EDIT:

Let me expand on that.

What you 'shoutcasters' don't seem to realize is how disposable you are. Anyone with minimal knowledge of the game can start casting games for the community. You don't realize that what makes the scene interesting are the players; the players who actually put hours of effort and sweat to master a game as complex and difficult as starcraft. All YOU had to do was get a microphone.

Let's look at the higher quality casters for a minute. Day9, Artosis, DJWheat, Incontrol, Gretorp, Chill, Gisado, Psy, Tasteless. What they have in common is either extensive knowledge and skill with the game, or a lot of experience spanning the brood-war era/esports in general. Husky? Hd? Biscuit? Vincere? Not to harp on all of you, but unless you step it up you're going to fall to the wayside quicker than you can yell 'I don't know what's going on, this game is crazy.'

It's actually hard work to cast. Okay, maybe not "hard work" but it does take a lot of effort and dedication. All I do is 3 hours on Saturday and 1.5 hours on Sunday and it's required significantly rearranging my life. I refuse to do anything more because I can't sacrifice my personal time. I don't know how some of these streamers do it.

Sacrificing playing time, obviously

DJWheat casted when he didn't know a zealot from a zergling (exaggeration obviously) and people still liked him, hell, I liked him from the first time I heard him cast and he definitely didn't have a lot of game knowledge then. Why? He can cast games and make it entertaining without any deep analysis, I have the same opinion of TotalBiscuit.

I haven't actually heard anything from HD or Husky since beta and assuming that their casts are similar still I would imagine people still watch them mainly because they enjoy listening to them commentate Starcraft 2 games and not for deep, strategical analysis of the games.

It doesn't require nothing but a microphone and minimal effort to cast, I'm quite sure of that without ever having casted a game. For one they have to encode, upload and all that jazz which takes time on its' own, but they also have to be entertaining for the viewers throughout games or series that can last 40+ minutes.

I have never casted a game, but I am damn bloody sure that quality casting doesn't come from a cheap microphone and a recorded replay with some play by play mumbled by a random gold player.

You are not going to win yourselves any respect by acting like such a stuck up, elitist condescending fool.

There is a reason you are not my target demographic, I would personally not want to associate with the likes of you and eSports will not benefit from having people like you as it's flagbearers.

Which is why I suppose, it's a good job you aren't. I'm fairly sure you don't actually know anything about casting and if you think all it requires is 'a mic', I will send you a mic and we can critique your efforts.

When it all comes down to it, all that is required is for any of us to turn around and say, 'what did you do for eSports lately?'. Because your list of achievements thus far seems to consist of 'tried to take a misinformed dump on the guys who are in fact doing something for it'.

Edit : Why is this thread still open? To call it derailed would be an understatement.

Well, I'm largely going to ignore this as it misses what i'm trying to say.

Essentially, you shat on IdrA for trolling Husky. In typical ego-inflated fashion, you bit back. The problem with this is that IdrA is actually making the scene happen and it only exists because of people like him. You rely on people like him for your career to work, making your self-importance almost laughable.

To be fair, mis-interpreting on the internet happens all the time, but that's how it came off and why you are receiving flak.

EDIT: Okay, I'm coming off way too belligerent. The point above was the only one I wanted to make, I don't deny you have your own niche and am by no means saying you are a 'bad' caster.

I don't rely on him at all. I get the same amount of views from random plats/diamonds that I get from casting pros. Hell, My Bronze-league games get more views than my pro-casts, not to mention as I've said several times before, SC2 is by far my lowest grossing form of income. My reviews, first impressions, DC Universe stuff, daily WoW shows, League of Legends, all crush the numbers of not only my casts but most SC2 Youtube VoDs in general. I do SC2 because I love it, not because it makes good business sense, it doesn't, I'm actively losing potential revenue by spending time doing SC2 stuff rather than higher grossing series. Make no mistake, I do not need Idra or anyone like Idra, but I have the outmost respect for progamers in general. If you don't already know the reason why I defend Husky to the hilt then you should probably go and read about it. If after that you still wouldn't have done exactly the same thing in my shoes, then I have to question your humanity. My problem is not with progamers, my problem was with Idras attitude and I'd hardly be alone in that. My respect for him as a player and knowledgeable commentator and analyst is not diminished by my dislike for some of his attitudes, they have little to do with one another. The guy is an exceptional player and a credit to foreign gamers in general. He's also a bit of dick on the internet, plenty of us are.

^_^ I'm glad some sense has come from this debate... I swear its like a bunch of deaf mutes beating on each other in this thread. (not you TB) This thread should be locked and put to bed.

A certain vocal minority of this community sadly isn't mature enough to handle this debate. I think what we can learn from this thread is that opinions are not facts... Something we learn in grade school, but many still have yet to comprehend.

I only hope that the vocal minority can conduct this debate in a much more mature way in the future.

SC:BW has a higher skill ceiling than SC2? SC 64 is where it's at brah.

Day9 is overrated imo. He always has that up and down fake voice and try to over analyze when shoutcasting. There's a difference between analyzing and addressing a game.

Artosis and Chill have always been the best SC commentators since Broodwar. They sound like sincere and serious nerds with a quite monotonous yet soothing voice.

Day9 fans are like underground music fans, they think their idol is the best only because they're "not famous" as other mainstreamers like HD and husky.

Day9 travels all over the world to cast starcraft tournaments.
who is more famous now eh?

While day9 is for sure more famous than husky that's not what sc2 casting is about.

sc2 casting is being part of the sc2 community not just the youtube community.

sc2 casting is loving the game and not expecting your viewership to compensate for content.

sc2 casting is casting live events and meeting the progamers you are yelling into your mic for everyday.

sc2 casting is being able to keep up with the meta game and understanding players styles.

These qualities make a great caster not how many views you can grab on a volatile website like youtube.

So we'll hate him Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark gracken. - Pieman

maybe tasteless does not have the same in-depth knowledge as artosis but he is the funniest guy ever.
i love artosis, don't get me wrong but if he was the only one casting the games.. it would be so much more boring. i think tasteless is extremely funny to hear.. and even when sometimes he's goofy (forgets something, says something wrong) it's part of why i like it.

also, i don't think you can make such "clear" division between "higher quality" and "lower quality", there's a recent cast where incontrol says that infestors can't neural parasite air units, that's like.. a mistake that probably HD or Husky wouldn't even do.
does it mean that he has less knowledge than the game compared to them ?
probably not.. yet, it seems he is lacking zerg knowledge to some extent.
does this make him a bad caster ? i don't think so

people should stop talking trash about this and that guy and just enjoy whoever they like.
i find hilarious this kind of antagonism between fans of different casters.. after all, we all here for the same reason: the love for sc2.

one big thing that has been brought up tons of times but it seems that people don't realize yet is ... casters like HD and Husky are actually SUPER important for the esports scene in the west.. and if the true "dream" of lots of nerds is to reach a level like korea with broadcasted TV matches and all that shit, we need mainstream stuff like that.. because guess what, if you actually have ever been to korea the average korean watcher is a casual gamer that plays for fun and watches it for fun. it's not the kind of day9 daily audience.

recently in one of my classes in college someone was talking about starcraft i went over to hear what they were saying and so many kids in there were husky's fans, they just watched his cast and they didn't even play the game. one or two did randomly, but nothing serious.. but they all loved the casts.
that's the kind of "advertising" sc2 needs to grows as an esport.
we need everything and everyone. we need day9 daily and Husky.. so stop hating

Hey totalbicuit, i've only been able to find two of your 'this is why we can't have nice things' youtube videos. is that all there are/ are there any plans to make any more of them? i'm hoping so, really enjoyed those

hopefully this isn't too offtopic from the thread

Thread's already way fuckin' off-topic but it would be best to PM me with those kinds of questions since they are of limited interest to everyone else.

As much as I like every thread in the entirety of TL having to do with me turning into a popularity contest, can we please keep this thread about the music video?

There are dozens of other threads comparing day9, myself, and every other caster out there. Can we please just give it a rest in this one?

As much as I like every thread in the entirety of TL having to do with me turning into a popularity contest, can we please keep this thread about the music video?

There are dozens of other threads comparing day9, myself, and every other caster out there. Can we please just give it a rest in this one?

Loved the music video, hilarious stuff, reminded me of all the hilarious boy band videos in the mid 90's. Like a white boys 2 men. I know some people don't like the music videos, but I think they're entertaining. Keep it up. I also think your casting is awesome!

There are a lot of casters on youtube, but only a few of them make it to huge popularity. People like husky are just fun to listen to if your a noob or new to the game. He got me into SC2 and the E-sports scene. Then there are people like Totalhalibut which have an amazing voice and enjoy the games they are casting, and the express that therefore we enjoy them as well. I quit WoW and dont find it enjoyable but I still watch Totalhalibuts WoW videos and wowhobb's too. But in the professional e-sports scene they would not be qualified to cast the games because of their minimal knowledge of the game. I think the biggest problem is that they make money off getting views on the internet. Make a video talking about stuff, and if you have 100k+ subscribers you make free money. You just have to get a little lucky and get a bunch of subscribers and you can make a job off youtube. Progamers have to spend 6+ hours a day practicing build orders in a game to become good, and they have to win tournaments for money. The contracts they get don't make as much money as youtube partners do.(I think so, if I'm wrong correct me) Progamers have to put much more effort time and money into making a living then youtube partners.

On topic though, I liked the baneling song(but hated it because it was based on a justin beiber song), the SCV love song is better, but I dont like watching 3 almost naked men on a beach singing about love.(Nothing against gays)

I did not really like the video, Banelings was funny and catchy, this one just does not have the same magic.

Aww. What a pleasant delight this thread was. I just wanted to know why IdrA got banned and in the process I discovered some amusing drama. I got to say, It is amazing how how efficient Idra's trolling is. Such little effort on his posts, yet so much attention gained. Clever. Well done.

Oh, and since husky wanted the thread to be about the music video all I have to say is that it was dull. My standards have been raised with Banelings though.
