ustream.tv/channel/zergman

TL.net Zergman Stream thread is here http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=170893

Free Lessons

For those of you that are interested I am going to be restarting up my stream. I'm feeling better, but I don't want to take on too much too quickly so I'm revamping how I will be doing my stream. As far as my stream I am going to be doing free 1 hour lessons throughout the week starting tonight at 10pm Eastern. They should continue at that same time every night, though I reserve the right to cancel a night or move the time. First come first serve so show up at my stream if your interested. Post any questions you have for me here or message me online Zergman code 880. My stream is at ustream.tv/channel/zergman

Adopt A Noob Web Site
Currently I'm in the process of having a web page made for me so the process will flow much better for my stream and will have an "adopt a noob" section with added searching functionality. It should be way better than the current system.

<3 Shadowrun community, The Adopt a Noob program kept it alive for a lot longer but it just could not sustain a large enough player pool.

Let's keep it on topic though, Adopt a Noob Programs have been adopted by several game communities on MLG after the succes shadowrun had with it, and it's just a generally badass idea.

I would love it if Idra adopted me! I went random, but zerg is still true at my heart. I went random so I know the counters better. Plus I like the pictures you get on the random and you can get all the other race pictures to. Random playing rocks!

Funny you should ask. The idea just came to me one day. I never watched an MLG before Dallas and I have no idea what Shadowrun is. Coincidently though I did a search for Adopt a Noob today on Google because I was curious if my thread would show up and I see all these references to Shadowrun so I was just thinking about this when I read your replay. As far as I know it was a completely original thought I had that coincidently has been done before, but I'm niave enough to think that I didn't see the title somewhere before and it creept into my subconscious.

No its not. I'm getting a server option put into our spreadsheet. It should be there in the next day or two.

Its already started. There are 493 people in it and there are another hundred or so we havn't updated in the spreadsheet from before we created the entry form. If you're a mentor you'll probably get messaged every so often as people see your name on the list.

it's not really a big deal, after some people did it for SR, which was supposed to be for generating attention to the game and helping the newbies overcome the skill gap so the community could get bigger, basically every game for MLG had an adopt a noob thread pop up trying it. this was like 2 years ago though or something so i doubt you'd have seen it if you only got into MLG this year. it's a good idea imo and as long as theres enough teachers i'm sure it'll help some people out, especially considering that some people are willing to pay for lessons.

I just signed up as a noob. I have 1200 games played and still am only top 3 bronze. It sucks. I had another name that was middle silver but I got reclassified into the bronze. I watch Sean every night and even have some of his protoss saved on my phone to watch at work while Im working and I still can't get out of bronze. I would love to evolve my game and get it where it needs to be. I have the skills just for some reason can't seem to put them to use.

If you read through the program I currently don't do the matching. I plan to have that feature implemented once the website is up, but for the meantime the best way is to message a bunch of people from the spreadsheet and find times they can get with you to practice.

Anyone can sign up for anything. I've noticed a lot of diamond players don't think they need help or don't think anyone will sign up that is capable of helping aka a higher level diamond player.

Signed up as a Protoss mentor. I did something very similar to this for L4D, created a group called "Community 4 Fame" which grew to some success. OP, if you're looking for any help; I'm sure I could be of some assistance.

Noob is anyone that wants to get better at their game, mentor is anyone that thinks they have something valuable to offer someone wanting to get better. There are Diamond Noobs, aka I would be a Noob when compared to a high level Diamond or Pro.

I don't see why a Gold or Platinum can't help a Bronze player improve. Usually the Bronze players I've been with just need help with basic play like scouting, mineral saturation, basic micro, macro etc. and Gold/Platinum players can help them learn some of those things.

Just because your skill level isn't Diamond doesn't mean your don't have that level of knowledge. I can watch Pros play and point out mistakes they made in their play and I don't have to be a Pro to notice it.

Yes the spreadsheet allows for multiple entries so simply enter your info as a noob for the races you want then enter as a mentor for the races you want the 2nd time.

Signed up a while ago, and hooked up with several mentors...and it has helped my game tremendously. Besides making some great new friends whom are really nice and enjoyable to hang out with online, the practice games helped me instantly.

I went from silver to gold on a 9 game win streak right after my first mentoring session - then immediately started playing platinum players, and continue to do so - but unfortunately haven't improved quite enough...have about a 40/60 win ratio vs. platinums, so probably not gonna get promoted for a while, but still playing them - so quite a difference from silver in such a short time...and all thanks to this program and the awesome guys that gave me their time and helped me out

Thanks for a great idea, and great implementation!!

Glad to hear its working for you. I've gotten a lot of people that have told me their mentoring sessions have been successful and helped out. I'm hoping Blizzard stickies my thread at some point because its been dieing ever since I implemented the automated spreadsheet cuz now people don't have to post in the thread to join.

Is there any way to sort the spreadsheet by region? Clicking on the top of the Region column didn't do anything for me and as a SEA player it's kinda tough to scroll through 1000 listings to find the handful of other SEA players

Go to the AANP Data tab, select View and click 'List View' from the drop down. This'll give you the ability to sort and search.

Essentials:

Salivanth.254
Silver league (high, but probably going to fall now)
Zerg, switching from Protoss (hence the imminent ratings tank)
Noob
SEA server

Basically, I'm looking for a mentor because, having played Protoss for over 150 games, I now want to switch to Zerg. I've watched a lot of pro games / Day9, and internalised the right mindset, but my macro is lacking, like any low league player, and there are plenty of things I don't know. I would like to learn Zerg since they fit my macro style a lot more than Toss (and Warpgates are annoying).

I also suck at ZvZ: have really no idea how to play it or what build(s) to use.
<@Wikt> so you are one of those nega-fans <@Wikt> that hates the company that makes a game and everything they stand for <@Wikt> but still plays the game <@Wikt> (like roughly 30% of blizzard's player base, maybe much more...)

Signed up as a Terran Mentor on SEA (2350 atm)

I off race as both Protoss and Zerg in Team Games though, so if you'd like some sort of help on general game-play/macro/decision making, I'm willing to help!

I've had i think 4 students from this, all in different leagues, bronze, silver, plat and diamond.

The main problem is that none of them were willing to actually spend any time to become better and went back to playing 2v2s and UMS as soon as i've shown them a few good build orders and had them obs games between high diamond players demonstrating the build orders.

Many noobs probably thought that having a mentor is going to be some magic pill to let them jump 2 leagues ahead, and were disappointed when they found out it actually took effort on their part.

I signed up on the spread sheet as mentor/practice partner, but figure i'll put my stuff here as well. I don't ladder due to time, but I regularly beat 1800-2000 diamonds I run into in customs so I'd say I'm somewhere around there. I have time for the next two weeks so I figure why not help people out. I think I'm better at teaching than I actually am at the game.

ID: Autumn
Character code: 448
Race: Zerg main, laddered as random all through beta though

this thing is great. I think when they implement chat channels, such activity would eventually evolve on its own. In my short time of noobish iccup playing I got a mentor in like 2 weeks was fun. all you needed were chat channels and I didn't even really push it.

common problem from people new to RTS. if I knew I had a couple people who were dedicated I would like to do it, but everyone drops out or loses interest eventually.

I find this a little hard to believe and odd, but understandable. I have a lot of friends who want to get better and can't because they won't put the effort in, but they never go out of their way like reading through teamliquid and signing up for things like this so I just think that's odd that someone would do all this then not put the time/effort in.

Where is the choice for both?

I'm a low diamond and would want to sign up as both. I wouldn't mind helping "noobs" with things I had trouble with, while at the same time I would love to get help from those way above me etc.

You just submit two seperate entries..do one for noob and then submit a 2nd for mentor.

Also for those that are interested once we get chat channels I'm going to try to set one up where everyone in the program can meet. For now people have been meeting in my stream ustream.tv/channel/zegman then either watching or finding a mentor/noob and leaving from there to go practice.

To you and the post above you. Per the OP you need to go out and find noobs/mentors by adding people from the list to your friends list and messaging them when they are online. With almost 1000 people there is no way for me to match everyone up. It is up to you guys to do the leg work. The list is simply a way for you to find who is interested in getting help and who is willing to help. Hope this helps the two of you find what your looking for. If you happen to be a noob you can always come by the stream I'd be more than happy to help you two.

I just saw this, and I love the idea. I know the ICCUP Training Program channel for BW was a huge success, so hopefully this will really take off when chat channels are up.

Regardless, I signed myself up as a mentor, practice partner, and noob. I play somewhere around the 2.5k diamond mark (although I only have like 1600 pts currently), but I still have a lot to work on.

I'm usually up for helping others improve as well, and I've helped several plat or lower players improve.

You go to the list and you look for Terrans that have mentor as their status. You then message them with their character code listed

OK so I have had the game for about a week and still haven't found anyone to really help me in-game. I was wondering if you could take the time to see how I play, one match is practice league and the other is a Co-op I have only been playing as Terran but have not selected a specific race. Still looking for people to play with in game that can help me improve =/. Please.

I don't want to be on those random spreedsheat thing... so if anybody need help till diamond level I will try to do my best to help any toss player.

I'm currently 2,4k diamond Toss player (but this could vary even in 200 points +/- as I'm testing more stuff).

This is fun. helped out 2 noobs today although 1 was platinum and he wasn't that bad, just needs some work on build orders and he'll be fine. the other guy... well I think he might be the worst player I've ever seen, but I think he got a lot of information... I hope anyway...

Thanks for this response. I'm 2k Diamond player but just figured out how to properly macro for Zerg [Don't ask...].

I'll probably sign up as well!

Some gentleman named Sturm just asked me for help, and I agreed.
When we both had time we played a practice game to start off. After I get a lead, he just says "wow", leaves the game and ignores me. I wouldn't recommend helping this guy if this is the kind of attitude he has. I was nothing but civil to him.

As of right now I am training 3 guys. One had a huuuge and fast progress and insta jumped from bronze to gold after only a few sessions.

This is quite fun actually. I have my students play each other and after we discuss the game and I hand out some advice etc=)

I'm a silver lvl player looking to improve my gameplay. I need help with basic build orders and such. My 4gate for PVP is about 45seconds late. (7stalkers at 6:30) Saw that 5zealot+7/8stalckers is possible at 6:30. I'd like to learn a nice PvZ build with phoenix harassment. PvT I do a 4gate and it always works. I also have been experiementing with a 2gate robo expand. And a pretty fail 1gate FE. (These are both against either P or Z.) Well that's about it.

My Name/Code - Chasedown - 738
Email - Chas3down@hotmail.com - email me or add me on msn, that's my skype as well. I am on skype everyday if you would like to contact me on there.

I can play mostly weekends, this weekend only nights 8pm to w/e because I have finals coming up. I'd like to use skype and we could just do some 1v1's with replay or against AI with spectating, what ever you think would be best. Feel free to PM if you are interested. I'd like to get mentored for a while, on a weekly basis or something, and we can work on different things and improve in different parts of my game play.

I am looking for a mentor who is willing to be with me for a while, looking to enter some low-level tourny's online, move through leagues, and kind of be there for awhile. Or i'm fine with someone who just wants to spend one session together, i'm open to either.

Not a noob per se: 1k diamond Zerg with 1300 bonus points left. MMR seems to be ~2k diamond, although have lost to plat players and beat a masters 2k yesterday. I'm back after several months of no 1v1 and doing about 10 games a day and while I can tell I've improved nearly every time I sit down to play there are still huge holes in my game, mainly against protoss. I've seen enough IdrA to have a handle on a few decent ways to handle Terrans, but I really hit a wall in mid-game against Toss. I tend to get a macro lead, win the first couple of clashes and think that I'm doing pretty well. After that, I get stuck on roach/hydra with corruptor with nowhere to go. The jump to ultras/broods from there is pretty big in tech, and its also that point where the strength of the toss ball starts to catch up to my macro and stomps me; I can usually hold on until HT come out but its basically over after that. Anyway, if there are any wise zergs or toss out there who want to help me own more, I'm game!

...fail. um yeah if your a low level platinum player can you still get into the newbie list? Have 178 1v1 played but I still could use some help with macro and strategies. I think I hit a wall by myself and outside input would be insanely helpful.

You can definitely sign up as a newbie if you're platinum.

Nice initiative, I wanted to fill out the form, but there's no option for master league yet.

edit: so for the time being, if you'd like help from a 2.6k master Zerg, feel free to message troete.630. europe obviously.

How is a list of basic skill categories useful to a newbie who doesn't know what is required to be good in these individual areas?

You might know that regularly missing workers for more than 1-2 seconds is bad, but a newbie might think that if he is always 1-3 seconds late it's okay and only 5-10 seconds is bad. Same applies to every aspect of play unless you quantify everything.

I am a noob looking for a mentor to help me reach my personal goal of master league.
I got plenty of time on my hands to practice, but only around 160 games played so i got allot to learn and I feel its easier to learn with someone teaching me.

As this is my goal I prefer a mentor from the master league or high diamond.

I'm just a noob looking for a guiding light. I have a bonus pool in 1v1 around the 2000 range, so it's clear that a lot of my issues lie simply in not playing as many games as I should. Truth be told I'm a little intimidated by 1v1s and spend most of my time in team games. I've got, what I think to be, a pretty comprehensive idea of game mechanics, I'm just one of those people who spends more time talking about and watching SC2 than playing it I guess. If a mentor is available to push my skill level to the next plateau mechanically I would be endlessly grateful :D

Thanks!

and also, is there a "adopt a noob program" chat channel on the Eu server aswell? because i cant seem to find it

Hi, just signed up as a noob. I mostly play terran but some Zerg and Protoss too that I handle ok in 4v4. In 1v1 I stay with terran and have 21W/23L far and although I autoimproved some, I feel weak when playing low silver or high bronze. My economy is ok but I don't spend enough sometimes, micro needs big improvement, strategy and scouting are weakpoints too, and I'm sure a lot more is wrong

Hey, I picked up starcraft 2 at launch and I've been playing it casually since then but I would like to really put some effort in to getting better. I reached the gold league back in october/november but then had a break over christmas and havent managed to progress any higher since returning. I currently seem to really struggle with PvT and PvP and would love for anyone to give me some help. I signed up on your form and tried the channel but there is no one in there on the EU servers

Actually, we have a online system could be used to set up to do that efficiently.
It is not designed to do free coaching, but i guess it will work.

Basically the idea is to have an expert offer lessons, once the expert sign up, he or she will have a very short link which could be used to all the clients to book sessions. (e.g: http://ex.gs/4mVG5B) Anyone could book a session and the expert need to approve it. After that they could exchange information about the service. In our case, it will be the id in SC2.

The service is not necessarily free, you could set price for your service, but I suppose many of the players here would be happy to offer free service. If you would like to try, just go to http://expert.io

Hopefully, this would make the free coaching easier.

:-)

I would really appreciate it if a high ranked zerg or something would help me improve my game. My macro feels in place, but I need work on my timings, cheese/all-in response, and micro.

Signed up as a noob. Haven't played in six months, I'm super rusty and don't know enough about current game strategy I'm willing to give back and mentor once I'm back up to speed.

Hey Zergman, I just wanted to thank you again for taking your own time to coach me last night! It was super helpful and really got me pointed in the right direction. I'll be hanging around your stream if I remember to check it on time

I AM willing to help any new player. I can teach any race, and just want to help because i think helping other people actually improves how i think about the game as well. I can get your mechanics up to at least a platinum level (not very high i know) and give you suggestion on hotkeys (based on what pro players for that race use and what I use), etc. Getting to diamond is mainly about mechanics and macro anyway so I think this could be very beneficial.

You SHOULD have a skype.
I would be interested in playing with you on the weekends for the most part.

Hey, first post here, I actually made an account just to post on this thread because I love this Idea so much However I have a couple questions regarding this that were not made abundantly clear to me...

First off, OP mentioned free lessons. Now, are all the mentors in this Adopt-A-Noob program doing the lessons for free, or are those only Zergman's lessons?

Also, OP says the best way to find peeps is to meet them in-game in the Adopt a Noob program channel. However, I have been unable to figure out exactly how to find this channel... Could someone please explain how one would go about joining this channel, from the main menu screen in SC2?? That would be super helpful.
Hoping to find a great mentor through this. I've already signed up as Shalinar.540 on the spreadsheet, i was high bronze in season 1 but I feel like i could be silver now, I've been drilling a lot lately in custom games (haven't done my 1 placement match thing to figure out where I am in season 2 yet). Regardless of my ladder position, I am a low level player with a decent grasp on the game and a good understanding of the mechanics (as in, Im not a total noob, I just haven't had a lot of time to devote to laddering). I am extremely open to learning new things and am very dedicated to trying what I'm told. I want to get better and am willing to do what it takes If there's someone willing to mentor me on the ways of the zerg swarm, I'd be totally willing to be mentored.

I believe I'm already on the list, but just wanted to say I'm here for any low level Terrans, or if anyone around the high level Master League would like to do some practice games with me!

All lessons in this program are free regardless of the mentor. I suppose someone out there might try to charge, but that wasn't the purpose of the program.

As far as joining the channel at the bottom right corner of your screen is your friends list, next to this is an icon you can click on and it will bring up the chat channels option. You just type in the name The Adopt A Noob Program and click to joing channel. If you did it right there should be 5-20 guys depending on the time of day.

I'm starting to get tired of waiting on people to build me a site so I may just hire some company to do it cuz I think that would be a lot easier for everyone.

Nice program, but I think you may have taken one too many liberties with the underline feature.

Edit: Woops didn't realize it was a necro...

I've been looking for a Protoss mentor/coach for a while, been sitting in the channel past couple days although nobody has responded to me in the channel. I dont expect much from anyone, I'd just like someone to coach or mentor me for a couple hours here and there so I pick up protoss alot faster. If anyone is interested, please pm me or contact me in any way.
