesting answers.
"eloquent sunny boy in life..." Made me laugh, I have no idea why but it sounds funny to me
I wonder though, at the beginning it says that he is planning his marriage and towards the end he gets the question if he has a girlfriend. Did I miss something or is it a matter of lost in translation?
edit: oh and the pictures are working now
|
Thanks for Torte de Lini and Kralic , I re-uploaded the pic, now you can see it.
BTW, MC is just planning his marriage, that means he needs to prepare something for his future marriage life such as car, house and other things.
Perhaps he will get married several years later.....

He's just in the Up-and-Down matches; don't count him out of Code S just yet.
**NOTE: It is not a spoiler to talk about a highly-discussed upset from 2 days ago involving the player who is the topic of the thread.
|
Great interview. Really hope people take the time to try and learn about MC as a person. Seems like a really good guy.
Two choice quotes:
"I use a race that I am not good at"
"But I think it will be Zenio if I have to make a selection, we are bosom friends"

Thanks for posting this interview. I think a lot of people on TL probably saw his "showman" personality and instantly disliked him for being arrogant.

All of the text below each picture does NOT translate correctly what is written in the pictures... I think OP may have had a issue with synchronising the translation with the images.
if I have time I might translate the text written in each picture, kinda ceebs though

I liked the interview, MC always seems so funny in his interviews.
|
I meant to say hes out of the tournament. my bads, either way I think he should go to MLG
|
Cool read, MC is so straight-up.
|
Really nice interview, thanks for all the effort you put into it
|
Just like most thing in life, you can't judge a person based on what they do during a broadcast.
|
That was a really interesting read, it's funny how he switches from being cocky to modest all the time. I guess for the entertainment value as he said... and he practices up to 12 and a half hours a day? I think I have some work to do...
|
This interview is exactly why it pisses me off so much when people hate on MC for being "arrogant". He's not like that in real life, he just acts like he does for show. There's the confirmation right there, in the friggin' interview. I've been waiting for something like this - now I'll just send a link to this interview to haters to educate them on how MC really is. It's just a shame when a player is so unfairly judged by people when he's actually a nice guy. Pisses me off so much. People just look at interviews and his winning ceremonies and make judgments about his character based on those. It's incredibly ignorant.
|
It's nice to see interviews on a personal level like this to really show what someone is actually like. It would be nice to see more of these around
|

Pretty sure that's not what he meant. I think it should read something like "Even if I used a race which I'm not good with (zerg, terran), I believe that I would conquer them [my opponents] with my great power.
He was talking about balance, so what I understood from it was that his race was a non-factor in him being so dominant lately; he's claiming that he would have had as much success had he played another race. Basically, he didn't want his dominance to be discredited because of a potential imbalance in the game.
It's probably one of those things that was lost in translation!
By the way that was my first post, yay!
|
Very good interview and translation.
But I think the word " 囂張" in Chinese is more close to "Arrogant" than "Aggressive".
And because someone is going to translate the text below the picture, I'd like to share some load.
Pictrure1: "In daily life, oGsMC lacks his arrogance and power he showed in the match. Most of the time, he looks more like an ordinary big boy who loves games, merely that he chased his dream in e-Sports much harder (than the others)."
Picture2: "MC is not fighting alone. Though he showed us arrogant image in the matches and interviews, in real life he has many good friends."
e-Sport fighting!!
|
hi guys, I have translated the words in the pics and add them with the italic character, enjoy them!

张敏哲 is read as Zhang Min Zhe in Chinese. Chinese fans probably call him 张敏哲 in Chinese as it sounds similar in pronunciation to Jang Min Chul in Korean.
|
Really nice interview. Go MC! :D
|
All MC haters cannot continue to hate after reading this interview Nice read
|
What, MC is getting marries? What kind of interviewer drops a bomb like that and doesn't ask a question to follow it up!? Any info about it? Also, Tyler, White-Ra and now MC.... i'm starting to see a pattern..

oGsMC <3. I love that he's got a such a positive attitude but also willing to play the bad guy on the e-scene.
|
Thank you for the translation vizhi_j <3

What an awesome interview. As a member of the MC fanclub, I have to say I enjoyed this!

July is such great mentor and player

Actually it's not aggressive Emperor, it's cocky Emperor

I like his shoutout to Sky, that guy is one of the only players to challenge Moon and Grubby. I sure do hope he makes the switch to SC2.

jaehoon truly the enigma.

Wow MC, I'm your fan now!

I think the title is misleading, it should be "arrogant/cocky", not aggressive emperor.

Really nice to see the real Min Chul.

Although it took me awhile to convince myself to read all of this, I am very happy I did! This has been what seems to be one of the most genuine insight on the life of a player in some time.

It's not really a version since it's just the Mandarin reading of hanja that represent a Korean's name is what I'm saying. Korean names are actually sino-korean readings of hanja so you could argue that from a graphocentric point of view it's essentially the same (of course the pronunciation is a little bit different even if very similar at times).

How cool is that me and MC have the same birthday I was just born 1 year earlier. ha maybe Ill be the next protoss god

People just look at interviews and his winning ceremonies and make judgments about his character based on those. It's incredibly ignorant. Yea, lots of ppl are so ignorant. I always like MC after each of his interview, we can see his character much better than the trash talk in pre-game.

Dunno I think you're reading too much from the 'I have started to plan my future marriage.' It seems like he just wants to have a money buffert for when he's getting a family. Obviously you don't have a super steady income for the rest of your life when you're a progamer. I dunno though.

The Engrish in this is hilarious; very well done. I demand all interviews be conducted in this manner, even with English-speaking players!

Loved it. Thank you. Edit: This is awful kind for my Satan post.

Well, I always thought he was cocky and arrogant, but ya'know, this interview makes him seem like a good kid.
