IM still holding down 3 of the top 5 spots, with MVP and Junwi retaining their #1 and #2 slots and Nestea dropping from 4 to 5. Among the foreigners, Sen has the top spot, making his debut on the list at #20. Select had a big week, moving up 100 spots to 52nd from last week's 152nd. Haypro was the sole other foreigner to rise (to 72 from 99), while the others all dropped: Idra to 105 from 84, Luffy to 122 from 76, Huk to 126 from 70, Jinro to 132 from 124, and moonglade to 176 from 122.

Some questions I had as I was writing this up: Should we count Select as a foreigner? After all, he is a Korean citizen. Also, does anyone know what account ret is laddering on?
|
I consider Select a foreigner because he's not going to be able to spend a large amount of time in Korea. His primary residence as of now is still Canada (I think, or somewhere in NA at least).
|
Hmmm.
inControl said in SotG that Protoss was really under-represented in the Korean Top 200.
Doesn't look like it here though, maybe things have already started shifting a little.
Edit: actually last week they were 70, this week 66. So I think inC just got it wrong
Still <3 you Geoff

He is living in the US. I don't know what I would consider SeleCT, obviously he is an amazing player judging by his past acheivments in other games.
Interesting top 200 this week imo.

Select is korean, he even said so himself in an interview from undeniable tornament.
Edit: also, since you said that he is a korean citizen, its unquestionable that he is korean, no buts. And you can't even assume that his got an american citizenship since korea doesn't allow dual citizenship.

i thought select traded in his korean citizenship so he didn't have to get drafted for the army. Forget where i heard this from tho.... regardless, gogo foreigners!

I believe in a recent interview SelecT mentioned he can only stay in Korea for maximum of six months, implying he's on a traveler's VISA.

Why is BoxeR #106. What made him dropped so hard during the last few weeks?
Select: depends on what he achieves. if he wins anything big in korea, counts him as korean, otherwise, he can just be a no name foreigner.

This week racial representation is about as even as we can get. Good stuff.

Sorry I don't have anything meaninful to add to this discussion but IMMvp is DOMINATING the ladder. I can't wait to see what he's got under his sleeve for the GSL 3.

Except in Korean Diamond league, Protoss takes up ~36% of the entire division while Zerg takes up ~24%. Terran close to Toss @ ~34%

Considering we're talking about representation within the top 200, and considering it was 70 - that's pretty damn close. I mean, I'm all for toss getting a little bump (even if said bump is just koreans sharing their strats), but lets not say something is statistically significant when it's really pretty clearly not.

Incontrol also stated in the latest SotG that he was using IdrA's battlenet account while he was in Korea. THat may be a reason for the drop as Incontrol was not entirely used to the style played on the Korean ladder and IdrA's MMR rating would face some stiff competition

Flash would have been #1 the day he starts playing.

The reason he could only stay for 6 months hasn't been clarified afaik from that interview. It could be that Select had to go back to school in America after 6 months, which would make sense, because we all know how serious korean parents (asian parents for that matter) are about academics. Holidays in school doesn't last 6 months, but one could opt for a delay to the start of their course.

That's strange, from what I hear Protoss is horribly underpowered and that it means nothing to win against them because I'm Zerg.

But in the starcraft sense, he is not exposed to the same training as players in Korea therefore he should be a foreigner.

Good players will be at the top, regardless of what race they chose. That doesn't mean the game is balanced. The representation at the top of the ladder is approximately the same (slightly less) at the moment as the overall % of players who chose protoss as their race.
However, this doesn't mean that this one statistic is representative of the state of the game - simply because it more closely represents the game as you see it. There are many statistics which show Protoss is struggling, and a few (like this one) which show they are on even footing - and I don't believe I've seen any relevant statistics which show them being ahead (aside from win %, which as many have said previously, isn't really relevant). What would you infer from this?

I don't mean to go off on a tangent, it's just I'm sick of so many people having this "Protoss sucks now, losing as them means nothing because they're underpowered" attitude because of GSL, when clearly professional level results mean nothing to them.

Nope.
I did very well on IdrA's account and even better on Artosis' account. IdrA's drop is because he is trying out other things but also because ALL korean P's/T's do 4 gate all ins and 2 rax proxy marine/scv play. It's really lame there atm for Z players.

Note: This is not enough to convince me or anyone of note that anyone is underpowered using this statistic alone, but I wanted to clarify that his statement is not accurate. Another of note - out of the top 64 of the 1500 who tried out for the GSL, how many toss are still alive?
Second note: beating protoss is still meaningful because 90% of games are not determined by slight power tweaks to individual units - they are determined by positioning, macro/micro and overall understanding of strategy. Anyone not competing in the GSL currently who's telling you that the reason they are losing has only to do with their race is only making excuses for poor play.

Yet here is a healthy amount of Protoss in the Korean Top 200.
Korean players must suck to let that many Protoss players through! Yes and the evidence against them is ~4-6% disadvantage and not winning in tournaments/doing well in GSL. I don't mean to go off a tangent, it's just I'm sick of so many people having this "Protoss sucks now, losing as them means nothing because they're underpowered" attitude because of GSL, when clearly professional level results mean nothing to them. Protoss players on Korean ladder just cheeses or all-ins all the time. Only about 10 left in GSL I think =S

Edit: also, since you said that he is a korean citizen, its unquestionable that he is korean, no buts. And you can't even assume that his got an american citizenship since korea doesn't allow dual citizenship. As a American of Korean descent I can tell you it most certainly is possible to have dual citizenship but you can't get Korean citizenship if you already are a citizen from a different country. Select came to the states from Korea so he already had Korean citizenship, and since its not hard to obtain American citizenship he most likely is a dual citizen.

Protoss had won only once this week on Gisado stream. It is one of the evidences why Koreans think protoss is up.

But in the starcraft sense, he is not exposed to the same training as players in Korea therefore he should be a foreigner. So by that logic, IdrA would be a Korean?!
There's no logically consistent taxonomy that classifies a Korean living in America and an American living in Korea both as foreigners.
People just do it because they want to.

Where is Artosis? Isn`t he supposed to be some sort of korean ladder pro since he knows supposedly what the top players do?
