Navi is an American Zerg player who is "just shy of 2k points on the ladder" and who practices regularly with the /r/starcraft community. She recently took 1st place in the first ever ESL US SC2 Female Cup (which will be every Monday now!).
I don't think this interview has been posted yet, and it struck me as very thoughtful and informative. It's here on gosutrolling.com.
She goes into her history with StarCraft, her practice schedule, best and worst parts of her play, and a detailed analysis of her amazing series vs. VT.Awesome during the cup.
My favorite part is the analysis of what was going through her head in the games vs. Awesome (semifinals) and AuRora (finals):
[ZvT vs. Awesome]
"Navi: Game 1 – Xel’naga was the first map. Awesome and I have played many times before. She has been accepted on VTgaming and she frequently plays on the Reddit Open and KotH events. From what I know about her style, she loves banshees. I don’t think I’ve played a game against her where she didn’t use them. She also never lets a Zerg 14 or 15 hatch ever. So every game I made sure to pool first to hold off any early marine or bunker play. This game however, I didn’t keep my lings near my base. So unfortunately she got a lot of overlord and drone kills with just a few marines. It threw me off big time. While re-droning, I knew she was getting that natural expansion up and after confirming with a Zergling, I thought I’d play a cute Baneling trick on her through those bushes on the bottom right of the natural. It did wonderfully, and I held off the Banshee harass, but I was very unprepared for her push and I forgot I had placed my Spire down. So instead of making Muta, I made too many Banelings. In a panic I threw everything I had at her and by that point it was GG. Very rough start.
Game 2 – Metalopolis was my choice because I felt like I had a better chance at defending a more open location. Again I went pool first to be safe, and I noticed that Awesome’s SCV entered my base, saw my pool, and left quickly. No harass, and not even sticking around to see if I fast expand. I thought it was quite peculiar so I decided to make quite a few Zerglings before planting my Hatchery. It ended up paying off because apparently Awesome Maka-raxed and sent half of her SCVs with a few marines. I caught her marines out of position with my lings and cleaned up the workers after. It was a lot easier than I expected mostly just because I knew I could handle it. After defending the rush, I decided I wasn’t just going to take the advantage. I threw down a baneling nest and planned on busting down her front while she was remaking SCVs. It ended up being great timing because she still only had a few marines defending. Everything melted and I stood victorious.
Game 3 – I felt a bit better after game 2, and knew that Awesome would be picking her most comfortable map: Lost Temple. Again, I went pool first to be safe and funny enough I didn’t notice her trying to wall off my ramp until the Zerglings popped out. Luckily none of the bunkers were finished yet so I threw all of my drones, lings, and Queen at them to stop the contain. It worked and I sent her back home and my Drones back to mining. After a while I got a bit uneasy. My spire was up but I felt a timing push coming. Then my lings on the towers saw her huge army of marines and tanks make its way down to my base. I didn’t expect something like that, even though she did the same thing in game 1. I made a few banelings and as many Muta as my gas and supply would allow. Right as she got there, she turned back around. I was confused for a second but later found out it’s because she totally forgot to research Siege Mode for her Tanks. I took advantage of the situation and decided to harass with Muta while switching to Roach/Infestor, double expanding, and planting another Hatchery in my main. I had an excess of minerals because I wasn’t mining from my 4th gas. It ended up working out until Awesome made yet another push with Thors and wrecked my expansions.
Back on 2 base I was cornered and calm. I had enough money to macro out a bunch of Roaches and I believe Roach speed and +1 range attack were done upgrading. When she came in for the assault, I thrashed out with all of my Muta, Banelings, Roaches, and Zerglings. Even a couple Queens got into the fight. I was happy that my Banelings roasted her marines and relieved that my Roaches ended up saving me against the Thors. Coupled with her bad rally point and my momentum with the Roaches, I burst out to destroy her third base (which wasn’t mining at full capacity because she didn’t destroy the rocks). With that gone, I carried the momentum to destroy her natural as well. On the side I made a horde of Banelings just for the marines and SCVs that might be thrown out as a last resort. Sure enough, they came out to defend and I brought them raining green, vengeful might upon Awesome. She lifted her buildings which gave me a laugh so I decided to burrow and unburrow my Roaches over and over as a Celebratory dance. Burrowing never felt so good."
[ZvZ vs. AuRora]
"Navi: ZvZ is both my strongest and weakest matchup. It’s hard to tell what kind of economy your opponent has and how much they can produce at any given moment. I was going to go with Roaches through the whole series but discovered that she liked to get Muta quite quickly. After losing the first game, I made sure to get Muta out before her every time. I had better Ling/Baneling control and ended up finishing the last game with a Fungal Growth on her Mutalisks (which felt very satisfying). They were all very intense games for me just as much as the Awesome games were. Aurora is quite a challenging opponent and it’s no surprise to me that she made it into the Finals."

She thinks the handsomest progamer is Jaedong. Personally, Jaedong is my favorite progamer, but I'd pick Bisu or Reach for handsomest.

I've got to play Navi a couple times... we used to play with the Reddit guys (/girls) just after release. Goodtimes.
She is really good and beat me a couple times :D Very mannered and polite player! It was a pleasure.
Much respect and congratulations... I never even thought about her when I heard of this tourney, very glad that she won

Extremely awesome interview. I'm really happy she won.
I'm even more happy that Awesome was picked up by VT Gaming - a great acquisition by them.

Why did they ask her what progamer she thinks is handsomest? Do we ask our male tennis players what female tennis player they think is hottest? I don't mean to be obnoxious, but she played well - why do we have to ask shit like that? how does that further the cause of female gaming? while questions like that are being asked I don't have much hope for anyone taking female progaming seriously at all.
Otherwise a good read, +1 to op

As someone who's had the pleasure of both playing with (although I'm definitely worse) and watching Navi play, it's really not surprising she won. I rarely see a zerg make innovative game decisions and actually win but Navi knows how, and it's exciting to see.
Great job Navi, and I look forward to [hopefully] playing again. Your talent and personality are great.
P.S. That site Gosutrolling has a damn nice visual style.

I totaly agree with this man. Im kinda happy there arent any pics of her in this Interview actually because otherwise 90% of the comments would be about titts.

Thanks, but dude, chill out. We don't ask male tennis players which female tennis player is hottest, but then again we don't ask female tennis players about the attractiveness of male tennis players. This is because tennis is super high profile and serious. This is like saying Korean players shouldn't do ceremonies because dancing or pulling silly stunts takes away from the quality of their play. It just adds personality to a player who is obviously very qualified skill-wise.

Congrats to her on the win! I really enjoyed reading her writeups. Hope to see more of her in the future :D

This is for me "AMAZING" since girls/chicks never get this high up in the skill-level because they never tries to. Im just amazed actually, and hopefully she will continue and get really really good. practice practice practice ~

The reason we don't ask male tennis players about the hotness of female tennis players isn't because it takes away from the quality of their play, its because female tennis players are as good or better then male tennis players, and we think of them that way. It just doesn't occur to interviewers to ask them things like that because its not so weird for girls to play tennis.
now, gaming on the other hand... its a male dominated sport, and so a good girl at it considered 'sexy' or 'tomboyish' for her interest in it. the problem isn't the interviewers being sexist, its the attitude of the community. as more girls play this sort of thing will pop up less.
i'm not critiquing you or anything man, it was a good interview, i just thought that we were past this.

People ask guys who the sexiest korean progamer is all the time, of course they all say Mantoss, unless they don't know anything.
Congrats again to Navi We need to play together more so I can teach you the secrets of ZvZ ;D Hahaha. You're fun to play against Navi. You're the only person on my friends list i've ever played on Ladder, and i've played you twice

whats the point of a female only tournament thats kind of degrading to the females imo. almost like when racism was prevelant with black only restroom and sport teams etc.

Well the OP did state that she is nearly 2k diamond which is pretty damn good. And on ladder I doubt she is playing vs many other girls.

Why do they make female cups? i don't get why they can not just play in the normal cups, in sports i get it because alot of the anatomy is different, but in computer games? come on :S

Alright, nice interview, thanks OP. Always good to see more female gamers. All in all she seems quite knowledgeable about the game. it's interesting to note that she is understands very well Zerg macro gameplay.
That question made me smile: + Show Spoiler +evoli: Who’s the most handsome progamer? ^.^
Navi: Jaedong.

there is many 2k diamond players but I've never seen navi win any regular tournaments. you do understand the bonus point pool system and what not ? how long has the game been out now players who skill reflected by points is far ahead of 2k.

Good interview.
Nice to see that she is taking this at least somewhat seriously and has a drive to do better.
Plus the fact she said Jaedong was the most handsome progamer (which is true btw) means she is a smart gal.

To be honest I think jaedong is far from being the hottest progamer that's why I find her answer surprising.
But anyways, why so negative? you might want to talk about the OP and the interview instead of directly jumping on the comments like a predator.

Can we have one thread regarding female competition without people repetitively questioning the point of having female competitions?
Seriously, there's no need to keep reiterating that issue. Any sort of competition at any level has a point if people are willing to organize it and others are willing to play in it.

You make a good point but the reason these things annoy me is they seem to discourage good female players from participating in the other competitions. I'd rather see girls tearing it up in GSL/MLG/etc with everyone else, but if they're spending their time practicing for these female only cups they wouldn't have time to right? I like how in fighting games, if they have a female only tournament at an event they typically REQUIRE the person to enter in the main tourney as well.. This is nothing against female gamers, in fact I support them 100%, just wish they'd step up to the main stage more :\

Pretty cool to see the girls stepping up the SC2 scene. But I really think people should drop this gender discussion, since the skill has nothing to do with gender anyway....
On a side note, Protoss cant even win a female cup.

I'm not comparing their skill. I'm just stating how an "atypical gamer stereotype" were to achieve some feat such as 2k points. It's impressive. I was part of being competitive at GH/RB (yea, go ahead and laugh) for a long time. Girl gamers that could FC lots of more difficult songs was impressive and not very common. There was also an 8 year old named Ben who could FC TONS of songs, he's incredibly talented at those games. And it's just impressive to see someone who isn't your typical gamer stereotype perform well. If a 3 year old and a turtle could both run a 6 minute mile, I'd say those are both incredible achievements. I'm not suddenly saying "look, the 3 year old is just like the turtle lololol".

I'd like to see that as well, but I don't see why these tournaments would discourage any girl who thinks she's good enough to step into higher level tournaments. At the end of the day, there's the fact that you can win 80k bucks in the GSL, and you can win maybe a few hundred (if any, I've no idea what the prize was) in the "female cup". Any competitive person regardless of gender will try out for the big prize if they feel they've got a chance of getting it because money has the same value for everybody.
Navi is apparently less than 2k rated diamond, so her not trying out for MLG/GSL probably has more to do with her skill level at this point in time than her gender. I'm a mid-diamond rated player myself, and let's say I could afford to fly to Korea or US, but why would I? I've got no chance of qualifying or going past first round at my skill level. The only difference between us is that I can't take part in female tournaments. =P
I guess they mostly practice and improve on ladder, so it's just a general sort of practice rather than "practicing for female cups" specifically. They play against 2k(ish) diamond players most of which are male anyway. Without training partners or teams, their training regime would probably be the same even if they were preparing for GSL qualifiers.

I really don't get why anytime a female gamer is mentioned people start coming out of the woodwork to make dumb sexist comments specifically because the gamer is female.
I, for one, think it's awesome. The one big "complaint" I've had with gaming being my favorite hobby is I've never really been able to share it with a member of the opposite sex.
I'm glad she did well, so congratulations to her on her win.

Navi: ZvZ is both my strongest and weakest matchup.
How does that even work... but no matter the gender a 2k point player deserves my respect since im way beneath em edit: even in the low level tournaments, zerg wins it all again jus' sayin

Have you played ZvZ recently? scary stuff. The first minute or two of a ZvZ is heart attack inducing, until you scout all that runs through your head is... I wonder if I'm being 6 pooled.. and don't even mention the banelings omg ><
All the people giving 2k diamond a hard time... shit from I sit on the ladder that's like a mountain climb away, even if I was to win every game from now until my huge bonus pool had disappeared I'd still be below that I think.
Pikachu V Navi Showmatch anyone?

I have really strong late game ZvZ, but early ZvZ is always a toss-up. I favor banelings over roaches but have been playing with more roach openings to see if I can create a standardized build.

I caught the stream once or twice, very good Zerg stream actually. No speedy crappy music, nice chat, cool and no rage stories etc...I was impressed cause Navi don't use a lot of hotkey if i remember correctly.
Anyway, cool to see you having success. Hope you'll manage to get some time to practice enough and crush any ( male or female ) player out there !

She wasn't offended, so don't try and be an e-knight by being offended for her. In fact, I'm almost certain that male interviewees have been asked which pro-gamer they thought was the best looking, as a joke, which is the same case here. Why weren't you getting indignant when that happened?
Fact of the matter is that guys and girls are different, and questions like that remind us it's about having FUN. Go read interviews with male pro-gamers and see if people don't ask silly questions. I don't know where people like you got it in your heads that male pro-gamers enjoy stoic, boring interviews and we throw that out the window because girl gamers aren't taken seriously. Across the board interviews usually have a playful vibe, because then they're actually interesting to read.
Main point: If females aren't offended, then stop making a mountain out of an anthill. I have YET to read a single offended female in any of these threads involving "the disrespect of pro female gamers." It's 100% guys who are probably stuck in the friend zone with every single girl they know.

You guys are stupid if you think that's what he's trying to say.
He's saying that girls don't play SC2 usually, and if they do it's very casually. So the fact that a girl is so high in the ladder is impressive.
Not many 6 year olds play starcraft 2, and if they do it's very casually. So the fact that a 6 year old being at 2k points would also be impressive.
He's not saying "Girls are retarded so they can't play sc2 as good as a 6 year old could."

It's a very nice interview. Adding female presence into the tourney and interview community seems to be something that most of the posters in this thread fail to appreciate.
God kiddies, stop focusing on small issues here.
Comments like "I was confused for a second but later found out it’s because she totally forgot to research Siege Mode for her Tanks," display a feminism rarely seen in posts on these forums.

We need more female only tournaments to encourage women to play without being worried about the big names cutting them down. Confidence is a large part in why these girl gamers don't compete in these big tournaments. And there's a lot more pressure for women to perform well in tournaments, because to perform poorly, they are feeding the stereotype that women aren't as good, or devoted to their play. If we have more girl only tournaments, it will get the 'first tournament jitters' out of the way so they can start building confidence. As well as turning the tournament winners into symbols for girls to use as role models. Much like the Foxer/Boxer scenario where Foxer's play and skill are akin to Boxer's classic 8-minute-and-win-it rush style from his champion days in sc:bw. Women are already seen as inferior to men in the eyes of eSports because no woman has proven herself like men already have. It's a prejudice that might start to fade as soon as women start winning tournaments and eventually play together, with men, in the same tournaments. If Day[9], Artosis and all the other ambassadors of eSports want to really get this game in the eyes of the public, then why wouldn't they want to pull in the other half of the population. There hasn't been a campaign specifically targeted towards pulling women into SC2. The campaigns currently have been too gender neutral and when you're not targeting anyone specifically, you're only going to keep bringing your past customers/fans in.
I hope this rant doesn't fall on deaf ears, but there's already too many topics open about this, so making a new topic about it will just clutter the site. I'll do some brainstorming and figure something out that's unique and productive, because the more I think about it, the more I want to do something about the sexual imbalance of power in SC2.

Um I didn't warn them but I'm pretty sure everyone is getting warned if they are complaining about the fact that this was a female only league or just being rude in general. If anyone wants to discuss that, or this point I'm making right now, it needs to be discussed in a separate thread... NOT the interview thread for the winner of the event.

I would be rude, except for the fact that girls get their own personal tournament in sc2. It's pretty much saying that girls can't compete with the boys, and they need their own tournament to play competitively. Whoever made this tournament is insulting women more then this guy ever could.

No. Just typical of Terran play at less than pro levels, and my opinion of that comes directly from that retelling THEY told.

I understand what some of you are saying but really, it's like TLO said on facebook a while back;

Anyway, it's not like they can't attend other tournaments if they wish to.

Not to derail the topic even more but please just think for a second before you make such a comparison, those sports all rely on your physique and therefore it makes sense to separate them. Maybe you're of the opinion that females are somehow inherently worse at gaming as well, but as far as i know there's nothing to support that. My personal opinion is that it's simply because there's just not enough female gamers, and even amongst the few that play there's certainly not many who devote themselves to the game as much as the current top players do.
Anyways, the interview was great and i enjoyed reading it. But i bet she said jaedong was the handsomest because of zerg bias, Nada doesn't have an entire thread about his body for nothing.

Don't know why you were warned for this post. It's true. If 'gamer girls' don't want to be segregated and poked at why do we go out of our way to make a seperate female cup. As if the two genders are any different when playing starcraft. Okay, let's make a male cup. It's quite a dumb idea and not at all an accomplishment.

There's another reason to create a female tournament rather than to create an environment of equal ability (ballpark of it) - it's just darn fun to see females playing all in one place. Heck, I'm a female and I enjoy seeing other women play, and if it's against one another it's even cooler. You guys need to chill with all this political correctness and learn to have fun.
|
I was glad to hear about this. Gaming has typically been a boy's club (although it's getting much better, at least in the states). Games in general still have a hard time being taken seriously, and I think girl gamers have a harder time being taken seriously.
While female gamers can join tournies like MLG/GSL they're dominated by men. So how do we get women into the GSL? Holding a female league has a lot of benefits such as giving opportunities for women gamers to shine in an area all their own.
We men have basically grown up gaming together. Girl gaming is something that should be fostered if we want SC2 to become mainstream.
I don't understand all the "Why don't boys get their special leagues, too?" talk. Many, many SC2 tournaments out there are male-only by default because all the competitors are male.
Don't look at this as female gamers vs. male gamers. Look at this as a way to foster gaming in communities where gaming hasn't been as acceptable for people.

SC2 is an even playing field and it's silly to have any special leagues. There's no physical or intellectual reason to have separate tournaments. IMO female tournaments further spreads the negative stereotype that women are less capable. If women want to be pro gamers then they need to put all the effort into it that men do (8 hours or more per day) to get to the same level.
Take a look at some of the ladies that were on WCG:UG including the winner Kat or Torch's girlfriend Rachel, they don't need any special treatment to win big tournaments.

The point is not to give everyone a "fair chance at the spotlight", the point of sports is to inspire and entertain, and that is why a female cup makes sense but a black people cup does not.

If theres an interview with a player, do not derail about gender issues or whether its "unfair" to have female only tournaments. If you continue to go off topic and force arguments about this, you will be warned or banned. Discuss the OP and the interview.
If there's a thread about a female gamer, and you post something like "pics plz" or something equally useless, you will be warned or banned. We want to make our community a welcoming place to everyone. Pages of picture requests and harassment is not acceptable.
Lastly, there is really nothing wrong with a tournament that is female-only. Every game or sport has classifications, whether its "only people in Poland" or "only Gold players" or "people registered on TL." These tournaments serve an important purpose, to encourage participation in groups of players that normally would not have such a tournament experience. It is only bringing more people to the game and delivering a better experience for everyone.
There is nothing wrong with such a tournament. Please stop arguing about it. Most of all, stop bringing such an argument into threads like this.

I don't mean to be obnoxious, but she played well - why do we have to ask shit like that? how does that further the cause of female gaming? while questions like that are being asked I don't have much hope for anyone taking female progaming seriously at all. Otherwise a good read, +1 to op
LoL every starcraft player has their favourite and most handsome progamers, it would be suspicious if that wasn't one of the questions.
I dunno why though cos Reach is clearly the most sexxx
I really like they thought process in game 2 against Awesome... can you get these reps somewhere?

You should meet my cousin. He's planning on competing in Halo: Reach for next season's MLG.

is there a reason why there are no pics?
I'm confused

Female cup for E-sports? We all know men are physically stronger and better at sports but are we also smarter and faster/better at thinking? From what I know this is called SEXIST. Who cares if girls play games, that fact that a player is GOOD should be why you like them or root for them not because of anything else but pure skill.

I'm sad I missed this event. Really cool interview. Wish Navi would stream more, because that's how I became a fan. =)

This makes no sense to me. How is it harassment to ask for pictures? Would this be different if it were a guy? People have the same curiosity to see the face and body behind a player in both cases. It gives something extra to admire. I see it as a compliment to the person, not an insult or harassment. Anyways... *shrugs* not sure if a discussion of this is welcome or not, since it is off topic, but yet it seems nonsensical to start a discussion only about that, so I won't make more posts about this.

Sad to see so many users here still not comprehending how this forum works. Anyway, it's always great to hear a female gamer's point of view and i hope the scene has healthy development in 2011 through tournaments like these.

Nice interview. Good to see more female players joining the scene.

Thanks for the kind words everybody (and lol @ the cute female cup "debate" going on). I still stream too, catch me in the early mornings or late evenings PST. Been working full-time and doing a little WoW with family + friends so things with SC2 have been slow. If you need any tips or pointers for Zerg or against Zerg, my team and I can help you out. Happy holidays

Should start banning derailers now that the warning has been unleashed imo
Congrats to the winner! But jaedong is clearly not the most handsome, Nada's body reigns supreme

I just wanted to say that this post has gotten nowhere near the level of respect it deserves. Well played.
Congratulations to Navi, and I hope you keep on going! I'd love to see players like you get good enough to start taking TL Opens and stuff like that. Always great to see a wider audience for Starcraft.
|
Finally the truth comes out, for too long TL has lived in dark shameful ignorance. Reach so manly this and Bisu so handsome that, bah humbug. Jaedong is the handsomest progamer of seasons past present and future and you know it.... Great interview btw, it's really refreshing to hear someone talk in such depth about their games, that's what I always feel is lacking from most. I really like hearing the play by play from the player herself (neat)

I'd guess the reason it's a female only cup is because of the fact that "girl gamers" are less common than guy gamers. They made this cup to bring out and encourage females to participate in Starcraft. If they want to bring more females into the world of Starcraft I'm not complaining.

This made my day. Thank you.
One day, I'd like to read a TL thread that mentions a female somewhere without the thread being cluttered with dumb. One day =(

Im just amazed actually, and hopefully she will continue and get really really good. practice practice practice ~ how can you determine her skill if she is playing females only, not many females play games seriously let alone games like sc2. Well the OP did state that she is nearly 2k diamond which is pretty damn good. And on ladder I doubt she is playing vs many other girls. there is many 2k diamond players but I've never seen navi win any regular tournaments. you do understand the bonus point pool system and what not ? how long has the game been out now players who skill reflected by points is far ahead of 2k. To be fair, a girl with 2k points is pretty damn impressive.
seriously give the girl a break just because shes not knockin bitches out in the gsl doesnt mean shes not good. 2k isnt that impressive but ive never seen a girl get past silver so that noted 2k is very very impressive!

congratulations! can't wait to see more cups like this, it will really help the community grow!

Oh god. It's carnage in this thread. Mentioning a girl playing a computer game and everyone has an anger fit.
|
I think a female cup is discriminating against female players. It's like they were not capable of being as good as their male counterparts. I somehow still see the point in it though. Males have been overruling the gaming scene since forever and I think playing against other females might encourage them, however, I think they will never catch up if it stays like that."They play they little and cute games and when we come to it it gets to the real deal."
