It's just people trying to seem tough, thats all. Any idiots that talk like that in real life would likely get laid out pretty damn quickly.
Also telling people to get cancer is pretty popular with the dutch I've heard. Dutch friends would say "kanker man" all the time, and apparently that meant I hope X or Y gets cancer.
Not positive on that though of course.

Unfortunately you're right. It's sickening and I'll never understand it, but some of the standard swear words over here are diseases, with the main one being cancer.
I don't even think it's an EU thing, just us select few. Yay, Netherlands.

'Kanker man" in dutch is similar to cursing a random word instead of cancer. As in "shit man, [drama]".
However, it is quite common in the Netherlands to curse using diseases/illnesses. Interesting phenomeon, as it does not occur at all (or barely) in other countries, even Dutch-speaking (such as Belgium).
