From what I can see, one of the major reasons SC2 or even RTS aren't popular in Japan is clearly language barrier. At least a few of my friends refused to play and they mentioned they won't be enjoying games in English. Blizzard needs to release Japanese version.

The Japanese version of BW was a complete failure. I think Blizzard has learned its lesson about Japan and Starcraft.

SC2 not being released in Japan with localization had nothing to do with BW sales in Japan but mainly WoW release.
Capcom, who publishes Blizzard games in Japan had screwed WoW release in Japan because they wanted to protect their own game Monster Hunter. Blizzard and Capcom stopped co-operation and Blizzard also gave up Japanese market since then.

Totally true, but Blizzard should not close eyes on us! Now more and more people getting into Starcraft in Japan, community grows bigger and bigger. People just don't really know about Starcraft phenomenon but when they hear about it and try it they continue to play. Also a lot of people promoting Starcraft as much as they can:D players are streaming, casters do cast on niconico douga, YouTube, tournaments are held! Japan is moving towards Starcraft and if Blizzard could make the movement more smoother by making an Japanese version of the game it will be so cool!!

Yeah, Japanese players are really sparse. There are very few high levelled Japanese players, although Kur0a is really really good. I would love to see what would happen if the Japanese players all moved into a team house type thing and trained like the Koreans do. I think they have huge potential to be great.

So why is SC2 huge in S.Korea and not super huge in Japan?
I actually played the original WarCraft - Orcs v Humans back in 1995!

I'm not an expert, but I believe it's because Japan has a bigger Arcade scene, while Korea has their PC Bangs.

Try tweeting @Blizzard and @Starcraft, sending emails and posting on their forums for Japanese support! I sent them a tweet, you should too.

Korea has/had a lot of arcades as well - it's more about PC/Online gaming not being that big in Japan I think.

I believe MMOs like Final Fantasy was a bit popular, but yea PC gaming is not big over there. The biggest problem is that there's never been much of a competitive scene comparable to the western scenes. There are no "teams" or "clans" and so no competitive spirit, barring the arcade community.

Keep going and growing guys, I really hope that Blizzard will release HotS and LotV in Japan! Japanese progamers.. sounds scary, given the fact that they are one of the most hardworking people in the world =)

By the way, how is Diablo III doing in Japan at the moment?
Only way to know the future is to make it.

apparently d3 is selling relatively well
http://akiba-pc.watch.impress.co.jp/hotline/20120519/etc_diablo.html

from what i can read they are selling some overpricing boxes (import) and emptied their stock a few times.
(akiba/tokyo. some kind of otaku/techie mecca)

http://www.amazon.co.jp/Blizzard-Entertainment-Diablo-III-輸入版/dp/B00178630A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337754066&sr=8-1
still pretty niche, seen by the complete evaluations you get in the amazon commentaries

they don't sell it on rakuten - http://global.rakuten.com/en/search?pf=&pt=&f=0&fs=0&vm=2&sm=0&st=&tl=0&k=diablo

would be interesting for me, if the japanese scene became bigger, cause a year before sc2 was out, I was so into the anime stuff by doing subtitling for some groups, and know some japanese [I'm currently retired from fansubbing]...

so if you guys do get big I can help do translating and would just be in general interesting for me because I went from japanese stuff -> korean stuff when I went into sc2 and all ._. idk

best of luck to you guys~

You are right in general, but we actually have some teams: ZaC, ESC, PlayGG. 4 Japanese players are currently playing in German team "Type Gaming" ENZA, PsiArc, nemuke and breek. Also there are quite a few players who are masters on Korean server. It feels like the scene gradually growing bigger but it is very slow. There are no commercials or adds any where to be seen, only people who follows PC gaming knows about Starcraft. People who do not get any information about the game will never know about it...
