"The sound proofing on stage isn't perfect, I could actually hear that he was making a voidray in the first game"
Wasn't this something that was complained about last MLG? That is pretty huge, hearing "Voidray" is pretty harsh for whoever hes going up against, but what if it was something like "DT" or "Banshee", that is game ending...
Were there any efforts made to actually improve the sound proofing situation?
The MLG admins were already noted and no more reports came out afterwards that player could continue hearing the sound. So they probably fixed it already.
He told admins after the match, that is why they stopped pumping the casters into the crowd. (Hence when JP was casting he asked people to make noise for Tyler and no one cheered **They could no longer hear them**)
Seems like investing in a pair of noise-canceling headsets like the ones that ground traffic controllers use on aircraft carriers would seem like a no brainer. Sadly it doesn't seem like that's the case.

Well, it seems to me like MLG is producing epic fails in all aspects of their little event.

ya i was there last night and it was pretty terrible. They had halo blasting right next to us and the caster sound completely off and the game sound pretty low with random speakers going out and back in over and over. I understand they are trying to not let the players hear the casters but there are better solutions than screwing over the fans that took the time and money to come out and watch it in person.
I know the budget is already spent but they really need to get some soundproof booths ASAP. Did GOM recently build new booths or did they just reskin their old ones? If they're new then maybe GSL can make a discount sale to MLG.

This is so disappointing. It seems like MLG is not learning from their past events.

So... you would like the players to hear the casters.

No, but I'd like the spectators to actually hear the game. :|

Booths are NOT a possibility for MLG, they don't have the space on their trucks to move them across country, They should probably have the players use some noise canceling headphones but then they have problems with the players not being able to wear their sponsors headsets.

Are you saying there are only two possible choices? I dont think so, they can have booths for example. Another possibility is noise cancelling headphones.
Actually i was there for the match and Day9 and Wheat were both very loud compared to the other casts, i dont doubt he heard them as the CoD players on the other side of the room heard it as well.
After that game they turned it down so low no one in the audience could hear except the occasional loud starcraft noise. Even today i could not hear a damn thing. They said the matches would start at 10 am, but nothing was even showcased until noon, and even then you had to wait 15 minutes for the players to get ready and they were such fast matches(huk OWNED both of them on one base.) they werent worth the wait. The next one ended up getting so much lag, everyone was waiting for at least 2 hours for the next match, Grubby vs DDE, in fact I left the event out of sheer boredom, im not sure what happened in that match yet
I am a little pissed I drove all the way out here and paid for a ticket. I don't really care if this is an improvement over last year when it seems to be so slapped together at the last minute. It takes all of 5 minutes to find out if the players will be able to hear the commentators. Instead they play the first game with commenting and then pull the commentators with no official announcement to the audience as to what is going on. If they can't afford to sound proof in some way at LEAST plan ahead and prepare for it SOMEHOW. Instead we get no official explanation and they cut in and out to the commentators mid-sentence between games.
The whole thing is extremely amateurish.
On the plus side I've been able to meet several cool players, other than that I would rather have stayed home and watched the stream. Though I hear that is fail too.

Noise cancelling headphones don't work that way. They don't do anything for inconsistent sounds like speech. If headphones could do that it would be an easy fix for MLG but more costly measures need to be taken to soundproof, mainly boothes (or not broadcasting the commentators to the crowd works too.)

there are tons of in ear noise canceling earphones that they could use for the showmatches and still have the sponsor headphones over those. I'm sure there are many other solutions I am not even aware of that are less costly than having booths, though that would be the ideal solution.

They are using noise-cancelling earbuds with headphones over them already. Obviously that is insufficient. As stated above, noise-cancelling technology doesn't really work for inconsistent sounds.
5:30... Still no stage match since Grubby vs DDE. Halo and COD playing stage matches all day long. Everyone reverting to watching non stage matches from a distance over player's shoulders. Someone at MLG really should be replaced.
Tournaments have always been about the players, most don't even have streaming done. GOM has booths but they even made immediate changes when players were getting visual/crowd reactions.
I don't see why MLG couldn't have the players some where else instead of main stage, or at least have the players matches that are streamed else where in the venue, or even some booth around the whole stage. It just all boils down to MLG not putting the effort into these things before hand.
The matches are still being streamed, and the players will be out after the games, I don't see it as a big compromise.
IdrA showing he is not just BM behind the keyboard. This interview gave him a lot of points :> +he's been working out and his presence is now more commanding and manly <3

This is depressing Living in the 3rd world (Greece) I always thought MLG was a top tier tournament. This seriously sounds like something that has been put together by Greeks, the most unorganized and irresponsible country Europe has to offer.
Although I think that if SC2 had LAN support most of these issues could of been avoided, but as Blizzard said, BNET2.0 is gonna be so good you won't need LAN. So this failed MLG is the result of Blizzard's greed combined with poor tournament organization.

If you noticed, in his matches against Kiwikaki, IdrA had only earbuds on, likely so he could use crowd noise/faint caster sounds to his advantage.

Well theres another way, how the BW guys do it is that they have those giant mufflers and then put a pair of earphones under them, and apparently it works quite well

I feel you man, exactly like Greece
Whoa, take it easy guys. I have to say that as far as Starcraft II tournaments go,the Greek community has exceeded my expectations so far. ^^

Yes, I always thought Greeks were proud people? Why so in the dumps?
Idra looks a bit buffer or is it just me? love the jackass moment. Hearing voidray sucks for socke, but he also saw the voidray due to the overlord positioning idra had at socke's base. MLG should probably spend the extra money for soundproff headsets, the thing about that is,they need to buy a headset for each player that will be cast and probably let them take it home. Because if they share and get sick. someone could sue MLG for that. And we know how sue-happy american's are.

MLG getting better every year.
way to go!
can't imagine how bad the previous year was... lol
Back at the hotel because the only interesting games are on tiny screens surrounded by tons of people. They have been showing replays on the main screen which started to get old. On top of the sound issues they have been having lag problems on the two main stage computers and it looks like they've abandoned them at least for the day. Hard to imagine why those two aren't working and the others all seem fine, I wouldn't be surprised if they are using wireless on those and something is interfering.
Noise canceling headphones don't work for this kind of thing. The isolate a specific frequency band that is generally considered "noise" and produce frequencies at the opposite phase (so the nodes don't line up, causing destructive interference). What this does is make things less noisy, but they don't work well in the frequency band associated with the human voice (because they're not designed to). So they might actually make things worse. The air traffic controller headsets are probably really good, but whos going to wear them on stage? The set up this year is actually pretty good. The speakers are in front of the players facing out toward the audience in a gigantic hall filled with people, carpet, and non-reflective surfaces. There's also at least 80 dbs of ambient noise to cover everything up. I find it hard to believe that the players can hear anything from the main stage, even without headphones. But if they say they can, I believe them. What they should do is require CLOSED BACKED headphone which simply attenuate sound, and require a minimum volume of music (whether game music or the players choosing) and game sounds. Closed back headphones are readily available, are made by every good sound company (they're what are used in recording studios) and are made by many of the sponsors (if that's an issue- I know Steel Series makes at least 2 different models). I think that would solve everything. The issue is not about sound proofing or noise canceling, it's about masking sound. That's exactly what this solution would do. And for the record, iDra was wearing earbuds during that match which is why hear could apparently hear everything. He also saw the voidray with an overlord as soon as it was done building (so it didn't really change the game much).
They could just get some large speakers and blast the people playing on the mainstage with whitenoise. It would solve it pretty well and unless they are casting really close no one else could hear it.
