Lefty here, article is very helpful, not to mention the fact that I'm Zerg and trying to get my hotkeys up. I've used the fact that I'm a lefty as a crutch for a long time but hopefully because of SC2 and being zerg I'll be able to overcome it. I have had issues in the past where I flip my mouse button or remap keys, however once I leave my house I'm at a huge disadvantage so I try to learn to use the defaults.

lefty here, man up and play right handed

although, after reading more of the comments, i guess im not a true lefty, just moreso lefty than righty

the default setup doesnt bother me but im sure everyone can see that the non-writing hand will be able to move its fingers faster than their writing hand

for us lefty that means its the slower fingers on keyboard, faster on mouse

cant be too detrimental to your play imo, (master league here playing default) so its just down to practice, only + side is that the left hand on keyboard will be stronger and have more dexterity ^^

thx for the clear OP, this has been on my mind many times since i'm left handed as well, but like most lefty's i just play right handed.

I've noticed that Naniwa is the only pro to use a left handed set up and i wonder if he always played like that or at some point transitioned to it.

I'm tempted to try and switch cause i played a shitload of pool and snooker also and i trained myself to be two handed there also, although that didn't feel as ackward as it did just now when i put my mouse on the left to test how it would feel

I'm going to try this maybe for a few weeks and see how fast it feels natural, i'll keep you posted

That's truly interesting, I was born lefty, but the Soviet Union decided it wasn't a good idea so I got "converted", now I'm able to use both hands and I was interested in developing my left hand for the mouse for gaming too.
Thanks for making my life challenge easier

Athene actually uses his mouse on his left hand even though he's right handed. He uses the exact set-up as you except he does it on purpose because as you said, keyboard APM is more important than mouse APM. It takes a lot of time to get used to it though.

I'm a true lefty , I do everything left handed besides using the mouse. It's probably because when my parents bought me my first computer 16 years ago they didn't actually have any idea about computers and didn't let me know you could use the mouse left handed. Funny thing is 10 years ago i broke my right hand and had to use the mouse lefthanded for a while , so now i'm basically dexterous with both hands in using the mouse. Imo it turned into an advantage because strangely , I have no dexterity problems using my mouse with my right hand and it gives me even more keyboard dexterity because I use my main hand on it. Now for my RTS background , I played Warcraft 3 since launch till a couple of years before Starcraft 2 came out at a high lvl but non professionally, and I ended the last ladder season at 3500 masters. In conclusion , (I know this is a bit off topic) it's quite possible to use the normal peripheral configuration at no handicap even if you are left handed. Main disadvantages of your non main hand is strength. So if you're a SC2, left handed,using the normal mouse keyboard configuration, and thinking you might do better playing with your mouse left handed , there should be no disadvantage to use them in a right handed config.

Well, not like true lefties are common anyways, almost everyone can use both hands nearly equally.

Sorry, but that is just blatantly wrong. Most people are righthanded, and a small percentage is lefties. It is true that most people can LEARN to use both hands pretty good, with a lot of practice. Example of this is lefthanded people from back in the days where you learned how to write with ink. Since you write from left to right in the west, they had to learn how to write with the right hand and as a result of this they are ambidextrous.

I am a lefthandend person and I use my left hand for everything, except gaming since I started using my right hand when I was a kiddo and then I just learned how to control it. But that doesn't mean I can write anything at all with my right hand.

I just forced myself to play right handed since I was 12, like how lefties of old were forced to learn to write right handed (both my parents). 17 years later I'm still really happy with that decision. When I was still in school I almost wished I forced myself to write right handed as well, but as it turns out, writing is now obsolete.

Hell yeah! Im actually right handed and use the mouse in my left hand... When I got my first computer there was no room on the right side of the keyboard to put the mouse... so I put it on the left and have been using that way ever since

On a side note, its nice to actually see that other lefty gamers exist lmao =P

I am left handed and i play with mouse in the left hand with standard keyboard setup. (was around 3.4k master zerg in s1)

I dont plan to ever switch to lefthanded shortcuts cuz i played over 1.5k games on default setup and i dont want to waste time re-learning new way.
I also think that it is kind of advategeous to have right kind on keyboard due too thumb lying on ctrl.
However there are 2 disadvantages playing like that:

1.) You need to have your keyboard waaay to the right. I have a small table and i can only push my keyboard to a certain point (not enough) , resulting in a mostly unatural position of my hands (only when i play sc )

2.) When you keyboard is pushed to the right you cannot chat with other people so easily, so evreytime i play a fun or practice game, I need to explain to people that i cannot chat during the game . Not cuz i am anti-social but because of my keyboard position :D

Are you guys serious? Forcing yourselves to write right handed when you are a lefty? I'm lefthanded and write with my left hand just fine , and my writing looks better than allot of right handed ppl i know . And yes I write from left to right , and it feels very natural to me.

Ok, i finally decided from about 24 hours ago to ONLY use my left hand for my mouse. The first hour it felt really awkward and i had a few moments where i wanted to give up and change it back to how it was but i kept with it and now it is beginning to feel almost natural, for me anyways.

I'll try to give an update in a few weeks how it turned out for me.

Nice read, i'm a lefty as well - and there's some issue i'm sure every left-handed gamer came across - What mouse should i get?

I've had a hard time ever since, as the "ergonomic" well crafted gamer-mouses usally are just for right handed people.

So, here are three products which are (more or less) especially made for us:

Razer DeathAdder Left-Hand Edition

Logitech MX610 Left-Hand Edition (discontinued, check Ebay)

I actually use the Logitech, its a laser driven mouse - and the fact that it's wireless doesnt concern me much as i always have a pair of spare batteries

Anyhow, being ergonomically formed it feels so much better than a symmetrical one. Though, kinda hard to get.
